BACKGROUND

The Institute or College provides the students only theoretical knowledge with some practical concepts.

Whether he is a diploma student or a graduate, he will not be a Practical Engineer unless he gains some industrial experience.

In this small presentation we shall try to analyze the said problem.

Page 4: How to become a practical engineer(1)

BACKGROUND

Even though the colleges provide practical knowledge through laboratories having expensive equipments, the outgoing engineer will not be a successful Practical Engineer.

Why?

This is a very important issue to be considered.

Let us compare theoretical and practical knowledge's.

COMPARISON BETWEEN TK VS PK

Theoretical knowledge

1. Knowledge of professional subjects is to be applied in real life. Unless it is understood thoroughly, it can not be used in industries or real life.

2. It takes lot of time to understand any systems from reading books

Practical knowledge

1. It is very easy to understand any working system in Industries and solve the problem.

2. It takes less time to understand any system through practicals/working models

COMPARISON BETWEEN TK VS PK

Theoretical knowledge

3.This type of knowledge gives complete information about any mechanism, system, method or technology under study only on paper or books with the help of text/diagram.

It is difficult to understand the working of a lathe gear box from books.

Practical knowledge

3. This type of knowledge gives specific information restricted to particular mechanism, system, method or technology in physical form.

For ex. Working of a gear box of a lathe can be understood if we see it actually in opened condition.

COMPARISON BETWEEN TK VS PK

Theoretical knowledge

4. Lot of time is required in analyzing the breakdowns and carry out the repair of the machine. This reduces the productivity.

5. Only theoretical knowledge may not show the full confidence of the engineer.

6. Urgent decisions can not be taken with only theoretical knowledge.

Practical knowledge

4. It reduces the time required for repairing the machine.Hence, helps in increasing the productivity.

5. Practical knowledge increases the confidence of an engineer.

6. It helps in taking fast decisions for any problems.

QUALITIES OF A PRACTICAL ENGINEER 1) He should have full confidence in his theoretical knowledge.

2) He should know how to use his knowledge.

3) He should be prepared to work with his own hands.

4) He must update his knowledge everyday.

5) He must be a sincere and hardworking engineer

QUALITIES OF A PRACTICAL ENGINEER 1) Full confidence in theoretical knowledge.

Most of the students study for getting through the examination only. They do not know the use of the subjects in practical life. If more importance is given by the teacher and convinced to the students, they will have more confidence in their knowledge and do not forget the subject.

QUALITIES OF A PRACTICAL ENGINEER 2) Use of theoretical knowledge

In Diploma curriculam the student learns about 30 subjects. It is very difficult to remember contents of all subjects. However he can remember zest or keypoints from the subjects.

What are those?

QUALITIES OF A PRACTICAL ENGINEERi. About Material

Types,compositions,properties,production of materials

ii. About Production processes: Actual process, machines used , merits and demerits

iii. Design of mechanisms , machines, mechanical systems

iv. Management principles and techniques

QUALITIES OF A PRACTICAL ENGINEER 3)Working with own hands:

Many engineers feel that they have achieved a big thing and they need not work . This is not at all correct. Once a while we should work with our own hands. This motivates our subordinates and increases respect from them towards us.

DO / DON'T

Do’s

1. Attend all the practicals of all the subjects

2. Understand thoroughly the aim, concept, necessity, procedure of the practical

3. Think about the applications of your practicals in real life/industries and store them in your mind. You may have to open and use them in your job.

Don’ts

1. Don’t miss or loose a single practical period

2. Don’t leave any doubt in your mind regarding the practical conducted

3. Don’t restrict , the knowledge gained through practical , only for exam.purpose.

DO / DON'T

Do’s

4. Observe, handle every instrument, mechanism you come across very carefully.Study its construction, application, merits and demerits.

5. Work with your own hands. This helps in increasing your confidence.

6. Visit industries as many as possible and learn the processes of their products.

Don’ts

4. Don’t take it casually in observing the machine/mechanisms.

5.Don’t hesitate to work with your own hands

6. Don’t miss any opportunity of visiting industries. It enhances your visualisation
