Ballet is a fluid yet very strict dance that involves

self-control, grace, strength, energy, flexibility and determination. Most importantly, you must make ballet look easy. However, there is so much discipline involved that sometimes the effort will show through in your moves. You must also put 110% in it every time. Some people might say it sounds too hard and just give up, but I know when I nail a hard move, in that instant it makes it all worthwhile. I think ballet is soooo hard but it is also soooo worth it and soooo fun.

TipsTips

1. Always point your toes. No flexed feet at all! 2. Always turn out your feet and legs. The movement comes from the hip socket not the

hips. If you try to turn out with your hips they will probably escalate, not drop, and look pretty ugly.

3.Never, under any circumstances, make it look hard!

Ten due (ton do) - stretched, held out, tight. A classic ballet movement where the leg is extended straight out from the supporting leg with the foot fully extended. It can be done back, side and front.

Tour jete (tour ja tay’) – to turn, to throw, to

toss, a sharp movement.

Releve (rel i’ vay)– to rise.

Chaines (sha’ nay) – a series of connected movements.

Plie (plea’ a) – to bend.

Sashay (soshay)-to move, to walk, or glide along freely.

The five ballet positions are like the main steps that are the roots of all the other ballet steps. They also help you learn a move more easily. Ballet is hard, but if you know the positions it will be easier.

• 1st position-Heels together, toes turned out as far as you can go, but keep all ten toes on the ground and arches lifted.

• 2nd position-Same as first but you have a foot length between your heels.

• 3rd position-Left foot in first, but right foot in the middle of your left foot just in front of your left arch. The right foot is usually turned out to 90 degrees.

• 4th position-Same as third but, bring your heel up to your left big toe. Then shoot out your right foot straight in front and have a foot length between your ig toe and your heel.

• 5th position-go to fourth then just bring your heel back and turn out.

Stand in 5th position, plie your legs up to 4th position, lunge then get ready to turn, sashay backwards while turning the bring the right leg up to 90 degrees then scissor the left one up behind it. You should end in the lunge you started with.

Stand in tendued 4th, turn up to relivay 1st: heels turned in, arches lifted, arms in 1st, tailbone down, shoulders down, chin up. Spot your head to the other side of the room. A chaines is meant to be quick and seamless. Each turn must be sharp yet relaxed. If you bring your heels closer together, it is easier to turn faster.
