How to eat healthyHi, honey. How did your primary care provider (PCP) appointment go?

Not good. The PCP told me I need to eat better and lose a few pounds. He gave me information on a healthy eating program called ‘Choose My Plate.’

Here are some healthier eating choices we can make as a family.

We need to make half our plate fruits and vegetables.

The plate is divided into four parts, and each part shows what and how much to eat at every meal.

The two smaller parts are for grains and protein.

Grains are starches like breads, pasta and potatoes. Protein is meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans and nuts.

Why don’t we make a shopping list for fruits, vegetables and other fresh foods?

The fruits and vegetables I like best are tomatoes, oranges, strawberries and carrots.

The best fruits are red and orange.

We will need dark green vegetables. Here’s some broccoli and green beans.

We can use this lean ground turkey when we make tacos.

These pork chops look good. I can grill them on the barbecue along with some sweet potatoes.

Can we buy my favorite chocolate cereal?

Look at the label. It is really high in sugar. I think we should choose something else.

My teacher told me breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

We should eat whole grains at breakfast. Whole wheat bread and oatmeal have more fiber and vitamins.

Each week we can make one change in our diet. It’s better to take small steps.

We made a good start today. We will change to fat-free or low-fat milk and cheese. And we can drink more water instead of soda and sugary drinks.

Here’s an idea – we should all try to be active for at least 30 minutes, five days a week.

The program says we also need to exercise more. I am going to go ride my bike.

We will both join you for a ride!
