• Do  not  leave  burning  candles  lit  when  away  • Do  not  leave  hot  stoves  running  when  meals  are  completed  • Do  not  leave  hot  irons  or  outdoor  grills  unattended  • Do  not  install  a  deadbolt  with  an  inside  key  only  –  this  may  prevent  you  and  your  family  from  escaping  in  cases  of  fire  or  other  emergencies  •  If  you  smoke,  ensure  the  element  is  completely    put  out  when  done  •  Install  a  range  anti-­‐tip  bracket  for  the  stove

• Do  develop  a  fire  escape  plan  and  make  sure  all  family  members  know  it.  Place  the  plan  in  a  central  location  in  the  home  •  Find  two  exits  out  or  every  room  •  Establish  a  meeting  place  outside  or  at  a  neighbors  house  if  safe  

• Never  go  back  into  a  burning  house/structure  • Keep  leaves  raked,  roof  and  gutters  clean  from  debris  as  this  is  dry  incendiary  material.  • Keep  wood  and  all  flammable  materials  such  as  solvents  or  liquids  in  metal  containers  at  least  30  feet  from  the  home.  • Buy  a  fire  blanket  and  portable  fire  extinguisher  and  keep  near/in  the  kitchen  since  this  is  where  most  fires  originate

•  If  in  wind  storm  –  prone  areas,  get  a  wind-­‐mitigation  inspection  • Ensure  gutters  flow  rainwater  properly  and  do  not  get  clogged  • Ensure  downspouts  route  water  away  from  the  home  • Ensure  your  basement  is  waterproof  if  you  live  in  a  flooding-­‐prone  area,  and  consider  building  flood  walls  • Ensure    you  have  enough  batteries,  flashlights,  canned  food  and  water  (11.5  gallons  per  person)  in  case  of  home  evacuation  • Ensure  you  have  an  emergency  kit  and  all-­‐weather  radio  • Check  with  your  home  insurance  for  flood  protection,  usually  it  is  an  add-­‐on  service

• Ensure  your  family  knows  the  home  evacuation  and  meet  up  plan  •  If  in  earthquake  prone  areas,  Keep  heavy  furniture  (such  as  book  cases)  away  from  beds,  couches  and  other  places  where  people  sit  or  sleep  in  case  of  earthquake  • Consider  installing  secured  cabinet  doors  • Check  if  gas  appliance  fittings  are  flexible    • Consider  getting  safety  light  glow  sticks  • Know  how  to  shut  off  gas  if  need  be

• Check  with  your  home  insurance  for  flood  protection,  usually  it  is  an  add-­‐on  service  • Ensure  your  family  knows  the  home  evacuation  and  meet  up  plan  •  If  in  earthquake  prone  areas,  Keep  heavy  furniture  (such  as  book  cases)  away  from  beds,  couches  and  other  places  where  people  sit  or  sleep  in  case  of  earthquake  • Consider  installing  secured  cabinet  doors  –  these  can  fly  open  during  an  earth  quake,  tornado  or  hurricane  and  can  easy  cause  injury  • Check  if  gas  appliance  fittings  are  flexible  –    this  helps  ensure  they  do  not  break  easily  and  cause  gas  leaks

• Doors •  Use  strong  doors  with  substantial  material.  Outside  doors  should  be  metal  or  solid  hardwood  at  least  1  ¾  inches  thick  •  Frames  must  be  just  as  strong  •  Consider  a  door  with  a  peephole  to  identify  people  

• Valuables •  Engrave  valuables  with  a  personal  ID  number  •  Call  your  local  fire  department,  they  will  help  you  with  this  process  

• Alarm  System •  Consider  installed  an  alarm  system  •  Social  psychology  indicates  having  security  signs  outside  the  home  is  a  deterrent

• Ensure  your  TV  is  secured  to  the  wall  via  a  bracket  or  is  using  a  fail  safe  safety  harness.  • Through  years  of  1990  and  2012,  children  under  18  numbered  17,000  injuries  by  a  calling  TV  set,  one  every  30  minutes  •  Injuries  increase  125%  between  these  years  • Between  2000  and  2011,  215  children  died  from  injuries  caused  by  falling  TVs.    • Solution?  Anchor  furniture  and  TVs  to  the  walls,  keep  cords  out  of  sight  and  reach  from  little  prying  hands
