The Hells Canyon Gem Club held their meeting at Beachview Park in Clarkston for their summer picnic. There was no official business meeting therefore there were no minutes taken. About 30 people attended, the food was great, and a good time was had by all. Bruce brought the rock trailer down and $265 worth of rocks were sold. Our July meeting will be held as usual at the Grange Hall on July 10. July11 is the WSMC field trip to our crystal/garnet claim. The bathrooms are now in place and some cleanup has been done in the camping area. See you in July. ML Northrup

FIELD TRIP SIGN-UPS

Contact Dan Cease for: the Jade Field Trip in August and the Red Top field trip in September. He is working closelywith the Ellensburg club to get a joint field trip with them to go onto private land to dig petrified wood. This area contains nice rounds. It is west of Vantage Museum. The field trips to our garnet claim are full. Dan is working with the different groups to combine rides and keep the vehicle count down. Contact Dan for questions.

WSMC July 10 field trip--- claim pre-trip

Bruce and kids, Mary Lou and Jerry, Dan and Jerry Anderson andfriend trekked up a dusty graveled road, 45 miles encountering 10 loaded logging trucks and misc. pickups. It wasn't scary but surewas dusty, at times one could not see the road until the dust settled.

The work party installed an out house at the garnet dig and at thecrystal dig. We also put up a sign leading to the garnet dig. Spending three days was nice as we got accustomed to the heat.

Wild life was abundantagain, ground squirrels, smallprairie dogs, deer, and a littleblack bear that wanted tocheck me out when I wascooking breakfast onemorning. We had a good time sitting aroundthe camp stove, feeding our facesand sharing stories of how old wewere, things we could not eat andall the soreness from the littledigging. Garnets and crystals werefound and we all are getting excitedabout the WSMC field trip.

Because of the concern ofoncoming logging trucks, we need to carpool as much as we can to keep the vehicles to a minimum. We will be having at least four groups spaced apart enough to allow us to use the turnouts and keep the dust reduced. I am keeping a head count of people that want to eat breakfast at the Clarkia café. So far I have 4 at the café for7 am. Also, I am asking anyone to bring a CB that is working so that we might split up into smallergroups.

I will bring some tables, cook stoves, awnings, other misc stuff for the red outhouse. We probably will be weed wacking some of the trails leading into the digs. We also will want to instruct where to dig where the old diggings were covered up. There will be a lot of garnets in those tailings, the same goes for the crystals. I will help with where to dig for crystals. We will terrace landscape the slope to unearth more veins. Dan Cease

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++WSMC Report. May 9th Ellensburg, Washington

Much concern was made over how pseudo rock hounds are befriendingus by leaving holes not filled in, trees uprooted and in some instancescommercial digging was discovered in various places in WashingtonState. These occurrences have taken place on state and federal lands.WSMC discovered that Red Top is being assessed by the forest serviceon this beautiful designated rock hound recreational area.

Since the WSMC has actively worked with the USFS 40 years ago we aregoing to make an aggressive effort to work with the USFS in advance ofany changes to regulations. Normally we find out about actions after aplan by the USFS has occurred and then only are required to respond tosuch action. This time we are going to be part of the early process andwork closely with the USFS Wenatchee District Office to help.

Similar action has been taken by those in Montana at the Crystal ParkRock Hound Recreation Area. At this time we do not know how they arecommunicating or what they are thinking other than what I describedabove.

Another part of the meeting was discussion on SB1571 and how to informrepresentatives in Olympia know what rock hounding is about. Bob Pattiesent out a questionnaire for everyone to fill out and send responses tohim. He is making it easy. These will be part of the package that will be in a presentation to them. It does not matter if one lives out of the state of Washington, it all counts towards passage of that bill. Reminds me of the skirmish we had with environmentalists back in the early seventies when they wanted to turn central Cascades into a wilderness park.

After the meeting we traveled to the upper back part of First Creek looking for agate and crystals. We found some material, not sure how good it is until its cut. We got geodes and seam agate, a few pieces of jasper too. The going in was rough and many of us carpooled. One of the 4x4 pickups got stuck and besides chain sawing logs from across the logging road, we had to fill in two berms with logs and clay dirt. It was fun but an

exhausting day not to mention the long travel home. Dan Cease

Idaho Recliner

IF ONLY I HAD REALIZED WHAT THEY WERE FOR!I feel like an idiot; I’ve been using mine wrong for all theseyears! If I had figured out how to use them correctly, I might havequalified to be a city worker.

P.S. Home Depot is having a sale on Idaho Recliners...

As time goes on, I will keep everyone informed about aspects of ourshow.Needs; we need to have a couple of work parties, wiring of lights/brackets, repair signs, new liners, and put new epoxy on display case fronts/repair some broken glass. The month of June and July are good months to do this.Another need is for tumbled really small gem stones for the kids gem hunts and

larger ones for the rock search and rock toss.

If you're not familiar with the work of Boswell D. Rabbitsmith famous erudite scientist who once said: "Iwoke up one morning, and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact duplicates."

His mind sees things differently than most of us do, to our amazement and amusement. Here are some ofhis gems: (He also makes his living as a comedian by the name of Steve Wright....)

1 - I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.2 - Borrow money from pessimists -- they don't expect it back.3 - Half the people you know are below average.4 - 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.5 - 82.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.6 - A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.7 - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.8 - If you want the rainbow, you got to put up with the rain.9 - All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand.10 - The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.11 - I almost had a psychic girlfriend, but she left me before we met.12 - OK, so what's the speed of dark?13 - How can you tell when you're out of invisible ink?14 - If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.15 - Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.16 - When everything seems to be coming your way, maybe you're in the wrong lane.17 - Ambition is a poor excuse for not being smart enough to be lazy.18 - Hard work pays off in the future, laziness pays off now.19 - I intend to live forever... so far, so good.20 - If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?21 - Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.22 - What happens if you get scared half to death...twice?23 - My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."24 - Why do psychics have to ask you for your name?25 - If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.26 - A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.27 - Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.28 - The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread.29 - To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.30 - The sooner you fall behind, the more time you'll have to catch up.32 - Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don't have film.33 - If your car could travel at the speed of light, would your headlights work?
