Who we are! 3 G Henderson March 2016

We are here to get employees and their families in to the Air and give them the unparalleled experience of freedom and flight in the Air. As a high profile Flying Company it is important that we represent ourselves in this arena too, and it is therefore fitting that we should have a Flying Club; run privately but operating alongside its corporate parent.

We are open and welcoming to new members, with the Club made up from Company Employees, retirees and their families. We based across Warton unit with members from both Samlesbury and Warton sites alike, but with some members from other sites joining in.

We are one of the busiest clubs flying out of Blackpool Airport, at Squires Gate, historically founded on an old RAF base no less. We were founded 65 years ago using vouchers to fly with the Blackpool operators of the time

We own two Aircraft; two Piper Warriors, known as PA-28s.

With over 90 members, our pilots range from Company Directors, Test Pilots, Engineers, Aircraft Fitters, Electricians, Clerical Workers, and Apprentices!

We are a fully Licensed Training organisation; many of our pilots have gone on to illustrious commercial flying careers or become in house instructors for our new students. Some have even ended up flying for the company and beyond. We are a non-profit organisation existing to provide the greatest safe and value flying we can, whilst aiming to keep the very highest level of maintained Aircraft. We are run by a committee elected from our members with specialist talents in Airworthiness, Training, Flight Testing and Aircraft maintenance.

What can we do for YOU! We can take you from never flying before all the way through to a Qualified Pilot, known as a PPL (Private Pilot’s Licence)

Or do you fancy a Trial Lesson first? Or a Taster Session? This could give you a preview, or make a unique, fantastic gift or anniversary present!

Once we have got you qualified, we can teach you much more, to fly at Night, on Instruments or build your flying skills and experience including Club 'Fly Out trips' - possibly progressing to a Commercial Licence

You still have Questions? - FAQ Of course you have! Flying is a fun but serious business, so here’s a bit of information. Don’t worry too much, your instructor will help you through this.

Obtaining A PPL with BAe Warton Flying Club. (Information dated August 2015).

1. Introduction The club provides flying training for the grant of a EASA Part-FCL PPL two Piper PA- 28 ‘Warriors’. These are also available for hire by qualified PPL pilots. The club operates using the facilities of Hangar 2E which is leased to us by Autarky Air Services Limited.

Alternatively Training for the EASA Light Aeroplane Pilots Licence is offered.

A prospective PPL pilot may have a number of questions…. here we’ve tried to answer those most commonly asked, to provide an indication of what to expect in PPL training.

The duration and cost of an individual’s PPL course is dependent upon many factors, including aptitude, enthusiasm, finances and the weather. It is a significant undertaking both in terms of time (flight training and study) and financially, but is also rewarding and achievable. These factors should be considered carefully by any potential PPL student before embarking on a course.

If you are interested in training for a Private Pilot’s Licence once you have read this why not contact an Instructor to arrange a Trial Lesson…? Or Taster Session?

The regulatory bodies are:-

EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) and CAA (Civil Aviation Authority)

7 G Henderson March 2016 2. Costs

The PPL is fun and rewarding, and along with demanding a significant about of time and effort also requires the pilot to take a sizeable financial step. Although flying in the BAe (Warton) Flying Club is “pay as you go” and learning is at your own rate (to fit in with the pressures of life) careful thought is required to financing the course. The table below gives you an indication only (August 2015) of the costs associated with the PPL and a comparison with flying schools in the North West of England.

8 G Henderson March 2016 There is a clear saving to be had flying with BAE (Warton) flying club AND

utilising the same facilities as the commercial operations, with no drop in standards or capabilities.

External Commercial packages are available with other flying schools, but these are only budgeted for the minimum EASA requirement of 45 Flying hours. A more realistic expectation is to be qualifying having conducted 55-60 Flying Hours. This is an additional cost to any Package and should be kept in mind.

Please contact us for details on the EASA LAPL (a slimmed down PPL with less stringent medical requirements) More information then please visit www.baeflyingclub.co.uk and use the contact us option.

The cost of everything is paramount to everyone but we can assure your PPL will be worth every penny!!

The Good news it does not all have to be paid up front and could be seen as a “pay as you go” situation.

3. Medical requirements

To hold a PPL the pilot is required to have a valid medial certificate. This must be issued and the pilot examined by a CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) AME (Aeromedical Examiner).

The assessment will look at general health as well as eyesight, These are a series of questions about medical history and any previous illness. You will be asked about them by your AME, and if there is any major illness in your past, it is important to bring reports about it from your family doctor or treating Specialist.

Appendicitis or a broken arm are not regarded as major illnesses.

This Medical Certificate is required before a student pilot is sent “solo”.

This must be renewed on a periodic basis, with the period of validity reducing with the age of the holder.

(Validity is 60 months if under 40; 24 months for ages 30-49; & 12 months if over 50).

For the NPPL a G.P. medical examination & affirmation of fitness is required.

Page 9: How to get a PPL. Want to know more!? · 2016. 8. 3. · Obtaining A PPL with BAe Warton Flying Club. (Information dated August 2015). 1. Introduction The club provides flying training

9 G Henderson March 2016 4. How much Flying training is involved in gaining a PPL?

The legal minimum number of Hours is 45 hours flight time. This must comprise at least 25 hours dual instruction and at least 10 hours of supervised solo flight time. This solo flight time must include at least 5 hours of solo cross-country flying. The 45 hours quoted above represents a minimum requirement, and in practice it would be more sensible to ‘budget’ for 55-60 flying hours. Pilot ability/ aptitude does of course vary, and the weather does play a major part. However if you can fly regularly (e.g. at least once a week) you will progress more quickly.

A similar training syllabus is used for the NPPL. However the NPPL has some limitations as you cannot subsequently hold a Night or IMC Rating and you cannot fly Pilot in Command outside UK airspace.

5. Ground Exams for EASA PPL (EASA Part-FCL) (Valid 01/09/13 onwards)

The aim of this information is to give the reader the latest information with regards to the ground (theoretical knowledge) examinations. Again this seems onerous…. it isn’t… …with regular time put aside, the relevant textbooks and complimented with regular practical flying it all comes together!

The exams There are now 9 ground exams; all multiple choice. These are:-

• Air Law • Operational Procedures • Meteorology • Navigation • Flight Performance and Planning • Principles of Flight • Human Performance • Communications • Aircraft General

There is also a requirement for a minimum amount of study to be completed, 100 hours. Pass mark remains at 75%.

Page 10: How to get a PPL. Want to know more!? · 2016. 8. 3. · Obtaining A PPL with BAe Warton Flying Club. (Information dated August 2015). 1. Introduction The club provides flying training

10 G Henderson S March 2016 Sitting exams

The EASA rules mean that exams MUST now be sat in a maximum of 6 sittings. A sitting is a 10 day period starting on the day that an exam is taken).

It is therefore necessary for multi exams to be taken with each 10 day sitting. If an exam is failed you cannot retake it within the same sitting. If an exam is failed it can be retaken twice more locally and then on one further occasion at the CAA Gatwick. If any exam is failed more than 4 times then all exam passes are forfeited and all ground exams have to be retaken again.

If all exams and any re-sits are not passed within 6 sittings then all PPL exam passes are forfeited and must be taken again. Sitting of exams may now require consideration. BAE (Warton) Flying Club are recommending the following sittings:-

Sitting 1 • Air Law • Operational Procedures

Sitting 2 • Meteorology • Resits from sitting 1

Sitting 3 • Navigation • Flight Performance and Planning • Any resits from sitting 2

Sitting 4 • Aircraft General • Principles of Flight • Any resits from sitting 3

Sitting 5 • Human Performance and Limitations • Communications • Any resits from sitting 4

Sitting 6 • Any resits

Page 11: How to get a PPL. Want to know more!? · 2016. 8. 3. · Obtaining A PPL with BAe Warton Flying Club. (Information dated August 2015). 1. Introduction The club provides flying training

11 G Henderson March 2016 Validity period

A period of 18 months from the date of the first exam is allowed to complete all exams. If this process is not completed within the time frame than all PPL passes are forfeited and all must be taken again. Passes in the theoretical exams will be accepted for the grant of the PPL during 2 months from the date of successfully completing all the examinations (you must get your PPL within 2 years).

Books and studying

The current manuals are available from Pooleys Aviation, Transair Ltd and PilotShop et cetera and cover all the syllabus as do the current Questions and Answers book. New books should be labelled to cover the new E AS A syllabus.

“Ground Schools” for the exams are available and these are due to start soon. Please talk to your instructor about the ground schools for these subjects.

6. Skills tests

At the end of the PPL course, the Student pilot must pass a Skills Test to qualify for the issue of a PPL. This test consists of both a General Handling section and a Navigation section. Your Instructor won’t put you forward until you are BOTH ready!!

7. K ee pi ng yo ur L ic en ce “ cu r re n t”.

Once you have your PPL licence you can really start to enjoy the privileges of your licence and hire a plane for a day or longer from trips in the UK. To keep your licence valid, you will need to have completed a minimum of 12 hours flying within a 2-year period, with at least 12 hours being flown in the last 12 months of that period. You will also require an hours flying with an instructor every 2 years. You will need to keep your medical current, how often you are examined depends on your age. You may also want to extend your licence to fly at night or in IMC (Instrument Metrological Conditions) again, which can be done with BAe (Warton) Flying Club.

8. Further Ratings

The holder of PPL is not allowed to fly at night unless he/she has a Night Rating. The club can provide the training for a night rating to suitably qualified pilots.

Additionally, the club can provide training for the UK-use only IMC (a.k.a. IR(R) – Instrument Rating [Restricted])This allows for the flight in conditions of reduced in flight visibility, but is not an Instrument Rating, and should effectively be regarded as an additional ‘safety measure’.

What can I do with a PPL? Once you have your licence there are big opportunities ahead. There is now a separate document from BAE (Warton) Flying Club; entitled “What Next? – Things to do with your Private Pilot’s Licence” this can be obtained via the club email.

As a paid up member of BAE (Warton) Flying Club and a qualified pilot, you can go flying and enjoy the freedoms of the sky with all the responsibilities that come with it.

You can take friends and family flying, visit new places and see the world from an entirely new perspective. Have you seen your house from 2000 feet or have seen

the Lake District from 4000 feet on a beautiful sunny day!!??

You can get involved and get flying with other Pilots and share the costs!!

In addition the Club runs regular “Fly Outs” – These are fabulous opportunities to meet other like- minded pilots, glean from our more experienced folk, visit new Airfields including Airshows and special aviation based events.

So convinced yet?

What are you waiting for?
