Ask AN ExpErt In the midst of today’s increasingly complex financial markets, the services of a skilled investment professional are more valuable than ever before. Experienced financial

advisors have the ability to assist with a wide range of financial issues, from everyday money management to crafting sophisticated investment strategies. Of utmost importance is working with an advisor who takes the time to learn about you and your goals. A financial planning professional can assist their clients with a broad array of situations from simple budgeting, to debt counseling, to building and protecting your retirement nest egg.

5 KEYS TO CONSIDER WHEN INVESTING FOR RETIREMENT

As people live longer and healthier lives, investing for retire-ment income has become more important than ever. Whether retirement is closer than you like to admit or off on the distant horizon here are some key points you should consider.

• Have a plan! The single biggest mistake is having no strat-egy at all when it comes to your retirement. I have found that many people fail to develop a plan because they are intimidated by the complexities of retirement accounts and investments. Creating a strategy can be simple with the help of the right financial advisor and may increase your potential for success, both before and after retirement.

• Once you have put a retirement plan into place take the time to review and fine-tune it regularly. Even the most

basic retirement plan will need adjustments made to it over time. Both market conditions and your life circumstances are constantly changing so a “set it and forget it” approach isn’t recommended. This is especially important if you are within 3-5 years from retirement. The last thing you can afford is to have your retirement portfolio take a dive due to a sharp fall in stock prices and a sustained bear market at the same time you’re ready to stop working. Consider adjusting your asset allocation in advance of retirement so you protect the nest egg you’ve worked so hard to build.

• Avoid chasing “hot” investments as this often leads to disappointment and losses. Don’t pay too much attention to financial “news” outlets, recognizing that their job is to cre-ate activity and sell advertising-not to give you sound advice on your specific situation is key. Create an asset allocation strategy that is properly diversified to reflect your goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon; then make adjustments based

on changes in your personal situation, not due to market fluctuations.

• Focus on reducing debt prior to retirement. If too much debt is bad when you’re working and making money, it can be overwhelming when you’re living in retirement. Becoming debt free, or as close as possible, will significantly enhance your retirement. Not to mention the good money manage-ment habits you create while paying down that debt and living within your means will come in very handy when you are living on your retirement income.

• Retirement isn’t only about money: Above all, an enjoy-able retirement requires good health, so maintain a healthy lifestyle and take care of you. Focus on doing the things you enjoy and remain both physically and socially active.

SizingEach pellet stove produces a specific amount of heat, measured

in British Thermal Units, or BTUs. Choosing a unit that produces too much heat for your home is a waste of money, and can make your home uncomfortably warm. A unit that's too small may not provide enough heat on colder days. As a rule of thumb, a stove rated at 60,000 BTUs can heat a 2,000 square foot home, while one offering 42,000 BTUs can heat a home measuring 1,300 square feet.

MaintenanceRemoving ash represents the biggest maintenance requirement associated with a pellet stove. The type of stove you choose can significantly affect ash accumulation and maintenance. According to the EPA, top-fed stoves often fill with ash and require a great deal of cleanup. Bottom-fed stoves, where pellets enter from the

base of the stove, push ash out into an ash pan for easier cleanup.

TypePellet stoves come in two basic models, including freestanding units and fireplace inserts. If you have an existing fireplace, a pellet stove insert can tie directly into your existing chimney, but will prevent you from using the fireplace to burn wood. Freestanding models require a separate exhaust vent, but offer greater flexibility as to where you can place them in the home.

Power SupplyMost pellet stoves come with an auto-start ignition for easy operation. If the power goes out, you won't be able to use your stove. If you plan to use your pellet stove as your primary source of heat, or you live in an area with frequent outages, choose a pellet stove equipped with a battery backup system.

AppearanceWhile comparing features of different pellet stoves, don't forget to consider how the unit will look in your home. These stoves can blend in with the decor or serve as a focal point within a room. Find a model that comes in a color and style that works with your home design. If you like the cozy feeling of watching a fire burn, look for stoves with glass windows that allow you to watch the pellets smolder.

Pellet stoves burn small, compressed pellets of wood to heat the home. These clean-burning stoves offer a

much higher level of energy efficiency than traditional wood stoves and

fireplaces, and produce virtually no smoke. When choosing a pellet stove

for home heating, consider factors such as maintenance, design and size to find

the model that best suits your needs.

How - to choose a

college that’s right for you The second function of community colleges is to prepare students for the job market by

offering entry-level career training, as well as courses for adult students who want to upgrade their skills for workforce re-entry or advancement. Here are some reasons you might attend West Shore Community College:

1. YOU’RE TIGHTON FUNDS Community colleges cost significantly less than state or private colleges and universities. This means that they can be a cost-effective way to complete the first years of college.

2. YOU’RE NOT SUREABOUT COLLEGE Maybe you’d like to begin by aiming for a two-year associate’s degree and assess as you go whether you want to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

3. YOU AREN’T SUREWHAT KIND OFPROGRAM TO PURSUE Many people enter college without a clear idea of what they want to focus on. At a community college, you can explore different subject areas before committing to a program, without having to be so

concerned about finances. Many community colleges offer intensive guidance counseling that can help you assess your abilities, and interests.

4. YOU WANT TO BUILDYOUR SKILLS BEFORETRANSFERRING Whereas many four-year colleges and universities have selection criteria for attendance, such as a minimum required GPA, community colleges are open to everyone. If you want to pursue college-level coursework but aren’t academically ready, community colleges offer classes and one-one-one tutoring to help you strengthen your basic skills.

5. YOU’D LIKE A CAREER-ORIENTED DEGREE Programs like these are often not available at four-year institutions. If you’re thinking of seeking employment after finishing up at a community college, there are several routes you can take. You can earn an associate degree – an Associate of Arts or Science (A.A. or A.S.) or an Associate of Applied Arts and Sciences (A.A.A.S.). These degrees take about two years to complete. However, if you want to take courses in a specialized area of study but don’t want to spend the time necessary to earn an associate’s degree, many community colleges have certificate options that provide intensive training in a specialized field like computer network services, management, office information systems, or early childhood education.

Community colleges weredeveloped, and still exist,

for two major purposes. Thefirst is to serve as a bridge

from high school to collegeby providing courses for

transfer toward a Bachelorof Arts or Bachelor of Science

degree. Four out of 10college-bound high-school

graduates start their collegeeducation this way.

fireplace insert The installation of a fireplace insert can turn an occasional source of warmth into a convenient and easy-to-use supplemental zone heater that can help control high home heating bills while protecting winter air quality.

FIREPLACE INSERT BASICS Fireplace inserts are designed to enhance the operation and appearance of an existing wood-burning fireplace, whether masonry or factory-built. Categorized

primarily by the fuel burned for operation (natural gas, propane, EPA-certified wood, pellet and coal), a fireplace insert is installed into an existing wood-burning fireplace. Fireplace inserts are made from cast iron or steel

and have self-cleaning glass doors that allow the dancing flames of the fire to be viewed while the insulated doors remain closed, making the fire more efficient. Many manufacturers also augment the operation of fireplace inserts by offering state-of-the-art features such as fans and thermostatic controls. (depending on the fuel).

ENHANCED EFFICIENCY Almost all North Americans with older wood-burning fireplaces can benefit from the installation of a fireplace insert. Generally, older fireplaces have efficiency ratings of just five to ten percent. This low efficiency is due to the open combustion design that allows an abundance of heated room air to be drawn into the fire, causing the

fire to burn too fast and wasting energy. In contrast, a fireplace insert is an insulated, closed-door system that slows the fire down and increases the temperature of the fire to facilitate more complete combustion. This closed combustion system can assist in generating efficiencies of above 65 percent in many cases which can translate into more heat output. And, when it comes to burning wood, an EPA-certified wood-burning fireplace insert can also reduce emissions from wood burning to almost zero.

VARIETY OFFUEL OPTIONS Determining which fuel type to select when purchasing a fireplace insert depends on the cost and availability of the fuel, the desired efficiency and heat output, as well as the level of maintenance requirements and the desired appearance of the fire by the user. While most fireplace inserts manufactured today are extremely efficient, the choice is often dictated by a person’s individual needs.

SELECTING AFIREPLACE INSERT Much like any other appliance, it is important to spend the time to choose a fireplace insert that fits your needs and your lifestyle, whether more formal or relaxed. Before making a final decision, visit a specialty retailer for experienced advice. A specialty retailer is a trained fireplace insert specialist. He or she can arrange for the safe and reliable installation of a fireplace insert by a certified professional installer. These experts are also the best source of information about how to correctly operate a fireplace insert, and can suggest a proper maintenance program.

For people interested in enhancing the look and

feel of an existing wood-burning fireplace, the

hearth industry has great news. It’s now easier than

ever before to increase the efficiency of a fireplace by

adding a fireplace insert.

How - toHospice care isn’t only for the dying. Hospice puts the family and patient at the center of care planning by working closely with physicians and

caregivers to provide comprehensive, compassionate care for individuals nearing the end of life.

Hospice care can be provided in your home, assisted living centers, nursing homes, hospitals and residential facilities. Hospice care specializes in making the patient feel as comfortable as possible. More and more, patients to receive in their own homes,

where they are most comfortable, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Choose one that helps you and your family feel at ease.

You should be prepared to ask and answer some extremely difficult questions. Remember, death is a tough subject to discuss and clear, caring communication is absolutely essential. A quality hospice program will give you all the time and personal attention you need to ease your mind.

Since some physicians may hesitate to broach the subject of hospice care,

you may need to bring it up yourself. Ask whether hospice care would be appropriate and which services might be most helpful to ease the end-of-life process. You can also approach a hospice provider directly to ask about their services. They will work with physicians to help determine if a patient is eligible for hospice care.

By focusing on the emotional, spiritual and physical needs of both the patient and family, hospice care helps make the end-of-life experience meaningful for all, allowing people to die with peace and dignity.

Opting for hospice care can be one of the most compassionate decisions you

will ever make.

How - tobuy cabinets

People generally buycabinets for two reasons:

storage and beauty. Anyonewho’s watched the many

the right cabinetry candramatically enhance a

home. The right cabinets canalso help you sell your home

faster and for more money.

Let’s assume you want new cabinets simply for the sake of

more storage and a handsome kitchen or bathroom. •Thinkabout what you really need and want. While you don’t need an advanced degree in mathematics to estimate your cabinet needs, you’ll want to think about some basics: Will there be room to

comfortably store all of the utensils you want to place out of sight? Or would you be better off hanging your cookware from an overhead rack? Will the handle to the frying pan fit into the space you want for it, and will all of your linens fit comfortably in their storage space? •Collectyourfavoriteadsandphoto-spreads from magazines. They’llhelpyourcabinetvendorquickly understand what you want. •Visitseveralcabinetvendorsas well as businesses specifically geared to cabinetry, kitchens or bathrooms. By browsing several stores you’ll get a much better idea of the varieties of materials and styles from which you can choose. You’ll also be able to speak to people on the floor and determine which of them are the most interested and helpful. •Priceswillvarywidely.Don’tmake price your bottom line. How - to choose a

chiropractic physicianWHAT IS A CHIROPRACTICPHYSICIAN (DC)? Chiropractic Physicians (DC) are licensed health care professionals concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of neuromusculoskeletal conditions, spinal related health problems and the effects of these conditions on the nervous system and a person’s overall general health. Chiropractic care is a natural and conservative method of treating and respecting the human body’s ability to heal itself.

QUESTIONS TO ASK You may wish to start your search by asking friends, co-workers and relatives for recommendations. Next, set up an appointment with the doctor to make sure he or she is someone you are comfortable talking with. There are many questions you may wish to ask at this appointment: •Whichcollegedidhe/sheattend? This is important as these schools must meet certain standards with specific courses. Chiropractic colleges focus on chiropractic principles, diagnosis, orthopedics, physiologic therapeutics andnutrition.Threeareas–manipulative/adjustivetechniques/spinalanalysis,physical clinical laboratory diagnosis, and diagnostic imaging – account for more than half of the education in clinical sciences. During their internship chiropractic physicians complete two years of hands-on clinical experience focusingonspinalmanipulation/adjustment as the primary treatment procedure. •Doesthedoctorregularlyattendcontinuingeducationseminars? •Whatarethechiropracticphysician’sfeelings about where chiropractic care fits in with other health professions, and whatkindofexperiencehe/shehaswithpatients who have similar problems as you.

•Discussthefinances.Professionalchiropractic offices help you understand the financial costs by evaluating your insurance coverage and out-of-pocket expenses. Any doctor whose fees are substantially higher or lower than other chiropractic physicians should raise a warning flag. •Askabouttheirtreatments.Professional chiropractic physicians use adjustment/manipulativetreatment,therapeutic rehabilitation and nutritional advice.

YOUR CHIROPRACTICSPINAL EVALUATION Before beginning your evaluation, you should fill out health care forms focusing on your problem and past history. Then you should have a private interview with the doctor to discuss your problem in detail. This should be followed by an examination that includes vital signs, a range of orthopedic and neurological tests, and an analysis of your musculoskeletal system. After the history and examination are complete, you should receive a complete report of findings. The doctor should be able to explain your problem to you in clear and understandable terms, discuss options for treatment and outline a customized treatment plan. This includes specific therapeutic goals and an estimate of the frequency and number of visits your condition will require before you can expect to feel better.

THE TREATMENT Most patients who seek chiropractic care have spinal related subluxations, stiff or tight muscles along the spine and muscles that are in spasm with pain. During the examination, the doctor should have determined which areas of your spine aren’t functioning properly. The chiropractic physician may choose to use ice, heat, massage, trigger point therapy and traction.

Because...I know

it is right.

Why I Am A Doctor ofCHIROPRACTIC

Because I honor the inborn potential of everyone to be truly healthy.

Because I desire to help the newborn, the aged, and those without hope.

Because I choose to care for the patient with the disease, not the disease.

Because I wish to assist rather than intrude, to free rather than to control.

Because I seek to correct the cause, not its effect.

Because I know doctors do not heal, only the body can heal itself.

Because I have been called to serve others.

Because I want to make a difference.

If you work long hours and hate the thought of grinding through a wet,

overgrown lawn every weekend, when you should be having fun, you might consider hiring a lawn care service to

take care of the chores for you.

How - tochoose a lawn service

We all enjoy a beautiful lawn, but few of us are nuts about the blood, sweat and tears needed to make your lawn look beautiful. Fortunately, especially if you have – as many people do these days – well over a 40-hour work week, help can be inexpensive. What’s your time worth, anyway?

Like everything else, mowing jobs can be both good and bad. A professional Lawn Care Specialist will first consult with you about the desired height of your grass. The standard recommendations, of course, are that blades of grass be three inches high, and that no more than one third be trimmed when mowed. But that’s up to you. The fact is that many beautiful lawns are much shorter than three inches.

Another thing you’ll notice about skilled lawn care professionals is that they often mow on the diagonal and will occasionally change their patterns. That’s because grass will be more resilient, uniform and likely to stand up if it isn’t mowed exactly the same way time after time.

Some prefer to bag their clippings, but in doing that, you take the added nutrients in your lawn away. Instead of bagging, mulching is recommended to minimize the amount of clippings left

on your lawn, and put those important nutrients back into your lawn. It is also recommended that you dethatch your lawn in the spring to remove the excess mulch. Dethatching in the spring rejuvenates your lawn from the weight of the snow over the winter and promotes healthier growth.

Good lawn care specialists will know about how often they need to hit your lawn, and you can put the whole operation on auto-pilot while you sip ice tea poolside. However, make sure you have a clear understanding of how much money you’re willing to spend over the course of a season. Every five days might be good in May. Come August, it might be every two weeks. Set a spending limit and you won’t have to worry about a surprise in the mail.

Frankly, good lawn care specialists are evident around town. When you see the local lawn company at work, see how good the work looks. Look at the equipment, too. One of the ironclad rules of good mowing is to keep mower blades sharp. If the equipment is filthy or dented and scratched, you might wonder what shape the blades are in. Blade damage is inevitable, but it’s no excuse for a shoddy mowing job.

It can never be said too much: Make sure your lawn care service is licensed and insured. And whatever you do, don’t allow just anyone to mow your lawn. Sure, mowing looks easy. But what happens when your uninsured, careless, so-called professional puts a rock through that brand new picture window while mowing your lawn?

How - toselecting paint

Find out all you have ever wanted to know about

selecting paint.

Painting is a quick and cheap way to give an old room a breath of fresh air or to make your house more saleable if you are putting it on the market.

Which paint should you choose? Paint comes in a variety of sheens as well as in either oil or latex. Latex paint is the most commonly and preferred paint type

to use because of its ease of clean up and long lasting durability. However, oil based paint is great for priming real wood

moldings and trim as it tends to seal stains and knots from the wood better than a latex paint wood. The glossier the paint, the easier it is to clean up. High gloss is also great for trim and will give the trim a nice finished look. Semi-gloss and satins would also be a good choice for kitchens and baths as well as trim providing ease of washability and less shine than the gloss. If you have walls with lots of imperfections, select a flat or matte paint. Eggshell hides imperfections like a flat does but is easier to wash, so more durable and smoother to the touch.

What colorsshould i choose? Painting with cool colors such as blues, greens and purples makes small rooms appear larger and more airy while colors such as reds, yellows and oranges will give a room a more vibrant appearance. You can vary the warmth even with

a red or yellow by choosing muted shades of those colors such as pink or peach. Shades are either pure or vibrant, muted or shaded. Your local paint store has color charts with suggestions on color combinations and color samples. The knowledgeable sales people can also help you choose which kind of paint to use, depending on the location of the room and how it will be used.

choosing the right paint for your home’s exterior Are you getting ready to paint the exterior of your home? Paint can be used on wood siding and also on vinyl siding. If the vinyl siding on your home is faded, you can paint over it. Your paint store will help you choose which paints to use for either wood or vinyl, including base coats and final coats. When selecting the best exterior house paint or stain for your home, keep in mind the following attributes:• Durabilityandoverall performance• Resistancetomoldandmildew• Resistancetoultravioletradiation• Easeofapplication• Environmentallyfriendly• SelectingExteriorPaintColors In addition to its protective value, a new coat of paint or stain can be aesthetically transforming–and choosing a paint color is always a challenge. Generally, neutral colors work well on all homes. If you like bright or bold colors, they can be incorporated in trim work, like shutters, doors and window trim. This is a good way to put your individual spin on your home.

How - to find a good tow truck service Maybe you have run out of gas, or slid into a ditch, perhaps you have been involved in a slight fender bender; whatever the reason, you

are suddenly in need of an auto towing company. How do you choose whom you will call? What questions should you ask before you agree to use their services? The following tips will help you ask the right questions to get the answers that you will need to make an educated and

informed decision. It is important to decide what auto towing company you want to use before you are in a situation where you will be needing one. You will want to know what they charge per tow, how far they will tow your vehicle and if they will do any necessary paperwork for your

insurance company or if you need to do that. It is also important to find out if you need to pay them upfront when they tow, or if you only pay after the insurance company. Ask friends and family what auto towing company they prefer to use. If a relative or friend has used a company that they are not happy with, they will tell you. Friends and family also are very quick to let you know if they are happy with the service that they have received from a particular company. You will need to call the towing companies that have been recommended by your auto insurance agent as well as any that have been recommended by your friends and family. A good place to start your search is by calling your auto insurance agent, they will be able to tell you the companies that they prefer to work with. The advantage to this information is that, generally, the procedure to being reimbursed is much simpler when you use a company that is preferred by your insurance agent. Consider these tips when looking for a

towing service: •GetaTowTruckSmartphoneApp:Ifyouown a smartphone, it’s a good idea to download a tow truck smartphone app. Tow Truck Finder is a popular app. It allows you to find a nearby tow truck no matter where you live. •SearchTowing.com:Ifyou’restrandedathome, check Towing.com, this website allows you to search for tow truck services by ZIP code. It provides towing company names, phone numbers and hours of operation. •CallYourMechanic:Ifyourcarwon’tstartand you’re in town, call a mechanic. Most mechanics work closely with tow truck services and can provide a recommendation. Have your mechanic’s phone number programmed into your phone. •ShopAround:Beforeyousettleonatow truck service, compare prices. Don’t let emotions get the best of you during a stressful situation. Take your time and make the right decision.

It is very important for the safety and well-being of both you and your car

that you make the decision of which auto towing company you would

prefer to use before you actually need to call them. Doing the research and making a decision now will save you

money, time and headaches later.

landscaping serviceHOW CAN THECONTRACTOR HELP Many landscapers offer more than just the design and installation

of planting areas. Many contractors also offer hardscape design and installation, including patios, walkways, wood or block retaining walls, irrigation systems, and more. Some contractors also offer seasonal ground maintenance, such as mowing, snow removal, and spring and/or fall clean-up.

DON’T GIVE IN TOHIGH-PRESSURE SALES You are the one who has to live with the results, and the bill, so don’t give in to high-pressure salesmanship.

IS THE CONTRACTORLICENSED AND INSURED? A quality landscaper should be fully insured and be able to provide proof.

PLANT GUARANTEE A good rule of thumb is a one-year guarantee on all plants. If a plant dies within the first year (excluding annuals of course) the plants will be replaced free of charge.

ASK FOR REFERENCES Ask for addresses of completed jobs that are similar in scale to what you have in mind. Drive by and see the results. Call references and find out if the landscaper was good about keeping the client updated, and if they finished project within the estimated time and budget.

COMMUNICATIONIS VITAL Choose a landscaper with an office staff or answering service so you can contact them when you have questions or concerns.

GET IT IN WRITING Before making a commitment, get all the details in writing. Be sure the landscaper specifies the design to be followed, provides a list of plants to be used, and all costs and terms of payment.

YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL NEW LANDSCAPE INSTALLED – NOW WHAT? Year-round maintenance is crucial to protect your landscaping. You can provide the ongoing maintenance, or you can ask a contractor to do it. Many landscapers specialize in just one or two services; however, if you shop wisely, you can find a contractor who offers a full line of landscaping services, as well as year-round grounds maintenance. By choosing a full-service contractor, you can get everything you need with only one phone call. Many times you will receive a discount when you sign up for a full year of grounds maintenance.

Landscaping contractorsoffer a variety ofservice including

design, installation, andmaintenance of your

property based on yourown individual needs and

requests. Choosing a qualitylandscaper is a crucial step. The following tips will help

Here are some tips that will help you find the right accountant for home or business:

How - to choose

a good auto body shop

Take your vehicle only to properly licensed and certified repair shops. Vehicles are much more complicated than they used to be, and you may never see internal

damage that will need to be repaired as competently as your paint job. Auto body repair is about much more than having a hammer

and spray gun. Good shop owners are continually updating their knowledge and equipment to keep up with rapidly changing auto designs and materials. They also place a premium on safety.

The right shop will take the hassle out of dealing with red tape, too. The shop owner will take photos of your vehicle, fill out the necessary forms, submit the forms and photos to your insurance company and negotiate on your behalf.

By the way, you don’t need to worry about whether your favorite shop meets with insurance company approval. The choice is strictly yours, regardless of recommendations you

receive from your insurer. A shop that partners with an insurance company may be giving concessions in order to get referrals, which can be bad for the vehicle owner.

If you’re paying for repairs yourself be aware there are different ways of making repairs, and multiple repair methods can be correct but lead to a big price difference. The old maxim about looking “too good to be true” may be a signal that you should compare the repair methods as well as prices.

Ask your friends for recommendations. It’s best to find out which local businesses have great reputations.

Finally, when you receive your estimate, ask about the shops warranty. Rust repairs will not be warrantied at any shop but for other auto body repairs look for a minimum one-year warranty on the parts and a limited lifetime warranty on repairs and paint. Ask your shop for a copy of the warranty and the final repair invoice when you pick up your vehicle. Keep these records and any maintenance records to retain the resale value of your vehicle.

There are lots of auto body shops, even in smaller

communities like ours, and most can perform any job competently and quickly.

But they are not all equal.

Although an insurer may recommend one of their DRP shops, Michigan law gives the vehicle owner the right to choose the shop without insurance influence. More information about the ways insurers may pressure customers to use their DRP shop can be found at www.stopsteering.org.

How - torent tools

IF YOU’RE ONLY USINGIT ONCE, RENT IT Our garages are stuffed with things we used once and then sold at yard sales years after purchasing them. Especially with specialized

or sophisticated tools, think about the money you’re going to spend. Will having a tool in the house permanently encourage someone to use it for the wrong reason? Will having a cool looking tool feel

as good in five years when you sell it for ten bucks?

IT’S NOT NECESSARYTO BE AN EXPERT Men are notorious for overstating their expertise, and some have paid dearly for it. The author of this article once put a rotary saw blade on a Sawzall in order to cut an opening for a skylight. After the blade whizzed off into the trees, he was grateful to have his head attached to his neck and then went to the rental store and . . .

ASK FORRECOMMENDATIONS! Rather than selecting tools, tell the people at your local rental center what your project is. The

people who work at rental centers are experienced with the tools you need. They’ll be able to make money-saving suggestions and help you avoid decapitation. They’ll not only explain how to operate the tools you need, but they’ll give you tips on how to use them well. It’s not just a matter or plugs and buttons. Good rental store clerks will know about polishes, surfaces, materials, compounds and sandpaper. When renting a tool, take advantage of the consultation that comes with it.

DON’T EXCEEDYOUR LIMITS Every tool must be used safely. It’s crucial to pay attention, and call a professional when you’re not capable of doing something on your own. Some people can operate jack-hammers, for example, while other people are flown across the room on floor waxers. Again, the people at your rental store should be able to help you evaluate your skills as well as your needs. They can also recommend local craftsmen to help you with a job that looks too big for DIY.

DON’T SEND SOMEONEELSE TO THE STORE One of the best ways to avoid problems is to go to the store yourself. The reason is obvious: you possess more knowledge about what you want to accomplish than anyone else.

As much as Americans haveembraced the Do-It-Yourself

ethic, it’s surprisinghow many of us don’t

give enough thought toidentifying the right tools,

especially for specializedwork.

Outdoor Wood Furnace

CENTRALBOILER.COM

How - to choose an

outdoor wood furnaceHOW IT WORKS The standard wood furnace looks like a small metal shed with a chimney. It stands anywhere from 30 to several hundred feet from your home and it works by

circulating water through two heat exchangers. The first is the furnace itself, in which the wood is used to heat a surrounding jacket of water.

The second is inside the house. Heated water is circulated through to the house via underground insulated piping, where it then transfers heat into your forced air furnace, boiler or radiant floor heating system. While bypassing the need for expensive fossil fuels, it works with your existing equipment and enables you to control the temperature with your thermostat. Plus, your outdoor wood furnace will heat your home’s water. You can also heat multiple buildings. Since the wood is consumed outside, in a fully enclosed furnace, you won’t have to worry about messy wood in the house, chimney fires, carbon monoxide or deterioration of your indoor air quality. Nor will you have the smoke, ashes, smells and soot buildup that you get from most ordinary indoor wood stoves. When you consider wood, it’s also much more environmentally friendly than fossil fuel. Burning it only releases the carbon dioxide that the wood would naturally release into the atmosphere over time; there is no net increase to

atmospheric carbon dioxide. The best models offer superior insulation, metal that resists warping, secondary combustion for efficiency and long, clean burning so that you’re not out in the snow at all hours tossing wood through the door. The same companies often manufacture corn and wood pellet furnaces. In farm country, shelled corn and pellets can be very inexpensive. While they won’t cut your bill to zero, like wood, they’ll cut it by half.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU? This is most economical for people who have abundant supplies of cheap or free wood. Most users have at least a couple acres of land from which to cut a steady supply of wood while growing more. More often than not, outdoor furnaces are found in rural locations, with generous space between neighbors. This isn’t necessary, but you should check local zoning restrictions and regulations before ordering one for your home. In an efficient wood furnace, the smoke is not usually an irritant, but you should be careful about the furnace’s placement, which is something your dealer can help with. You’ll have to be willing to stoke your furnace at least once a day, too. But, except for extraordinary cold and wind, once a day will do it. Do you hate high heating bills? Assuming you’ve got the wood, this furnace is the answer. People have reported saving over $4,000 a year in heating costs.

These freestanding heatsupply sources are cleaner,

more efficient and moresophisticated than many

people realize.

How - tobuy new carpet

THE INTERVIEW Start with the size of your family and the age of your children (if any). Are there pets? Is there the possibility for grandchildren or elderly parents moving in? Are there family members living outside your home who should be consulted?

Are you doing one room, several rooms, or an entire apartment or house? Now take a hard look at how your family lives. In which rooms do you spend most of your time? Is your living style relaxed or formal? Do you like everything in

its place, or do you consider casual rooms more comfortable? Do you entertain? Are the groups small or large? How often do the children bring friends home? These are practical matters you must consider.

THE MAGIC OF COLOR You may have heard that dark colors make a room look smaller. It’s true. So you should stay away from dark colors, right? Wrong! If your objective is to create a warm, cozy, and sheltered look, a smaller “feel” is exactly what you want and dark, rich colors like warm browns and rust, can work great. If a dark color is what you love, and it helps you capture the mood you want, go for it! Pastels and color tints tend to enlarge a space. These colors create a restful and soothing mood. They’re ideal when you want a formal, orderly and romantic tone. Strong contrasts of color that are lively, exciting and energetic can be a bold statement for your family’s style of living.

WHICH COLOR ISFOR YOU? If you’re redecorating, often an existing fabric or cherished piece of furniture can be a starting point and can stimulate your creativity. Working around an existing piece is an excellent way to start when making your color choice.

CHOOSING THE RIGHTCARPET “TYPE” FOR YOU To shop with confidence, you need to know what kinds of carpet are available and what each is designed to do. All carpets begin with a “loop pile”. To make a “cut pile” the tips of loops are sheared off, which produces the smooth finish velvets and other styles. Cut pile carpets are by far the most common type bought by consumers because they have the most luxurious look and feel. Here are some different carpet styles: Multilevel Loops, Level Loop, Cut and Loop or “traceries”, Velvets, Saxonies or “Plushes”, Textured Saxonies, and Friezes.

OTHER CARPET BUYINGCONSIDERATIONS Avoid bargains. Cheap carpet is easy to spot; it’s thin, lightweight and flimsily made. Buy good quality padding; it absorbs up to 90 percent of the impact of foot traffic. A higher investment in carpet padding will extend the life of your carpet. It’s worth the extra initial cost.

WHERE SHOULD I GO TO PURCHASE FLOOR COVERING? Always buy from a reputable dealer. If in doubt, contact the Better Business Bureau. Independent dealers are a good bet. They usually have a wide selection of custom goods at their disposal, plus better grade carpet pads and qualified installers.

The decision has been made. You want to purchase new

carpet and the time is now!Do you want light or dark

colors? Soft or velvety orlight and firm? Smooth or

textured? Wall to wall orbordered? There’s so much

to consider.

How - tosenior housing

It’s important to learn the terminology and the differences between senior care solutions that

are out there so you can make the right choice for your family. Senior independent living communities cater to seniors who are very independent

with few medical problems. Residents live in fully equipped private apartments. Often, residents can choose to pay for a specified number of meals per day. Frequently, there are numerous social outings and events to choose from for entertainment. Assisted Living communities are designed for seniors who are no longer able to live on their own safely but do not require the high level of care provided in a nursing home. Assistance with medications, activities of daily living, meals and housekeeping are routinely provided. Three meals per day are provided in a central dining room. Residents live in private apartments which frequently have a limited kitchen area. Staff is available 24 hours per day Nursing homes provide around-the-clock skilled nursing care for the frail elderly who require a high level of medical care and assistance. Twenty-four hour skilled nursing services are available from licensed nurses. Many nursing homes now provide short-term rehabilitative stays for those recovering from an injury, illness or surgery. Some senior housing options for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s are available. With

memory impaired, it is important to have 24-hour support and structured activities to ensure their safety and quality of life. Residential care homes, also known as adult foster care homes, are private homes that typically serve residents who live together and receive care from live-in caretakers. These homes offer assisted care services for seniors who want a more private, home-like community. Assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing and dressing are typically provided. Choosing the right type of senior living facility depends on how much care and the type of care needed. Seniors and their families are encouraged to not wait until the last minute to investigate these options. Even if you are active and still living in your own home, visit your local senior living communities so you can find the “right fit” when the time comes. Ask about activities offered, how much it will cost, payment options (some will accept Medicare and Medicaid, others are strictly private pay), whether a contract is required or a month-by-month setup is sufficient. Take a look at the apartments, perhaps share a meal in the dining room, and talk to the residents. Looking ahead to the various options available will make the transition easier when the time comes to move into a senior community and will relieve the anxiety many older adults face when they think about the future and what it might hold for them. Just knowing what is available in your community will help seniors and their families to decide which facility is the best fit.

With so many senior housing options available, it’s easy to feel confused and over-

whelmed by the vast number of care types and styles of

senior living communities.

choose an apartmentWhen you’re looking for an apartment, three

components need to fit; you, the apartment, and the apartment community.

CHECKING OUT AN APARTMENT

One of the first things you should take note of as you drive in to your appointment is the apartment community’s curb appeal. Is the community clean and neat? Is there adequate lighting? Is the landscaping appealing?

An apartment community that takes good care of the buildings and grounds will typically take good care of residents!

Once you arrive try to get a feel for the staff that maintains the apartment community. Is

the staff friendly and pleasant? Are they well informed about the community and able to answer your questions?

When viewing the apartment you should take note of the condition of the entryway and hallway leading to the apartment. Is it clean and orderly? When entering the apartment you should look at the condition of the carpet to see if it looks clean and well kept. Are the walls in good shape? Has the apartment been painted and cleaned since the last resident moved out?

Is the size adequate for your needs? Is there enough storage space? Are there any “deal breakers” as far as the condition of the apartment?

Some of the questions you should ask

• When is the apartment available?

• How much is the rent?

• When is the rent due?

• How much is the security deposit?

• What are the terms of the lease?

• What length of lease terms are available?

• Are pets allowed?

• Is there emergency maintenance service?

• Are there any rules about subletting or roommates?

• Are you allowed to make any modifications to the apartment such as painting it.

• Are there laundry facilities on site?

• What utilities are included?

• What criteria need to be met in order to qualify for the apartment – such as credit criteria, income, etc.?

You may want to bring any information you think you may need in order to lease the apartment with you the day of your appointment. If you decide to fill out an application you will need to know things like your social security number, driver’s license number, along with information such as phone numbers and addresses for your employer, landlord, and personal references.

When you check out an apartment, check out the company that manages it and staff who come with it. Just as

you know a good on site staff can make your life pleasant, so every apartment

community recognizes the value of a good resident.

How - to pair wine

with food

Keep a notebook handy in which to write down your wines and opinions. Don’t

worry about all the preten-tious language in wine

reviews. Just jot down what you think of the wine and

make up your own words to describe the flavors.

Start with the most popular varietals and

expand outward.

EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES All wine drinkers have heard that white wine is best served with white meat and red wine with red. That’s basically true, but ignores the amazing world of flavors of all kinds of wines. It also ignores the magical way in which the right wine can interact with a well-mated food dish. Wine and food should come together deliberately.

First, get to know the varietals. Experiment. Try everything once,

and try the same wine from different vintners. You needn’t spend a fortune. Good wines can be found for fewer than ten bucks, but it’s also worth the price to invest in a twenty-dollar bottle of wine once a week. On special occasions, splurge. You can be taken to heaven with a $40 cabernet. In any event, stay away

from jug wine if you want to enjoy great pairings.

RED If you want to pair red wine with red meat, begin with Cabernet and steak. Cabernet is what fans call a big red. Good “cabs” are redolent with tannins, which come from the oak in which the wine is aged as well as the grape skins. Tannins are astringent and cleanse the palate. A cab with

good tannins and a good steak can make a superb combination. People often pair Zinfandel with venison and elk, Pinot Noir with quail or duck, or – again – with steak. A good Zinfandel is peppery and goes well with spicy dishes.

With pasta and other spicy Italian or Mediterranean dishes, you really should try some Italian varietals, as well. There’s Chianti, of course, which has a unique flavor. Other Italian reds include Barbera and Barbaresco. You can almost never go wrong pairing wine and food from the same country or region, which often have been refined for centuries to accompany each other.

Here’s a short list of white wine pairings to help you get acquainted with the possibilities:

WHITESauvignon Blanc with oysters on the

half-shellPinot Grigio with peel-and-eat shrimpDry Riesling or Brut Champagne with

crab (and sourdough!)Pinot Noir (red) or Pinot Gris (white)

with salmonChardonnay with most lightly

seasoned white fishSemi-dry Riesling with barbecued

pork or chicken!

Michigan vintners, by the way, make some of the best white wines on the planet. Their fruit wines are also made to accompany food. If the owner of your favorite wine store is available, don’t hesitate to ask for advice, either. Wine and food are made for each other. To your health!

How - tohow to shop for antiques

You can buy antiques at auctions, shops, shows, and online. You may even discover treasures at garage sales and flea markets. Before you make any purchase, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, and the Professional Show

Managers Association, a not-for-profit organization representing antiques and collectibles show

producers, say it’s a smart buyer who learns about the differences between genuine antiques, reproductions, and their fake counterparts. Before you shop for antiques, it’s important to understand some terms used in the marketplace.• Bylaw, anantiqueisanitem that’s at least 100 years old.• Acollectibleisjustabout anything that people collect. If an item is labeled a vintage collectible it is at least 50 years old.• Areproductionisanitemcreated to look like an original, but that has no value in the antiques world.

Shopping &Buying TipS It’s a good idea to research antiques before you buy them. This may include visiting antique shops, malls, and auctions; talking with collectors and reputable dealers; and reading price guides, auction catalogs, books, and magazines. When shopping at an antique shop or mall, ask questions:• Howlonghaveyoubeena dealer?

• Doyoucarryreproductions?Be careful: Some reproductions are so well done that even experts can have trouble recognizing them for what they are.• Willyouguaranteethe authenticity of the item in writing? • Whatisyourreturnpolicy? When you decide to buy an item, get a written receipt that includes the seller’s name, address, and phone number; the date; a complete description of the item, including age, origin, any repairs or replacements, the price you paid, and how you paid; and, if the seller claims the item is authentic, a written guarantee. If you’re buying online, here are a few additional points to consider.• Askthesellertosendyou close-up photographs of the item.• Askiftheitemcanbepurchased and shipped on an “approval” basis. This allows you to inspect the item and perhaps have a local expert take a look at it, too. • Askthesellerhowtheitemwill be packed and shipped, and the shipping costs.

Buying aT garage and eSTaTe SaleS and flea markeTS Garage sales and estate sales may be a treasure trove of antiques and collectibles, but usually there is no guarantee an item is genuine. But that can be the fun of garage sales, you never know what you might find. Who knows, you could be the next surprised collector on Antiques Roadshow when you discover that $5 dust-covered painting is really a Picasso.

Buying and sellingantiques and collectibles

is big business.
