Curious about spray paint art? If so, you have come to the right place. In this article you will learn about this exciting world
and all the cool things you can do with just a few cans.
Let's start with where to get your aerosol cans. One of the best places to find quality colors is from online stores that cater to
graffiti artists. There are many websites that sell artist quality cans. I know it's sometimes cheaper to get them at a hardware
store, but these cans have more toxic solvents and less paint in them. Your acrylic painting will not look professional. It will
have less depth of color and will also create some health risks for you.
Don't worry, there are other ways to save money on your supplies. First of all, you can still get a few of your materials at the
hardware store or Walmart. Tranparent or Crystal Clear from the hardware store is more useful than an artist quality clear gloss.
You actually need those solvents, so that you can loosen up your colors and keep things glossy. A brand called “Colorplace”
often sold at Walmart costs only about $1 and is incredibly useful because it is fine and very controllable. I usually buy black
and white in this brand to add some subtle detail to my work.
When you go to Walmart, don't forget to pick up some plastic plates and bowls and some poster board. Keep your eyes open in
all of the different areas of the store for weird things that can be used in your spray painting. The hardware section usually has
some spatulas and sponges that are fun to play with. The kitchen aisle has some tools that might make nice scrapers. Also grab
some of those Sunday circulars and online coupon pages because you can use them too!
You can save money on cans by purchasing in bulk. Sometimes you will even get free shipping on larger orders. Find a
company that sells artist quality colors and treats you well. Purchase your cans and nozzles from them.
Spray Painting with an Airbrush
Kids are often very inspired to try spray paint
art, especially after they have seen a street
artist doing it. Painting with cans requires you
to take great care to protect your health. There
are safer ways to practice these techniques that
younger people (or adults) can enjoy. It's
possible to do all these techniques with non
toxic, water based acrylic colors and a cheap
airbrush. That way you won't have to
constantly hover, trying to control what your
kids are doing to make sure they are safe. You
can let them have fun doing their own thing
while you do yours. (Learn more about this
kind of acrylic painting at a website called
Airbrush Painting Secrets.)
Getting Set up
You will need to create a dedicated painting space. The best place is outdoors in moderate weather. A gentle breeze to carry the paint dust away from you is also ideal. If you don't have the perfect outdoor space, you can create one by using umbrellas and fans to give you the right amount of shade and wind. You can work on top of a table or you can sit Indian style on the ground. Try to find an out of the way area where you will not be bothered. Hopefully no one else will be using it, because it's very frustrating to have to continually clean up your materials and start again each time.
Household Materials
Doing spray paint art doesn't have to be expensive. There are several ways that you can cut costs if you are creative and recycle commonly used material you already own in your home. Don't throw away any kitchen sponges, plastic caps or old newspapers! They can come in handy when you are creating different effects. Keep your old newspapers in a box where you can find them easily. Collect different sized caps from your old jars to use as planets. The sponges are great for making portraits or galaxies among other things.
Spray Paint Art Secrets has a YouTube channel where you can watch these artists working. You can get a feel for all the different materials used and what you might want to keep. You can also find interesting tools at garage sales if you keep your eyes open. A good artist is constantly on the lookout for objects that might create unique effects that no one else will be able to copy.
Weather Conditions
Be mindful of weather conditions. A rainy day might seem like the perfect time to work, but if you are working with aerosol paints, it can be a problem. First of all the rain may stop you from working outside and you will have to move indoors to a well-ventilated garage. The humidity can also affect the time your colors take to dry and throw off your flow. Too much sun or wind can likewise cause serious issues.
If this is a kind of acrylic painting you both enjoy and are good at, consider getting started by creating your holiday and birthday gifts instead of shopping. It is possible to make personalized gifts year-round and use them as holiday presents. Just about everybody prefers something handmade to something that is bought in the store, and the best part is, you will save quite a bit of money throughout the year and you will get to enjoy the admiration of your friends and family.
