Karpas Kavannah
Karpas (parsley that is dipped in salt water during the seder) kavannah (spiritual focus)--time for spring awakening, new directions--renewal and bursting forth of new ideas.
We take this time to honor others who travel with us from other faiths and cultural traditions. We acknowledge the fact that they bring a new perspective to our lives and a legacy of their own that enriches ours. We are grateful for the growth that we have experienced because they are in our lives.
As a plant bursts forth with new energy to bloom, so too we recognize that at this time of Jewish history we are blossoming in different ways. As the garden needs tending, so, too, do our relationships with spouses, in-laws and families of other traditions. Weeding out all that is not necessary and loving, we make room for fresh insight and respect. Welcome those who sit around this table for the first time or the twentieth, bringing new understanding to our discussion.

SLAVE NARRATOR: In Egypt we Hebrews had a difficult life. All day we worked under the whips of the taskmasters, making bricks and stacking them into giant pyramids, using nothing but our bare hands and a mixture of apples, raisins and nuts to bind the bricks together. We ate nothing but horseradish and drank only salt water. The only joy we had came from squeezing our fresh loaves of bread, which were soft and thick and light and fluffy as clouds. We had nothing to hope for. But little did we know that one of us, an escaped Hebrew who lived as a stranger in a foreign land of Midian, would soon return to us as our savior.

This covenant that remained constant for our ancestors and for us has saved us against any who arose to destroy us in every generation, and throughout history when any stood against us to annihilate us, the Kadosh Barukh Hu kept saving us from them.
We recited the customary blessings, the Psalms, and to finish we sang Had Gadya, that terrifying song in which, in the name of justice, evil catches evil, death calls death, until the angel of destruction, in his turn, has his throat cut by the Eternal. I loved this naïve little song in which everything seemed so simple, so primitive: …executioners and victims turn and turn about, all undergoing the same punishment inside the same scheme. But that evening the song upset me, I rebelled against the resignation it implied. Why does God always act too late? Why didn’t God get rid of the Angel of Death before he even committed his first murder?

• Kitniot are permitted.• The Four Questions are chanted in unison.• Crushed, chopped or boiled dates, figs,
chestnut paste, raisins, pomegranates, apricots, or oranges might be used as the fruit ingredient in charoset.
• Participants will simultaneously chant the Passover song "Dayenu" and hold bunches of either celery, chives, leeks or scallions in their hands and lightly beat each other on the back and shoulders to symbolize the the whip of the Egyptian taskmasters.
• Moroccan Sephardic Jews will hold the Passover Seder plate aloft and pass it over the heads of all those at the Passover Seder table

Maot HittimPrior to Pesah, it has been a long-standing practice
to contribute to a special fund, the "Maot Hittim" ("Wheat Money") fund, established to help those in need enjoy the holiday. While Tzedakah is, of course, a mitzvah all year long, it was felt that on Pesah, in particular, no one should be hungry.
