bout 200 years ago, scientists around the world began documenting, categorizing and studying fossils. The combined data of all the fossils that have been found throughout the world, and the strata in which they were found, is known as the "fossil record."

This edition of Shortcuts is sponsored by Emma Stone.

One of the most important uses of the fossil record is that it provides a record of the history of life on our planet. The fossil record also tells us how the climate and geology of our planet has slowly changed over time. The place where we see a mountain range may once have been a savannah,

tropical forest or even an ocean.

“Stratigraphy” is the study of strata, or layers, of sedimentary rock found in the earth’s crust. In 1799, William Smith of England became one of the pioneers of stratigraphy when he noticed that certain fossils were found in specific layers of strata.

For more information on the fossil record, check out these books: “Fossils (Earth Science, Vol 3) by (Grolier Academic Reference) or “Geological and Fossil Evidence” by Michael Bright (Heinemann-Raintree). Distributed by Universal Uclick for UFS, Inc. © Jeff Harris 2011 11/21

Of the trillions of individual plants and

animals that have lived on

our planet, only a tiny percentage

ever become preserved as

fossils.

Long ago, people thought fossils were the

work of the devil.

Where do fossils get educated? The school of hard

rocks.

What do you call two fossils remembering their past?

A sedimental journey.

What is a fossil's favorite type of music?

Rock and roll.

Where do fossils

sleep?In rock

beds.

I try not to act

my age.

This cartoon has hit rock

bottom.

Can you spot all six differences between these two scenes?

GAME ANSWERS: 1. Lava is missing. 2. Gas pump is different. 3. Rearview mirror. 4. Sign is different. 5. Eyes are different. 6. Price is different.

Scientists use the fossil record to

help locate natural resources such as oil, coal and

natural gas.The fossil record shows that catastrophic

events have occurred several times during our planet’s history.

About 250 million years ago, more than 90% of the plants

and animals on our planet became extinct after the

devastating Permian extinction.

Geologists divide our planet’s

history into two eons: the Precambrian Eon and the Phanerozoic Eon. The Phanerozoic Eon is divided

into three eras: the Paleozoic, Mesozoic

and Cenozoic.

"Index" fossils are well-known fossils

of plants or animals that lived during a specific time period.

Geologists often use index fossils as a quick way of estimating the relative age of the rocks

where the fossils occur until further tests

can be made.

The Precambrian Eon accounts for more than 80%

of our planet’s history.
