The National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC) conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) to determine eligibility for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research. The Test is conducted in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Applications and Electronic Science.


University Grants Commission Conducts the National Eligibility Test (NET) every year at various centers across the country. This year about eight lakh candidates had registered for the test and there are 79 coordinating universities.



Candidates who have secured at least 55%

marks (without rounding off) in Master’s Degree OR equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC are eligible for this Test.

The Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Persons with disability (PWD) category candidates who have secured at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s degree or equivalent examination are eligible for this Test.

Who can write this test?

Candidates who have appeared OR will be appearing at the qualifying Master’s degree (final year) examination may also apply for this Test.

However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be considered eligible for award of JRF/Lectureship eligibility only after they have passed their Master’s degree examination or equivalent with at least 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST/PWD

Such candidates must complete their P.G. degree examination within two years from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified


Who can write this test?

The Test consists of three papers. All the

three papers consists of only objective type questions and the test is usually conducted on the last Sunday of June and December, every year in two separate sessions.

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION :

Paper I


shall be of general nature, intended to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate.

Sixty (60) multiple choice questions of two marks each will be given, out of which the candidate would be required to answer any fifty (50).

In the event of the candidate attempting more than fifty questions, the first fifty questions attempted by the candidate would be evaluated.


Paper - II Consists of 50 objective type compulsory

questions based on the subject selected by the candidate. Each question carries 2 marks.

Paper-III consists of 75 objective type compulsory questions from the subject selected by the candidate. Each question carries 2 marks.

All questions of Paper-II and Paper-III are compulsory, covering entire syllabus (including all electives, without options).

Paper II &III


Syllabus is King:

Almost 85% of UGC NET examination questions are from the content of UGC NET syllabus. You should always spend your time in reading the contents related to the syllabus to have a cutting edge.

SYLLABUS


Minimum marks for passingThe candidates are required to obtain minimum marks separately in Paper-I, Paper-II and Paper-III as given below:

STEP I

Step II: Amongst those candidates who have cleared step I, a merit list will be prepared subject-wise and category-wise using the aggregate marks of all the three papers secured by such candidates.

Step III: Top 15% candidates (for each subject and category), from the merit list mentioned under step II, will be declared NET qualified for eligibility for lectureship only.

Step IV: A separate merit list for the award of JRF will be prepared from amongst the NET qualified candidates figuring in the merit list prepared under step III.


Minimum marks for passing


Convert syllabus into topics◦ General paper – 10 topics◦ English paper II ( 10 topics)◦ Paper III (Core Group 2+ 15 = 17 topics)

Thoroughly study the entire syllabus and understand each topic.

Write MCQs for each topic◦ General paper I - at least 50 questions on each topic◦ English paper II - at least 200 questions on each topic ◦ English paper III - at least 200 questions on each topic

including the optional.

How to Study


Reference books


1. No need to buy all books2. Use the library3. Compile topic wise , Multiple choice

questions, from the books in the manner specified above.

How to study


Good things- Earlier there was no guarantee that you will

pass this examination. But now there is a guarantee.

Micro study of each topic is needed Presentation or writing skill is not required. Results will be available in time.

Bad things- Percentage of passing will increase. Scope for copying and other mal-practices.

New pattern is easy or tough?


Students must solve previous year papers. For more practice students should refer the

Other tips

You will have to study regularly for Three months, 8 hours per day

No need to join any tuition or private classes.

Interchange of notes will help. Use of internet is advisable. Reading and writing blogs on internet will

help. Solve some online practice tests available

on websites.
