How to Professional Choosing Right Graphic Photo Paper

When the proper image is printed on it’s ideal paper type, it gives the viewer a chance to experience the print rather than just look at it. The RC Lustre photo paper is where I think all images need to get their start.

This is helpful for several reasons. One, lustre can handle a wide variety of image types, whether they be color, neutral,contrasty or soft; and two, lustre can be a great indicator of whether or not a different paper type would be of greater benefit to the final printed product for a certain image.

Let’s say you have an image with a lot of contrast, this does display well on Fuji Lustre due to the nice low D-max, however, for the images that need that little more impact Fuji Pearl would be something to consider. Pearl has a great dynamic range, and looks stellar with black and white images. In addition, unlike a lustre surface, Pearl can really give life and pop to bright colors, something we see a lot of in kids portraits.

Another option for bold color or high contrast images that really need to stand out is Kodak’s Metallic photo paper. This is a paper surface that has the high gloss finish of the Fuji Pearl paper, but shows off detail in a crisper fashion.The level of sharpness found in the Metallic Paper is brilliant, whether it be dress detail on a bride, or the cracked and chipping paint on an old door. Kodak Metallic also gives voice to the louder colors that other surfaces just can’t.The right picture printed on this surface type can really jump off the paper and grab a person’s attention.

Now, if contrast and pop aren’t a part of your shooting aesthetic, Rc Matte Photo paper is most likely the way to go. This truly smooth paper gives a gentle and soft feeling to the images that need it. Subtly lit newborn and infant portraits, intimate bride moments, the images that aren’t too heavy, dark, or busy. If your images are a little desaturated, or warm, or have a lot of empty space, Rc Matte Photo paper can enhance those qualities for the viewer, and it looks downright lovely with black and whites (low contrast of course).
