Data Protection Manager 2007

Thank you in advance for your interest in Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager2007 (DPM).

DPM 2007 is a key member of the Microsoft System Center family of management products, designed to help Information Technology (IT) professionals manage their Windowsenvironment. DPM 2007 is the new standard for Windows backup and recovery providingreliable protection and rapid recovery of data for both IT professionals and end-users.

DPM 2007 delivers continuous data protection for Microsoft application and file servers usingseamlessly integrated disk and tape-based media. DPM significantly reduces the costs andcomplexities associated with data protection through advanced technology for enterprises of all sizes.

The image below shows what a typical DPM 2007 deployment might look like. Thisdeployment topology is not necessarily reflective of you particular deployment.

Figure 1.1 shows the protection process. This process involves creating and maintaining afull replica of the protected data and regularly creating recovery points of the synchronizedreplica. The replica serves as a full backup of the protected data. The recover points allowyou to recover previous versions of the protected data.

Figure 1.1 DPM protection process

DPM provides disk-based and tape-based protection for your data, which can be deployedas:• Disk-to-Disk (D2D) . Method of backup in which data from one computer is stored on the hard disk of

another computer. You can use this method to backup your DPM server using your existingalternative tape product.

• Disk-to-Tape (D2T) . Traditional method of backing up data from one computer to a storage mediasuch as tape.

• Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape (D2D2T) . This method combines D2D and D2T for extra protection. D2D2Tprovides the rapid recovery benefits of disk-based storage in the short term and archive storage for critical data using tape-based storage in the long term.

Data Recovery

The recovery process involves choosing a previous version of the data source from thestored recovery points on the DPM server, and then restoring a copy of the selected data toits point of origin on the protected server or to an alternate location. The recovery options

available to you as a DPM administrator vary depending on the type of data protected andthey type of data which you would like to recover.

About these Labs

While performing the steps in these labs you are an administrator; either a system

administrator, or database or email administrator who previously relied on dedicated backuppersonnel for the Contoso Ltd. Company. Your company will use DPM to protect Exchangedata, and then to recover data due to data corruption problems that have occurred. TheDPM tutorial provides you with lessons that contain detailed instructions. The instructionshave been designed so that you can complete the lessons in the lab even if you do not haveextensive experience with DPM 2007.

These labs were not designed to show you each and every administrative feature availablein DPM however they will guide you through learning and understanding key features. Theyalso provide you with a pre-configured testing ground in which you can learn and demo DPM2007. Most of the tasks that you perform in DPM can be automated by using Power Shellscripting. These labs will provide you with the steps to complete certain tasks using theDPM console as well as using Power Shell scripting.

As you can see when you start the labs key pre-requisites have already been configured foryou:

DC01 - Active Directory has already been installed and configured. Both memberservers have already been joined to the domain ( contoso.int ).

EX01 - Exchange 2003 SP2 has already been installed and configured. Two storagegroups with 4 mailbox databases per storage group have already been configured. Test

users have been created and enabled on the Exchange server.

DPM01 - Data Protection Manager 2007 SP1 has already been installed for you. There has been no configuration done yet though as this will be done in the lab. Twoadditional hard disks (2 * 16GB) have been added to the server however they have not yetbeen added to DPM.

Image change requirements• Need to add the 2 nd disk to DPM and add it via Windows

• Run the command regsvr32 %windir%\System32\vss_ps.dll on DPM server

• Need to install the exmerge stand alone utility on EX01 (copy exchmem.dll file)

• Remove netproxy from all user accounts under IE connections

• Install .netframework 3.5 on DPM01

• Install this hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943295 on DPM01

Optional Pre-requisite Step

If you are interested in exploring the tape library features of DPM you can download andinstall the Firestreamer media changer from http://www.firestreamer.com/fs/changer-

install.aspx .

This application allows you to configure a 5 drive, 200 slot media library in your labenvironment. Details on how to use this application are provided athttp://www.firestreamer.com/fs/changer-config.aspx .

The reason that we have not pre-installed this application in the lab is that it is currently inbeta therefore it will need to be downloaded and installed when the labs are run.

There will not be detailed instructions provided in this lab for installing and configuring thisvirtual library.

4 P ROTECTING EXCHANGE S ERVER 2003Objective: In this step, you create a protection group that you configure to protect a storagegroup on a computer running Exchange Server. You use the Create New Protection Group

Wizard to guide you through the steps to create your protection group.Purpose: To start protecting storage groups on your computer running Exchange Server, youmust create a protection group.

Tasks Detailed steps

.1 Configure ExchangeServer Protection

.1 On the Administrator Console, click theProtection tab.

.2 Under Actions click Create Protection Group .

.3 On the Welcome to the new ProtectionGroup wizard click next.

.4 Expand EX01 | All Exchange Storage Groups .

Note : Due to the limitations of the virtual environment this steps make take some time to complete.

.5 Select SG01 and SG02 and then click Next .Note : The selected databases are added to theSelected members box.

.2 Selecting a Name andProtection Method forthe Protection Group

.1 On the Select Data Protection Method page,in the Protection group name box, typeExchange Storage Groups.

Note : You can select short-term protection usingeither disk or tape, or you can select long-term protection using only tape.

In this step, if your virtual lab does not include virtualtape hardware, you will only be able to select short-term protection using disk-based protection.

.2 Select the I want short-term protection usingcheckbox, and then select Disk from the drop-down list.

.3 Click Next.

.3 Specify Exchange

Protection Options

.1 Prior to configuring Exchange protection you

need to ensure that the ESE.dll and ESEUTTIL.EXEhave been copied from \\EX01\c$\ProgramFiles\Exchsrvr\bin to the C:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin directory onDPM01 .

.2 Point to Run Eseutil to check data integrity .Note: To those of you familiar with protecting data inExchange, you should recognize the inclusion of

eseutil. To those of you not familiar with Exchangebackups, eseutil is used to validate whether the datais correct. That process consumes a lot of resources.DPM allows you the option to offload that resourceneed from the production Exchange server to the

back-end DPM server. There is one caveat here, for disk backup the tool runs on the DPM server. For tape backups it would still run on the Exchangeserver.

.3 Click Next .

.4 Specify Short TermGoals

.1 On the Specify Short-Term Goals page, type 5days as the Retention range .

Note : The retention range is how long you need your backed-up data available. For example, you decide if

you need today's data to be available a week fromnow, two weeks from now, or possibly a year fromnow.

.2 In the Synchronization frequency section, select 1 hour as your option.

Note : The default behavior is to synchronize every 15 minutes, which means that the DPM server willnever be more than 15 minutes behind the server it is protecting. The average Recovery Point Objective(RPO) becomes 15 minutes from any crises if theserver or disk is critically impacted. We have foundhowever that synchronizing this frequently does not

produce additional benefit over a 1 hour synchronization period.

.3 Click Next .

.4 Point to Disk Space Allocated in DPM .

.5 Click Next .Note : If you would like to review the space that DPMhas automatically allocated for this protection group

you can click on Modify.

.5 Specify Long-Term

Goals

Note : These steps will only be available if you haveadded a virtual tape library as noted above.

.1 On the Specify long-Term Goals page, type 7years as the Retention range .

Note: The retention range is how long you need your backed-up data available. For example, you may besubject to one or more industry regulations (e.g.Sarbanes Oxley or “SOX”) where you are mandatedto retain your data for seven years.

.1 In the Synchronization frequency section, acceptthe Weekly option.

Note: The default behavior is to perform a fullbackup once per week, which is usually more thanenough considering that most recoveries will now be

done from the disk-based replica instead of relyingon nightly incremental or differential tape backups.

.2 Click Next twice.

.2 Choose Replica Method .1 On the Choose Replica Creation Method page, click Next .

.2 Note : By default, replication will beginimmediately. However, you can choose to havereplication begin at a later time or manuallytransfer the data using removable media.

.3 Create the ProtectionGroup

.1 On the Summary page, review the tasks that DPMis set to perform to create the protection group, and then click Create Group .

Note : When the creation process is complete, DPMdisplays a Confirmation Page where you can view theresults of creating the protection group task.

.3 After the tasks complete successfully, on theConfirmation Page, click Close .

.2 In DPM Administrator Console, on the Protectiontab, expand the Exchange Storage Groupsprotection group, and then verify that thedatabases you selected are protected and thestatus is OK .

Note : It may take a minute for the replica to verify.

5 C REATE P ROTECTION GROUPS USING DPM S HELL

Now that we have seen how you can create a protection group using the DPM managementshell we are now going to complete the same steps using the DPM management shell. In

order to do this we will need to delete the existing protection group that we just created.Wait until the initial replica creation for this protection group has completed prior toproceeding with the next series of steps.

Tasks Detailed steps

.1 Delete the existingprotection group

.1 On the Administrator Console, click the Protectiontab.

.2 Right click on the protection group namedExchange Storage Groups and choose StopProtection of group .

.3 When prompted to decide whether or not you wish

to keep the protected data select Deleteprotected data and click Stop Protection tocontinue.

.2 Locating the DataSource

.1 On the desktop, double-click DPM ManagementShell .

.2 Type the following command and press ENTER:

$ps = Get-ProductionServer -DPMServerNameDPM01 | where {$_.machinename -eq "EX01"}

Note : By using the | (pipe) command to send theoutput to the where clause we are limiting the number of servers that will be returned.

.3 Type the following command and press ENTER:$ps

Note : Here we can confirm that the where clauseworked correctly. This view shows the server domainand the protection state. A production server is any server that has the DPM protection agent installed onit.

.4 Type the following command and press ENTER:

$ps | fl

Note : Here we can see the same list of servers

however we have used the | (pipe) command. Thiscommand lets us send the output to the fl commandwhich produces a f ormatted l ist.

.5 Type the following command and press ENTER:
