How  to  Resolve  a  Critical  RAID  Status

1. Understand  the  meaning  of  a  critical  RAID  status  When  the  status  of  a  RAID  array  becomes  “Critical”  it  means  your  redundant  RAID  (RAID  level  1,  5,  6,  10  or  50)  is  running  on  the  degrade  mode.  Your  data  is  accessible  but  the  RAID  array  is  vulnerable.    Note:  The  “Critical”  status  will  need  to  be  resolved  immediately.      There  are  two  methods  to  view  and  check  the  RAID  Array  detail  information:    

a. First  -­‐  During  system  POST,  you  can  enter  the  RocketRAID  BIOS  with  the  hotkey  ctrl-­‐h  and  check  the  array  Status.  

   

b.     Second  -­‐  Using  the  Web  RAID  Management  Software  (WebGUI)  click  on  the  Logical  tab,  then  the  Status  of  the  RAID.

2. Critical  RAID  Array  status  messages  a. When  an  array  is  missing  one  or  more  disk  members.

Note:  An  array  with  a  critical  status  means  there  is  a  Missing  /  Offline  disk  member  and  the  disk  is  not  detected  by  the  RAID  controller.  It  is  recommended  that  you  check  the  connection  of  the  SATA/SAS  cable  (Power  and  Data)  before  doing  anything  else.    An  unstable  power  supply  or  enclosure  will  cause  the  disk  to  not  work.  Try  switching  the  power  connector  or  the  disk  bay  of  the  enclosure  can  help  to  identify  the  issue.      If  the  original  Missing  (/Offline)  disk  member  cannot  be  re-­‐detected  after  you  resolved  SATA/SAS  cable  or  enclosure  issue,  please  follow  below  section  “RAID  Member  is  required  to  rebuilt”.    If  the  Missing  (/Offline)  disk  is  dead  you  will  have  to  add  a  new  disk  to  the  RAID  array  that  is  the  same  or  of  larger  capacity.  It  is  recommended  to  using  the  same  model  new  disk  to  replace  the  bad  one.  After  replacing  the  bad  disk  with  a  new  one,  boot  to  OS  and  follow  below  steps  to  rebuild  the  critical  RAID  array:  

i. Log-­‐in  WebGUI  >    ii. Switch  to  the  “Logical”  tab  >    iii. Click  the  “Maintenance”  Link  >    iv. Click  the  “Add  Disk”  button  of  the  popup  menu>  

 v. Select  the  new  disk  and  click  the  “Submit”  button.  

 

vi. Keep  checking  the  Array  rebuilding  percentage  and  wait  for  100%  completed.

 Note:  For  a  non-­‐IOP  products  (RocketRAID  1xxx  or  2xxx),  the  rebuilding  or  other  background  task  can  only  be  run  under  OS  using  the  web  RAID  GUI.  

b. One  of  the  RAID  members  required  to  be  rebuilt.  View  from  BIOS

 When  you  meet  the  critical  status,  please  follow  below  steps  to  resolve  the  issue:  

i. Booting  up  OS  ii. Install  and  run  the  hptsvr  program  of  the  WebGUI  iii. Log-­‐in  WebGUI  iv. Switch  to  the  Logical  tab  v. Check  the  Array  rebuilding  percentage  and  wait  for  100%  completed.

c. RAID5  or  RAID6  required  parity-­‐rebuild.  Array  status  show  critical  but  all  the  Member  disks  show  Normal  status.  

 

 

When  you  meet  the  critical  status,  you  should  install  and  run  the  hptsvr  program  of  the  WebGUI  to  start  rebuild  the  RAID.  

 

d. Array  require  rebuilt.

When  you  meet  the  critical  status,  please  follow  below  steps:  i. Click  “Maintenance”  link.  ii. Click  “rebuild”  button  of  the  popup  menu  and  star  rebuilding  iii. Keep  checking  the  Array  rebuilding  percentage  and  wait  for  100%  completed.

3.     Auto  Rebuilding  with  SPARE  HDD    When  the  status  of  a  RAID  array  becomes  “Critical”  it  means  your  redundant  RAID  (RAID  level  1,  5,  6,  10  or  50)  is  running  on  the  degrade  mode.      Rebuilding  or  repairing  the  critical  RAID  can  be  automatically  started  when  a  SPARE  HDD  is  configured.  As  soon  as  the  RAID  becomes  critical  the  SPARE  HDD  will  be  used  to  repair  the  degraded  RAID  array.  Rebuild  times  vary  depending  the  total  size  of  the  RAID  array.

4.  Enable  Auto  Rebuilding      When  the  status  of  a  RAID  array  becomes  “Critical”  it  means  your  redundant  RAID  (RAID  level  1,  5,  6,  10  or  50)  is  running  on  the  degrade  mode.      Rebuilding  or  repairing  the  critical  RAID  can  be  automatically  started  when  the  option  Enable  Auto  Rebuild  is  enabled.  When  a  new  HDD  is  added  to  the  RocketRAID  controller  the  new  HDD  will  help  to  rebuild  the  critical  RAID  array..  Rebuild  times  vary  depending  the  total  size  of  the  RAID  array.
