Meet Our Designers

Alison Higgins: Alison was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii. Her parents owned and operated a plant nursery in Waimea for most of her childhood, and this spurred her love of botanicals. She learned to make lei in elementary school. Alison, her siblings, and friends would pick ti leaves and plumeria, make lei and sell them on the side of the road. At age 17 she started working at a florist shop at a resort on the Kohala Coast. She became assistant manager by 18, and then manager for 5 years, where she began to make contacts and create relationships with coordinators on the Island. Later, she worked exclusively for small ag related businesses on the Big Island, including the Hawaiian Vanilla Co. and Rob Farms, a large-scale organic farm in Waimea. In 2012, Alison decided to open Grace Flowers Hawaii. She chose the name to honor her grandmother Grace who was a florist herself in her younger years.

Drawing off of knowledge she gained working for small local businesses, she slowly built up Grace Flowers Hawaii from doing everything herself, then adding a few casual employees the first few years, to employing a mix of 15 amazing casual, part time and full-time employees (before COVID-19). Grace Flowers Hawaii works with numerous resorts and coordinators across the Big Island and has the honor of being on many of their preferred vendors lists. The shop has grown from designing a handful of weddings the first year to the team averaging 35 weddings and events monthly before life changed pace and events shut down in March 2020. The Grace Flowers Hawaii shop is currently still open six days a week and Alison is getting back to her roots with a small plant nursery outside her shop on top of the fresh flower bar, lei and arrangements for sale. They have even created a GFH sticker line with fun plant puns like "It's the CYMB-ple things in life" with a picture of cymbidium orchids. They are also still offering contactless delivery across most of the Big Island and shipping tropical flowers, foliage, lei and lei making kits. Although Alison has no formal education or floral training, she has won awards at the Honolulu lei contest for her lei making, and she and the Grace Flowers Team has been published several times in Florist Review Magazine. This year her and her staff was thrilled to have one of their floral dresses make the cover of Florist Review Magazine (June 2020 edition). They have also been featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, on the Wedding Chicks blog and many other publications for their floral work. Alison has been working professionally with flowers for over 20 years, and still strives to continually improve her design and management styles.

Poppy Parsons, AIFD, CDF, CAFA: Poppy Parsons grew up in a small town, Hazlet, in rural South West Saskatchewan. Poppy lived right across the back alley from her Grandparents and spent much of her childhood playing in their garden. She married the love of her life Kelly Parsons and moved to the Parsons’ family farm in 1995. Much of Poppy’s inspiration for her floral design & floral art comes from the time spent checking cows, fixing fences, and helping Kelly on the farm. Her love of nature and flowers was introduced by her Grandparents and continues with the time spent in the pastures and hills of her family’s farm. Poppy bought Smart Flowers in downtown Swift Current in 2007. Her professional

florist & floral art career started when she achieved her Certified Floral Design (CFD) in 2012 and was thrilled to be inducted into American Institute of Floral Design in 2014 and into Canadian Academy of Floral Art in 2016. Poppy has volunteered on the fresh procurement team & as an assistant in the floral room at AIFD symposium. She also has assisted, co-presented & presented for many stage presentations at wholesale shows & workshops in Canada. She is also a floral float decorator with Fiesta Floats for the Rose Parade. Poppy loves to travel for pleasure and to learn from many other floral artists across North America; she represents her prairie roots everywhere she goes!

Brenna Quan AIFD: Brenna is an award winning floral artist, educator and freelancer, based in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. Formerly a dancer turned flower shop owner and event designer, her experience lends well to sharing her knowledge, creativity and artistry with those who also have a passion for expressing through flowers and nature. She jumps on any opportunity to create and exhibit botanical art to bring public awareness to the possibilities and emotional impact of flowers! Publications include contributions to Florists’ Review and Canadian Florist magazines, as well as a few compilation books. Hawai’i has always owned a piece of her heart and she is thrilled to have been invited to be a part of this special joining of creative forces! For more of her design inspiration, you can find her on Instagram @brenna_quan.

Dorothy Reynolds-Yadao: Born and raised on Kauai, surrounded by unspoiled natural beauty, Dotty tries to incorporate that lushness of tropicals into any florals that she designs. Her first experience in the floral industry came 37 years ago when her mother, an Anthurium grower, bought a flower shop and asked Dotty to come back to Kauai and be her partner in the business. Self-taught and producing "adequate" designs, Dotty had the good fortune of having a vacationing floral designer of Rose Bowl floats wander into the shop. He spent the day giving her a private crash course floral design workshop. Serendipity! Several floral design workshops sponsored by Flora-Dec, an eye for color and hands on experience bring us to today. Dotty enjoys the challenge

of painting the brides' visions in flowers.

Sue Tabbal-Yamaguchi, AIFD, CFD, EMC: Born and raised on the island of Oahu, as a little girl Sue loved to play in the garden at home, picking flowers and making lei and arrangements. Years later Sue opened a retail store in 1992 in Kakaako that eventually became a flower shop, Su-V Expressions that specializes in wedding floral design. Self-taught at first, Sue then went on to expand her skills by attending floral classes, and in 2015 attained her AIFD (American Institute of Floral Designers) and the following year in 2016 she received her EMC (European Masters Certificate). Sue has competed in several floral competitions and has received top honors. Sue enjoys working with her couples on their vision for their wedding florals. She says the best part of her job is making sure that every floral detail is taken care of and loves being able to see it all come together on her clients' wedding day.

Meet our Island Directors

John Gordines: Johnny has been in the agriculture industry for the past 44 years. He retired in 2012 as manager for the University of Hawaii Kauai Agriculture Research Center for CTAHR on Kauai after 32 years of service. Both he and his wife Theresa are fulltime growers, exporters and designers of tropical flowers and foliage at their farm in upcountry Kapahi, Kauai. Johnny serves as president of the Hawaii Tropical Flowers and Foliage Association-Kauai, also Kauai Director for the Hawaii Floriculture and Nursery Association and serves on the executive board of the Kauai County Farm Bureau. Johnny’s passion is to promote the growing and exporting of Kauai/Hawaii flowers and nursery plants for a sustainable/profitable Hawaii.

Carver Wilson: Carver Wilson began growing Proteas on Maui in December of 1974 after graduating from Johnston College at the University of Redlands in California. While he did not study agriculture, his grandparents were farmers and ranchers in his native Kansas and his father an Ag Economist at the University of Hawaii. Inspired by the potential in Protea, he, along with a college friend and several angel investors, set about planting one of the first Protea farms on Maui. He continues to enjoy all aspects of the farm and the business that Maui Floral has become working alongside his wife Maureen. Maui Floral has evolved from the farm to include shipping Hawaii's Protea and tropical flowers to markets across the state and to the mainland. He has participated internationally in the commercialization of Proteas as well. While away from the business he enjoys golf, working in the yard and going to the beach.

Kathleen Yoshinaga: My father started a retail florist in downtown Honolulu in 1934. After graduating the University of Hawaii, I took over the business in 1975. We were a full service florist. Forty years later, the business was sold in 2015. Along the way I’ve learned a lot about business and farming. Currently, I still work on flowers for friends, do real estate sales and volunteer for organizations that are important to me.
