To tool a Mandala, it is important that all impressions are equally spaced and symmetrical. Using a Grid Template will help you. STEP 1: On paper or vellum, mark a center dot. STEP 2: Draw vertical and horizontal lines through dot, equally spaced (90 degrees). Then lines equally spaced between those (at 45 degrees.). Then again between lines (at 22.5 degrees). How To Set-Up A Grid ForTooling A Mandala Design

A Mandala Grid TemplateFor your convenience, there is a Grid on the next page ready to print. To create your own, you will need: paper, ruler, compass, pencil and a stylus for transferring your design to cased leather - or create a grid on a computer and print.

A Mandala is a complex geometric design that is usually circular in form and can be both inspirational and therapeutic - plus fun to create..

STEP 3: Using a ruler, mark dots from center dot out on one line, equally spaced at 1/4” intervals between each dot.

How To Draw Your Own Grid: (All Step grid illustrations are reduced in size.)

STEP 4: Use a compass to draw circles from the center dot at each dot.

Position your stamp on grid and mark position lightly by outlining it with a pencil or pressing it into the paper. Repeat your design around grid. If stamp impressions overlap, move out along lines at same distance. If you want more space between impressions for another stamp, move further out along lines at same distance.

How To Use The Grid:

Grid Template: Actual Size - ready to print. Make multiple copies for testing patterns.ALWAYS PRACTICE your pattern on scrap leather.

Grid can be made with 16 radiating lines through center as shown above, or more or less depending on the needs of your design.

You can also use the grid when adding swivel knife cuts or other tooled designs. Draw your design on the grid. Then transfer these lines with stylus onto your cased leather as you would a standard tooling pattern. TIP: Use blue painters tape to temporarily hold pattern in position over leather.

Swivel Knife Cut Positions

Once you have planned your design pattern on the paper grid, mark impression positions with a small dot on grid. Then place your pattern on your cased leather and transfer the dots to the leather using a stylus. Press heavily enough so dots transfer to the leather. When you stamp the impression, the dot will be covered and not show.

Mark dots where you plan to stamp an impression. ONLY the dots will transfer to cased leather.

Dots will be covered by impression.
