Innovation

Advantech Wireless is the world’s foremost expert in GaN based HPA/BUC’s technology and products. Smaller, Lighter, More Powerful than conventional technology. Increased power efficiency, reduced power dissipation, more linear amplitude response .

GaN

Our award-winning Earthstation designs are extremely successful in massively reducing the physical space and electrical power requirements, which also reduces the costs tremendously.

Extreme Earthstation Integration

Most scalable and modular family of hubs and

terminals in the market with lowest TCO (Total Cost of

Ownership)

Remote upgrade capabilities via Software Key provide

additional capacity and features when needed.

TDMA – The Saviour?

• Can be inefficient • Poor for sustained/streaming traffic

Eg. video, file transfers

• Allows sharing (statistical multiplexing) of a carrier by different sources of traffic

• All satellite resources are used, nothing is wasted: less OPEX

• The ‘bursty’ nature means Great for small sections of occasional

traffic Eg. web requests, M2M, Messaging

But ignoring these applications would be unacceptable

Multi-Frequency -

Another solution - SCPC

• Physical layer – SCPC is better than TDMA (bits/Hz), assuming a full pipe

• Overcomes TDMA framing overheads • Bits/Hz→ Bits of traffic information per

Hz of satellite bandwidth • The higher the bits/Hz the more

efficient the access scheme • Less satellite resources required to

carry the traffic: less OPEX

• Great…But where do we use such carriers? • The usage is changing constantly • And there are 100’s (if not 1,000’s) of sites

If only we had a network that could flex to meet demand…

Single Channel Per Carrier

…Advantech Wireless call it A-SAT™

What is A-SATTM ?

11

A-SATTM patent pending technology uses flexible short burst DVB-RCS (MF-TDMA) for very dynamic traffic loads

i.e. internet traffic, SCADA, banking ATM machines, etc

A-SATTM technology uses highly efficient (bits/Hz) DVB-S2 (SCPC) for fixed traffic loads

i.e. video streaming, content distribution, trunking data

Dynamic switching between access modes based on traffic conditions, or other defined criteria (time of day, rain fades, etc)

Page 12: How To Summon Up Those Darn Clouds When You Need Them2... · © 2013 Advantech Wireless Inc © 2014 Advantech Wireless Inc 1 How To Summon Up Those Darn Clouds When You Need Them

A-SAT™ Performance Carrier Access Efficiency

SCPC is very efficient if carrier is fully utilized.

MF-TDMA is more efficient than SCPC at 50% utilization or less

Expressed as bits/Hz, i.e., throughput achieved in available bandwidth

Page 13: How To Summon Up Those Darn Clouds When You Need Them2... · © 2013 Advantech Wireless Inc © 2014 Advantech Wireless Inc 1 How To Summon Up Those Darn Clouds When You Need Them

A-SATTM Switching Triggers

• Manual switching of SCPC/MF-TDMA at any time via the NMS

Manual switching

• MF-TDMA to SCPC when the traffic volume on the RL exceeds (from RCS to SCPC) a certain bit rate threshold for a minimum period of time

• SCPC to MF-TDMA when the traffic volume on the RL is below (from SCPC to RCS) a certain bit rate threshold for a minimum

Traffic volume

• Switch request from MF-TDMA to SCPC when it detects the beginning of a pre-configured session (with IP filter). Example:

a. Start of a Multicast session (use IP destination address), b. Start of a large file transfer (use IP destination address) c. Start of a video or other application requiring minimal jitter

(with specific ToS).

Pre-configured session

© 2014 Advantech Wireless Inc 14

• NMS initiated waveform change based on a schedule (time of day application). Ex. Pre-scheduled interactive video conference at high rate

Scheduled Event

• Modem waveform switch request from MF-TDMA to SCPC (or vice versa) when it detects a change from High variability to low variability. For high variability, MF-TDMA is better. For low variability, SCPC is better

Traffic Variability

• Switching based on the link quality. As an example, if the link is below a certain threshold not handled by RCS, a switch to a more robust SCPC link

Link Quality

A-SAT™ Summary

Statistical multiplexing provides huge gains by sharing bandwidth among many users

18

TDMA transmission Burst-like traffic flow

SCPC transmission Constant traffic flow

Technology dynamically adapts the satellite physical link to maximize efficiency based on application and traffic flow

Satellite efficiency is optimized using continuous carrier transmission (SCPC) waveforms, such as DVB-S2 or TCC for low speed, low latency

Voice of Experience

19

• Choice is required for the switching criteria • Choice is required for the SCPC carrier technology

• Dependent on throughput and latency • Eg. DVB-S2 block coding vs Turbo convolutional coding

• Customers like open standards • Sometimes those SCPC carriers need to be very large

(150Mbps+), even when the TDMA traffic is almost nothing • Sometimes there needs to be many TDMA carriers, even with

small pools of terminals • Avoid visits from the Engineer

• Deliver as much functionality as possible on day one, and then provide software key upgrades

After deploying such systems for some time, we have learnt
