Wandering Off Could be Dangerous

If you’re lost in the wilderness, the worst thing you can do is start wandering around. The wilderness is characteristically deceptive, with trees and rocks all looking a little bit alike. If you’re lost, you’re more likely to walk away from help as opposed to towards it, so remember – stay put. If you’re in a dangerous location, move to the closest safety and wait there.

But why get lost when you can avoid the uncertainty altogether? Taking note of distinct physical landmarks can help you make a mental map of the area, making it easier for you to stick together and giving you a point of reference.

If the group becomes separated, a search and rescue may ensue, but if you and your group settle on a meet-up point at a conspicuous landmark, you can easily reunite. Landmarks to look for include oddly-shaped trees and rocks. Avoid things that may change like sand formations or even bodies of water that may rise or fall over time.
