    How to Translate with SDLX

    This document explains how youcan translate your files with SDLX

    Please make sure that you haveregistered your software beforetranslating files

    Please refer to the How to Registerdocument before commencing thistraining

    Before you start

    When you first start SDLX by selecting:

    Start -> Programs ->

    SDL International ->

    SDL Trados 2006 ->

    SDLX

    The SDLX Switchboard will be displayed as you will needto set up some options.

    To set your options:

    Select Tools. Select Options.

    In the General tabmake sure thatEnable SDLX itemson context menu isselected.

    If you de-select Alwaysstart with translation

    Wizard this will meanwhenever you start SDLX itwill always take you directlyto the SDLX switchboard.

    Select OK.

    Starting your translation

    Go to the folder wherethe file that you want to

    translate is located

    Right click on the fileand select Translatewith SDLX.

    clicking on the next to theSourcelanguage box.

    sentence isbroken downinto panes.These are called

    segments. SDLX will

    segment whereit thinks an end

    of sentenceoccurs.

    You will first need to set up some options to get the bestout of translating with SDLX.

    Select Tools

    Translating your file

    Once you have set your options up you can start yourtranslation

    Take your cursor over to the right hand pane and type inyour translation.

    When you are happy with the translation press the ENTERkey to confirm the translation has been done

    In this example thenext segment is

    exactly the same asthe first segment.

    SDLX thereforepropagated thetranslation to thenext segment.

    This is how SDLXdeals with repetitionin the same file.

    We call it AutoPropagation.

    Also note thatwhen Enter was

    pressed segment1 changed colourto blue whichmeans this is a

    confirmedsegment.

    Segment 2changed colour to

    orange whichmeans this is anauto propagatedsegment.

    Continue to translate the segments making sure you pressENTERto confirm that the translation is complete for each

    segment.

    Translating your file

    You may notice that some words in your file are highlightedin a colour.

    This is where there may be some formatting information.

    If you place your cursor over the word it should show you atooltip that describes what the format is.

    Sometimes when you are translating a segment thatcontains a format it disappears (due to structure of target

    language) from the source.

    You will notice that the segment is highlighted green on thesource side.

    This is SDLX saying that there is some formatting on thesource segment that needs to be placed on to the correcttranslation.

    Translating your file

    In order to place the format into the correct position you willneed to do something called Format Painting.

    To do this select the Format Paint brush icon seen at the topof your file.

    The cursor will change to a paint brush.

    Take the paint brush cursor onto the highlighted text thatneeds formatting.

    Alternatively you can press the right arrow icon that willtake you to the format that is needed.

    Take the format paint brush cursor over to the translationside and click with your mouse.

    Paste it across the word(s) that needs formatting.

    Release the mouse.

    You will notice the green from the left hand side disappear

    and the colour of the translated word(s) will be highlightedthe same as the source word(s).

    This procedure needs to be done for all formatting that isneeded in the file.

    Previewing your translation

    During your translation you may wish to see how the file isgoing to look once translated.

    You can do this by previewing the file.

    Click on the Eye icon to select Preview.

    You will get a message asking if you wish to save yourtranslation with the latest edits

    Select Yes

    If you wish you can seeuntranslated, fuzzy, 100%

    matched and translated text indifferent colours.

    Once you have chosen yourcolours, or select None if you

    do not want to see thetranslation in colours, selectOK.

    Creating a Translation Memory

    Once the translation and formatting has been completedyou can now create a Translation Memory.

    Select Translation Memory.

    Select New.

    Browse to where youwould like to save your

    Translation Memory. Give your Translation

    Memory a Name.

    Select Save.

    select New.

    Add your username.

    Select OK.

    You can now update your Translation Memory with theconfirmed segments.

    Select Translation Memory. Select Update.

    Note: Only the blue confirmed segments will go into theTranslation Memory.

    Once you have finished translating your file you can createyour translated file by selecting:

    File >Create Translation

    The Translation Previewscreen will appear.

    Make sure the colours underHighlight text are selectedas None.

    Select OK.

    A message stating the translation file was createdsuccessfully will appear and it will give you details as to

    where the translation is located. Select OK.

    same folder as thesource file.

    Using your Translation Memory onanother file

    You can use your Translation Memory onany other ITDs that you create.

    If you create an ITD file from another fileyou can apply the TM and if there are thesame or similar sentences in your new fileyou will not need to re-translate the

    whole sentence again.

    Remember you can right click on a file and select

    Translate with SDLX.

    Note: If you select No any confirmed (blue) matches wouldn o tbe overwritten with matches from the TranslationMemory

    The translation is correct but there is some formatting thatneeds to be done to complete the translation which is why ithas come up as a 99% fuzzy match

    Concordance Search

    A concordance search is a partial searchof a Translation Memory

    You can search for phrases or parts of asentence that may be in your TranslationMemory

    Your Translation Memory must be open in

    order for a concordance search to work
