Document PurposeTo show how to use APTARE StorageConsole/HBSM to generate reports usefulfor day-to-day administration.

Introduction

Under a global partnership agreement with APTARE, Hitachi Data Systems leveragesAPTARE StorageConsole within the Hitachi HiCommand Backup Services Manager

(HBSM) software suite. APTARE StorageConsole/HBSM is a tool used for reportingand trending on NetBackup, TSM, and other popular backup products.

This guide briefly discusses the reports accessible through APTARE StorageConsole/HBSM (see the Available Reports section) and how they may be used to gatherinformation. Although the full depth of the tool is not covered in this document, anumber of the more useful reports are discussed in the Report Details section.Note: Some of the reports/actions listed in this document may not be available to allusers.

Warning: Direct use of APTARE StorageConsole/HBSM will not damage the backup

application. However, using information gathered from the tool to make changes withinthe backup application GUIs, CLIs, or servers may cause harm. Changes should be madeonly with the approval of a Storage Engineer.

Accessing the Portal

Task Steps

Add Entries to

Hosts File

1. On Windows systems, open the hosts file by navigating to the followinglocation:

c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\orc:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\

2. Right-click the file named hosts, select Open With, and chooseNotepad; or double-click the file and select to open the file with Notepad.

3. Add the following entries to the hosts file directly under the line withlocalhost:

10.224.66.32 hbsmPortal.vericenter.com hbsmPortal #Aptare/HBSM Portal

10.224.66.32 hbsmAgent.vericenter.com hbsmAgent #Aptare/HBSM Agent

4. Save the hosts file and close it.

5. Open a browser and enterhttp://hbsmportal.vericenter.com

a. Enter the login credentials you were given to access the portal.

b. If you forget your password, contact a member of the Data Assuranceteam (during normal business hours only) to have it reset. If this is ashared account, contact another team member.

6. The Web page that appears after logon will look similar to the screenshotbelow. Reports are shown in the left-side pane, and the default Home pageis shown in the right-side pane.

ReviewNavigation Bar

7. Review the navigation bar of the Web page (shown below), which containsthe following items:

a. Home Takes you to the default Home page.

b. View Allows you to toggle Global Navigator (the reports in the left-side pane)and change the default Home page settings.

c. Tools > Search Allows you to search for servers and also allows some users toaccess theRestore WizardandManage Restore Jobs screens.

d. Tools > Agent Status Allows you to get a quick overview on status of all installedagents and data collectors.

e. Help Provides context-sensitive help.

f. Version Shows the current version of the portal.

g. User Shows the name of the user currently logged in.

h. Logout When clicked logs out the current user and loads the login page.

Run Reports 8. In the left-side pane, highlight the report you wish to run; then select theparameters for the report in the right-side pane. Note: Some reports may

combine NetBackup, TSM, and other backup application data. Use theAdvanced Tab to select specific options. Remember to change the SelectEvent Type drop down to Use Advanced Tab if any of these settings arechanged.

1. Job Status Summary Bar chart showing aggregate numbers ofsuccessful, warning, and failed backups and/or restores; you can drilldown into each section of the bar for more information.

2. Job Volume Summary Bar chart tracking total volume and number offiles backed up and/or restored for the period; you can drill down into thebars for more information.

3. Backup & Restore Duration Bar chart tracking total time spent doingbackups and restores; you can drill down into the bars for moreinformation.

4. Error Log Summary Spreadsheet displaying backups and restores thathave failed; you can drill down into some fields for more information.

a. Customers Lists servers by customer. This group is broken downby Customer Name and H6 number.

b. Masters Lists servers by the owning Master Server.

General Report Information

The reports all share some the same look and feel and require similar basic parameters that aredescribed below.

Report Output Format1. Reports that have a bar chart icon present information in

a bar chart format.

2. Reports that have a spreadsheet icon present informationin a spreadsheet.

3. Reports that have a combination icon presentinformation in various formats on the same page.

Using the Report DesignerClicking the report you want to view causes the ReportDesigner for that specific report to open in the right-side pane.Several options in the designer can be changed. The optionsvary for the different report designers, but all should be self-explanatory. Some of the options include:

1. Report Designer Tab

a. Time Period or Start Date Select the pre-defined timeperiods or choose your own.

b. Report Scope Choose to report by site, library, or client.

c. Event Type Filter report by backup type.

d. Event Status Filter report by final job status.

e. Customized name Popular reports can be named andsaved to be run in the future via a single click

2. Advanced Options Tabf. Time Zone Select specific time zone

g. Job Type Select specific parameters for each backupproduct

Using ReportsBelow are some tips to use after the report has been presented:

1. You can sort the page by clicking the column headings at thetop, but you can sort on only one column at a time.

2. Much of the time, cell contents can be clicked to openanother report to drill down for more information.

3. You can export some reports to a comma-delimited file by

clicking the Export Icon at the top left.

Tape Media Summary Report

This report provides detailed information about individual media, including status, volume pool, andgroup assignments, plus media expiration date.

Task Steps

Bring Up Report 1. Expand the Storage Utilization Reports folder and select Tape MediaSummary to bring up the Tape Media Summary Report Designer inthe right-side pane.

Change ReportScope

2. Under Select Report Scope, click the dropdown arrow to change thescope. In most cases,By Server Group will be the proper selection,requiring you then to select the Master Backup server. Choose thecorrect one for your environment.

Note: You may be shown only one option.

3. Leave Select Media Location and Select Media Status attheAll Media default.

4. Once the report parameters are set, clickView Reportto open thereport in a new window.

Using the Report 5. This report is useful for matching up unknown ejected tapes, etc.

First, find theMediaID. The Volume Poolcolumn tells you that themedia is scratch or else shows the name of the customer who ownsthe media. The Volume Group tells you whether the media isvaulted.

Note: Normally, an xxx_onsite designation means that thoseparticular tapes are ejected and are kept onsite to make room in thelibrary. Groups marked xxx_offsite are ones for which thecustomer pays offsite vaulting fees. Those tapes need to be sentoffsite for storage.
