How to Shop

Farmers’ markets are typically open seasonally (spring, summer and fall), although some oper-ate year-round. Participating farmers’ markets and operating hours may be found online atwww.okdhs.org/programsandservices/food/snap/docs/farmersmarkets.htm

When you go to a participating market, bring your Access Oklahoma EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card to the table with the sign that says “SNAP/EBT accepted here.” Then, swipe your card in the market’s portable EBT process-ing machine, and you will receive a specific amount of tokens, in the amount you request, to spend at stands at that market.

Be sure to bring a sturdy bag or basket to hold your purchases and wear comfortable shoes for walking as you browse the stands.

Bring a grocery list. You may find many items you normally purchase at a grocery store – and it keeps you focused on buying what you need.

Get there early for the best selection. Many vendors sell the same items, but may have different prices. Preview all the stands and tables before making your purchase.

Any unused tokens may be kept for the next time you shop at that market, or refunded back to your Access Oklahoma card. Tokens do not expire, however they are specific to each market and may not be transferred between markets.

Each season brings new and different foods at the farmers’ market. Many vendors offer samples for you to taste. It’s a great way to discover new flavors.

“Farmers’ markets do more than just help Americans feed their families healthy meals. They help America’s family farmers.” - Former First Lady Michelle Obama

Did you know that you can use your Access Oklahoma card to purchase fruits, vegetables and other food items at farmers’ markets? Locally grown produce arrives at the market more quickly and fresher than those transported long distances from other regions and countries.

What’s more, buying fresh, locally grown food is not only good for your family, it is also good for local farmers and our local economy. You can even meet the farmer who produced your food and get tips and recipes on how best to prepare their products.
