Over the course of these thirty years, we have served more than 12,000 campers, parents and sibling and helped to launch Adam’s Camps in other parts of the country. While we could not be more proud of this, the real joy and meaning of our work comes in the little moments. Moments such as when: • Zachary, an adventure camper with vestibular issues, rode the zip line all while being encouraged by peers and volunteers singing Happy Birthday to him! • Layna attended Early Start and moved from crawling to walking everywhere within one week. • Kylie, who as a sibling had been troubled by the way others viewed her sister, came to Adam’s Camp and finally felt that she and her sister belonged. • Sue, a nervous first time parent of an adventure camper, realized that by allowing her son the opportunity to go to camp, she had given him the experience of a lifetime. • The volunteer who recognized, “I love Adam’s Camp! It is such a wonderful place and has given me my place in life, absolutely.” And of course there was that moment in 1986, after 5-year-old Adam Horney and his mom, Karel, spent a week in the mountains working for hours each day with a physical therapist, when Adam took his first steps. We are thankful for so many moments throughout our first thirty years and we look ahead to many, many more. We truly are thirty, thankful and thriving! One of the ways we are celebrating this anniversary is with Thirty Stories for Thirty Years. We are collecting stories from the Adam’s Camp family, sharing them with you on the Adam’s Camp website and compiling them in a book. The book should be complete this summer and will be available to order at that time. Adam’s Camp wouldn’t be what it is today without the support of many over these thirty years. 2016 marks a major milestone, Adam’s Camp’s 30th anniversary! Thirty is a big number and thirty years is a long time. Over the course of these thirty years, we have served more than 12,000 campers, parents and sibling and helped to launch Adam’s Camps in other parts of the country. While we could not be more proud of this, the real joy and meaning of our work comes in the little moments. Moments such as when:

• Zachary, an adventure camper with vestibular issues, rode the zip line all while being encouraged by peers and volunteers singing Happy Birthday to him!

It is such a wonderful place and has given me my place in life, absolutely.”

And of course there was that moment in 1986, after 5-year-old Adam Horney and his mom, Karel, spent a week in the mountains working for hours each day with a physical therapist, when Adam took his first steps.

Please consider providing a donation of $30 in recognition of the 30th anniversary and help prepare us for the next thirty years. Visit adamscamp.org to contribute to our $30 for 30 Years Campaign.

The Winter Weekend session held in 2015 was so much fun that this year we expanded it to a full week. While it may have been just days shy of the start of spring, the winter weather didn’t disappoint. Snow Mountain Ranch received 32 inches of snow during the five days of camp! Thirty lucky campers skied, snow-shoed, rode in horse-drawn carriages, swam and warmed up in hot springs plus so many other fun things that they probably all came home ready for a long winter’s nap!

Winter Week Was A Snowy Success

Adventure Camp began in 1992 and has expanded over the years by adding weeks, groups and even adding weekend offerings twice a year. Adventure Camp has grown by 40 percent just since 2010.

Therapy Camps have grown by adding types of programs, adding teams to some sessions and adding more whole sessions where possible. Therapy Camps have grown by 34 percent just since 2010. And in 2016, we expect to serve 10 percent more families than just a year ago!

Adam’s Camp has the best volunteers and we could not run even a single week of a single program without them. From the campers who come to help us with office tasks to the graduate students helping our therapy teams, volunteers absolutely make our programs run. In 2015, volunteers provided over 22,000 hours to Adam’s Camp, an increase of more than 20 percent since just 2010. To learn more about volunteer opportunities or to apply, visit adamscamp.org/get-involved/.

In our 30th anniversary year, we are humbled by the continued demand for our programs. We would like nothing better than to serve all who would like to participate, but we will never add more campers without first ensuring that we can maintain or improve the quality of therapy, support, sibling activities, recreation and skill-building in all of our programs.

How We’ve Grown!

Rob McIntire joined the Adam’s Camp staff as our Finance Manager in the fall. Rob had spent many years in the financial sector before deciding that he wanted to find work that was more personally meaningful. Rob concluded that being part of a nonprofit team is the right fit. Rob is a father to three teens, coaches baseball and runs marathons.

Welcome AdditionsFrances Owens brings a wealth of experience to the Adam’s Camp board from her roles forming strategic partnerships and building community relations with the Galloway Group, Arc Thrift Stores and now the Anchor Center for Blind Children. Additionally, Frances’ commitment to Early Intervention, literacy, family support, and to serving those with disabilities is evident through her extensive volunteer accomplishments. Frances and her former husband have three children: Monica, Mark and Brett and one granddaughter.

who works with our friends at Partners in Pediatrics, joined the Hoops for Hope committee in 2015 and almost immediately stepped up to coordinate all volunteers for the event. In 2016 she did it again! Christine’s attention to detail, planning and terrific communication ensured that every aspect of the event had the volunteer support it needed. We couldn’t have done it without you, Christine.

first came to camp in 2010 and has come every year since. Kaitlin benefits from the intensive therapy but big sister Kylee loves Adam’s Camp just as much and has even written an essay about her experiences. Parents Kevin and Maureen take joy from seeing both daughters flourish and are so committed to Adam’s Camp that they’ve volunteered as well as spoken to guests at Adam’s Camp events. We’re so glad the Bennett family is part of the Adam’s Camp family.

joined the Adam’s Camp team as a music therapist right out of graduate school and quickly became a team lead demonstrating her incredible talents, commitment and professional approach. On top of that, Katherine spreads the word about what a great professional development opportunity working at Adam’s Camp is and has helped bring several other therapists into the Adam’s Camp family. You go, girl!

is Uncle Ken to Adam, yes the Adam, and brother to Adam’s Camp founder, Karel Horney. Ken has been a supporter of Adam’s Camp for many years and a monthly donor since 2002. Ken volunteers with literacy projects and other causes in California and truly understands giving back. Thank you, Ken, for your loyal and enduring support.

The new 10,000-square foot building under construction at Snow Mountain Ranch that is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016 promises so many great things for Adam’s Camp. A promise kept to see the vision of the project through. A promise of continuing Adam’s Camp’s partnership with the YMCA of the Rockies. A promise of a bright future for our camps and campers. When Adam’s Camp Founder Karel Horney proposed naming the building “Promise,” it made perfect sense.

Construction of the building is on schedule and on budget, despite all of the snow and weather that has impacted TDS Construction. The YMCA of the Rockies is overseeing the construction of the project and will manage and maintain Promise after it opens. Promise will give Adam’s Camp a full commercial kitchen to better serve our campers and staff, a large open multi-use area that will house improved therapy spaces, and desperately needed storage space. Between Promise, the existing Adam’s Camp Summit building, gathering space and playground, Adam’s Camp has created a campus setting that will be the home and heartbeat of our flagship summer programs.

Adam’s Camp and Partners in Pediatrics presented the fourth annual Hoops for Hope on Sunday, March 20th at the Gold Crown Field House. Hundreds came to enjoy seeing competitive basketball, silly fun, great music and the talents of some terrific Adam’s Camp campers. Prior to the big game, a cheer clinic was held by Peak Athletics with participants melting hearts as they performed for the crowd at halftime. A silent auction as well as games and activities open to all meant there was plenty to do as the teams warmed up for the main event. Following a beautiful rendition of the national anthem by former Adam’s Camper Bobby Swift, campers were joined on the court by Broncos ring-of-famer Tom Nalen, Miss Colorado USA, Caley-Rae Pavillard, former NBA coach and scout Big Bill Ficke, former Denver Nuggets Ervin Johnson, Bill Hanzlik and Mike Evans, former MLB pitcher Mark Knudson, sportscasters Aaron Matas and Jahmai Webster and physicians from Partners in Pediatrics, Adam’s Camp’s long-time partners in hosting this spring event. Denver sportscasting legend, Jeff Kingery came out of retirement to call the event and player Aaron Matas joined him from the bench providing commentary. Mascots Chip (CU) and Bernie (Colorado Avalanche) got in on the fun too. Hoops for Hope raised more than $50,000 for the children with special needs and families of Adam’s Camp.

Hoops for Hope 2016

The summer of 2016 will be especially exciting for Adam’s Camp Outreach as we take the huge step of opening our first international site with Adam’s Camp Northern Ireland. Adam’s Camp Outreach Director, Bob Horney, has been helping Adam’s Camp Northern Ireland Director, Grainne (pronounced “Gron-ya”) Ashe, for more than a year with all of the logistics of assembling a Board of Directors, filing legal documents and all of the other steps involved.

Grainne and her family originally travelled to participate in Adam’s Camp New Hampshire so her daughter Rose could benefit from the intensive therapy. Rose had such success, and the family became so enamored with “the Adam’s Camp way,” they immediately began working to bring Adam’s Camp to their hometown of Corrymeela in Ballycastle, Northern Ireland.

“It is incredible to see how the passion for what we do at Adam’s Camp can drive the people it impacts,” said Horney. “To think we’d ever open a site in Northern Ireland is beyond what we ever envisioned, but the Ashe family worked tirelessly to make it happen. We could not be more excited.”

The other Adam’s Camp Outreach sites, Alaska, Nantucket and New Hampshire, are already all at full capacity for 2016, and Adam’s Camp continues to explore adding more sites across the U.S.
