Description:
Westminster Abbey is one of the world's greatest churches, a designated World Heritage Site and one of London's principal visitor attractions.Until recently, Westminster Abbey managed their website without CMS functionality. All updates were done manually and could take up to a week to implement. The primary objective in the creation of a new CMS-managed site was to create an online presence that would be more accessible from both a user and back-end perspective and the secondary aim was to turn the website into a dynamic community platform. These aims were achieved using MySource Matrix CMS functionality, including an events calendar, social bookmarking buttons, foreign language sections, Twitter plugin, podcasts and RSS syndication. Since the new site launched, Westminster Abbey has seen a 30% rise in visits to its website. According to the Abbey web team, the increased functionality and ‘socialness' of the site has had a positive impact in encouraging repeat visitors as well as opening up a new dialogue with their world-wide audience. With the many possibilities of MySource Matrix and the ongoing support of Squiz, Westminster Abbey are continuing development of the site and plan to add additional functionality to the site in the future, such as a timed-ticketing booking service and live video broadcasting of certain special services.

Even though Westminster Abbey is over 1000 years old we knew that we needed to employ all aspects of 21st-century media techniques to sustain our profile at home and abroad. The revamp by our Online Editor Imogen Levy has been a huge success story. We’re now able to post news and pictures of major services very quickly after they have ended. We began using Twitter with an important royal service in March and such was the success of that venture that it is now an important part of our communications armoury. And the Abbey’s million-plus tourist visitors each year can now access all the information they need ahead of their visit.
