Howe Green is the industry’s access specialist, best known for design and manufacture of top quality access covers for floors, walls and ceilings, Howe Green products have been first choice for some of the biggest and most prestigious building projects around the world.

Substantial investment in state-of-the art equipment and highly skilled staff has enabled the company to offer customers non-standard sizes and specifications

alongside their core ranges. This is typically with no premium to pay or prohibitive time implications; something that has undoubtedly given the Hertfordshire based firm a competitive edge in today’s tough market. Howe Green has raised the bar in recent years though as architects, specifiers and contractors are increasingly challenging them to develop bespoke products and tailored specifications for projects under ever tighter budget and time pressures.

InnovatIon-to-order at Howe GreenDirector Richard Centa Explains Why New Product Development Is All In A Days Work

Page 3: Howe Green Project Book

“Every access panel we make is to the client’s exact specification and that has always been our policy” explains Richard Centa, Howe Green’s Sales and Marketing Director “But I think now more than ever we are being asked to modify specifications or develop completely bespoke products to solve problems. New product development is something the whole company is involved with. It’s a continual process led by the customer which is how it should be.”

Demand for the firms bespoke products and specialist services is diverse and spans all areas of Howe Green’s business which includes linear drainage and entrance matting as well as comprehensive access solutions.

Special stainless steel tree pit covers for London’s most expensive apartment block,

custom-made linear drainage systems for Blackfriars Station, 5m access cover runs for the Roman Baths attraction and bespoke covers with high voltage cable pits for London Underground are all among recent special projects.

“Our industry experience and manufacturing capabilities mean we can act quickly and without having to hike prices,” Richard concludes “We provide solutions proven to save time and money – often on site when the job is in its most crucial stages”.

It is true that innovation is at the heart of every successful company and it comes from knowledge, understanding and quick response to demand. For Howe Green, it seems this is all in a days work.

Howe Green Floor access Panels Prove a BIG HIt at custard Factory

Page 5: Howe Green Project Book

Built by Sir Alfred Bird, the inventor of instant custard, around a century ago to manufacture his famous dessert, the Custard Factory has been revamped as an arts and media quarter for Birmingham. To provide high quality access to essential building services in the development’s entrance atrium, 5000 Series floor access panels from Howe Green were selected for their outstanding reputation.

A 600 yard walk from Birmingham’s famous Bullring shopping centre, the Custard Factory is yet another exciting addition to the city’s centre. The brief for this collection of early 20th-century industrial and office premises, spanning five acres, was to convert the buildings into affordable, attractive workspaces and to create an environment in which small creative companies could interact and support each other.

Key to this was the emphasis on public open space and interesting common areas, central to which was the courtyard and lake, flanked by cafés and shops and overlooked by many of the studios.

Designed by Glenn Howells Architects, the impressive redevelopment of the Custard Factory was delivered by main contractor Vinci. Specialist subcontractors DSM Flooring completed the various flooring requirements throughout the project, including the installation of the Howe Green access panels necessary to provide access to essential building services located under the floor of the building.

The Howe Green access panels were specified for the company’s widely held reputation as the leading supplier and producer of floor, ceiling and wall access

covers. As it was expected that the flooring would be subject to quite heavy foot traffic, as well as the frequent passage of trolleys, the access panels needed to be durable and reliable and it was decided that five of Howe Green’s 5000 Series aluminium panels would meet the requirements.

In keeping with the high aesthetic standards of the Custard Factory, DSM Flooring inlaid tiles within the covers, matching the existing white porcelain tiles of the floor for an uninterrupted and seamless finish. Laid into the substrate flush with floor level, the panels provide excellent access to building services whilst not presenting a trip hazard. Tamper resistant features provide additional security, whilst double sealing at the edges makes for perfect hygiene.

All of Howe Green’s access panels are built to order at no extra time or cost to the client. Corrosion resistant thanks to their aluminium build, 5000 Series panels are available in a standard depth of 50mm. With inset lifting points, they are easily raised for access to building services with the use of supplied keys.

By using the company’s 5000 Series panels on the Custard Factory, the stylish precinct has ensured impeccable aesthetics and long lasting access to its vital building services.

Howe Green’s 5000 and 7500 Series aluminium access covers have been installed in both the North and South Terminal buildings of the first urban cable car in the UK.

Terrazzo flooring contractor TRI, chose Howe Green’s aluminium covers to provide easy, reliable and durable access to essential under-floor services for The Emirates Air Line; Transport for London’s gondola link across the River Thames from the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Docks.

Howe Green is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of fabricated metal access covers and their quality products are made to order at no additional time or financial cost.

The 5000 and 7500 Series aluminium panels are tamper resistant and double-sealed for safety and hygiene and sit flush with the floor to prevent slips and trips. They are also exceptionally hardy, making them ideal for the high levels of traffic expected to use the link, which connects two important Olympic sites.

Howe Green also designed and fabricated a bespoke decorative trim for the project. An aluminium bar with special anchors was made featuring a semi-circular section with a 10-metre radius and a 6mm visible edge.

The company’s technical team worked closely with client TRI and added anchors on one side only to accommodate a 20mm Strata Granazzo floor tile - making tiling up to it much quicker and easier on site.

“We’ve worked with Howe Green for over 20 years” commented Simon Petrou, TRI’s Commercial Director “That says an awful lot about the company and the excellent standard of manufacture, service and support we get from them. The Emirates Air Line is a very prestigious project for us. It’s a job with tight time and budget pressures though, as

every project is these days. Having Howe Green’s full support and knowing that they will pull out all the stops should we need them to gives us greater flexibility and peace of mind”.

Howe Green ProvIdes a sweet access solutIon at M&M’s worldThe confectionery mega-store M&M’s World arrived in Leicester Square this summer. It is big enough to house more than 100 double-decker buses and spans 35,000 square feet over four floors.

Reported to offer shoppers a ‘retail-tainment’ experience, features include giant statues of the M&M’s characters, interactive screens

inside a 1960’s London Bus and a multi-coloured wall of chocolate. Meopham based firm AEM Demolition undertook the heavyside building works for the US high-end retail construction specialist and main contractor McKenzie Keck. AEM needed reliable, durable and easy access to the building’s under-floor services and they chose 5000 Series floor access panels from

Howe Green, the industry’s leading supplier of quality access solutions. The Howe Green stainless steel panels were installed in a range of different internal areas as well as with a wide variety of different types of flooring, including bright red resin in the public and retail areas, painted concrete in service corridors and carpet in office spaces.

“We were really very pleased with Howe Green’s access covers” said Peter Rumsey, AEM’s Building Projects Manager “They were very good quality and extremely well made. Fitting them was quick and easy and we found they went in perfectly flush with all the different floors on site.”

Howe Green covers have been specified in some of the most prestigious and demanding retail construction projects across the world. They are designed and built to withstand the pressures of high volume pedestrian traffic and they hold up to a 1 hour fire rating in line with BS 476: Part 20 1987.

Being made of stainless steel, they are also resistant to rust and corrosion and are double sealed to ensure that no dirt or grease can penetrate them which can help reduce maintenance costs and keep the building functioning as it should.

Howe Green access covers on Board tHe cutty sark ProjectHowe Green access panels have been installed in the newly re-opened Cutty Sark visitor attraction. The world’s last surviving tea clipper was officially re-opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 25th April at its home in the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, having undergone extensive works that required almost every inch of the 143-year old vessel to be conserved.

Over fifty 7500 Series aluminium access covers with bespoke Z-section supports were made to order by Howe Green, the industry’s leading manufacturer of metal floor, ceiling and wall access covers. Ellmer

Construction installed single and multipart units under a unique glass canopy designed to allow people to walk underneath Cutty Sark itself and view the elegant lines of her hull.

The space and opportunity for the construction arose following an incredible feat of engineering, which saw Cutty Sark raised by 11 feet onto steel supports in order to relieve the keel of the weight of the ship and help preserve her unique shape. Howe Green’s 7500 Series aluminium access panels were fitted into raised access flooring within the new museum facility in order to

Page 11: Howe Green Project Book

provide a route to essential ventilation ducting needed to keep air circulating in what is effectively a large void under the historic clipper.

Designed for use with all types of hard floors, Howe Green 7500 Series aluminium panels sit 100% flush so as not create a trip hazard and offer proven reliability to withstand high levels of foot traffic. They are double sealed to ensure no water ingress or dirt trapping and provide a reliable and maintenance-free solution to accessing essential building services - ideal for what looks set to become one of the Capital’s most popular tourist attractions.

Each access panel from Howe Green is manufactured to client’s exact specifications. Thanks to modern manufacturing techniques and the company’s innovative approach to product design, the bespoke nature of the panels does not come with a price associated with bespoke manufacturing. Instead Howe Green is able to offer competitively priced panels, designed for exact purposes.
