    How To Play

    National Anthems

    Introduction

With the huge diversity of music around the world, it's a little disappointing that all national

anthems sound more or less the same. There's no mariachi tinge to the Meican national anthem, or

mentoflavour in the !amaican national anthem.

    "ut it's a tough #o$ $eing a national anthem. %ou have to $e memora$le, instantly recognisa$le and

simple enough that even the most tone deaf can have a sta$ at singing it. &o once the winning

formula was discovered, it's no wonder people stic to it.

Playing these songs on the uulele has a little etra edge to it. These tunes were meant to $e played

    $y a huge $attalion of $rass with $ooming percussion and possi$ly a cannon or two. Transferring

them to a small, four(stringed instrument gives them a whole new dimension. The hum$le uulele

su$verts the pomposity and $om$ast of national anthems and $rings out their natural $eauty and

simplicity in a way you rarely get to hear.

    Playing Notes

All the tunes in this $oo are played fingerpicing style rather than strumming. )'ve arranged these

in the simplest way possi$le to mae them accessi$le to people who are #ust starting to play in this

way *)'d advise new$ies to start with +od efend New -ealand. /ven so, there are some tricy

sections in them that'll tae a $it of practice for $eginners.

0ie chord fingering, each person will have their own preferences when it comes to right hand

picing. "ut there are some $asics that it's worth following. The default position for the right hand

is one finger per string *thum$ on the + string, inde finger on the 1 string, middle finger on the /

string and ring finger on the A string.

However, if you're anything lie me, you'll have a preference for using your inde and middle

fingers. &o feel free to change your fingering for individual note runs. Particularly when there is a

2uic succession of notes on a single string. )n this situation, it's usually $est to pluc the string

alternating $etween inde and middle fingers *so you mae a ind of running(man action with your

    fingers.

These arrangements contain many three and four note chords. These are arranged so that you can

'roll' through the strings and hit the melody note last *which gives it that little etra emphasis.

These are performed $y first picing the 1 string with your thum$, then the + string with the inde

finger very soon after and so on. )f you do this swiftly enough, it sounds #ust lie a strum. %ou could

#ust strum these, $ut it's much easier to eep you fingers in the picing position rather than try to

    switch $etween strumming and picing.

)n a num$er of the ta$s, you'll see notes that are surrounded $y $racets. These are 'ghost notes'.

They're there to eep the tune moving rather than as part of the melody. These should generally $e

played more gently than the melody notes to eep them in the $acground.

)f you need a refresher on how to read ta$, you can find a full guide here.

    Australia: Advance Australia Fair

Having spent the ma#ority of 4567 dedicated to

Transformers rather than international politics, )'d

entirely missed the fact that Australians voted for

Advance Australia Fairas their national anthem *they

had previously used the 89's anthem God Save the

Queen. )f )'d had a vote, ) would have gone forWaltzing Matilda, particularly if they'd have allowed

the Tom Traubert Blues version $y Tom Waits. And

how could you turn down the chance to have a

national anthem written $y a guy named "an#o:

Having said that, it's still a good tune. ) do have one small gripe withAdvance Australia Fair, the

    Canada: Oh Canada

O Canadais another anthem that came into $eing when the colonials wanted to get rid of God Save

the Queen. This time $y political fiat rather than popular vote.

)t's 2uite #a@@y for a national anthem. There are a couple of unusual chords in there such as the A

    diminished in $ar 47. )n $ar = there's a +B$= that's particularly difficult to play. )f you can't

manage the full stretch, miss out the + on the + string.

There's also a $it of chord su$stitution going on, another #a@@ tric. %ou'd usually epect to find m

and Am in a song that's in the ey of C. "ut here they've $een su$stituted with and AB. )t's the sortof move you're much more liely to find in uulele songs such as Want to Marr! a "ighthouse

    #ee$erand country $lues songs such as The!%re &ed 'ot.

    There's 2uite a $it #ump in the chords in $ar 44. )f you prefer, you could #ust play the melody line

    France: La Marseillaise

"a Marseillaiseis pro$a$ly my favourite national anthem. ) love the

opening few $ars of this tune. )t manages to strie the right $alance

$etween pomposity, which all national anthems have to have, andtunefulness. )t then, very unusually, switches from 1 ma#or to 1

minor in the middle section *$ars 4D to 45 and gets all +allic and

moody. ) thin the contrast $etween the two wors very well.

    )n $ar ?= there's a great move from 1 to 1B. )'ve never considered

playing 1B lie that $efore *EEDB $ut having that / note at the top

    gives it an interesting flavour.

    Germany: Deutschlandlied

Also nown as *eutschland, *eutschland +ber

Alles to non(+ermans despite those words no

longer $eing in the song. The first verse of thesong was used heavily $y the Na@i party and

    *eutschlandliedwas $anned for a time in $oth

sides of +ermany after the &econd World War.

When the song again $ecame the national anthem,

    the first verse was re#ected.

The second verse also had to $e discarded thans

to lyrics lie, ;+erman women, +erman loyalty F

    +erman wine and +erman song F &hall retain in

the world.; Apparently, '+ermany> 1ome for the $oo@e, stay for the chics' wasn't the sort of image

    they wanted to pro#ect.

With most national anthems, if )'m ased to hum the tune ) tend lose trac as they go along. Most of

them start strongly $ut seem to fade a little. The +erman national anthem, written $y !oseph Haydn,

really starts to get into its stride around $ar 4G when it hits the higher register. Mae sure you really

give it some in this section as the ue tends to sound weaer higher up the fret$oard.

    "ussia: #he $ymn o! the "ussian Federation

    The'!mn o the &ussian Federationis another national

When Putin came to power in ?EEE, he resurrected the

The ideological $acground of the song has meant it has $een sung $y non(natives more often than

)'m sure ) can't tell the Americans amongst you anything you

don't now a$out Star S$angled Banner. As an ignorant

foreigner, ) was surprised to learn that this didn't $ecome the 8&

national anthem until 45G4. That's 44B years after the lyrics were

    written.

Star S$angled Bannerstarts off with a run of notes that are all in the 1 chord. )f you play these

notes and let them ring into each other, you can $uild up the single notes into a full chord.

Star S$angled Banneris already a $it of a uulele standard thans to !ae &hima$uuro's version.

The version )'ve written up is much simpler. "ut you can get closer to !ae's version #ust $y adding

    a few simple harmonies.

Cor eample, you could play $ars three and four lie this>
