Blinking lights

The lights on the front of the HP product can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. The lights

indicate product status and are useful for diagnosing printing problems.

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking lights, followed by solutions for each combination.

Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Issue: The Power light blinks

In this normal condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light : Blinking

Print Cartridge status lights : Off

PictBridge lights : Off

Resume light : Off

Cause

The product is preparing to print. The Power light blinks while the product receives the data.

Solution

No action is necessary. Wait for the product to finish processing the print job.

Issue: The Resume light blinks

In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light : On

Print Cartridge status lights : Off

PictBridge lights : Off

Resume light : Blinking

Cause

The product is out of paper, or paper is jammed in the product.

How do I resolve this issue? The following sections describe the most common messages that might display on the

computer in combination with a blinking Resume light. To resolve the issue , find the message that displays on your computer

(from the following choices), and then expand that section for solutions.

A ' Printer is out of paper ' message displays on the computer

The Resume light blinks and a 'Printer is out of paper ' message displays on the computer.

Cause : The product is out of paper, or the paper is not feeding correctly.

Solutions

Follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. If paper is already loaded in the product , skip to Solution

two to reset the product.

Solution one: Load paper

Follow these steps to load paper in the product.

Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.

Insert a stack of paper into the paper tray with the print side down, and then slide the paper width guide inward so that itrests against the edge of the paper.

Lower the output tray.4.

Pull out the tray extender on the output tray.

5.

Press the Resume button ( ) to continue printing.6.

If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Perform a reset

Follow these steps to reset the product.

Step one: Reset the printer

Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.1.With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.2.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.3.Wait at least 15 seconds.4.

Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.5.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.6.

If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.7.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.1.

Press and hold the Power button ( ).2.

While holding the Power button, press the Resume button ( ) four times.3.

Release the Power button ( ). The self-test report prints.4.

Solution three: Check the condition of the paper, and then reload it

Paper feed issues might result from dusty, torn, wrinkled, wet, or folded paper in the tray. The quality of the paper can alsomake a difference. Use only good quality paper that meets product specifications. Follow these steps to check the condition of

the paper and then reload the paper.

Step one: Check the condition of the paper

Remove the stack of paper from the tray.1.

Check for obstructions inside the tray. Use a flashlight to view the mechanism inside the tray to make sure that nothingblocks the paper from engaging with the rollers. Even small pieces of paper can cause paper feed issues.

NOTE: If you find obstructions in the paper path, skip to the section on cleaning the rollers.

2.

Examine the condition of the paper, and then replace any ripped, dusty, curled, wrinkled, or bent paper.3.Make sure that all the paper in the stack is the same size and type. Never load mixed types of paper in the tray. The

product can only process one type of paper at a time.

4.

Tap the stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges.5.

Make sure that the stack of paper contains no fewer than 10 sheets and no more than 25 sheets of paper.

NOTE: You need to use 10 to 25 sheets of paper only for purposes of these troubleshooting steps. When the issue is

resolved, you can resume loading paper according to the paper tray capacity specifications for your product.

Step two: Reload the paper

Solution four: Adjust the paper settings in the print driver

The paper type and size settings in the print driver must match what is loaded in the product. Follow these steps to adjust thepaper settings in the print driver.

NOTE: These changes do not change the default print settings. The print settings return to default the next time the program

opens.

Open the document that you were trying to print when the issue occurred.1.Click File , and then click Print . The Print dialog box displays.2.

In the Print dialog box, click Properties or Preferences . The Printer Properties dialog box displays.3.

Click the tab that provides paper type and size settings. The tab might be Features or Paper/Quality .4.

From the Size is drop-down list, select the paper size that matches the paper in the tray.5.

Open the document that you were trying to print when the issue occurred.1.Click File , and then click Print . The Print dialog box displays.2.

In the Print dialog box, click Properties or Preferences . The Printer Properties dialog box displays.3.

Click the tab that provides paper type and size settings. The tab might be Features or Paper/Quality .4.

From the Size is drop-down list, select the paper size that matches the paper in the tray.5.

From the Type is drop-down list, select the paper type that matches the paper in the tray.6.

Click OK , and then click OK again to print the document.7.

If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Clean the paper pick roller

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper pick roller and cause paper feed issues. Follow these stepsto clean the paper pick roller.

Gather the following materials:

Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the product)A clean, lint-free cotton swab

Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.2.Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.3.

Remove the rear access door. Press the handle to the right, and then pull out the door to remove it.

Locate the paper pick roller.

5.

Lightly dampen a cotton swab moistened with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from theswab.

6.

Press the swab against the paper pick roller, and then rotate the roller upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate

amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

NOTE: Make sure to clean the paper pick roller thoroughly. If this roller is not clean, more paper feed issues are likely to

occur.

7.

Allow the rollers to dry for 10 to 15 minutes.8.

Reattach the rear access door. Carefully insert the right side of the door into the rear of the product, and then push thedoor forward until it snaps into place.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.10.

Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.11.

Try printing again.12.

A ' Paper jam ' message displays on the computer

The Resume light blinks and a 'Paper jam ' message displays on the computer.

Cause : There is paper jammed in the product.

Solutions

IMPORTANT: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Turn the printer off and on again

Follow these steps to turn the product off and then on again.

Step one: Turn the printer off and on again

Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product. If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.1.

Wait 60 seconds.2.

Press the Power button ( ) to turn the product on.

NOTE: The product might go through a warm-up period which might last up to two minutes. Wait until the warm-up period

completes before you continue.

3.

Step two: Print a self-test report

Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.1.

Press and hold the Power button ( ).2.

While holding the Power button, press the Resume button ( ) four times.3.

Release the Power button ( ). The self-test report prints.4.

If these steps resolved the issue , and the test page prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.

If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.

If the test page does not print , continue with the next solution.

Solution two: Clear the paper jam

Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper from the product. Always clear jammed paper from the back of the product first,and then from the front.

Step one: Remove any loose paper from the tray

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

CAUTION: Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can

damage the print mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the printer

Follow these steps to clear a paper jam from the rear of the product.

Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.1.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.2.Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.3.

Remove the rear access door. Press the handle to the right, and then pull out the door to remove it.

Gently pull out any jammed paper from the rear of the product.

CAUTION: If the paper tears when removing it from the rollers, check the rollers for torn pieces of paper that

might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely

to occur.

5.

Reattach the rear access door. Carefully insert the right side of the door into the rear of the product, and then push thedoor forward until it snaps into place.

Step three: Clear the jam from the front of the printer

Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper from the front of the product.

Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the rear of the product. If the power cord is not disconnected,disconnect it now.

Gently pull out any jammed paper from inside the product.

CAUTION: Remove the jammed paper carefully. Removing jammed paper incorrectly can damage the printing

mechanism.

3.

Close the cover on the product.

4.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.5.

Press the Power button ( ) to turn the product on.6.

Step four: Make sure that the carriage moves freely

Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage moves freely in the product.

With the product turned on, open the cover on the product. The carriage might move to the far right of the product. Allowit to move to that position.

With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

WARNING: You must unplug the power cord to move the carriage by hand to avoid the risk of electrical shock.

Check for any paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage, and then remove any paper or objects that you find.3.

Reach inside the product, and then manually move the carriage.

If the carriage is stuck on the right side , move the carriage to the left side of the product.

If the carriage is stuck on the left side , move the carriage to the right side of the product.

If the carriage is stuck in the middle , move the carriage to the right.

4.

Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left,

and then to the right.

6.

Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.7.

Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.8.

Solution three: Clean the paper rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues.Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.

Step one: Clean the rollers

Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.

Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.1.Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.2.

Remove the rear access door. Press the handle to the right, and then pull out the door to remove it.

Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

CAUTION: Tap water might damage the product.

4.

Press the cloth against the rollers and rotate them upward with your fingers to clean them all the way around. Apply a

moderate amount of pressure to remove dust or dirt buildup.Figure 24: Clean the paper rollers

5.

Allow the rollers to dry for 10 or 15 minutes.6.Reattach the rear access door. Carefully insert the right side of the door into the rear of the product, and then push the

door forward until it snaps into place.Figure 25: Reattach the rear access door

7.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.8.

Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.9.

Solution four: Reset the printer

Sometimes a paper jam error persists even though there is no jammed paper (false paper jam). Follow these steps to perform

a power reset, which will clear a false paper jam error.

Step one: Perform a power reset

Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.1.With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.2.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.3.

Issue: The Power light and the Resume light blink

In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:

Power light : Blinking

Print Cartridge status lights : Off

PictBridge lights : Off

Resume light : Blinking

NOTE: A 'Carriage is stalled ' message might display on the computer in combination with a blinking Power light and

Resume light.

Cause

The carriage is jammed or stalled.

Solutions

IMPORTANT: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Turn the printer off and then on again

Follow these steps to turn the product off and back on again.

Step one: Turn the printer off and on again

Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product. If the product does not turn off, proceed to the next solution.1.Wait 15 seconds.2.

Press the Power button ( ) to turn the product on.

NOTE: The product might go through a warm-up period which might last up to two minutes. The product lights might flash

and the carriage might move. Wait until the warm-up period completes before you continue.

Step two: Print a self-test page

Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.

Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.1.

Press and hold the Power button ( ).2.

Solution two: Clear any jammed paper

Jammed paper can cause the carriage to stall. Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper.

Solution two: Clear any jammed paper

Jammed paper can cause the carriage to stall. Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper.

Step one: Remove any loose paper from the tray

Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

CAUTION: Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can

damage the print mechanism.

Step two: Clear the jam from the rear of the printer

Press the Power button ( ) to turn off the product.1.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.2.

Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.3.Remove the rear access door. Press the handle to the right, and then pull out the door to remove it.

Gently pull out any jammed paper from the rear of the product. If printing labels, make sure that a label did not detachfrom the label sheet while passing through the printer.

NOTE: If the paper tears while removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might

remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur.

5.

Reattach the rear access door. Carefully insert the right side of the door into the rear of the product, and then push the

6.

Step three: Clear the jam from the front of the printer

Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the rear of the product. If the power cord is not disconnected,

disconnect it now.

Gently pull any jammed paper out of the rollers.

Open the cover on the product. The carriage might move to the far right side of the product. Allow it to move to thatposition.

With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

WARNING: You must disconnect the power cord to move the carriage by hand and reset the paper feed

mechanism without the risk of electrical shock.

3.

NOTE: If the paper tears when you remove it, check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If pieces

of paper remain in the product, more paper jams might occur.

Reach inside the product, and then manually move the carriage.

If the carriage is stuck on the right side , move the carriage to the left side of the product.

If the carriage is stuck on the left side , move the carriage to the right side of the product.

If the carriage is stuck in the middle , move the carriage to the right.

Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left,

and then to the right.

Solution four: Remove and reinsert the cartridges

Improper placement of the cartridges can cause the product to indicate a carriage jam error. Follow these steps to remove,

inspect, and then reinsert the cartridges.

Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product, if it is not already turned on.1.Open the cover on the product. The carriage moves to the right side of the product. Wait until the product is idle and

NOTE: If you have installed a refilled or remanufactured cartridge, or a cartridge that has been used in another product, the

ink-level indicator will be inaccurate or unavailable.

Follow these steps to check the estimated ink levels in HP Solution Center.

Make sure that the product is on and connected to the computer.1.

In the software program, click File , click Print , and then click Properties .1.

Click the Services tab, and then click the Service This Device icon ( ).

Follow these steps to clean the cartridge contacts.

Gather the following materials:

Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water can contain

contaminants that damage the cartridge.

Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).Sheets of paper or a paper towel to rest the cartridges on during cleaning.

Open the cover on the product. The carriage moves to the right side of the product. Wait until the product is idle andsilent before continuing.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

WARNING: You must disconnect the power cord before cleaning the electrical contacts inside the product to avoid

electrical shock.

CAUTION: Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Remove and clean each cartridge one at a time. Do

not leave a cartridge outside the product for more than 30 minutes.

4.

Dip a swab in the clean water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly

damp.

5.

Use the damp swab to clean the contacts on the cartridge, and then allow the cartridge to dry for approximately 10

minutes.

CAUTION: Do not clean the nozzles on the cartridge.

Lightly moisten another swab with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from the swab.7.Use the swab to clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the product. Allow the contacts to dry for

approximately 10 minutes, or use a new swab to dry the contacts.

Slide the cartridge back into its slot, and then press firmly on the cartridge until is snaps into place.
