The steps and procedures included in this document are generic in nature, intended to cover a wide variety of installation/upgrade situations. Installation personnel should use their own judgement in following the steps for each process. Some steps may not be required.

This section provides the procedures for installing the rp2400 to rp2470 (650 or 750 MHz) Upgrade Kit for the rp24xx system. The HP Server rp24xx product set is identified as follows:

Tools required:

• #1 philips screwdriver

• T10 screwdriver

• T15 screwdriver

The rp2400 to rp2470 Upgrade Kit contains:

• One A6889-67101 Upgrade Kit System Board (550, 650, or 750 Mhz capable). GSP is pre-installed.

• One A6889-62002 Terminator Assembly

• One A6144-63001 Cable - M

• One 0950-3821 DC/DC Converter - Master

• One 0950-3822 DC/DC Converter - Slave

• Two A6889-67004 Disc Media Backplane modules

• One or two processor modules:

A6889-67101 System Board Upgrade ProcedureThe following subsections provide the steps required to remove and replace the System Board.

System Board Removal

The System Board is the most time consuming component to remove and replace because all internal components in the server connect to it. Allow enough space, ESD pads, and time to perform the removal task.

CAUTION Make sure that the system, including the operating system, applications, and data base has been backed up prior to removing the System Board.

Removing Attached Components

Be sure to have an ESD compliant work surface and several ESD bags for the System Board and CPUs. If an ESD bag is not available, use an ESD pad.

Before beginning System Board removal, login to the GSP and document the GSP settings. Then perform the following tasks:

NOTE Removal of a component also includes disconnecting any cables attached to the component.

1. Power down the server and disconnect all power cords.

2. Remove the cover.

3. If needed, remove the card in slot 1 of the PCI I/O cardcage, then remove the PCI I/O Cardcage. Removal is illustrated on the PCI I/O cardcage cover.

4. Remove Power Supply cover.

5. Remove the Power Supply.

6. Remove all Memory DIMMs.

NOTE Note the order of DIMM installation prior to removal to ensure that DIMMs are replaced in the correct order.

7. Remove all CPUs (up to two). If necessary, refer to the Processor Module Upgrade procedure later in this document. Label the CPUs with proper information and package for return.

8. Disconnect the internal disk(s) from the Disc Media Backplane module(s).

9. Remove Disc Media Backplane modules (up to two).

Removing the System Board

To remove the System Board, perform the following steps:

1. Unplug and remove any remaining cables and connectors from the System Board.

2. Remove the two T-10 screws that secure the System Board to the Chassis.

3. From the front of the server, slide the System Board forward so that the retainer posts are positioned into the keyholes.

4. The board is now free and may be lifted out of the chassis.

5. Label the System Board with proper information and package for return.

NOTE The System Board is large, use caution when lifting it out of the server chassis.

The following picture shows a System Board with all components installed.

Installing the new System Board

Ensure that all components and cables are properly reconnected to the system board once it is installed. Once the system board is installed and operation has been verified, follow the procedures to ensure that the system software ID is reset.

NOTE The System Board is large, use caution when lifting and placing it into the server chassis.

NOTE Do not touch the Astro or use it to lift the System Board.

To replace the System Board, proceed as follows:

Step 1. From the front of the server, carefully insert the System Board into the chassis. When all posts are in place, push the board back to slide the slots under the standoff post rims that seat the board.

Step 2. Set DIP switches based on the CPU speed, as follows:

NOTE The DIP switch is located near the rear of the System Board, next to the GSP. The figure below displays the dipswitch and it’s exact location.

Step 3. Replace the two T-10 screws that secure the System Board to the Chassis.

Step 4. Reconnect all cables and connectors and remove the cardboard strip from the battery on the System Board.

Replacing Attached Components

The procedure to replace the System Board also includes reinstallation of the following:

Step 1. Install the new Disc Media Backplane modules (up to two).

Step 2. Install the DC-DC Converter Master and Slave boards (one set for each CPU installed). The converter boards are keyed and clearly labeled to avoid confusion.

Step 3. Replace all Memory DIMMs.

NOTE Replace Memory DIMMs in the order removed.

Step 4. Install all CPUs (up to two). If necessary, refer to the CPU Replacement procedure later in this document.

Step 5. Install Terminator Assembly (for single CPU systems only).

Step 6. Replace Power Supply

Step 7. Replace Power Supply cover

Step 8. Replace the PCI I/O Cardcage with PCI cards installed.

Step 9. Replace I/O card in slot #1 (if used).

Step 10. Install the A6144-63001 M-cable.

NOTE Replacement of a component also includes reconnecting all cables and connectors attached to the component.

Step 11. Reconnect all power cords to the System Backplane.

Step 12. Replace the cover.

Step 13. Power up the server.

Step 14. Reconfigure GSP LAN interface using the information that was documented in the System Board Removal procedures.

Step 15. Remove and discard pullout information card.

Step 16. Install new pullout information card by inserting non-keyed end into the access slot in the pullout channel.

Step 17. Apply new labels to the chassis.

Resetting the Software ID Ensure that a console is connected and operating in order to reset the software ID.

Software ID must be reset each time the system board is replaced. The Software ID (SWID) is computed from the original product number and the system serial number. The SWID must be reset when a new system board is installed in the server. If the SWID is not reset or correct, the following chassis code will be displayed:

CPU Removal

There are two CPU sockets in each rp2470 server. Removal procedures are described in the following paragraphs.

CAUTION Ensure that the system is shut down and power removed from the server before attempting removal or replacement of a component.

To remove a CPU from the server, perform the following steps:

Step 1. Carefully vacuum the area surrounding the CPU to be removed.

Step 2. Loosen the four captive T-15 mounting screws that hold the CPU in place.

NOTE Loosen the four CPU mounting screws a little at a time, in a cross pattern (1, 3, 2, 4) until they are all loose. The mounting screws will not back out of the CPU assembly.

Step 3. Grasp the top of the CPU assembly and carefully lift it out of the server.

Place the CPU on a clean surface. If the CPU is going to be out of the server for any length of time, place a dust cover in the CPU socket on the system board to protect against particle contamination.

NOTE The rp2400 system supports one CPU; the rp2470 supports two CPUs.

Installing the CPU

Install CPUs according to the procedure listed below:

Step 1. Carefully align the CPU notches with the socket notches and set the CPU in place.

Step 2. Tighten the four captive T-15 mounting screws that hold the CPU in place.

NOTE Tighten the four CPU mounting screws a little at a time, in a cross pattern (1, 3, 2, 4), until they are all tight.

The following picture shows both CPUs installed in a server.

GSP Removal

The GSP card resides on the System Board at the rear left center, under the short PCI I/O card (slot 1), which must be removed for access.

Before removing the GSP from the server, perform the following steps:

GSP Replacement

Step 1. Grasp the card by the left and right edges and press it gently into its socket on the System Board.

Step 2. Insert and tighten the four mounting screws that hold the GSP card in place.

Guardian Service Processor Firmware UpdateThis section details the procedures to update the Guardian Service Processor (GSP) firmware. Before starting the update procedures, there are some pre-update activities to check or perform.

• The update files exist on an FTP server accessible to the GSP LAN.

• The GSP LAN has been configured (using the LC command).

• The GSP internal port is configured (refer to Accessing GSP Internal Port for procedures).

An update file set consists of three files (APPLICATION.ROM, BOOTSTRAP.ROM, and upgrade.cnf).

To update the firmware on the GSP, perform the following steps:

1. Access the GSP by using the ctrl+b command from the local console keyboard, through the local port, or from an HP-UX server (through GSP internal port), use the cu command.

2. At the GSP prompt (GSP>) type he, to display the help menu, as shown:

3. Select the GSP command XU. This command activates the upgrade mode.

NOTE If returned to the GSP prompt (GSP>) instead of the reset message, the update was not successful. This may be caused by incorrect information, or the LAN was not configured properly. Check the LAN parameters (using the LS command) and try again.

4. Use ctrl+b to re-login to GSP (or the cu command from the internal port).

5. Re-enter the GSP he command to verify that the firmware revision number has changed to the updated version.

NOTE If updating from the GSP internal port, following the last message above, exit the cu command and re-issue the cu command in order to continue using the GSP from the internal port.

Once the GSP has reset, reconnect all sessions that were aborted.
