SafetyElectronic componentsTheHRUECO4containspartswhichmaybelive.Consult a professionally qualified installer in theevent of an alleged fault. All repairs and mainte-nanceworkshouldbecarriedoutbyaprofessionallyqualifiedinstaller.

MaintenanceTheventilationunitshouldbeinspectedregularlyforcontamination.Electricallydischargetheunitbeforecarryingoutanyworkonit.Firstisolatetheunitfromthemainssupplyandmakesurethattheunitisnotre-connectedorthesupplyplugisnotreinsertedinthe socket by yourself or anyone else before youhavecompletedthework.

Rotating partsTheHRUECO4containsrotatingmechanicalparts.Thesepartswillkeeponturningforafewsecondsafterdisconnectingtheunitfromthesupply.Forthisreasonwait at least10secondsafter isolating theproductbeforeopeningtheunit.Thefanwillnotbemovingafterthese10secondshaveelapsed.

Sharp edges of the ductsThevalvesandgrillesinyourhomeshouldalsobecleanedregularly.Thesecanberemovedfromthewallorceiling.Bewareofprotrudingductsections.Thesecanbeverysharp.

Replacing the valves and grillesThe valves should always be placed back in theiroriginal locations.Donot turn thevalveduring thecleaningprocess;ormakesuretomarkthesettingbeforecleaningthevalve.Ifthevalvesareswitchedorsetdifferently,theventilationvolumeswillnolong-erbecorrectandtheventilationsystemwillnotworkoptimally.Thebathroommaythenremainhumidfortoolong,yourtoiletmaybeverycooloryourkitchenmaysmellmouldy.

Maintenance of ductingItisourrecommendationthattheductingconnectedtotheExtractTerminals(locatedinkitchens,utilities,bathrooms and en-suites) needs to be inspectedevery3yearsandcleanedevery6years.Cleaningof the grille and ducting canbe carried outwith adampcloth.

Ventilation is necessaryInthepastpeoplebuilthouseswhichwerenotair-tight,whichleakedair,forexample,attheconnectionpointofthewallandthefloororroof.Crackswerealwaysvisiblearoundwindowsanddoors.Alltheseopeningsensuredthatlargevolumesofairmovedinandoutofthebuildings.Whenthewindwasblowingthecompleteaircontentofthehomewasrefreshedthreetofourtimesanhour.Thisensuredverygoodventilationofthehome,butalotofenergywaslost.

Constructionmethodshavechanged.Floors,wallsandroofsare,whenpossible,constructedwithalay-erofinsulation.Theinsulationensuresthattherearenearlynocracksandtheair-tightnessisincreased.Itisamisconceptiontothinkthatthereisstillenoughventilation inahomewithoutsometypeofventila-tionsystem.Ventilationisabsolutelynecessaryinanair-tighthometopreventproblemsrelatedtohumid-ity,mouldandthehealthoftheresidents.

1 Why use balanced ventilation?Moisture content of the homeIncorrectuseoftheventilationsystembytheresidentin combination with today’s well-insulated homesgiveshumidityanopenfield.Themoisturecontentin thehomes increasesandcancausehealth,hu-midityandmouldproblems.Afamilyoffourpersonsproduces14to20litresofmoistureperdayjustbybreathing,sleeping,cooking,washing,dishwashing,bathing,wateringplants,etc.Manyproducts,suchas textile, carpets, parquet, newspapers and ciga-rettes, contain substances that harm the health oftheresidents.Allthemoisturesuchaswatervapourandaromatic substancesshouldbe removed fromthehomes.

Ventilation requiresenergy.Thecorrectuseof theventilationsystemcanlimitenergylossasmuchaspossible.

YourhomehasaHeatraeSadiasuppliedHRUECO4 balanced ventilation system with heat recovery.Thissystemcancontributeextensivelytoahealthyinterior climate andanoptimumcomfort level.An-otheradvantageisthattheelectricitycostsarelowerthan thatof anyother ventilation system.Thebal-ancedventilationsystemcan,however,onlyfunctioncorrectlywhenusedandmaintainedinaresponsiblemanner.

2 The correct use of your ventilation systemSomehealthinformation:

• 5to20%ofpeoplehaveanairwaydisorder.Thenumberofhousedustmitehasincreasedahundredfoldinthepast25years.

• ThenumberofpeoplesufferingfromChronicNon-Specific Lung Disease has doubled inthelast15years.

Researchhasproventhatfightingmoistureinhomesgreatlycontributestothedecreaseofallergicreac-tionsofpeoplewithanairwaydisorder.Thecorrectuse andmaintenance of your balanced ventilationsystemmakesthispossible.

ThecentralunitofthebalancedventilationsysteminyourhomeistheHRUECO4(heatrecoveryunit).Thisunithastwomotors.Onemotorforairextrac-tionandoneforairsupply.Airisextractedfromthekitchen,bathrooms,en-suites,utilityroomsandtoi-letsand,ifrequired,fromastorageroom.Inlargerpropertiesmore than one unit may have been in-stalled.

Air extraction and air supplyThecontaminatedairisfilteredandfedthroughtheheatexchangerbeforeitisdischargedoutside.Thefreshoutsideairisalsofilteredandfedthroughtheheatexchangerbefore it isallowed into thehome.Two air flows are led alongside each other in theheatexchanger(theairflowsare,therefore,notin-termingled).Thus,energyissavedastheheatofthedischargedair istransferredtothefreshair intake.The air flows through the ventilation ducts to thebedrooms,livingroomand,ifrequired,thehallway,i.e,everyroomwithanintakegrille.

3 Operation of the balanced ventilation system

Optimum efficiencyTheheatexchange ishighlyefficient. IndependenttestsattheBuildingResearchEstablishmentshowthatupto91%ofthedischargedwarmthisreusedwithin the home. The heat loss is, therefore, onlyabout9%.

Notwithstandingtheheatexchange,whichpreheats fresh outside air, the balancedventilation system should not be seen asa heating system. It is a ventilation sys-temthatcontributestothecomfortableandhealthyclimateofyourhome.

Overflow protectionThe installationdesignassumes there isa10mmspacebetweenthebottomofallinternaldoors,out-sidedoorandthefloorcovering.Ifthefloorcoveringisthicker,thedoorsshouldbeshortened.

100% BypassTheHeatraeSadiaheatrecoveryunitHRUECO4isdeliveredasstandardwitha100%bypassvalve.This valve is completely integrated in theunit andensuresthat,ifrequired,thefreshoutsideairflowsdirectlytotheairsupplysysteminsteadofthroughthe heat exchanger. In this case there is no heattransferbetweenthewarmerdischargeairfromthehomeandthecolderintakeairthatisdrawnintothehome.Thefreshoutsideairisblowndirectlyintothehome.This is definitely an advantage in the sum-mer,whentheoutsideairisoftencoolerthantheairwithinthehome.

Frost protectionTheunitincludes,asstandard,frostprotection.Thisprotection ensures that the unit does not freezeduringthewinter.Thefrostprotectionconsistsofaunique frostvalve integratedat the topof theunit.Thefrostprotectionisfullyautomatic.

Frost protection operationIn theheat recoveryunit the fresh (colder)outsideair is partly heatedby theair discharged from thehome.Theexchangeofheattakesplacewhenbothair flows are led through the heat exchanger.Thedischargedairmaybecooledtoatemperatureverynear freezingbythecoldairenteringtheunit fromoutside.Inthiscase,theunitwillregularlyopenthefrostvalveandtakeinwarmairfromthehome.Thiswarmair ismixedwith thecoldair that is taken infromoutside.The temperature of the intakeair is,therefore,higherand thedischargeair in theheatexchangerwill also be safely above freezing. Theunitwillthusnotfreeze.

4 Bypass and frost protection Balancing the air flowInabalancedventilationsystem thevolumeofaircoming fromoutsideequals theamountofair dis-hargedfromthehome.Theoutsideairsuctionfan,therefore, turns faster when the frost protection istriggered.Thus,thevolumeofaircomingfromout-side remains the same as the amount of air dis-chargedfromthehome.Thetotalvolumeofair in-takeincreasesproportionallywiththevolumeofairtakeninfromthehomebythefrostvalve.Openingthefrostvalveisnotsufficientwhentheoutsidetem-peratureisevenlower.Theintakefanwillturnmoreslowlyand,aftersome time, thedischargeventila-torwillturnfaster.Theair,therefore,remainsabovefreezing.Thisresultsinatemporaryimbalanceoftheventilation(thevolumeofaircomingfromoutsideisnolongerequaltotheamountofairdischargedfromthehome).Whentheoutside temperature increas-es,theunitautomaticallyresetsthefanstotheinitialvalues.Theventilationisthusonceagainbalanced.

Electronic componentsThe electronic components are important parts oftheunit.Theelectroniccomponentscontroltheop-erationof theunitwhen you set themode switch.Themotorissettothespeedthatensuresthede-siredventilation.Theelectroniccomponentsconsistofabasicprintedcircuitboardandanoptionalradiofrequencymodule.Thiscanbeusedtoextendtheventilationunitwithradio frequencyoperation.Theuser should not touch the electronic components.Thesecomponentsmaybelive.

GrillesThevolumeofairthathastobeextractedisspeci-fied in theBuildingRegulations.Thevolumeofairflowingintothehomehastobeinbalancewiththeextractedvolume.Thevolumeofairextractedfromand supplied to the home should, in other words,beequal.Theminimumairvolumeperroomisalsodetermined by the Building Regulations. The setvolumeofair isdeterminedbasedonachievinganoptimumhomeclimatewithoutwastingenergy.Theairintakeanddischargeperroomarenotequal.Theextractionandintakegrillesallhavetheirownfixedpositionsandsettings.

5 Grilles

The setting of the grilles should not bechanged.Changingthesettingsmaydis-rupttheoperationofthecompleteventi-lationsystem.Grillesandvalvesshouldnotbeswitchedwitheachother.

TheHRUECO4 ‘Combiflow’systemhasbeende-signed to recoverasmuchheataspossibleand tofunctionwellusingas littleenergyaspossible.TheHeatraeSadiaHRUECO4canbeoperatedusingaradiofrequencyoperationswitch.

Radio frequency (RFT) operation switchTheRFT (radio frequency) operation switch (trans-mitter)canbeusedasa3-positionmodeswitchwithtimerfeaturefortheHRUECO4ventilationunit.Thisoperation switch can be used to set the ventilationunit to one of the three ventilationmodes (capaci-ties):Themodesare:

Mode1-Lowmode.Mode2-Mediummode.Mode3-Highmode.

The lowmode is a continuous background setting,themediummodecanbeusedforimprovedcomfortandthehighmodewhencooking,showeringorbath-ing.Theswitchalsohasatimer.Theventilationunitcanbeswitched tohighmode forapredeterminedtimebypressingthetimerbutton.Thetimerautomat-icallyswitchestheventilationunittolowmodeafterthetimehaselapsed.

RFT operation switch.

Thelengthoftimesetforthetimerisdeterminedbytheuser.Pressthetimerbuttononcetosettheventilationunittohighmodefor10minutes.Pressthetimerbuttontwicetosettheventilationunittohighmodefor20minutes.Pressthetimerbuttonthreetimestosettheventila-tionunittohighmodefor30minutes.

Iftheoperationswitchisusedbychoosingmode or whilethetimerisinoperation,thetimerisswitchedoffandtheventilationunitoperatesinthechosenmode.

6 System control Hard wired 3 position switch

TheHRUECO4canbeoperatedusingthe3posi-tionswitch.HRS-3.Stepone isusedatnight,step twoduringthe daywhen there are people at home and stepthreewhencooking,showeringorbathing.

Recommended hours of operationAnewhomecontainsapproximately2000litresofmoistureinitsfloorsandwalls.Thismoisturehastoberemovedfromthehome.Itisrecommendthatanewhomebeventilatedmoreintensivelyduringthefirstfewmonths.Forexample,bysettingtheventila-tionsystem tomediummode insteadof lowmodeduringthedaytime.Therecommendedhoursofop-erationareprovidedinthelistbelow.

Toguaranteeahealthyenvironment in yourhomewe recommend the followingdailyhoursofopera-tionfortheventilationsystem:Atmost14hoursinlowmode.Atleast8hoursinmediummode.Atleast2hoursinhighmode.

GrillesThegrilleshave tobecleaned regularly toensuretheconstantandreliableoperationoftheventilationsystemandforyourownhealth.Makesurethatthesettingofthesystem(airflow)isnotchangedwhenyou clean the grilles. The valve could be turnedbyaccidentand thiswouldmean that theopeningbecomes larger or smaller. Each grille should beplacedbackinthesameductopeninginthesameroomfromwhichitwasremoved.

FiltersTheheatrecoveryunitandtheextractorhavefilters.Thefilterspreventthecontaminationoftheventila-tion, guarantee years of correct operation anden-surethatcleanairisblownintoyourhome.Thisisveryimportantforyourhealth.Checkandcleanthefiltersregularlyandreplacethefilterswhenneces-sary.Thisensuresthehomeisventilatedsufficientlyatalltimes.Thefilterscanbecleanedmanuallybywashingthem.

Cleaning grilles without filtersGrilleswithout filters can be taken out of the ductopening(twisttotheleft).Beforeyoucleanthegrillein warm water (with detergent), remove the foamplasticring.Aftercleaning,thegrillecanbereplacedintheductopeningwithatwisttotheright.Alwaysmakesureyoureplaceagrilleinthesameroom.InadditionmakesureNOTtoalterthesettingofthegrille.

Condensate dischargeThewarmcontaminatedairpassesalongthecolderfreshoutsideair in theheatexchangerof theheatrecovery unit. This can often result in condensatebeingformed,thereforetheHRUECO4hasanin-tegralcondensatedischargedrain.ThisdrainhasaPVCcouplingwitha40mmexternaldiameter.Theinstallerconnectsthiscouplingoftheheatrecoveryunit to the house sewerage grey water system orsurfacewaterdrainpipeusingaseparateremovablerubbercoupling.

Anair trapwithaminimum leveldifferenceof250mmisaddedinthisconnection.Abovetheairtrap,abranchpipeismountedata45-degreeangle.Thisbranchpipehasacoverwitharubberring.Thiscanbeopened to easily topup thewater trap.This isrequiredtomaintainorrestorethewatertrap.

Fixed coupling with fill openingIftheairtraprunsdry,theairfromthehousesew-eragewillbeabletoenter throughtheunitandbedischargedoutsideby thedischarge ventilator.Nosmellwillbecausedbutthedischargecapacitywilldecrease.Werecommendrefillingtheairtrapquar-terly.Thewaterwillevaporatemorequicklyinsum-mer.

Smells near the coupling with the condensa-tion discharge hoseWhentheairtraprunsdry,adirectconnectionwiththehousesewerageiscreated.Thiscreatessmells.Refill theairtrapusingthefillopeningtosolvetheproblem.Effectivedischargeofcookingandbakingvapoursinthekitchenisguaranteedbytheextrac-tor.Theextractorisconnectedtothebalancedven-tilationsystem.

Itispreferabletohavearegisteredinstallercarryoutthecleaning.

TheHeatraeSadiaHRUECO4warrantyisvalidfor2yearsafterinstallationdate.Theinstallationdateisindicatedonthetypeplate.

Thewarrantydoesnotapplyto:• Disassemblyandassemblycosts.• Faultswhichare,inouropinion,causedbyin-correcttreatment,negligenceoranaccident.

• Faults that have been caused by repairs orintended repairs by third partieswithout ourauthorisation.

• Faultscausedbyirregularand/orincompe-tentmaintenance.

• Modificationtotheappliance.• Incorrectinstallationoftheappliance.• Incorrectpowersupply,pleaserefertopage3forcorrectpowersupply.

Should the unit become damaged or malfunction,switchitoff, isolatingit fromthemainssupply,andcontactHeatraeSadiaimmediately.

8 Warranty conditions

Thewarranty isonlyvalid if thewarrantycardwasfilled inbyyoursupplieron thedateof installationandifit issentalongwithanyrequestforrepair(areceipt including thedateof installation isalsoac-ceptable).Thiswarrantycardshouldbefilledinontheinstallationdateandbekeptbytheuser.
