HS Garden ProjectHarrison Steel started a com-

pany garden at the Sand Farm! Overthe past May shutdown week, a30,000 square foot plot was tilled andplanted with an assortment of veg-etables. Because of the large deerand critter population, a fence wasconstructed as well. Thank you toall of the staff that helped to pull thisoff in just a week!

The produce grown in the gar-den will be given to HS employees atno cost. Hopefully, Mother Naturewill cooperate and give us greatweather for a bountiful harvest!

If you would like to volunteerto help with garden tasks such as wa-tering and weeding, there is a sign-up sheet in the Main office in Hu-man Resources. Also, you can usethe following SharePoint link to signup or call HR to get your name onthe list.

May 2013 SurveillanceAudit Report

Dave Hollander

As those who attended the clos-ing meeting on May 8 know, the lastsurveillance audit went very well.

The Purchasing Departmentimplemented effective corrective ac-tion to address the nonconformityfrom the November 2012 audit andto minimize the chance that it mightrecur.

This audit covered the generalsystem and the core processes –

Sales, Purchasing, Human Re-sources, Advanced Product QualityPlanning (APQP), and Manufactur-ing. The auditor had a few observa-tions, but did not issue any correc-tive action notices. The observationshave been or are being addressed.

The next audit will be for themandatory three-year recertification.A two-man audit team will be atHarrison Steel April 8, 9, and 10,2014. The tentative plans are for ourcurrent surveillance auditor, SteveRitchie, to audit the manufacturingprocesses, and for the “oversight au-ditor” to audit the general QMS andFront Office processes. Mr. Ritchiementioned that the part of the over-sight auditor’s assignment will be toaudit his auditing to ensure it re-mains in compliance with the stan-dard and the SRI requirements.

A welcome piece of news wasthat HS will be able to keep Mr.Ritchie as our surveillance auditor. Our experience has been that he hasbeen very thorough in finding prob-lems in our system, and a lot of valueand understanding for HS has re-sulted from implementing correctiveactions to address these problems.

Thanks to everyone for con-tinuing their efforts to help maintainthe HS Quality Management System.

HEAT RELATEDINJURIES SAFETY

MESSAGEAsst Safety Manager Jeff

CarlsonIt’s getting warmer out again

and that means hydrate! Heat relatedinjuries can affect all ages and levelsof fitness. The effects range from tem-porary discomfort to immediatethreats to life requiring emergencyresponse. Fortunately, through un-derstanding the hazards and how toavoid them, injury due to heat andexertion can be avoided. Beautifulweather and long days inspire us togo outside and get active after thedreary winter months. As the tem-perature rises on a hot day, however,so does the potential for heat-relatedillness and injury. The progressionof heat illness symptoms can besubtle; the affected person may noteven know he or she is becoming ill.Start by understanding the threat.Know that you and others aroundyou are exposed to hazardous condi-tions on those hot days and hot con-ditions, and stay alert for the symp-toms. Learn to spot the signs of adeveloping problem in a family mem-ber, co-worker, or even yourself. Beprepared to react with appropriatefirst aid in a heat emergency. Stay-ing hydrated, eating properly, andbeing well rested are key factors inpreventing heat related injuries.Tossing back a few cold ones and

eating Cheetos is fine, just do it inmoderation. Enjoy the summer andbe safe everyone!

12 Tips for Staying CoolThis Summer

Be aware of the heat. Pay at-tention to it and modify your activi-ties appropriately.

Pay attention to your hydrationstatus, and be sure to drink plentyof fluids (NOT beer, caffeinated, orsugary drinks). When you urinatecheck the color. If you’re hydratedproperly your urine should barelyhave a light yellow tint to it. If it lookslike lemonade or worse, orange juice, you are not hydrated and are at riskfor a heat related injury.

Try to stay in relatively cool ar-eas, even when outside. Many pub-lic places such as libraries, shoppingmalls and movie theatres are air con-ditioned.

Avoid hot enclosed places, such as cars. Never leave childrenunattended in a car parked in thesun.

Use a fan, if available.

Stay on the lowest floor of yourbuilding.

Eat well-balanced, light andregular meals. Eat lots of fruits asthey have high water content andthey are very good for you.

Wear loose-fitting, lightweightand light-colored clothing.

Cover windows that receive asignificant amount of sun withdrapes or shades to help keep yourhouse cool.

Weather stripping and properinsulation will keep cool air insideyour home.

Cool beverages are good forcooling down the body, while al-coholic drinks can impair thebody’s ability to regulate its tem-perature. Water and sports drinksare the best way to keep you hy-drated. Pop, beer, energy drinks, coffee, Kool-Aid, and any numberof highly sugary drinks on themarket today are not good for hy-dration. They will in fact dehy-drate you and make things worse.
