Nature vs. Nurture is a very highly debated topic in the world of biologyand evolution. At HSC, we have the best of both worlds. It is aninstitution that nurtures our nature! It allows everyone to get involved inan extremely wide spectrum of events and activities, from soccer on themountaintop campus to hiking through the rain forests of Costa Rica.Volunteering is not just a requirement to graduate the Senior School, but instead is incorporated into the mission and goals of HSC so thatour students can make the most of their experiences and also giveback to the community. Whether that be in planting trees in Grade 10geography or building schools in the Dominican Republic, it becomes a school-wide effort allowing for the greatest outreach. HSC was somuch more than a school. It was a home and community that brought a way of life with it that could not be matched anywhere else. ”

As documented in the Annual Report 2006/07, the College is financially sound and our finances continue to be managed in a judicious and responsible manner. Building a culture of philanthropy, the HSC community demonstrated great generosity and commitment in 2006-2007, successfully completing and indeed exceeding the DeGroote Family DonationChallenge. These donated funds are allowing us to enrich the learning experiences of our students through enhancements such as the integration of educational technology while also pushing ahead with other improvements such as the installation of air conditioning in Lawson Hall and the Senior School’s Strathallan Building. As we contemplate futureenhancements to our facilities, we all recognize the need to build on this progress and to set our goals even higher.

Upon reflection, the 2006-2007 school year clearly embodied theCollege theme of ‘Building Excellence’. Working together with renewedoptimism and a shared sense of purpose, I truly believe that we madesubstantial progress in making a great school even better.

Following much consultation and input from faculty and staff, as well as students, parentsand alumni, we worked with the architectural firm of Moriyama and Teshima in completingthe schematic design for the Transformation Project, consisting of an entirely new SeniorSchool and College-wide athletic complex. Characterized by a bold and exciting vision of howwe must prepare our students for the challenges of the twenty-first century, this project willtransform the HSC campus and will have a profound impact on the daily experiences of all of our students. It will also clearly establish HSC as Canada’s preeminent co-educationalindependent day school.
2006-2007 was the year in which we completed our re-branding exercise. Forty-five years after the move of Hillfield and Strathallan to a common campus, we formally integrated thecolours and symbols of our two founding schools as reflected in changes to student uniforms, including the introduction of new school, house and prefect ties. We also adopted a new logofeaturing the shield and mottos granted to HSC by the Crown in 2005, as well as our newtagline, Here Excellence Is a Way of Life. Along with our Mission, Vision and Values, this tagline is already functioning as an important touchstone as we strive for ongoingorganizational improvement.
Program enhancements, including the rapid expansion of our Advanced Placement program, and the integration of educational technology are having a dramatic impact on our students’learning experiences. In its second year, our ambitious Curriculum Mapping Project involvedall faculty members and brought together teams of teachers in powerful collegial

conversations about curriculum, pedagogy and resources. Within one year, we will have developeda so-called Master Map detailing our academic program from M3/JK to Grade 12 and providingour students with a seamless educational journey College-wide.
As expected, the graduates of 2007 made us proud, securing strong Advanced Placement resultsand going on to pursue their studies at a variety of post-secondary institutions across Canada, as well as in the United States and overseas. Every year, we survey our previous year’s graduatesduring their first year at university to determine how well they were prepared by HSC for their post-secondary studies. The feedback received in 2006-2007 affirmed the importance of thevigorous academic preparation provided to our students in ensuring that they are undaunted by demanding first year university programs. As one graduate declared:
“At HSC, the focus, especially in the last two years of high school, was on preparing for university, so it’s hard to feel unprepared. From specifics such as citing sources to avoid plagiarism and developing anarrowed thesis to the larger skills necessary for success such as coping with stress and time management,HSC covered pretty much everything. The help and encouragement were always there...”
In conclusion, I would like to express my deep appreciation to our students and their parents, our faculty, our staff, our alumni and all of our volunteers for contributing to what has been awatershed year. We have worked hard and have made wonderful progress in Building Excellence to the benefit not only of our current students, but also to the benefit of future generations ofstudents who will follow in our footsteps.

My connections to Hillfield Strathallan College began in
1966 when I entered Kindergarten. Today, more than
forty years later my wife Andrea and I are proud parents
of three HSC students (Natasha, Grade 7, Alexa, Grade 5
and Sasha, Montessori 8). In the intervening years I have
witnessed great strides and many changes at this amazing
College, and feel confident in saying that never have we
been so well-positioned for the challenges of the great
plans on our horizons. The Board and my own family feel
that we are indeed “Continuing the Journey” towards
academic excellence.
Last year the Board of Governors and the Headmaster
completed a full review of the Strategic Plan created in
2004. Four key directions were identified at that time, and
we are proud to say that all have been either realized or
considerably advanced in a professional and timely
fashion: enhancing facilities; building trust among HSC
stakeholders; ensuring financial sustainability; and
creating a strong profile. In addition, the planning process
identified the “Fifth Direction” concentrating on key
initiatives to enhance academic and co-curricular
programs, such as the Curriculum Mapping Project and
enhancements to the outdoor education and community
service programs.
Ongoing facilities upgrades continue to be implemented
to existing buildings around the campus, and the Board
of Governors was also pleased to approve the project
concept and architect selection for the new Senior School
and athletic facility. You will be hearing more in the
coming months about the very exciting Transformation
Project and the Transformation HSC Campaign. More
detailed information on the Strategic Plan updates can be
found online at www.hsc.on.ca under ‘The News Room.’
This past year marked the end of terms of office for several
of our Board Members, and we are most grateful for their
dedication and hard work on behalf of the College.
Chair’s Message - Board of Governors
Continuing the Journey…
“Supported by a long and proud history … Hillfield Strathallan is today inthe midst of a transformation.

I must convey my personal and sincere thanks to outgoing
Board of Trustees Chair, George McCarter, who willingly
accepted a third year to his term of office to allow for a
smooth integration of the major plans to develop our
Office of College Advancement. George successfully
oversaw a strategic re-direction for the Board of Trustees,
with clearly articulated goals and roles. The reins have
now been passed to Dr. Agnes Kuskowski, and we very
much look forward to her tenure as the new Chair of the
Board of Trustees.
The Canadian Educational Standards Institute in our
2006 evaluation commented that “Innovation and vision
have always been a large part of what makes HSC so
successful at educating young minds.” Under the firm
leadership of Dr. Tom Matthews, the Board of Governors
is confident that this educational vision and innovation
remains in very capable hands.

The Board of Trustees this year concentrated on two
main areas with very positive outcomes. A major
accomplishment for 2006-2007 was the development of
a new Investment and Disbursement Policy for the HSC
Endowment Fund, approved by the Board of Governors in
June 2007. These policies will guide Governors, Trustees
and Staff in ensuring that returns on investments are
maximized for the benefit of our students in the
long term. During this year we made the first major
disbursement from our Endowment Fund, allocating
$70,000 in support of the HSC Scholarship Program.
The other main area of work for both Boards this past
year was to clarify the role of the Board of Trustees.
As Trustees we have a dual purpose, clarified in a new
constitution, supporting the College’s fundraising
activities, and monitoring the investments in the
Endowment Fund. These roles are enthusiastically
embraced by the Board of Trustees.
You will see elsewhere in this Report that we proudly
and successfully met our fundraising goals this year.
All members of the HSC community worked diligently
towards fulfilling the DeGroote Family Donation
Challenge, which resulted in our raising in excess of $1.7
million for various projects and campaigns over the past
2 years. The leadership and generosity of the DeGroote
Family cannot be underestimated; their Challenge
reinvigorated our fundraising efforts at HSC in a way not
previously seen. In addition, the Challenge drew us all
closer together, and we must thank our ever-active and
wonderful Parents’ Association and Alumni Association
for their record-breaking contributions in this past year.
Both Associations raised more from their fundraising
events than ever before, and our students are already
reaping the benefits of those community-wide initiatives.
We also saw more donors giving to the Excelsior Annual
Giving campaign, with larger gifts, than ever before.
Chair’s Message - Board of Trustees
Strategic Directions Defined
“Hillfield Strathallan College has been a pivotal educational resource toHamilton and area for more than 100 years, and will continue to be apowerful contributor to our community for the next 100 years.

The expansion of our donor base from Alumni, Parents
and Staff is highly significant, and speaks to a renewed
sense of community and purpose at the College.
On behalf of both Boards, we extend our sincere thanks
to all members of the Office of College Advancement for
their hard work in the areas of alumni and parent relations,
media exposure, publications and, of course, fundraising.
Looking forward as I step down as Chair of the Board of
Trustees along with another Trustee at the end of his
term, Dean Mosca, we have both seen many wonderful
changes at the College during our terms of office. We
have been proud to be a part of steering those changes.
The Board of Trustees will be expanded in numbers under
a new Chair, Dr. Agnes Kuskowski, in September 2007,
and I know they will all continue to be supportive of the
major campaign initiatives on the horizon.
I would particularly like to acknowledge the early vision
of some key volunteer leaders at HSC who were formative
in creating the early direction of our original Foundation:
Dr. John Frid, Bruce Heagle, Ed Walzak, Bruce Gabel and
Val Lush, former Board of Trustee Chairs. Through the
dedication and hard work of these and many others since,
Hillfield Strathallan College is very well positioned to
continue delivering the academic excellence and global
citizenship model that we have enshrined in our Mission
and Vision.

What does Community mean to HSC?
One of the first things many of us think of when askedwhat makes Hillfield Strathallan College such a specialplace is its strong sense of community. It’s an interestingtheme, and has some different perspectives depending onwhether you are a parent, a student, an alumnus, or amember of staff and faculty. A key mandate of the Officeof College Advancement is to ensure that we foster thestrong sense of community participation and connection, and to communicate the stories that bind us closely toone another.
Our celebrations of community purpose are contained ina variety of publications, such as the HSC Review and theAnnual Report, as well as news items on our website andin our regular e-news communications. Our re-brandinginitiative was completed in 2006, and incorporated intoall of our publications with very good feedback.
Success with Fundraising Partnerships
Our increased participation in a wide variety offundraising projects in 2006-2007 led to the successfulcompletion of one of the biggest donation challenges ever recorded at HSC. Few of us would be unaware of the unprecedented $1 million donation challenge offeredby the DeGroote family. With a renewed sense of unitedcommunity working towards a common goal, wesuccessfully completed the DeGroote Family DonationChallenge by June 30, 2007 with the help of our entirecommunity. The Parents’ Association and the AlumniAssociation both reported record fundraising years,
and the Excelsior Annual Giving Campaign similarly raised more than ever before. Our two-year campaignraised in excess of $1.7 million in support of academicprogram enhancements, program resources and facilitiesrenewal projects.
Partnerships Beyond the Gates
This year also saw a marked increase in developing key partnerships with organizations beyond ourimmediate and internal community. HSC has long and actively supported community initiatives throughpartnerships with such varied organizations as theWellwood Centre, the Terry Fox Run, International ChildCare, the Colin Glassco Foundation, the Heart and StrokeFoundation, Mission Services, Neighbour to Neighbour, the St. Leonard’s Society GreenByte Program, RotaryInternational, and many more.
In addition, this past year we have forged new and strongsponsor partnerships with some leading businesses in ourcommunity. Many of these come through our generousparent and alumni community who intrinsicallyunderstand the value of the enhancements we are able tomake in our College as a result of their sponsorship.Others come from outside our gates entirely, and speak tothe growing awareness of the value of our College to thecommunity at large. Decades of educated, well-roundedstudents involved in giving back to their global and localcommunities is the ultimate testament of ourcommitment to the world beyond our gates.

Dawn excelled in most athletic endeavours, and wasknown for her exceptional field hockey and track and field abilities, winning countless awards for these skills.Dawn credits her coaches and teachers for her incredibledevelopment during her time at HSC. She graduated from HSC in 1978 and went on to build a very successfulbusiness with husband Nick Eveley. Eveley International is a Platinum Sponsor for Homecoming each year, as wellas a key sponsor of the HSC Golf Classic. Dawn shares,“It is important to us both that all HSC students benefitfrom the donations we make to the College.”
Today Dawn and Nick are the parents of twin boys,Brandon and Byron who are proud to “go to the sameCollege Mom did.” Dawn is impassioned to give back tothe College that gave her so much. She has been an activeparticipant around campus, and has, for the past threeyears, played a pivotal role on the HSC Alumni Executiveas the Chair of Homecoming.
For those of you who have witnessed the rebuilding of the HSC Homecoming Day, you have watched Dawn lead a team of dedicated volunteers to build a huge day of programming, welcoming over 1200 guests to our
campus each year. Dawn and her team have brought ahigh level of support to the Homecoming vision, such asthe major sponsorship by Chris Morgan ’79 of MorganInternational. “Chris is just one example of several Alumni who have been excited to get involved. I am alsoimpressed with the community supporters outside ourgates, who are also keen to help the College when asked,”says Dawn.
Dawn would like to encourage more Alumni to reconnectto HSC. “It isn’t the amount, or type of donation thatmatters; every gift of time, gifts in kind or financial giftscontribute to the future of the College, and to the futureof the children.”
Dawn continues to be inspired by her father’s personalmotto, Nulli Secundus, which translates to: “Second toNone”. Dawn shares, “I truly see HSC as second to none;I am proud of HSC and if you are proud to be at HSC,you should be a proud supporter.”
Dawn Eveley was the only girl among three siblings. Dawn confides, “I wasdetrimentally shy and introverted, and my father, Gordon Fell, decided thatHillfield Strathallan College would be the best place for my education.”

HSC’s operating fund, with the strong showing indonations and fundraising revenues, posted an excess ofrevenue over expenses of $1.612 million - financing thepurchase of $866 thousand of capital assets. In addition, the fund financed $103 thousand of operating expensesin the expansion fund through net asset transfers. Furthertransfers of $67 thousand were made from the operatingto the endowment fund. These transfers were offset by$70 thousand received from the endowment to offsetscholarships expended in the operating fund. The fundfinished the year with a healthy balance of $845 thousand- reflected therein is over $300 thousand of donated andfundraised amounts that will be spent for various priorityneeds in the upcoming school year.
The Expansion Fund financed $536 thousand of capitalasset purchases during the year including completion of the Transportation Office, surrounding landscape and walkways and architectural design fees with respect to future expansion on the west campus. The architecturaldesign phase was completed during the year. Donationsreceived into the fund during the year of $290 thousandwill be held for future expansion construction. These donations in addition to the earned revenue of$581 thousand received in the year approximate the $887 thousand year end balance in the fund.
HSC maintains and improves its buildings, grounds andequipment through a program of planned upgrades andreplacements. These projects are funded primarily fromthe operating fund, with the exception of expansionaryprojects which are funded from the Expansion Fund. In 2007 the cost of property, plant and equipment
maintenance and upgrades, together with finalconstruction costs for the Transportation Office, provided $1.4 million of new assets in the capital fund.Funding for approximately $215 thousand of these assets came from our 2006 Annual Campaign and the2006 fundraising efforts of our Parents’ Association. These amounts are recorded as revenue in the donationand fundraising lines of the operating fund and areincluded in the net asset transfer of $866 thousand fromoperating to the capital funds to finance asset purchases. After amortization, the net book value (fund balance) of capital assets is $12 million.
After related expenses, investment and donation revenues in the Endowment Fund realized an excess of $67 thousand bringing the fund balance to approximately$1.6 million at cost. As previously noted, an additional$67 thousand generated through fundraising efforts was transferred to the Endowment Fund through netassets. A $70 thousand offsetting transfer from theendowment to the operating fund was used to reduce the $152 thousand cost of scholarships expended in theoperating fund - netting to the $3 thousand outgoingtransfer presented in the net assets of the endowment. The market value of the fund as at June 30, 2007 was$1.775 million (2006 - $1.470 million). 2007 total returnon endowment investments was 11.4%.
In keeping with its Mission, Vision and Values, HSCcontinues to support student program excellence and enhancement by maintaining responsible fiscalmanagement, planned capital asset enhancement andcampus expansion projects.
Fiscal 2007 saw HSC continue to strengthen its financial position while makingsteady progress towards future expansion on the west side of the College campus.Fundraising efforts continued to be successful. Several singularly large amountswere generously donated towards west campus expansion.
