It gives me great pleasure to present the Year 12 Music class for 2012 to you this evening. Tonight will be a night of inspiring performances and entertainment from some our finest musicians.

The 2012 HSC Music class consists of five students who have elected to do the Music 2 and Music Extension course, all majoring in Performance. We also have Harley Milano joining the Music Extension course this year, who completed the Music 2 course component last year as an accelerated student.

With all six students majoring in performance, this means that 33 pieces are being prepared for the HSC performance assessment, along with 5 compositions, 5 log books, and a music teacher who is ever so grateful for the support she receives from all of the boy’s instrumental teachers, our wonderful accompanist Mrs Christine Dean and our talented composition teacher, Dr Peter Marshall.

WELCOME TO THE 2012 SHOWCASE EVENING

Page 3: HSC Music Showcase Evening Programme

Tonight, the boy’s versatility and virtuosity will surely surprise you. The programme tonight will take you from the beautiful sounds of Chopin, Weber or Cassado, to the Cool Jazz sounds of Brubeck, to the streets of Broadway and even to the extremities of 21st Century Art Music realms where playing any instrument in the normal fashion is just not enough.Over the past six years, I’ve had the chance to see these boys grow and develop into the talented young musicians that stand before you tonight. They are a group of fine young King’s men who I’m sure will succeed at anything they set their minds to. Their participation over the past six years in the Music programme, whether it be in Choir, Band or Orchestra, will be surely missed when they leave us in a few weeks time.

I truly hope that you enjoy the HSC Music Showcase Evening for 2012.

Mrs Carlie PurkisTeacher for Year 12 2012

The HSC Music Performance Night is a real treat for so many: not only the boys performing, but their parents, family, friends, teachers and the wider King’s community. It is a night to celebrate the achievements in performance and composition of some of our most talented musicians as they put their own creativity and expressive skills on the line. Each of these young men will reveal a little of their soul through their performance or composition. For many, this is the culmination of many years of practice and perseverance. Coming to the end of their time here at King’s, I hope that the experiences they have had in music continue to enrich their lives as adults.

BENJAMIN HE

Benjamin is a highly talented pianist who has been playing for 12 years. He has been awarded his AMusA (Distinction) and LTCL (Distinction).

For the core composition aspect of the Music 2 course, Benjamin has composed a piano work based on inspirations from the Australian composer Carl Vine.

Tonight, Benjamin will be performing three (3) of his pieces:

Brahms – Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano Op. 114 (Mvt. I)This trio was one of four chamber works written by Brahms during 1891. During the first performance of this work, the piano part was played by Brahms himself, alongside the famous clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld and cellist Robert Hausmann. Tonight, the cello part will be played by fellow HSC student, Julian Walmsley, and the clarinet part will be played by Year 9 student, HD Tang.

Chopin – Ballade in G Minor Op.23 No. 1This piece was written by Chopin between 1835 – 36, when he was based in Paris, and was dedicated to Monsieur le Baron de Stockhausen. Whilst still in the true “Romantic” style, this piece uses some unusual harmonies and structure. Technically demanding, this piece requires the player to play rapid scales and very fast and large chords.

Debussy – Feux d’artifice (“Fireworks”)Claude-Archille Debussy (1862 -1918) is a French impressionist composer who wrote this piece during 1909-1910. “Feux d’artifice (Fireworks)” comes from Preludes (Bk 2), all of which have a programmatic titles, which were written at the end of each work, allowing the performer to experience each individual sound world with fresh ears, without being influenced by Debussy’s titles beforehand.

RYLAND JOYCE

Ryland is a multi talented musician who has chosen to perform on Flute and Voice for his HSC. Recently, Ryland achieved his ATCL in Singing.

For the core composition aspect of the Music 2 course, Ryland has composed a chamber work based on inspirations from Japanese Music, in particular the Akebono scale.

Tonight, Ryland will be performing three (3) of his pieces:

Rodgers & Hammerstein II – SoliloquyThis piece comes for the Broadway musical, Carousel, written by Rodgers and Hammerstein II in 1945. “Soliloquy” is the final song from Act One of this musical, in which the main character Bill Bigelow has just found out that he is going to be a father. Bill, hoping for a boy realizes halfway through the song that there is possibility of it being a girl. He continues to ponder on the life his child might have and ends with a magnificent declaration of the love for his unborn child.

Martinu – Trio for Flute, Cello and PianoWritten by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu in 1944, this trio represents the neoclassical period of music in which clarity of structure, melody and harmony was of most importance. Tonight, Ryland will be accompanied by Ms Stephanie Chun on Cello and Mrs Christine Dean on Piano.

Sartori & Quarantotto – Con té Partiro Con té Partiro (commonly known as “Time to Say Goodbye”) was made famous by the Italian tenor singer, Andrea Bocelli in 1995. With majority of the lyrics in Italian, this song speaks of someone longing to set out on a journey of adventure with his loved one.

HARLEY MILANO

Harley is a highly talented bassonist who completed the HSC Music 2 course last year, receiving a mark of 95. He has achieved his AMusA (Distinction) and is hoping to complete his LTCL in September and LMusA in October.

This year, Harley has also competed in the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra’s NSW Secondary Schools’ Competition, reaching the semifinals.

Tonight, Harley will be performing all three (3) of his Music Extension pieces:

Ibert – Cinque Pièces en trio (Allegro Vivo – Andantino – Allegro Assai – Andante – Allegro Quasi Marsiale)This trio was written by French composer Jacques Ibert in 1935 for Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon, and consists of five movements. Ibert was a composer who refused to be categorized into a certain style of music, and therefore, it is said that he is more of an eclectic composer. Tonight, Harley will be accompanied by David Abbott on Clarinet and Ennes Mehmedbasic on Oboe.

Weber – Andante and Hungarian Rondo Op. 3Carl Maria von Weber (1786 – 1826) was a German composer, pianist, conductor and music critic. Weber wrote this piece in 1809 for his brother Fritz, a violist. In 1813 it was arranged for Georg Friedrich Brandt, for whom Weber had already written his full-length concerto.

Nussio – Variations on an Arietta by Pergolesi (Mvt I, II, V, VI, VIII)Written in 1953 by Italian composer Otmar Nussio, this piece was originally written for Bassoon and String Orchestra and consists of 10 movements. Whilst influenced by Pergolesi’s music, it has been said that; “Pergolesi’s music is subjected to a number of unusual treatments, retaining his sense of tonality but with Nussio creating variety in the different sections, with styles ranging from rapid ostinati, to a theatrical rhapsody, sentimental elegy and a ferocious dance.” (Review by Carla Rees)

Maurice – Tableaux de Provence (Mvt. V)Tableaux de Provence (“Pictures of Provence”) is a programmatic piece written by French composer Paule Maurice during 1948 – 1955, dedicated to French saxophonist Marcel Mule.
