Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole youEvery person’s life tells a story, and every person has his or her story about life. Oneof my stories has been the choice between soul and ego. After years of believing thatyou picked one or the other, I’ve concluded they are both integral parts of human life.Just as the brain, lungs and heart have separate functions in a body, so too do the souland ego. As such, these two facets have distinct priorities and which one we give ourallegiance to creates a different life focus. For example, egos search for goals, defin-itives, comfort, winning, accomplishments, and end results. While souls seek authen-ticity, creativity, expression, depth, experiences, growth, journeys, and expansion.Because of their potential contrasts, sometimes our souls and egos divide, causing asplintering that is similar to a business meeting where all in attendance have separateagendas. Human life is full of paradox, as exemplified in breathing, the very thingthat keeps us alive. For we can not breathe in without breathing out and vice versa. There is nothing better about in or out, they are equal in their opposites. Embracingthis, and its implications, may be a giant step to wholeness.

I recently had a portrait photo session with a talented photographer who had takenone of my “Calling Council” workshops (6 weeks of modern shamanic journeys). Inote the latter, because she wanted the portrait to show that side of me—the teacher,my ancient self, and dare I say my soul. I brought with me a selection of feathersand skulls that touch and open my heart. As of now, I have seen only two of the photos, both amazing—one especially unique (see below). In this one image I canvisibly see the presence and strength that I had otherwise only felt. At the same time,it also shows me that a photo is simply an image of a moment in time. Our lives area string of ongoing moments—some powerful, some weak and many more inbetween. While a photo says more than a thousand words, it is still only a morsel ofthe person or situation. We all have endless depths below what can be seen on thesurface. It is our responsibility to swim in those depths and learn what makes up ‘us’regardless of whether it touches the outside world or is understood by anyone else.It is wise to remember that all others have the same expanse below what we see orunderstand about them, as well.

I took an online class on branding to boost my writing, public speaking and work-shops. This would not normally be my cup of tea, yet I respect the teacher anddecided to go for it based on that. Creating a brand had previously felt artificial. However, this class, in addition to the photo session, made me realize we arealways projecting an image. To do so mindfully is actually more authentic thansimply letting chance create it. While it is also true that the image is just a frac-tion of who I am as a whole, I’d like it to be a representation of the place wheremy inner and outer worlds intersect. Being clear about our presentation to theworld does not equal control over how other’s see us, nor is that of any signifi-cance to our soul. Egos want to be seen in a specific way, happy, successful, beau-tiful. While souls want to experience the happiness, success and beauty. Beingtrue to ourselves, sincerely, compassionately, creatively, is doing our part. Therest is out of our hands. In the end, we only have our own heart to answer to.

A place both my soul and personality simultaneously ignite is listening to music—especially live. Sometimes it’s popular musicians with big names, more often it’speople who just love music. They don’t neccesarily make a living from it or gather

fans, but to these people not making music is a kind of death. Iwas recently at a show with a variety of performers each with adifferent sound. The one similarity among them was that theyexposed their souls with their music. It’s been said, “Perhaps thebest mark of personal heroism is not astounding courage oraccomplishments, but authentic self-expression...” While, theselocals weaved soul in to each note and lyric, some big musiciansmiss depth in their performances simply because performing regularly alleviates the vulnerability that often exposes souls.

What is your story; meaning what are your beliefs, assumptions, expectations, desires, memories, wants, relationships, friends, childhood experiences, and how does it all fit together? What wetell ourselves and repeat aloud to others becomes our reality, becomes the glasses through which we see the world, definesour decisions, and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Can youexamine the stories you tell the world and yourself, discerningwhere there is truth and conversly falsity? Can you open to whatyour life is and the endless possibilities of what it could be? Likemany valuable exercises, this will be ongoing. In part becausewe miss things the first, or even 100th, time around. But alsobecause we change constantly. I’d like to mention one caveatthat I am quite familiar with, which is the desire to bypass theparts we don’t like within the picture. There is a cultural ideal ofseeing only the positive or looking at things from a spiritual paradigm. While that can be admirable, this method often overlooks angles that are dictating fundamental life experiencesincluding our emotional needs. In a world of pain, this positiveor spiritual bypass is a constant temptation. Yet, it can be adetour on the path to genuine happiness and wholeness. In ourefforts to leapfrog to something better, we can avoid a crucialpart. The writer Parker Palmer puts it “I deny my inner darkness, giving it more power over me, or I project it onto other people, creating ‘enemies’ where none exist.” While there is no need todwell on these facets, recognizing their existence opens us toreleasing them. Palmer also says “Wholeness does not mean perfection: it means embracing brokenness as an integral part oflife.” As I see it in this moment, happiness and wholeness are notabout being all smiles and laughter. Instead, they are a deep-rooted sense of well-being that sustains through feelings of sadness, hurt, anger, joy, and circumstances that overwhelm.

I’ve asked a lot of ques-tions and here are a fewmore; what lights upboth your soul and yourego? What unifies youremotions and yourintellect? What nourish-es your body and spirit? The answers may be thefoundation of yourstory, your chance forjoy and a life of whole-ness and fulfillment.

From my soul,

The Second Annual Albany Peace Projectscheduled To Begin January 2015Do you ever watch the news and feel discouraged?Do you often feel stressed and trapped with life’s challenges?

If so, you may want to participate in the The Albany Peace Projectthat not only empowers people to cope more effectively with theirown personal stressors, but may also simultaneously positivelyimpact Albany, NY.

The Albany Peace Project is a 10 year research study designed todetermine if an organized group of trained meditators creating a"coherent state" in their bodies and then focusing peaceful inten-tion outwardly can measurably reduce local violence. The hypoth-esis is that focused peaceful intention has real world impact, anddozens of prior research studies suggest it as well. The AlbanyPeace Project team is gathering evidence to determine if thisapproach can positively impact our local community.

Each day in January 2015, meditations will be emailed to over1000 participants that will lead them into a state of peacefulcoherence, and Karin Reinhold, professor of Mathematics atSUNY Albany, will review the violent crime data of the AlbanyPolice Department to determine if the positive intentions made ameasurable impact.

This year The Albany Peace Project is collaborating with theInstitute of HeartMath, an internationally recognized nonprofitresearch and education organization dedicated to helping peoplereduce stress, self-regulate emotions and build energy andresilience to live more healthy, happy lives. The Albany PeaceProject will offer daily meditations that include the Institute ofHeartMath’s evidence based technique, the Heart Lock-In®which reliably leads participants’ nervous systems into a stateknown as “coherence”.

Personal coherence, refers to the synchronization of the physical, mental and emotional systems. It can be measured by heart-rhythm patterns: The more balanced and smooth they are, themore in sync, or coherent, we are. Stress levels recede, energy lev-els increase a state of optimal clarity, perception and performanceemerges.

The founder of the Albany Peace Project is Bethany Gonyea, abiofeedback specialist who has observed the power of focusedintention inside the body for over twenty years through herbiofeedback practice. Biofeedback therapy involves trainingpatients to control physiological processes such as muscle tension, blood pressure, or heart rate. These processes usually occur invol-untarily, however, patients who receive training can learn how tomanipulate them at will to treat chronic pain, urinary inconti-nence, high blood pressure, tension headache, and migraineheadache.

Gonyea organized The Albany Peace Project because she is pas-sionate about teaching people how to garner the power of theirown mind to create positive change, both for themselves and oth-

Saratoga PLAN receives state awards topermanently protect two Saratoga CountyFarmsSaratoga PLAN is the recipient of grant awards from the stateFarmland Protection Implementation Program for the conserva-tion of two Saratoga County farms located in the towns ofStillwater and Ballston. The awards, announced earlier this weekby Governor Andrew Cuomo, are part of a $17.6 million pro-gram to protect 6,440 acres of farmland across 12 counties inNew York State. This was the first round of state agriculturalprotection grants awarded in six years. The grants will be usedto purchase and permanently retire development rights on thetwo farms, ensuring that their fertile fields will be available forfarming for future generations.

“The state funding is instrumental to our ability to undertakethese farmland conservation projects, which provide many long-term benefits to the community,” said Maria Trabka, SaratogaPLAN Executive Director. “The conservation of the Wm. H.Buckley Farm and Cocozzo Farm not only protects vital naturalresources, but enhances the region’s economic strength. NYSfarms can only feed 30% of its population now, and we’re losingfarms at a rate of two per week. Protecting these two farms willensure a secure source of locally produced food for the future, inthe fastest growing county in NYS.”

Additional funding partners for the conservation of this farm arethe Open Space Institute, contributing $260,000 and the Town ofStillwater, contributing an additional $22,000 towards this project.

Stress vs Anxiety – Stress develops when forces from theworld affect us in negative ways. Like life changes, nega-tive and positive events and daily challenges. Many of us

can deal with those things without experiencing long-term nega-tive effects. People with Anxiety Disorders, like GeneralAnxiety Disorder (GAD), experience constant physical and emo-tional affects on a regular daily basis. They worry about everyday problems like: their job; money; family; health; householdchores; their car; appointments; daily details, etc. They live inperpetual fear. GAD affects about 6.8 million Americans. Italso affects twice as many women as men. Some possible phys-ical symptoms of Anxiety are: headaches; heart palpitations;colon spasms, diarrhea/constipation; dry mouth; shallow breath-ing; frequent urination; sexual problems; aches and pains; trem-bling of the body (inside or outside); feeling “on edge”, impa-tient or irritable; poor concentration; forgetfulness; sleep prob-lems; hyper vigilance, etc. People with anxiety want to be “incharge” of their environments to reduce the fear they experience.Anxiety feels like a constant turbulent river running inside.

When I work with people with anxiety, I help them to understandanxiety is not their fault, and that it is caused by 4 factors:

• heredity • brain chemistry • personality • life experiences

Heredity and anxiety disorders:Research shows that anxiety disorders run in families. If youthink about your relatives, some may have behaviors that areannoying and unexplained, until you become aware that thecauses of their overreactions may be due to the fact that they livein fear. Many people who are: perfectionist types; abusedrugs/alcohol; seem controlling or angry; worry excessively;are shy or aggressive; restrict life; fear rejection; don’t feel safe;etc. may suffer from anxiety.

Brain chemistry and anxiety disorders:Because symptoms of anxiety disorders are often relieved bymedications that alter levels of chemicals in the brain, scientistsbelieve that brain chemistry appears to play a role in the onset ofanxiety disorders. I believe that some types of anxiety can bemanaged by using life-style change and symptom coping skills.

It is my opinion that medication should be given as a last resort, because all medications have side-effects.

Personality and anxiety disorders:Researchers believe that personality may play a role in the devel-opment of an anxiety disorder, noting that people who have lowself-esteem and poor coping skills may be more prone. If a per-son has an “easy going” temperament instead of an intense one, they will be able to deal with life in a calmer, more manageableway.

Life experiences and anxiety disorders:Researchers believe that the relationship between anxiety disor-ders and long-term exposure to abuse (physical, emotional, sex-ual); violence; rape; or poverty as a child or adult may affect anperson’s susceptibility to anxiety. Contributing factors could alsobe, if you had a childhood where your parent abused alcohol;were neglectful of you; abandoned you; or your parents had arelationship filled with conflict; etc.

Sub-personalities of people with anxietyThe Worrier (what if, what if) anticipates the worst scenario;overestimates the chances of something bad or embarrassinghappening; creates grandiose images of failure or catastrophe. The Critic: (promotes low self esteem) constantly judges andevaluates your behavior; points out flaws and limitations aboutyou; jumps on any mistake you make; compares you with others

performances and sees them excelling; ignores the positive qual-ities you have.

The Victim (promotes depression) sometimes feels helpless orhopeless; tells you that you’re not progressing; believes there issomething defective about you; perceives insurmountable obsta-cles to your success; believes nothing will ever change.

The Perfectionist: (promotes chronic stress & burnout) nags youto “do better” because your effort is not enough; hounds you towork harder, faster, longer, to be more productive; wants you tobe the best; intolerant of mistakes/setbacks; pushes you intoexhaustion and burnout over time.

Anxiety seldom disappears completely. Learning how to manageit can help you to feel empowered and “in charge” again. How To Tame The Anxiety:

• Take multiple B vitamins• Do yoga and/or bodywork• Recite positive self-statements throughout the day • Learn meditation and/or self-hypnosis• Focus on your good qualities and accomplishments • Exercise regularly by doing something you enjoy • Eliminate as much “simple sugar” and starches from your

diet as you can• Expect to feel uncomfortable from stressful situations • Talk with friends or someone you can trust about your

worries/problems • Recognize and accept your limits (remember we are all

unique and different)• When you choose specific tasks and goals, make sure

your expectations are reasonable

Talk therapy mostly addresses onlythe right side of the brain, so healing can be a lengthy process, andsometimes doesn’t integrate the trauma. Whereas, therapies such asHypnosis, interacts with the subconscious mind, and Eye MovementDesensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) address both hemispheres ofthe brain, so healing trauma is usually much quicker.

Sometimes it’s difficult to find the time for daily self-care to ease anx-iety. However, you are responsible for your well-being and youdeserve to be healthy. Because you have anxiety, you may have todevote more time and effort into Taming your anxiety than youthought, similar to a person with diabetes who has to take time dailyto plan meals, take blood sugar readings, etc. to maintain their health.Anxiety maintenance is similar. Set your intention to make time foryourself each day. Try actually writing your breathing breaks, self-hypnosis, exercise times and nightly wind-down time into your dailyplanner/palm pilot, to make sure you don’t schedule over your time. You are just as important as those other appointments. Rememberpeople with anxiety have a way of burning themselves up and outbecause they “drive” themselves into burnout at an early age, uncon-sciously. You deserve more than that. Be kind to yourself. Find timefor the self-care and your anxiety will decrease.

Whether your religious affiliations range from devout tononconventional, or even nonexistent, chances arethere will be some cause for gathering and celebration

between November and January. In spite of positive intentions tothe contrary, most of us have a fair number of holiday gatheringhang ups that threaten to turn the season of gratitude and goodcheer into the season of rumination over uncomfortable holidaydinner discussions that often begin with statements such as “Youknow your sister got another promotion….when are YOU goingto get a promotion?” or the much dreaded “oh, you will be com-ing to Thanksgiving Dinner ALONE again this year?” Here area few strategies to prepare you to keep you jolly and optimisticduring the dark- and sometimes difficult- holiday festivities.

Positive VisualizationYou are already using visualization. For instance, when thethought of going home for a family gathering gives way to a

soap-opera scene in your mind, playing out in Technicolor, bringing to life your worst-case-scenario fears of what relativesmight say because you are “still single” or “single again” or “stillat that job” or “still have that kid who is havingproblems”…..relax, breathe, and remind yourself that this mati-nee is only playing on your mind’s movie projector because youloaded the reel yourself.

Imagine yourself changing the reel to change the film to changethe scene. Practice actively taking charge of the scenes in yourmind on a regular basis. Whether in the start of the day or whenanxiety is rising, make it an intentional active practice of switch-ing the channel (or website etc.) to display a new scene. Let thisnew scene be a vivid representation of a harmonious gathering inwhich you are glowing, peaceful, confident, regardless of whatothers may say or do around you. We often fall into playing neg-ative scenes and visualizing worst case scenarios, but we canactively change the scene by changing the image in our minds.Rather than imagining attending the depressing holiday partieswithout a date by your side, picture yourself smiling, radiant andhaving a blast with friends all evening, perhaps even meeting anddancing with a new handsome stranger before the night is over….

Choose Peace for one dayIf opposing forces in WWI could set aside their machine guns, step out of the trenches, shake hands and play soccer for a day inhonor of the holiday spirit, why does it seem that for so many ofus relationships we’ve avoided all year round have to culminatein a battle ground around the holiday dinner table?

I will be the first to admit that I am stubborn and can save a

grudge like it was an interest bearing asset (sun in Cancer)although I strive to pick my battles, when feeling emotionallycharged, or morally self righteous, this can be a real challenge forme. I strive to set the agenda for peace and tolerance even if itmeans (gasp) others won’t know that they are wrong and I amright (at least according to me!) Even in the best of cases familygatherings can bring up old tensions and hostilities, old conflicts. To help promote peace amidst a collection of loved ones who mayat times trigger old emotional reaction switches, practice thesetips. Look for your love alliance at family gatherings. If a fewcousins or in-laws get under your skin, focus on connecting withcherished family members not often seen throughout the year. If ahouseful of children whose behavior makes your blood boilthreatens to dampen the holiday mood, focus on your connectionto family elders. Listen to their stories and bond with the agendaof having the peaceful gathering they deserve, regardless ofannoying distractions that may appear. On the other hand, ifdrama tends to emerge amongst adults at the dinner table, old fam-ily politics and power struggles, get immersed in the innocenceand enthusiasm of younger members of your family. Focus on theloving alliances in your family. The key is to ally with love, not inshared resentment creating triangles.

Connect With the Reason For the SeasonDevelop a personal anchor that keeps you connected to the spiri-tual or cultural importance of the celebration so that petty argu-ments and nuisances will be less likely to take hold. Whether thereason for the season is a Divine birth, welcoming of winter, oracknowledgement of survival through oppression, there is more tothe months ahead than a constant reason to shop, drink, eat and bestressed…er, merry. Remember the significance of the season andmake that your focus regardless of others’ foibles or faults. Youmay find it helpful to carry a personal token that grounds you inthe purpose of the festivities and reminds you of what you intendto celebrate.

Dealing with Criticism in DisguiseInvalidating or demeaning statements made by others and candycoated to sound like questions or concerns are another source ofdinner table discomfort for many women. Questions about rela-tionship status, or career that sound more like criticism than gen-uine inquiry can push buttons and dredge up self doubts. To copewith this, try to hear the emotion behind the question rather thantaking the question, or critique, at face value. For example, whenmom asks “are you still working that job with lousy benefits, because you know your sister just got a promotion at her compa-ny…” ask yourself if perhaps what mom is really conveying isgenuine fear or concern about your financial stability or well being.By responding to the emotion more rather than battling over thequestion, you can assuage mom’s concern by addressing the posi-tives about your job, thanking her for her concern, and outliningthe steps you have taken to grow your career via your own path.

Find Your FamilyComplaining about family tensions may seem a luxury to somewho for various reasons do not have a family with whom to cele-brate this season. If you are an enlightened woman on her own thisyear, your holiday stressors take a different form. Isolation anddepression can be detrimental to even the most savvy and inde-pendent modern women. Combine seasonal darkness with a con-stant onslaught of old memories as another year ends, and throwin a heaping spoonful of cultural pressure to be happily in love, maternal, and smiling, and many are left with a recipe for despair.Remember that stereotypes defining “family” are just that.Whether tv and media validate it or not, we all have family in theform of our closest alliances. Although holiday marketing doesnot target or even acknowledge some forms of family, being onyour own does not mean you have to be alone. My immediatefamily consists of my partner and our 6 furry children who lackopposable thumbs, nevertheless we have a family filled with love, and often amusement. If you are living alone and long to feel con-nected and celebrate with others, find your family. Perhaps it isyour community group, your animals, your neighbors, yourfriends, coworkers, the people who love you unconditionallyregardless of lack of shared DNA. Experience as a counselor inmental health and substance abuse recovery taught me to appreci-ate this. One of the happiest sights I have ever seen was the year-ly holiday party held by a mental health treatment agency Iworked for, serving people with severe, persistent and chronicmental illness who would have lived in institutions 10 years ago.The sight of 20 people gathered together bonded only by theirshared participation in this treatment program, many of whom hadno biological families around, most of whom seldom left thehouse throughout the year for any other reason, was amazing. These individuals would connect with each other on this occasionand for many this was the most socializing they would do for theyear, but they looked forward to it. An administrator in the pro-gram once asked a client at this event how they would spend theirholiday, to which the client replied “this is it.” If these otherwisedisconnected and disadvantaged individuals could find familyeven for one day out of the year in the company of their peers, anyof us can find family amongst our network. Avoid loneliness bynurturing your connections where they exist rather than focusingon the connections that no longer exist.

Foster Connection Another key to holiday harmony lies in nurturing good cheer andpeace. Harmony does not always blossom spontaneously whenpeople gather together as energy can be contagious and anger orsadness can impact the mood of a crowd. Nurturing peace andhappiness is an active process in relationships and can be fosteredby choosing to take the higher road. Not succumbing to argumentsor re-hashing old battles, and choosing to search for commonground are two simple ways to continue to build positive connec-tions. We all can find common ground, even amidst people we donot view as friends. This can be a challenge as differences of opin-ion are often emphasized to a greater degree than shared connec-tions. This season I challenge myself to regard those I encounteras potential allies, waiting for connection. This is not easy to do,as I recall all the reasons I give myself to feel adversarial toward

others whose politics, attitudes, and lifestyle I do not agreewith. Already, I am calling on the power of visualization, see-ing the WWI soldiers in my mind putting their weapons asideand shaking hands, reminding me through the legacy of thishistoric holiday truce that if they can set aside conflict andmake merry, I have absolutely no excuse.

Most people think that the causes of emotional pain are thethings that have hurt us in life, and that in order to healand experience real happiness we must resolve those old

wounds. The reality, however, is somewhat different. We can onlyfeel emotions, including the painful ones, in the present moment. What we feel in the present moment is determined by what wegive our attention to. Nothing can hurt you unless you give yourattention to it. Most people can make themselves cry in just a fewminutes by simply pulling up a vivid memory of something thatwas at the time painful. So why would we give our attention tothings that cause us pain? Most people are simply unaware thatthey are doing it and/or that there is any choice in the matter.Things outside your awareness are outside your control.

However, shifting your attention, once you are aware you can doit, is something you can have complete control over. You canchoose what you want to pay attention to in life, and as a resultyou can choose how you want to feel. Does that sound too easy? Here is a tool that will make it even easier. There are only twotypes of things in life that you can pay attention to that cause youto experience emotion: things you want and things you don’twant. Every single thing that you can think of that causes anytype of significant emotion can be sorted into one of those twocategories. Breakups, job loss, betrayal, death of a loved one —all things you don’t want; pets, best friends, birthday parties, get-ting a raise — all things you do want.

You will always know when you are giving your attention tothings that you don’t want in life, because your emotions will tellyou. Giving attention to things you don’t want generates nega-tive emotions, while giving attention to things you do want gen-

erates positive ones. When you realize that you are experiencinga negative emotion, recognize in that moment that you are giv-ing your attention to something unwanted and consciouslychoose to shift your attention to something you want instead. You will start to feel better almost immediately. This isn’t mere-ly avoidance; it is a proactive coping strategy that can give yougreater control over your life. One way to do this that we knowworks very well is to practice gratitude: things that you arethankful for are all wanted things in your life.

One of the most self-sabotaging things that people can give theirattention to is an unwanted future. Nothing in the future has actu-ally happened, yet many people spend a good deal of their timeexperiencing negative emotions like anxiety, fear, and self-doubtbecause they are giving their attention to things that they don’twant to occur. Doing this not only robs them of their present-moment happiness but prevents them from thinking about thepositive experiences they could instead be creating in their future.

Our attention is the gateway to what we experience in life.Learning to notice what you are paying attention to, and how toredirect your attention to things you want, can change not onlyyour current experience but the life you create for yourself goingforward.

REWILDING OUR HEARTS: BuildingPathways of Compassion and Coexistence. Here, the author, a leading expert on ani-mal behavior and emotions, provides animpassioned call to reverse global biodiversity and habitat loss by changingourselves.

In wildlife conservation work, rewildingrefers to habitat restoration and the cre-

ation of corridors between preserved lands to allow decliningpopulations to rebound. Marc Bekoff, one of the world’s mostengaging animal experts and activists, here applies rewilding tohuman attitudes. He argues that unless we rewild ourselves, becoming profoundly reconnected to nature and fundamentallyshifting our consciousness, our conservation efforts will have butlimited impact.

Bekoff says, “As I consider a more global and holistic perspec-tive, I go beyond my specific areas of expertise in ethology andcompassionate conservation to consider biology, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and anthropology. All of these, in fact, inform studies of animal behavior, animal minds, and conserva-tion biology, but they are not always acknowledged. I also speakas an activist arguing for social change. Ultimately, what we needis not more information about animals, but a social movementand revolution in how we interact with animals and nature.”

In the new book he discusses: • The Eight Ps of Rewilding as asocial movement (being proactive, positive, persistent, patient, peaceful, practical, powerful, and passionate) • IncorporatingRewilding in one’s day-to-day • How to become reenchantedwith nature — even if you live in Manhattan • How facing worldproblems can make our lives more meaningful and satisfying •How to stop ourselves from feeling overwhelmed when facingglobal crisis

Bekoff shows that as we transition to acting from the inside out,our efforts become powerfully proactive, moving beyond simplyreacting to current crises. Ultimately, REWILDING OURHEARTS invites readers to become reenchanted with the worldand, by dissolving false boundaries, to truly connect with bothnature and themselves.

Marc Bekoff is professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biolo-gy at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has worked alongsideleading writers and activists including Jane Goodall, Peter Singer, and PETA cofounder Ingrid Newkirk. He lives in Boulder, CO.

When I was in Peru this summer I spent the best part oftwo weeks scrambling up mountain trails after the stur-dy and nimble footed Quero shamans who were part of

our company, participating daily in ceremony which was an inte-gral part of their lifestyle. They live in intimate connection withnature: with the mountains, with the sky, with the earth. They usetheir breath to move the energy of prayer into stones, flowers, leaves - anything that can be held in their hand and worked intoprayer bundles that hold their gratefulness. The energy that arisesfrom these "despacho" ceremonies is palpable and ecstatic. Ibegan to understand how these people perceived the mountains, the clouds, the earth, as having consciousness and to experience asense of intimate relationship with nature, of being held. To expe-rience this in the boundless beauty of Peruvian mountain land-scapes triggered deep gratefulness as a natural response of mysoul. How could one resist feeling grateful, for the miracle ofhuman embodied life. A natural response, yes, but a response thatwas nurtured daily by practice.

Every time I open and close sacred space I both call in and saythank you: to the directions, to the great archetypal energies thatsurround, support, and inform us, to the planet, Gaia, the greatearth mother, to the sky, moon, stars, spirit, that overlight andguide us. “Calling in” acknowledges the potential of being in rela-tionship. I am not alone. Gratefulness is my hearts response:Thank you thank you thank you.

Altars are another way of coming into relationship with somethingor someone in a special way, to honor, to say thank you. Humanshave been making altars since the dawn of time. They have beencollecting bits and pieces of things, or images, or amulets, or mes-sages, and placing them with intention in a designated place inorder to honor, to appease, to channel communication. Childrendo this instinctively. They collect things that feel special to themand make little piles of them or put them in places that feel spe-cial to them. Many of us grew up in homes that had a photo cor-ner of important relatives. My mother has an ancestor wall, a wallthat served as a photo gallery of relatives both dead and alive, including a beloved pet. Now I smile and say thank you when Ipass that wall.

As a Canadian I was inspired to experience the dedication andenthusiasm with which Americans celebrate their Thanksgivingholiday. It was explained to me that in this "melting pot" cultur-al environment it is the one holiday everyone can celebrate togeth-er. This holiday is a unifier. We have the infrastructure for prac-

ticing gratefulness in our culture. You might be inspired toexcavate the practice of saying grace before a meal. Many stilldo this. It is a great time, supported by the energy of a traditionfamiliar to most of us, to sat thank you - thank you for all of it,thank you for the opportunity, one more time, to sing the song oflife.

In difficult times whether they be individual, personal, or col-lective, a practice of gratefulness is healing in that it fosters theexperience of positive connection to people and things. In neu-rological language, it activates the ventral vagal nervous system. When we are emotionally highjacked by circumstances, by oth-ers, by our own thoughts, we need ways to re-set our nervoussystems and calm down, get sane again. Practicing gratefulnessis one of the ways we can do this.

The Webster Dictionary defines aura as a “gentle breeze”,“an invisible breath or emanation”. Donna Eden, theauthor of the Best Selling book “Energy Medicine” com-

ments that, “Like the Earth’s atmosphere, the aura surrounds andenvelops the body. It is the body’s outermost energy system, com-posed of seven layers or “nested auric fields” (think of Russiandolls) and seven concentric bands from the bottom to the top ofthe body. Each layer and each band serves a different function—but ultimately the aura acts as: 1) a filter to protect the body fromtoxic or disruptive energies, and 2) an antenna bringing in benefi-cial energies… The proper functioning of the aura greatly impactsphysical, emotional, and spiritual health.” In other words, asreflected by Donna Eden”your aua is your body’s body guard”

Eden Energy Medicine is the study of the nine subtle energy sys-tems in the human body. They are the Aura, Chakras, Meridians, the Five Rhythms, the Electrics, Basic Grid, Celtic Weave, TripleWarmer, and the Radiant Circuits. As an acupuncturist, I wasaware of the other energy systems but worked solely with theMeridian system. We were taught about the life force Qi (pro-nounced chee) but not about the aura. Over the 12 years of prac-ticing acupuncture I became increasingly aware of the workDonna Eden was doing. Three years ago, quite by chance, I wasinvited to study her work and the journey began. When the firstclass started I had a vague idea of what an aura was: the area sur-rounding the body that is sometimes depicted in paintings ofsaints as a radiant halo. More than that was a mystery.

• The aura bridges these energies to the chakras and otherenergy centers (which further process them, often resultingin nerve, hormonal, vascular, and other activity in thephysical body).

• The aura sends signals into your environment that communi-cate information about you and that attract specific typesof energy to you.

• The aura holds a set of interrelated fields that are the blue-prints for your physical body, your emotions, your aware-ness, your relationships, and your development.”

With these basics I had a conceptual idea of how an aura functionedin our lives, but no practical, understanding. I have been totallyamazed that in clinical practice what one needs to learn tends towalk through the door in the form of clients presenting with thosevery issues. There was a lot to learn and true to form, the perfectclients presented to teach me about the aura. There is one case inparticular I thought you might find interesting, as it brought the aurato life for me and hopefully will do the same for you.

My third year of clinical training involved working with clientswhile a mentor watched via Skype. In one particular session I wasworking with someone who struggled with speaking up for him-self and felt that people didn’t pay attention to him. Almost feel-ing invisible in certain respects. In the past I had considered work-ing with his aura, but had always deferred to the meridians toaddress physical symptoms. During this session, my mentor sawthat his aura was “thin and weak” and suggested doing Figure 8’sto strengthen it. Figure 8?s are a fundamental pattern which ourenergetic bodies are based upon. One of the ways of maintainingthe health of the aura is to trace Figure 8?s large and small all overthe body. I spent 45 minutes weaving Figure 8?s in every wayimaginable. I have to confess, at the time, I thought it was a bitover the top. However, as he later reported, when he returnedhome his family noticed a distinctly stronger presence, and had abit of an adjustment to accommodate his new energy. Part of myself-care assignment for him was to continue doing Figure 8?s inthe aura on a daily basis. Roughly six months after this session, hereported that all the problematic life issues he had been experi-encing had magically resolved themselves. I was stunned; lessonlearned!

In order to understand what happened we apply the functions of theaura to the changes in my client’s life. If the aura is truly our body

guard, it will filter out energies that are detrimental, and bring sup-portive, nourishing energy to us. An aura that is “thin and weak”will allow aggressive events to penetrate our lives, while a strongaura will naturally align us with circumstances and events that sup-port our well-being and highest potential. In my client’s case, wesee the aura’s intelligence at work resolving unsatisfying life cir-cumstances. After intensive efforts to rebuild the integrity of hisaura, it began to work its silent magic to bring about the energeticchanges needed to have him be more present and assertive in hislife. This on its own would contribute to significant relationalchanges, but his aura was still on the job not only filtering outaggressive energy in all areas of his life, but also pulling in unfore-seen circumstances that significantly improved the quality of hislife and harmony experienced in his relationships.

What I learned from this is just how powerful and intelligent theaura is in helping to create happy, fulfilling lives and relation-ships. If we extend this function just a bit further, isn’t it possiblethe aura functions as part of our spiritual anatomy, as we seedepicted in the artistry of our saints? With some work we too havethe potential to have a radiant halo! After all, isn’t that our highest calling?

Several years ago, after training in an energy modality calledThetaHealing, I was taught how to scan a person’s bodyand give a reading of the chakras and energy. After several

months of using this method, my readings opened up, and I foundthat through my natural love of writing, I was able to receive intu-itive messages about a person when I wrote them out. When I dothe automatic writing, all I need is someone’s name, and I connectwith Higher Self consciousness, and detailed information comesthrough on the person I am reading, providing guidance and clar-ity on all of life’s mysteries- big or small. This column is a sam-ple the higher perspectives that are available to us all. If youwould like the opportunity to recieve a reading, write in withquestions about your personal experiences and we will print it.

Reading....Thank you for this interaction today. We are grateful for theopportunity to communicate with you all. It is important for youto know, that although you may believe that you are the one ask-ing questions, and receiving information, or that you are the one

benefiting from the perspective of Higher Self Consciousness, intruth, We from Higher Self Consciousness are learning andexpanding with you, through these interactions. For every timethere is a shift in consciousness, no matter how small or individ-ual the shift, it sets a wake across the totality of UniversalConsciousness. Every opportunity to tap into a higher awarenessis a moment of expansion. For Us, and for you- because there isno real separation between the two. So, thank you, for your will-ingness to be part of the expanding consciousness. We say thisfor you to acknowledge and own your personal role in spiritualawakening- you are not just the receivers of higher awareness, you are the activators of it. This is a partnership, a co-creation.The non-physical realm and the physical realm are workingtogether for this spiritual awakening- do not discredit yourselvesand think that you are less powerful, less insightful, “less” in anyway. The only separation between you and Us, Us being HigherSelf Consciousness, is that you believe yourself to be less thanyou are. You are an aspect of Source Energy, God, TheUniverse- the title makes no difference. We in the non-physicalknow what We are, so there is no separation. That knowing isavailable to you as well.

What is intuition? How can I tap into it?

Intuition is this knowing. It is the allowing of your natural connec-tion to Source. Yes, it can be developed in ways that allow some toperform unique talents of multi-dimensional/ extra-sensory com-munications- but that is a more advanced variation of an innateability. intuition. Everyone has intuition- and uses it on a dailybasis. It is such a natural part of your life, that you have forgottenthe magic and mystery of it. You may have played it down withwords such as “coincidence,” or resorted to beliefs that rationalizecertain events. Human kind has minimized intuition because it hasnot been captured or confined by scientific data or measurements.Intuition is the way that you and Source communicate with oneanother; there is no way to measure that, because it is limitless, infi-nite- and purely unique from one person to the next.

If you wish to reconnect with your intuition, to communicatewith Source, begin to bring back the moments of awe and won-der in your life. Start looking at your life with the wondermentof Source- when you look at a flower, take a moment to BE withit. Explore it with all of your senses. Feel it inside of you, see it’s

beauty with the eyes of a child; hear it-open all of yourself up to the

experience- be fully pres-ent with the flower. Thisis a powerful meditation

practice, as well as away to realign

with the fascina-tion and curios-ity that is your

natural state. If youwish to be a channel for

Source, you must put

yourself in the frequency of Source. When you focus your atten-tion on the ramblings of the ego/ personality, then your experi-ence will reflect those uncertainties. If you wish to communicateand be guided by Source, through intuition, then you must beginto know yourself as that. This is a practice, learned as layers arepulled back and more space revealed- so be gentle with yourself. You are your most direct route to the divine, so honor how youshow up. Feel what you must feel, accept it with love and com-passion. There have been lifetimes of separation and self-depre-ciating beliefs that must be cleared and replaced. Every realiza-tion, every clearing, opens up space for you to refocus youralignment with Source, to replace the fear with love and com-passion. Intuition guides all of this. It is so much an active partof you already that you don’t even acknowledge it’s presence. Tohear it more clearly, We invite you to direct your focus to yourconnection with Source- with the light and love that you are, which is your natural state.

Thank you for communicating with Us today. We are grateful foryour openness. Many blessings.

Ah…the sweet smells of the holiday season! What is yourfavorite sweet-smelling spice? Many of my clients havecinnamon, ginger, or that amazing golden hero, turmeric at

the top of their lists. These are all beneficial and perfect for spicingup holiday treats! They all possess potent compounds that can sup-port the immune system and may decrease inflammation. Thismonth, I got the opportunity to try my newest sidekick essential oil.I started diffusing it and smelling it daily. It had me at “Yummo!”So, the nerd that I am, I started my journey into research articleswith PubMed and Dr. Google (Scholar). I now have some valida-tion for my fondness of this essential oil and I am eager to learnmore as natural medicine gets its rightful place in research studies.

Here are the 10 reasons why you should consider adding nutmeg to“spice up” your life (you can access the full abstracts on my website):

1. It Is Promising forBrain SupportSeveral studies have demonstrated that nutmeg may have an abilityto modulate the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme which isthought to be involved with memory. The first abstract demonstrat-ed the most activity with an extract of nutmeg on this enzyme vers-es the second comparison study. This may be due to the first study’smethods of isolation and analysis of various compounds in nutmeg.

2. For Healthy MoodSupport…Of Mood & MiceIn an old mice study which studied constituents in nutmeg, myristicinhad an effect of increasing the concentration of the brain happy aminoacid, 5-hydorxyytrupatamine (a precursor to serotonin). Furthermore, other components appeared to cause nervous system stimulation.

Nutmeg and its active component, myristicin, show evidence ofcentral monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibition by their ability tolower the convulsive dose of intravenous tryptamine in mice andto increase rat brain 5-hydroxytryptamine concentrations. Theyalso show some ability to antagonize reserpine-induced ptosis ofthe eyelids. Myristicin is chemically unique as a nitrogen-freeMAO inhibitor. Although its potency in this respect is not com-parable to some of the more potent inhibitors such as tranyl-

cypromine and iproniazid, it seems quite adequate when com-pared to its low toxicity. Other volatile components of nutmegsuch as borneol, geraniol and safrole, do not show tryptaminepotentiation, although some appear to cause C.N.S. stimulation inhigh doses. Further study is recommended for more direct evi-dence of nutmeg and myristicin as enzyme inhibitors and for theirutility as anti-depressant drugs.

3. It May HelpMitochondria Revive! Our mitochondria are known as “cellular powerhouses” for ener-gy production in our bodies. This abstract aimed to study themolecular mechanisms underlying the activity of a component innutmeg, myristicin. It demonstrated that this component couldmodulate gene expression in human leukemia cells. The geneexpression profile revealed an overall down- regulation of DNAdamage response genes after exposure to myristicin.

Myristicin, an allylbenzene, is a major active component of vari-ous spices, such as nutmeg and cinnamon, plants from theUmbelliferae family or in some essential oils, such as oils of cloveor marjoram. Human exposure to myristicin is low but widespreaddue to consumption of these spices and essential oils, added tofood (e.g. cola drinks) or in traditional medicine. Occasionallyhigh dose exposure occurs, leading to various clinical symptoms, however the molecular mechanisms underlying them areunknown. Our previous studies revealed that myristicin is notgenotoxic and yet presented apoptotic activity. Therefore, in thiswork we assessed the apoptotic mechanisms induced by myris-ticin in human leukaemia cells. In order to gain further insight onthe potential of myristicin to modulate gene expression we alsoanalysed alterations in expression of 84 genes associated with theDNA damage response pathway. The results obtained show thatmyristicin can induce apoptosis as characterised by alterations inthe mitochondrial membrane potential, cytochrome c release, cas-pase-3 activation, PARP-cleavage and DNA fragmentation. Thegene expression profile revealed an overall down regulation ofDNA damage response genes after exposure to myristicin, withsignificant under-expression of genes associated with nucleotideexcision repair (ERCC1), double strand break repair (RAD50,RAD51) and DNA damage signalling (ATM) and stress response(GADD45A, GADD45G). On the whole, we demonstrate thatmyristicin can alter mitochondrial membrane function, induceapoptosis and modulate gene expression in human leukaemiaK562 cells. This study provides further detail on the molecularmechanisms underlying the biological activity of myristicin.

4. It’s All About thePhenols, BabyOh, poor nutmeg! It has been way under looked for its ability toscavenge free radicals which are associated with cellular damage. In a menthol extract, nutmeg had a lot of antioxidant power.Nutmeg demonstrated activity as a free radical scavenger, anantioxidant capacity for peroxyl and hydroxyl radical, and somephenolic activity. (Phenols have immune modulating properties.)One drawback in this study was that the extraction method couldhave altered the active constituents activity.

5. For SupportingHealthy TeethIn petri dishes, nutmeg inhibited nasty cavity-forming bacteria. The occurrence of dental caries is mainly associated with oralpathogens, especially cariogenic Streptococcus mutans.Preliminary antibacterial screening revealed that the extract ofMyristica fragrans, widely cultivated for the spice and flavor offoods, possessed strong inhibitory activity against S. mutans.

6. Liver SupportIn a study with our rodent friends, myristicin suppressed inflam-matory markers and showed evidence that it may protect livercells from damage caused by lipopolyscarrarides (LPS) plus d-galactosamine. (Yuck, I dislike the damaging microbial LPSplus sugar toxin test, but it must be done!)

To evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of spices, 21 differentspices were fed to rats with liver damage caused by lipopolysac-charide (LPS) plus d-galactosamine (D-GalN). As assessed byplasma aminotranferase activities, nutmeg showed the mostpotent hepatoprotective activity. Bioassay-guided isolation ofthe active compound from nutmeg was carried out in mice by asingle oral administration of the respective fractions. Myristicin, one of the major essential oils of nutmeg, was found to possessextraordinarily potent hepatoprotective activity. Myristicinmarkedly suppressed LPS/D-GalN-induced enhancement ofserum TNF-? concentrations and hepatic DNA fragmentation inmice. These findings suggest that the hepatoprotective activity ofmyristicin might be, at least in part, due to the inhibition of TNF-? release from macrophages. However, further studies are need-ed to elucidate the hepatoprotective mechanism(s) of myristicin.

7. For That FriskyFeelingSpeaking of mice, it seems nutmeg made these critters a littlefrisky when combined with clove. This was according toresearchers who were assigned this interesting research topic andnoted the mice’s behavior. Background: Spices are considered assexual invigorators in the Unani System of Medicine. In order toexplore the sexual function improving effect of Myristica fra-grans Houtt. (nutmeg) and Syzygium aromaticum (L) Merr. &Perry. (clove) an experimental study was conducted in normalmale mice.

8. It may help withPoopAccording to an old case study in the British Medical Journal, nutmeg helped a patient who was having diarrhea (the British say“diarrhoea”) related to various medical issues. This was from anold case report in 1975! In a patient with medullary carcinomaof the thyroid with pulmonary metastases who presented withdiarrhoea and steatorrhoea large amounts of prostaglandin-likematerial were present in peripheral blood, and some was extract-ed from the tumour. The diarrhoea which persisted after thy-roidectomy responded to treatment with nutmeg.

9. It May Help YourPaw Inflammation andSticky Blood ActionOne study showed that nutmeg has action on enzymes involvedin inflammatory pathways using mice subjects. It helped withtheir little paw-induced inflammation.

The chloroform extract of nutmeg has been evaluated for antiin-flammatory, analgesic and antithrombotic activities in rodents. The extract inhibited the carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema, produced a reduction in writhings induced by acetic acid in miceand offered protection against thrombosis induced byADP/adrenaline mixture in mice.

10. It’s Darn Safe As DirectedSo, some people have heard of “nutmeg toxicity”. I searched for thisand found only one fatal case that was ASSOCIATED with nutmegoverdose which was in 2001. MAJOR CAVEAT to this finding-thefatality was associated with a combination of nutmeg and fluni-trazepam, a benzodiazepine. So was it the myristicin in nutmeg orthe drug? The study reports it was likely due to a combination.

However, keep in mind that the British Medical Journal reportedthe following in 2012: “Receiving hypnotic prescriptions wasassociated with greater than threefold increased hazards of deatheven when prescribed <18 pills/year. This association held inseparate analyses for several commonly used hypnotics and fornewer shorter-acting drugs. Control of selective prescription ofhypnotics for patients in poor health did not explain the observedexcess mortality.”

So, what do you think? Are you going to add some variety toyour spice and oil cabinet now?

by Ann Carey Tobin, MD

Recently I have taken advantage of some long commutesto listen to a book on tape, one loaned to me by a friend“only” four months ago. Not only am I relieved that she

may get this book back within the year, but I have gained a use-ful addition to my bibliotherapy library. Lissa Rankin, M.D. isyet another physician who experienced spectacular burn out, andeventually healed herself by attending to her inner healer. For herthis necessitated leaving medicine, liquidating all assets, andmoving to the country with her husband and young daughter.Surrounded by natural beauty she cared for herself, her family, and passionately pursued her painting hobby. Two years later shefelt called to return to her profession, and found that her healingcontinued when she took her place in the supportive environmentof an Integrative medicine practice. Dr. Rankin also began toblog, where she found her “tribe” of the like-minded, and grewinto the conviction that the mind is the key to optimizing healthand wellness. Inspired, and now driven, she delved into the sci-entific research to shed light on the mind-body relationship, andvalidate her theory. The result is her book, ‘Mind OverMedicine, Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself.’

Dr. Rankin discusses the science behind the power of thoughtsand emotions, and details how stress, in its many forms, affectreal changes in our body. And, of course, she provides advice onhow to harness the mind to benefit our mind, body and spirit. Herresearch and insight resonates with me as an individual, and as aphysician. I have known for a long time that fear frequentlykeeps my patients from embracing the life changes required toopen a space for deep and lasting healing. Dr. Rankin suggestsengaging in a dialogue with your body and asking it “what doyou need to heal?” A honest discussion may provide simple and

common sense feedback: eat whole foods, exercise, get morerest, manage stress, nurture relationships; but, the conversation isprobably not complete without also addressing the role of mean-ing and purpose in your life.

Finding meaning and purpose in one’s life is a keystone to thriv-ing as a human being. It is tempting to define this in the terms ofroles–assigned, acquired, or simply fallen into: parent, profes-sional, artist, etc. And, while those roles often define and serveus in some measure, fulfillment of your meaning and purpose– aprocess that holds the promise of healing, may involve an ele-ment of risk and change–scary change. It means a commitmentto engaging in contemplative, honest conversations with yourauthentic self; via meditation, prayer, quiet time, journaling, orother copacetic avenues. And, for many of us, it is an evolution-ary process, taking place over time and in phases. As I tell mypatients: baby steps are just fine. We can not overestimate, though, the healing power of this inner journey, and of makingthe difficult decisions to ultimately follow our soul’s purpose. AsMary Oliver invites us to ponder: “Tell me, what is it you plan todo with your one wild and precious life?” This is an invitation totake the journey inwards, to optimize your health and wellness, and to age gracefully. Be well.

QI have been under a doctor's care for a condition thatis covered by my health insurance, even though I wouldprefer to have used alternative methods, but the cost is

always a factor. What are your opinions about one versus theother, or even combining the two?

Homeopathy; Jerome PindellAlternatives do not mean that one needs to take one method overanother, or that one is better than another, although I often findmy soap box sturdily supports that latter notion. When you haveneed of western medicine, you should certainly avail yourself oftheir skills and make good use of the insurance coverage.

The problem arises when the western approach falls short of theability to provide supportive energies to your healing, or in somecases, involves more negative consequences than the apparentrelief that is offered in the short term. Alternatives can often filla gap where traditional therapeutics may only offer palliative orsuppressive measures, which, when viewed over the long term,do more damage than good.

The real value can only be measured in the quality of the healththat you desire. If health is to be viewed only in economic terms, then you are outside the realm of my ability to offer you anexplanation of why alternative therapies are cost effective in thelong term. If you measure health by the long term quality of yourliving life fully, then you can use traditional western approacheswhen they are appropriate and alternative ones when they fityour long term desires, or combine the two when that feelsappropriate.

Jerome M Pindell uses Homeopathy, Hypnosis, Jin Shin Jyutsuand spiritual counseling to assist his clients. He is a poet whosefirst book: Training Tracks, poems by implosion, is availablethrough Amazon. He has offices in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, andNYC. He can be reached @ 518-374-5492 or his web [email protected]

Homeopathy; Claudia AscioneWe are living in a time where there are many rich options foroptimizing health through the thoughtful inclusion of comple-ments to allopathic medical approaches. Although not alwayscovered by insurance, these options with a focus on preventionand immune support are prudent additions for wellness. The tra-ditional Western medical approaches can and should be thought-

fully combined and integrated with the alternative methods.

Allopathic and alternative methods are based on different beliefparadigms. Traditional allopathic approaches have a materialis-tic orientation with an emphasis on the physical body.Alternative or complementary approaches such as homeopathyand energy treatments such as Jin Shin Jyutsu appreciate theexistence of the emotional, spiritual, and subtle, non-physicalaspects as well as the physical.

It is important to make responsible choices and to reflect deeplyon what resonates with you. Pursue health options that appreci-ate the innate power and wisdom of your body, mind and spirit, ones that acknowledge the divine design of the human being. Ifyou follow your truth and support your health by choosing alter-natives that have this orientation, the return may well exceed theresources used. You may stay stronger and healthier and avoidextensive medical costs in the future.

Claudia Ascione, MA. MS. CH. is a practitioner in the healingarts of homeopathy , spiritual counsel, hypnosis, regression andJin Shin Jyutsu. She uses a deeply intuitive and spiritualapproach to bring awareness and clarity to healing concerns. She offers private sessions in Niskayuna, Manhattan andArdsley, NY. For more information or to schedule a session, please call (518) 372-7023.

Acupuncture; Gregg St ClairWhen I started practicing acupuncture in 1998, it was not cov-ered by any insurance and no one expected it to be. That didn’tprevent me from having a full booming practice where everyonepaid out of their own pocket for care. The typical patients I seehave tried everything from drugs to surgery with western medi-cine and were not getting the results they wished so were active-ly seeking out alternatives for relief. Many have heard ofacupuncture’s success with pain and were desperate for help sousually money wasn’t an issue.

Today, I must admit everything has changed. Every patient thatcalls now wants to know if acupuncture is covered, and manyaren’t willing to pay for it if not. I think the problems with theeconomy in 2005 and 2008, uncertainty over the new nationalhealth care plans, plus huge gas price increases and inflationhave created fear in the marketplace so people have checkedtheir spending. Of course money is an issue, but my experienceis we pay for what we value and most people that are motivatedalways find a way to come in.

The question is; what do you value? Unfortunately when moneyis an issue, people often put their health care last. The house, carand entertainment come first, but from my perspective, you can’tafford not to put your health first. If you would prefer using alter-native methods, you have to find a way to make it work. I oncehad a woman come to me and flat out said, “I can’t afford to payyou but I know I need to be here. I can paint, or babysit or mowyour lawn in payment.” This is exactly the type of patient prac-

titioners love to work with because they are motivated to do thework and not looking to merely be fixed.

I have never turned any one away because of money and alwaysfound a way to work it out. If money is an issue, talk to your healthcare provider and you might be surprised. Perhaps you could geta discount or establish a payment plan. The good news is moreinsurance companies are starting to reimburse for acupuncture. Iam a provider for Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and they havefantastic benefits. I’m also a provider for CDPHP but they coveralmost nothing (though supposedly that will change in the future).Call your insurance company and find out, the more demand theysee the more it will change in the future. The majority of mypatients though, pay out of pocket, and I’ve been seeing them foryears usually one time a month for prevention, maintenance andoverall well being.

Don’t hesitate to combine the traditional and alternative therapies. Most of my patients are also using western medicine for theirhealth, though many are looking for ways to make natural thera-pies their first line of defense. If you are not getting your needsmet with your current health care and suffering physically or men-tally, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to seek help. Andthat’s why we’re here.

Wild GeeseYou do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean

blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.
