2. So Far
We have looked at what the Hubble Space Telescope is.
Discovered Hubbles accomplishments.
Found out how it works.
Read over the mission, vision, goals, and objectives.
3. Now
We are going to look at a major flaw in the spacecraft.
How the flaw was created and what it does to the spacecraft.
How engineers and scientists were able to overcome this problem
prior to the permanent fix.
What the permanent fix was and how it works.
4. Here is a little known fact for all you engineers.
Do you really think you need expensive equipment to figure out a
problem?
When Hubble was put on orbit they had a problem getting the high
gain antenna to extend into place and lock.
Using some string, tape, a rubber band, and a tongue depressor they
theorized that a cable had moved into the joint of the antenna and
keeping the antenna from locking.
They simply retracted the arm all the way and extended it again and
this time it locked.
True story.
