Connecting the AVReceiver
Connecting the Speaker Cables
The following illustration shows how to connect thespeakers to each pair of terminals.
Screw-type speaker terminals
Strip 1/2" to 5/8" (12 to 15 mm) of insulation from the endsof the speaker cables, and twist the bare wires tightly, as
shown.
Banana Plugs (North American models)
If you are using banana plugs, tighten the speaker
terminal before inserting the banana plug. Do not insert the speaker code directly into the centerhole of the speaker terminal.
Speaker Configuration
The following table indicates the channels you should usedepending on the number of speakers that you have.No matter how many speakers you use, a poweredsubwoofer is recommended for a really powerful and solid
bass.To get the best from your surround sound system, you needto set the speaker settings automatically ( page 30) ormanually ( page 46).
Attaching the Speaker Cable Labels
The speaker terminals are color-coded for identificationpurpose.
The supplied speaker cable labels are also color-coded andyou should attach them to the positive (+) side of each
speaker cable in accordance with the table above. Then allyou need to do is to match the color of each label to thecorresponding speaker terminal.
Note
With the Home Theater System, speaker cable labels are notsupplied.

Speaker Connection Precautions
Read the following before connecting your speakers: You can connect speakers with an impedance of between
6 and 16 ohms. If you use speakers with a lowerimpedance, and use the amplifier at high volume levels
for a long period of time, the built-in amp protectioncircuit may be activated.
Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet beforemaking any connections.
Read the instructions supplied with your speakers. Pay close attention to speaker wiring polarity. In other
words, connect positive (+) terminals only to positive (+)terminals, and negative () terminals only to negative ()
terminals. If you get them the wrong way around, thesound will be out of phase and will sound unnatural.
Unnecessarily long, or very thin speaker cables mayaffect the sound quality and should be avoided.
Be careful not to short the positive and negative wires.Doing so may damage the AV receiver.
Make sure the metal core of the wire does not havecontact with the AV receivers rear panel. Doing so may
damage the AV receiver.
Dont connect more than one cable to each speakerterminal. Doing so may damage the AV receiver.
Dont connect one speaker to several terminals.
Using a Powered Subwoofer
To find the best position for your subwoofer, while playinga movie or some music with good bass, experiment byplacing your subwoofer at various positions within theroom, and choose the one that provides the most satisfyingresults.
Tip
If your subwoofer is unpowered and youre using an externalamplifier, connect the subwoofer pre out jack to an input on the
amplifier.

Connecting AV components
a
Before making any AV connections, read the manuals
supplied with your AV components. Dont connect the power cord until youve completed and
double-checked all AV connections. Push plugs in all the way to make
good connections (loose connectionscan cause noise or malfunctions).
To prevent interference, keep audioand video cables away from power
cords and speaker cables.
AV Cables and Jacks
HDMI
HDMI connections can carry digital video and audio.
Component video
Component video separates the luminance (Y) and colordifference signals (PB, PR), providing the best picturequality (some TV manufacturers label their componentvideo sockets slightly differently).
Composite video
Composite video is commonly used on TVs, DVDs, andother video equipment.
Optical digital audio
Optical digital connections allow you to enjoy digitalsound such as PCM*1, Dolby Digital or DTS. The audioquality is the same as coaxial.
Coaxial digital audio
Coaxial digital connections allow you to enjoy digitalsound such as PCM*1, Dolby Digital or DTS. The audioquality is the same as optical.
Analog audio (RCA)
Analog audio connections (RCA) carry analog audio.
*1 For PCM signals, the supported sampling rates are32/44.1/48/88.2/96 kHz. With HDMI connections, 176.4 and192 kHz are also supported.
Note
The AV receiver does not support SCART plugs. The AV receivers optical digital jacks have shutter-type covers
that open when an optical plug is inserted and close when itsremoved. Push plugs in all the way.
Caution
To prevent shutter damage, hold the optical plug straightwhen inserting and removing.

Menu HDMI Input
If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, youmust assign that input to an input selector. For example, ifyou connect your Blu-ray Disc/DVD player to HDMI IN 2,you must assign HDMI2 to the BD/DVD inputselector. Here are the default assignments.
BD/DVD, CBL/SAT, GAME, PC, AUX, TV/CD
`HDMI1, HDMI2, HDMI3, HDMI4, HDMI5,HDMI6:
Select the input to which the component has beenconnected.

Each HDMI input cannot be assigned to two inputselectors or more. When HDMI1 - HDMI6 have already
been assigned, you must first set any unused inputselectors to - - - - - or you will be unable to assignHDMI1 - HDMI6 to other input selectors.
HDMI input is assigned), the AV receiver selects the videosource based on the setting ofComponent (Component VideoInput).
When an HDMI IN is assigned to an input selector as explained
here, the same HDMI IN will be set as a priority in the DigitalAudio ( page 46). In this case, if you want to use the coaxialor optical audio input, make the appropriate selection in theAudio Selector setting ( page 50).
Do not assign an HDMI IN to the TV/CD selector while HDMICtrl (RIHD) is set to On ( page 52), otherwiseappropriate CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) operation willnot be guaranteed.
If you assign - - - - - to an input selector that is currently
selected in HDMI Through (
page 52), the HDMIThrough setting will be automatically switched to Off.
