In 2012, after three years of illusion and work, the HTC Abo Korkas opens its doors with a markedly social objective of offering a development opportunity to underprivileged people with few resources of the El Minya region. At the same time it has a business vision which is to provide the qualified professionals that the tourism and hospitality industry of Egypt is demanding.The training that HTC Abo Korkas offers will allow students to acquire the values, attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary in the hotel world and will open the doors to their future. Let us welcome HTC Abo Korkas, and we hope that you will want to be part of this Project. We aspire to not only increase the quality of the Egyptian hotel industry which is constantly growing, but also to support the growth of Egypt itself by offering new options for the future to those who need it most.

The ProjectThe Project HTC Abo Korkas was conceived in the year 2009, as an initiative between the Foreign Office of Spain, through the International Spanish Agency for Development (AECID) and the Egyptian Tourism Ministry. The objective was to take advantage of the continuing touristic growth and the demand for qualified professionals to consolidate an aid project for the economic and employment development in El Minya, one of the most disadvantaged regions of the country. In order to do this, the Project has counted with the Centro Superior de Hostelería de Galicia (CSHG), one of the most prestigious European centres of hospitality management training, to design the facilities and for the selection and training of the teachers. The Centro will also certify the degrees as it developed the curriculum together with the Egyptian Tourism Federation (ETF) in order to ensure that on the one hand the students would become professionally qualified and on the other that their training would fit the real needs of the Egyptian hotel industry. All of this is sponsored by the Association of Upper Egypt for Education and Development (AUEED), one of the most prestigious NGO’s in the country and owner of the building where the school is located, in order to achieve the following objectives: Promote the economic and employment development in the Upper Egypt among the most disadvantaged social classes. Reinforce the training and job integration for womenOffer qualified professionals for the Egyptian hotel sector.

Tourism and Hospitality

Tourism is one of the most important economic activities in the world. It is also the main vehicle for cultural exchange. In addition, in developing countries with a touristic profile it creates a favorable situation which allows for cooperation projects that promote economic and cultural growth. Egypt fits this profile.From an economic point of view, since 1980 due to the implementation of new tourism regulations and development plans to diversify tourism, tourism has risen to represent 25% of the income from foreign exchange and 18% of the GNP. This is due to not only to the tourism attracted by Egypt’s valuable historic heritage but also by creating new tourist products in the desert, Red Sea or the Sinai Peninsula, among others.These figures are generated by an annual volume

of 13 million tourists which translates to nearly 130 million overnight stays and have permitted the creation of more than 150,000 jobs. This tourism growth has provoked an increment in the lodging offer of more than 42% in the last years, reaching 210,847 beds in the year 2009.From the cooperation point of view this growth in tourism has generated a demand for more qualified professionals. This situation, together with the economic and employment needs in disadvantaged regions like El Minya with a population of around 500,000, makes projects like the HTC Abo Korkas sensible. With satisfactory results in the short run and at the same time creating new opportunities for the future in this region it offers the hospitality industry the professionals that a destination with the cultural heritage of Egypt needs to be able to offer and precisely one that the ston cannot provide: quality of service that will ensure a competitive future for the destination.

Location and Surroundings

The HTC Abo Korkas is located in Abo Korkas El Balad, a small town of some 20,000 inhabitants, situated in the region of El Minya and 20 kilometres from the capital with the same name.El Minya Governorate and, therefore, the main area of influence of the HTC Abo Korkas, is made up of 9 localities, 57 local administrative units, 346 towns and 1,429 villages which represent 5.1% of the total population of Egypt with a total of 4.2 million inhabitants.El Minya is known as the ‘bride of Upper Egypt’, due to its strategic position between the Upper and Lower Egypt. To travel to El Minya and Abo Korkas from the north (Alexandria 454 km, Cairo 225 km., the areas of the delta and some towns of the Sinai peninsula like Sharm El Sheikh 824 km.) as well as from the south (Aswan 635 km., Luxor 424 km. and areas of Upper Egypt) the trip can be made in train as both places have a train station or by car as both are connected with the main cities by the west highway of Upper Egypt or the desert highway of the west. From the areas located on the Red Sea (Hurghada 445 km, El Gouna 421 km. etc), the trip should be done on the highway of Al Quser.

Although its economy is based on agricultural production, El Minya is famous as an important producer of soap and perfumes and in sugar refining. In past times its economy was based on cotton farming and there are elegant palaces and villas of a classic, rococo, art deco or colonial style throughout the city. Historically El Minya was of transcendental importance during the reign of Akhenaton and his wife, Nefertiti and it is from this Pharaonic period that the sites of Beni Hassan, Tell El-Amarna and Tuna El-Gabal stand out.From a touristic and cultural point of view, it is also known for having the largest cemetery in the world, Zawiyyet al-Mayyiteen (City of the Dead) and for being the place where the agnostic gospel of Judas was discovered in the 70’s. Currently the University of El Minya, with its 17 colleges, has converted the city into one of the most important educational centres. This together with the industrial development, (cosmetics, cement, mining, agricultural industries, metalworking, woodworking and furniture in general etc.) the bustling business activity in the many shopping districts in different areas of the city, and a large offer of recreational areas on the banks of the Nile, make El Minya a city of continuous activity.

Teaching Plan 1.- THEORY AND PRACTICE Acquiring knowledge gives us technical capacity but it is only through practice that we develop the necessary skills to perform our activity with mastery and professionalism. For this reason all of the training modules at HTC Abo Korkas use a theory-practice method where besides receiving the necessary theoretical knowledge at the teaching facilities, practical training is carried out, every other week, on real customers at the hotel located on the school premises which is outfitted with all the facilities pertaining to the industry.

2.- LEARNING WITH THOSE WHO KNOW THE MOST The training objective of HTC Abo Korkas does not only consist of giving theoretical information to our students, but also of enabling them to offer their best performance from their first day at work, developing the attitudes necessary for giving customer oriented service and for their successful incorporation into companies and work teams. To achieve these goals and transmit our values, attitudes, skills and knowledge needed by the Egyptian hotel industry to our students, the CSHG as well as the ETF, have emphasized the assembling of a team of 20 teachers who posses ample professional experience in the Egyptian hotel industry. 3.- PERSONALIZED TRAINING One of the keys to the success of the training consists in the personalized supervision of the student. To achieve this objective interactive teaching methods are used. Work is done in small groups, which encourages participation and stimulates personal and professional maturity. The student is an active part of the teaching process: the method obligates the students to investigate, take initiative and to request advice from the teacher who is there to support them at all times.

4.- THE REAL WORLD This is the last pillar of the training. The transition of the students from the protected atmosphere of the HTC Abo Korkas to the working world should be made in a natural way and with an instinctive adaptation. After making sure that the students are technically and practically capable, through our methods of theoretical-practical teaching, where the student is faced with the demands that later on they will find in the real world, the student will pass to the real world through a supervised internship in the hospitality industry. This step will close the training process and makes sure that the student is willing and able to offer the very best professionalism that the industry demands from the very first day.

Campus and ResourcesThe HTC Abo Korkas sits on around 10.000 m2 site with gardens, two main buildings and three additional buildings. The classes take place and the school is managed from the 3-story Theory and Administration Building. Here are 4 rooms outfitted with the most modern audiovisual equipment as well as the administrative offices. The theoretical classrooms are complemented by a library and a multi-media language lab with 24 computers located in the Hotel Building. The Hotel Building also has an industrial kitchen divided into different sections: the main kitchen, cold food stations for meat, fish and vegetables, larder and storeroom, walk-in freezers, bakery, etc. which serve a buffet restaurant with a capacity for 77 customers and a fine dining restaurant with a capacity for 24 customers. In addition there is a coffee shop, 3 model guest bedrooms outfitted according to the standards of different types of hotels, 35 rooms for guests or boarding students, an auditorium with a capacity for 150 people and various meeting rooms.

Historically El Minya was of transcendental importance during the reign of Akhenaton and his wife, Nefertiti and it is from this Pharaonic period that the sites of Beni Hassan, Tell El-Amarna and Tuna El-Gabal stand out. From the cooperation point of view this growth in tourism has generated a demand for more qualified professionals. Tourism and Hospitality Tourism is one of the most important economic activities in the world. It is also the main vehicle for cultural exchange. In addition, in developing countries with a touristic profile it creates a favorable situation which allows for cooperation projects that promote economic and cultural growth. Egypt fits this profile. From an economic point of view, since 1980 due to the implementation of new tourism regulations and development plans to diversify tourism, tourism has risen to represent 25% of the income from foreign exchange and 18% of the GNP. This is due to not only to the tourism attracted by Egypt’s valuable historic heritage but also by creating new tourist products in the desert, Red Sea or the Sinai Peninsula, among others These figures are generated by an annual volume of 13 million tourists which translates to nearly 130 million overnight stays and have permitted the creation of more than 150,000 jobs. This tourism growth has provoked an increment in the lodging offer of more than 42% in the last years, reaching 210,847 beds in the year 2009. From the cooperation point of view this growth in tourism has generated a demand for more qualified professionals. This situation, together with the economic and employment needs in disadvantaged regions like El Minya with a population of around 500,000, makes projects like the HTC Abo Korkas sensible. With satisfactory results in the short run and at the same time creating new opportunities for the future in this region it offers the hospitality industry the professionals that a destination with the cultural heritage of Egypt needs to be able to offer and precisely one that the stones cannot provide: quality of service that will ensure a competitive future for the destination. Location and Surroundings The HTC Abo Korkas is located in Abo Korkas El Balad, a small town of some 20,000 inhabitants, situated in the region of El Minya and 20 kilometres from the capital with the same name. El Minya Governorate and, therefore, the main area of influence of the HTC Abo Korkas, is made up of 9 localities, 57 local administrative units, 346 towns and 1,429 villages which represent 5.1% of the total population of Egypt with a total of 4.2 million inhabitants. El Minya is known as the ‘bride of Upper Egypt’, due to its strategic position between the Upper and Lower Egypt. To travel to El Minya and Abo Korkas from the north (Alexandria 454 km, Cairo 225 km., the areas of the delta and some towns of the Sinai peninsula like Sharm El Sheikh 824 km.) as well as from the south (Aswan 635 km., Luxor 424 km. and areas of Upper Egypt) the trip can be made in train as both places have a train station or by car as both are connected with the main cities by the west highway of Upper Egypt or the desert highway of the west. From the areas located on the Red Sea (Hurghada 445 km, El Gouna 421 km. etc), the trip should be done on the highway of Al Quser. Although its economy is based on agricultural production, El Minya is famous as an important producer of soap and perfumes and in sugar refining. In past times its economy was based on cotton farming and there are elegant palaces and villas of a classic, rococo, art deco or colonial style throughout the city.

At the same time it has a business vision which is to provide the qualified professionals that the tourism and hospitality industry of Egypt is demanding. The training that HTC Abo Korkas offers will allow students to acquire the values, attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary in the hotel world and will open the doors to their future. The Project The Project HTC Abo Korkas was conceived in the year 2009, as an initiative between the Foreign Office of Spain, through the International Spanish Agency for Development (AECID) and the Egyptian Tourism Ministry. The objective was to take advantage of the continuing touristic growth and the demand for qualified professionals to consolidate an aid project for the economic and employment development in El Minya, one of the most disadvantaged regions of the country. In order to do this, the Project has counted with the Centro Superior de Hostelería de Galicia (CSHG), one of the most prestigious European centres of hospitality management training, to design the facilities and for the selection and training of the teachers. The Centro will also certify the degrees as it developed the curriculum together with the Egyptian Tourism Federation (ETF) in order to ensure that on the one hand the students would become professionally qualified and on the other that their training would fit the real needs of the Egyptian hotel industry. All of this is sponsored by the Association of Upper Egypt for Education and Development (AUEED), one of the most prestigious NGO’s in the country and owner of the building where the school is located, in order to achieve the following objectives:

- Promote the economic and employment development in the Upper Egypt among the most disadvantaged social classes.

- Reinforce the training and job integration for women - Offer qualified professionals for the Egyptian hotel

sector.

Tourism and Hospitality Tourism is one of the most important economic activities in the world. It is also the main vehicle for cultural exchange. In addition, in developing countries with a touristic profile it creates a favorable situation which allows for cooperation projects that promote economic and cultural growth. Egypt fits this profile. From an economic point of view, since 1980 due to the implementation of new tourism regulations and development plans to diversify tourism, tourism has risen to represent 25% of the income from foreign exchange and 18% of the GNP. This is due to not only to the tourism attracted by Egypt’s valuable historic heritage but also by creating new tourist products in the desert, Red Sea or the Sinai Peninsula, among others These figures are generated by an annual volume of 13 million tourists which translates to nearly 130 million overnight stays and have permitted the creation of more than 150,000 jobs. This tourism growth has provoked an increment in the lodging offer of more than 42% in the last years, reaching 210,847 beds in the year 2009. From the cooperation point of view this growth in tourism has generated a demand for more qualified professionals. This situation, together with the economic and employment needs in disadvantaged regions like El Minya with a population of around 500,000, makes projects like the HTC Abo Korkas sensible. Location and Surroundings The HTC Abo Korkas is located in Abo Korkas El Balad, a small town of some 20,000 inhabitants, situated in the region of El Minya and 20 kilometres from the capital with the same name. El Minya Governorate and, therefore, the main area of influence of the HTC Abo Korkas, is made up of 9 localities, 57 local administrative units, 346 towns and 1,429 villages which represent 5.1% of the total population of Egypt with a total of 4.2 million inhabitants. El Minya is known as the ‘bride of Upper Egypt’, due to its strategic position between the Upper and Lower Egypt. To travel to El Minya and Abo Korkas from the north (Alexandria 454 km, Cairo 225 km., the areas of the delta and some towns of the Sinai peninsula like Sharm El Sheikh 824 km.) as well as from the south (Aswan 635 km., Luxor 424 km. and areas of Upper Egypt) the trip can be made in train as both places have a train station or by car as both are connected with the main cities by the west highway of Upper Egypt or the desert highway of the west. Although its economy is based on agricultural production, El Minya is famous as an important producer of soap and perfumes and in sugar refining.
