Description:
CEO Steve Georgis presents LineRate's HTTP Traffic Steering solution for Service Providers. Speaking to Service Providers and others at the Telecom Executive Summit, he shares how LineRate Proxy delivers virtualized Layer 7+ traffic steering and policy enforcement using only COTS X86 servers to meet growing traffic demands. Delivering on the promise of Software Defined Networking (SDN) LineRate provides a carrier-grade solution that eliminates need for expensive proprietary hardware platforms and creates new monetization opportunities for Service Providers.

in Data Traffic Across Service

Provider Networks

There is an Explosion in Cloud Services

As we all know, Web based applications and OTT services are driving a large increase in data traffic in service provider networks, especially mobile. This brings new challenges.

Increased Traffic Creating Problems for Service Providers

• The revenue & cost curves must change

• Need to reduce infrastructure costs

• Need to monetize new services

Revenue and Cost Over Time

Cost

How do you deliver all that data economically? How do you monetize some of those services to increase revenues? In other words, how can you change the shape of the cost & revenue curves to maintain profitability?

HTTP Will Dominate the Traffic Mix

10x data growth>90% of traffic will be HTTP

Imperative to optimize HTTP flows to reduce cost and monetize services

Mobile Traffic Growth(source: Cisco VNI Mobile 2012)

With all of these new web-based services, HTTP increasingly dominates network traffic. This is creating an imperative to optimize HTTP traffic.

To avoid having to scale the core, and to monetize new services, SP’s are deploying OTT services at the edge of the network. A DPI is often used, but is limited to steering based on packet-level inspection of flows. But a single flow can contain multiple HTTP service requests.

Because HTTP messages can’t be parsed at the packet level, it’s common to hairpin all traffic thru services like a daisy-chain. The problem: All the services see ALL the traffic.

As traffic increases, all OTT systems must be scaled to handle peak load. This isn’t cost-effective and adds complexity.

A smarter solution: Intelligently route only the required traffic to each service. Rather than packet-based inspection, traffic steering must be done based on HTTP request/response messages in order to identify individual service requests and steer those requests only to the appropriate service. In our Traffic Steering example, the video stream is redirected to local cache to offload core network. No need to scale all the service to handle peak traffic.

How LineRate Proxy is Different

• Breakthrough technology delivers all the benefits of fine-grained traffic steering and programmable policy enforcement in a pure SW solution that runs on COTS x86.

• Terminates HTTP requests & responses to analyze and make switching & policy decisions on each one – unlike packet-based DPI systems.

• Fully- programmable data path allows customers to rapidly script policies. Every subscriber can have an individual policy to tailor services.

• High-performance software-defined network processing delivers performance comparable to HW-based platforms.
