How much do I pay, and when?
Enrolment fees
You must pay the enrolment fee for the entire course, when you enrol, before the course starts. (For example, if your course lasts 30 weeks, you must pay the fee for 30 weeks when you enrol.)
Accredited coursesIf you take an accredited course, we will expect you to enter for theaccreditation and aim to achieve it.
All accredited courses cost £1.70 per hour.
However, they are free if:l you receive a benefit that is assessed on your income;
l you depend on someone who receives a benefit that is assessedon their income; or
l you are eligible for the Learner Support Fund.See ‘Learner Support Fund’ on page 5.
NVQ Level 2 courses are free to learners who do not already have a full level 2 qualification (e.g. 5 GCSEs grades A-C).
NVQ Level 3 courses are free to learners who do not already have afull level 3 qualification (e.g. 1 A level) and who are aged 19 -24.
Learners 25 and over who do not already have a full level 2qualification are also entitled to a free NVQ level 3 course.
Children’s Care, Learning and Development NVQsYou may be able to get financial support for NVQs in Children’s Care,Learning and Development from Coventry Early Years Developmentand Childcare Partnership. See page 13.
Accreditation and exam feesIf your course is accredited, you must pay the accreditation or examfee together with your course enrolment fee before the course starts.See ‘Learner Support Fund’ on page 5 for help with accreditation andexam fees.
Courses which are not accreditedAll courses which are not accredited cost£2.00 per hour, and usually run each term.
If you are aged over 60, the cost is £1.35 per hour.
Passport To Leisure and LearningIt is free to enrol on a non-accreditedcourse with a Coventry Passport toLeisure and Learning (PTLL).
Free courses
l English and maths workshops.
l Family learning.
l Courses to help people with learningdifficulties or mental health concernsto live independently or work towardscourses that offer recognisedqualifications.
l Courses up to level 2 that arespecifically designed to help peopledecide which direction they wish totake with their learning, for examplecourses to build people’s confidence.
l Courses supported by other sourcesof funding.
How do I enrol?You can come along and enrol on any of the dates and timesshown on pages 29, 30 and 31 for the venue at which yourcourse is running.
During the enrolment times shown on pages 29, 30 and 31 therewill be a date at most venues when detailed advice and guidancewill be available from tutors. When you go along to enrol,remember to take with you payment for the course. If you areentitled to a free course, remember to take the required evidence.
You may be able to get help with costs from the Learner SupportFund. See page 5 for more information.
If there are not enough people enrolled on a course we will try tofind you a similar course nearby, but cannot guarantee this.

How can I get help with costs?Learner Support FundThere are limited funds to help some learners onaccredited courses. These funds are available to learners,and are based on income or other circumstances. You can apply to the Learner Support Fund for help withcourse fees, examination and accreditation fees, travel andchildcare. The money is provided by Coventry andWarwickshire Learning and Skills Council.
You can get leaflets on the fund from your local venue orDistrict Office, or you can phone 024 7683 2298.
Coventry Early Years Development and Childcare PartnershipIf you are interested in working with children, you may beable to get help with course fees. See page 13.
Coventry Passport to Leisure and Learning (PTLL)It is free to enrol on a non-accredited course with aCoventry Passport to Leisure and Learning (PTLL). For information about Coventry Passport to Leisure andLearning, please see page 9.

Prefer to dance solo? Then try a class in Tap, Latin inLine or Line Dancing where you will improve co-ordination and rhythm, learning sequences to motivatingmusic.
If you'd prefer another style then try Bollywood dancing –Indian traditional and contemporary dance set to thelatest pop, Indian and bhangra music. Or why not tryAfrican Dance, a new course this September? You'll havefun learning moves from traditional and modern Africandance. We have a choice of daytime and evening dance classesat community venues across the city. Don’t worry ifyou’ve never danced before – our tutors will help youalong the way and make sure you get the most out ofyour course. Many classes are for complete beginners,and there are also improver classes for people with someexperience. You'll get the opportunity to perform for thelocal community (only if you're interested!), and you'll alsobe kept up to date about social evenings and otherevents where you can enjoy practising the dances youhave learned in class.

English andmaths GCSEDo you need a GCSE to help you move on? Are youinterested in exploring or updating your skills? Considerthe GCSE courses we are offering in English and maths.
The English GCSE course includes creative writing, media,Shakespeare, novel reading and poetry, with a mixture ofcoursework and two exams in the summer making up thefinal mark. For those who live or work in the Holbrooksarea there may be the opportunity to take the course FREEof charge at President Kennedy School and CommunityCollege. To check if you could get the course free, pleasecontact the number below.
The maths GCSEcourse covers fivemodules, two of whichare coursework basedand three of which areexam based. Areascovered on the courseinclude number andmoney management;handling data; shapeand measurement; andalgebra. The benefit ofthis style of GCSE isthat it allows you tobuild up your skillsthroughout the year.
Before the course starts, check if this is the right coursefor you. We provide assessments and advice andguidance sessions at the beginning of the courses.

Family LearningThe Children and Family Education Service offers a varietyof courses in primary schools and community venues tohelp you to support your child's learning. All programmesare free, informal and fun and will give you the chance toimprove your skills and gain a certificate.
Footsteps offers you the opportunity to learn how toenhance your children's development whilst sharing books,fun activities and rhymes with them (0 – 4 years). There arebooks to borrow and activities to do at home. Theemphasis is on learning through play.

The Adult Education Service has a range of courses that makeskeeping fit and healthy easy and enjoyable. Whether you arejust starting to include exercise in your life, wishing to improveyour fitness or wanting to try something new, we offersports and fitness courses at all levels of physical demandto meet all capabilities.
If you think exercise is not for you, that it will be too hard orthat you won't be able to keep up, think again. We offercourses such as Gentle Keep Fit which includes chair basedexercises, as well as Keep Fit for specific age groups –courses that will improve physicaland mental wellbeing for everyone.Sometimes committing to a regularexercise programme can be difficult.Enrolling on a course that lastsseveral weeks will provide you with aframework and the support neededto achieve what you want. Coursessuch as one of the levels of Yoga orPilates will improve or maintain fitnesslevels. If you already have a good
level of fitness and want regular practice and/or challengingactivities, then Aerobics or Pilates at improver levels are for you –these courses are offered at various venues across the city.
We also offer a range of water based coursessuitable for all ability levels. Exercising inwater can be relaxing and enjoyable. Aquafitis suitable for most people – even those whoare expectant mothers and those who find itdifficult to exercise on dry land - you don'thave to be a great swimmer. If you're afraidof the water, why not try one of our swimmingcourses? Our tutors have passed on theirskills to learners of all ages. The classes aimto encourage adults to be confident in water.You will be taught a variety of strokes and
everyone learns at their own pace. So go on – take theplunge! If you can swim like a fish, what about consideringthe Lifeguard qualification? (Swimming Pool Supervisionpage 24). The success rate is great and it offersopportunities for employment at home and abroad. Dive in and see what's on offer.

There is a range of health, social care and science coursescovering Children’s Care Learning and Development, Care(adults), Introduction to Counselling/Listening Skills andScience GCSE.
NVQs are competence-based qualifications and participantsare required to produce a portfolio of evidence.
Introductory courses in childcare give an insight into work withchildren. Learners may then be able to progress to gain aqualification. In addition to those advertised to run inSeptember more of these will be offered in the spring andsummer terms.
The service offers units of the City & Guilds Children’s Care,Learning and Development Certificate. These two units are nota full qualification but give people who are not ready toundertake the NVQ an opportunity to acquire knowledge andpractical experience.
Children’s Care Learning and Development NVQ is for peoplewho work or wish to work with children aged from 0 to16 yearsin settings such as nurseries, playgroups, preschools andcrèches. Level 2 is appropriate for people who work, eitherpaid or in a voluntary capacity. People may be new to the role.Level 3 is for people who are experienced within a vocationalarea and whose job role calls for competence relating to arange of responsibilities
Care NVQ issuitable for peoplewho work withadults in health andsocial care settingssuch as daycentres, residentialhomes, individuals’homes and somegeneric areas ofhealth. This NVQ isoffered at level 2and level 3.Employers have an expectation that their care staff will have alevel 2 qualification. The level 3 award is designed for thosewho have some supervisory responsibilities.
Many people are eligible to take NVQs without paying tuition fees(see page 4). The Coventry Early Years Development andChildcare Partnership can also fund some learners (see page 13).
Introduction to Counselling/Listening Skills is suitable for peoplewho want to use such skills in `helping' conversations, involuntary, professional or other contexts.
Science GCSE is particularly useful for adults who want toenter professions such as nursing or teaching where a Sciencequalification is required.

The Adult Education Service offers arange of computer courses.
Computer workshops – leisure areworkshops for those with no previouscomputer knowledge or for those notwishing, or not ready, to take aqualification. There are a range of topics including:
• the basics for complete beginners

• using the scanner

• ITQ (NVQ in using IT) (3 terms) - a flexible qualification, which enables you tochoose units that reflect what you do as part of your job, study, voluntary work or hobby.
• Business and Administration NVQ Level 2 or 3 (2 or 3 terms) is a part-timeflexible, work-based qualification. It is aimed at people who wish to gain recognition for their skills and knowledge, update their skills or start a new careerin administration.

NVQ for IT Users (City and Guilds) iTQ is an innovative qualification for anybody who uses IT aspart of their job. Its unique ‘pick and mix’ design makes itideal for the workplace. The flexibility of ITQ means you canmould the qualification to fit your individual job role. You donot need to be in paid employment to undertake this award,as long as you are undertaking ‘real work’. This could bevoluntary work or other activities.
There are a wide range of units to choose from within theITQ award, ranging from level 1 to level 3. Candidates arerequired to build up a portfolio of evidence to meet therequirements of the awarding body. Portfolio evidence can be gathered from tasks already undertaken as part ofyour job.
During this thirty week course you will attend a weekly classto develop your IT skills across the range of units you haveselected. Advice and guidance on building your portfolio willbe provided and you will be visited in your workplace forassessment purposes.
Course fees for 2007/8 will be £165 with an additionalregistration and certification fee of £37.30 and £30.00respectively (level 2).
FREE course fees are available for those without a full Level2 qualification, (5 GCSEs Grades A-C or equivalent).

Following the introduction of the unitised BSL awards this year, we are nowoffering a 6 week BSL Resit Workshop in October. MusicWhether you're 20 or 70, you're never too oldto start learning how to sing, play aninstrument or write a song – lots of peoplehave said they wished they had done itsooner!
Many of our classes are for completebeginners, requiring no previous musicalexperience. Our tutors know about thechallenges in getting started in music and willencourage you to develop your interest.
As well as many Guitar courses for beginners,we are also offering beginners' courses in Altoor Tenor Saxophone, Keyboard, Harp, CelticViolin, and Mandolin or Bodhran.
Ask us if you need advice about instruments.We have a number of harps which we canprovide for our harp class. For some other courses, often agood way to start is to hire an instrument from a music firm.
In September we will be running our African Drumming coursein the evening – our 'twilight' course last year was really popular!We have a complete set of djembes – the traditional WestAfrican drums. If you're interested, why not stay on for anotherhour and learn African Dance – see page 6.
There are several follow-on programmes. In Guitar, we have:Beginners Plus classes if you have been to one of ourbeginners' courses or have some basic knowledge; andimprovers' classes if you've been playing for about two years.
There are also follow-on courses inKeyboard. Our Singing Group is forpeople with or without singingexperience. And lastly, we have theCobwebs Orchestra course – allinstruments, all levels, for anyonewanting to ‘blow the cobwebs’ off theirinstruments, try out lots of differentstyles of music and gain confidenceplaying with others.

Royal Yachting Association (RYA)courses take place during the evenings ofthe autumn and spring terms to get you ready for sailing afterEaster. Dayskipper introduces you to all the things you need toknow to sail on rivers and coasts. Yachtmaster gives skills to enable you to go further from the shore.These courses lead to qualifications which you register and pay forseparately with the RYA.
Beginners family history courses start you offappreciating the range of records you can use from paperrecords to records accessed using the internet, and help youto work out how to best start your family tree. We offer qualifications for people wanting to train to work asteaching assistants in schools or to support adult learners in theclassroom. Acceptance on to these different courses is subjectto initial assessment and interview.
Teaching Assistant qualifications
National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 2 is for peoplewho are new to the role of teaching assistant, work in a limitedcapacity or would like to work in schools. NVQ at level 3 is forexperienced teaching assistants whose job role calls forcompetence relating to a range of responsibilities.
NVQs are competence based qualifications, for whichparticipants are required to produce a portfolio of evidencewhilst working in a primary, secondary or special school.
Certificate for AdultLearner Support
The City & Guilds 9297 is acourse for those interestedin becoming volunteers inEnglish or maths classes. Ifyou would enjoy becoming alearning partner, supportingone or two learners underthe guidance of a tutor, then this is the course for you. Some ofour volunteers decide to train further and go on to becomelearning support assistants or tutors, whilst others prefer to offertheir time as volunteers, performing a valuable role within adultlearning. The course is free for all those who volunteer.

Visual artsFeeling creative? Our visual arts programme has something foreveryone. We have a wide range of courses from traditionalarts and crafts such as Watercolour Painting, Lace Making, andWoodcarving to more specialised and contemporary craftsincluding Creative Textiles, Jewellery Making, and Papercraft.
We are introducing an exciting new coursein digital art this year - Computer Art - whichyou can do at the brand new premises inSwanswell. Additionally, we have DigitalPhotography which will teach you how touse the equipment as well as encourageyou to develop your creative skills.
Arts and crafts are great things to do! Aswell as acquiring skills, you will be sure toenjoy the opportunity to be creative.In some classes, such as Pottery andDressmaking, you will work on your own long-term projects. In Creative Card Making you will be able to produce distinctivegreetings cards for your friends or family. On all our courses,with the help of our skilled tutors – many of whom are practisingartists or crafts people – you can learn to create beautiful thingsfor your home, things to wear, or items which you might want togive as presents or to sell.
Our courses are designed so that you can takepart whether or not you have previous experiencein the visual arts. And they are good steppingstones too – some learners in recent years havegone on to take part in competitions, set up their
own businesses, such as Floristry or Cake Decorating, or haveprogressed to gain certificates or diplomas in Further Education.
In all our classes we aim to acknowledge the richness of manydifferent art and craft traditions from across the world which weare sure will make your time with us stimulating as well asenjoyable.
