Hello CNH BEEs! We have officially finished our first month of our term! With summer around the corner, start planning ways for which you can fundraise for the upcoming year. Fund-raise for Fall Rally, District Convention, of course, PTP, and much more! Summer is a GREAT time to not only fund-raise, but also to do some SERVICE! With the free time available during the summer, please spare some of this time to do some service for your community. Thank you for being amazing CNH BEEs and I hope you have an amazing fun-filled year!

NEWS FOR MEMBERS

GOVERNOR from the It is odd; it may be confusing to have a new board installed before your new school year even begins. This alone should signify that Key club is not like any other club on campus. The year ends and begins at District Convention in April. This unique schedule allows for new officer training while under the retired officers’ guidance and also year round community service. It is a schedule that may be odd; however, it is to make the member experience that much better. You can expect to see members by the thousands reciting the Key Club pledge and thousands cheering until the “woot, woot, hollas” turn into shrills. In Key club, these scenes happen. Outsiders are clueless to these Key Club activities. As a member, you can see the awe/confusion/surprise in their faces when they see a horde of people like yourself. It is like being inside one of those inside jokes– just with thousands of people. There is this feeling that you are not combating evil alone, you are serving your community alongside thousands of others. Trust me, being a member, paying the membership again and again, year after year, is well worth it. Members—keep on serving.

post TECH EDITOR Hello CNH Bees! How are you feeling while you read this? I hope many of you are excited that school is almost over and to some, already over.

But, just because the school year is over, doesn’t mean Key Club ends during the summer. There is always service to be done in your community whether it be picking up trash, planting trees, or volunteering at your nearest animal shelter. Take part in community service and don’t lose the Key Club spirit either!

Spread the word of Key Club amongst all your peers, acknowledging how fun and exciting it is! When you come back from summer vacation, you may either be graduating or starting a fresh new year of high school. Whatever the case may be, I expect your Key Club spirit to be louder and prouder than ever! So what do you do when I say, HOW DO YOU FEEL?

Compiled by District Executives

Hey CNH! With over 40,000 members in our district, it is important that all CNH members strive to always increase membership and encourage more service. Whether you’re a member, club officer, or District Board officer, please remember that we ALL are members of this district. Keep track of your service hours, communicate with your Club Secretary, and always sign in at events to get volunteer credit! Strive to become more active during your weekly club meetings, get involved with your club and division socials and service projects, and help your club grow stronger as a team! Always keep in mind our CNH district goal of 42,000 members and remember that your paid dues make a difference in achieving this goal!

The Official California-Nevada-Hawai’i District Newsletter

Everyone experiences procrastination from time to time. Some people are chronic procrastinators, while others claim they work better under pressure. It's not about being lazy, but often people run out of time or take on too many projects. Some of the things we never get around to doing are boring, difficult, overwhelming, and complicated. Most people procrastinate due to feeling overwhelmed.

ABOUT THE COMMITTEE The job of the Member Recognition Committee is to make sure that hardworking and accomplished Key Clubbers such as you get recognized for the service, leadership, and creativity that you display throughout the year. By reviewing the guidelines for each award, editing and creating new awards, and overseeing the judging process, the committee strives to ensure that all members have an equal chance for recognition throughout the 2010-2011 Key Club CNH District Year. If you are ever in need of assistance, let us know! CONTESTS This year, we are very excited to announce that not only are we continuing most of last year’s splendid contests, but that we are also creating new contests to better

recognize outstanding Key Clubbers. Although we have some ideas for new recognitions, we would love to hear ideas from Key Clubbers throughout the District. Contact us with your idea and we will make sure to consider your input. On another subject, we will be working on new ways to recognize members and clubs throughout the entire CNH Key Club year. Look for more recognition within the division and on the CNH Cyberkey. Guidelines for the 2010-2011 Key Club Year will be posted mid-summer on the CNH Cyberkey under the Recognition tab. QUESTIONS? L i k e m a n y t h i n g s , procrastination is a habit, and habits can be broken and retrained. Are you one of the millions who procrastinate. English actor Christopher Parker said, `Procrastination is like a credit card: It's a lot of fun until you get the bill.' 1. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Divide big projects i n t o s m a l l e r m o r e manageable pieces. The first key is to break down projects. This can be at home or at work. For example you are given an assignment to write a 400 page novel. For the majority of people this would seem like a daunting task. But what if we re-worded the project and it asked you to write a page a day for a week, a month, or a year? To most people, that would be a lot less overwhelming. 2. Write it down. This can

be listed in no particular order and will give you a handle on just what you need to accomplish. A calendar (with plenty of room for notes) is a useful way to schedule short and long term goals. Often it is easier to start with the worst task. 3. Schedule priority items. One useful way to schedule items in order of priority is to use deadlines. For example if you have a 5 page paper to write, scheduling to work on a page each day from 6:00 until 7:00 each night from Monday until Friday for one week will allow you to finish your paper on time. This can apply to many other items as well, such as paying bills or writing a proposal fo r work . 4. During scheduled times, do what was scheduled. Often people will avoid working on the priority by cleaning their closet which hasn't been done in 7

Procrastination continued from page 3

years or washing dishes or even walls--anything to avoid the priority item. 5. Schedule in breaks and rewards. One form of a break might be relaxing or meditating for 3-5 minutes between work sessions. Others enjoy more social relaxation such as a movie, TV, phone call, a date or a trip to a coffee shop. While others enjoy a walk or some exercise, others may enjoy a food or drink treat such as chocolate. Others may enjoy some music, a new item of clothing or a book. Yet others may enjoy a bubble bath, flowers, or candles. Leisure time or time doing a hobby or taking a trip may also be a s a t i s f y i n g r e w a r d . 6. Find yourself an accountability partner, someone to help monitor your progress. Tell them your plans and continue to tell them as you p r o c e e d . A n o t h e r

accountability option is to send email messages to yourself asking for progress reports and reminding yourself of important tasks to do. Sometimes your accountability partner can be used to help delegate tasks to others. 7. Try to set realistic goals for yourself and your time. There are only 24 hours a day and at least 7 of those you should be sleeping. That would leave you with 17 hours. Use your time consistently. 8. Be honest with yourself about how much you can do. Learn how to say `no' if you are unable to take on a task. People need to prioritize and do the most important tasks first. 9. Make a to-do list and i n c l u d e t i m e approximations for how long each part will take. Always add in extra time for the unexpected or interruptions. What if you

April showers bring May flowers. Perhaps April 2010 started off rocky. The beginning months are always the toughest; however, you are a tough cookie; you and your board can weather it out. Now being the end of May hopefully you have gotten the gist of your position. If not already, then surely within the next few months you will. You are going to grow into a flower more beautiful than the one you came. Any leadership position is a learning one. There are going to be tough lessons to master such as silencing members, but there will be sweet ones such

Hey CNH Webmasters, Bulletin editors, divisional editors, and publicists! What a mouthful! Congratulations on receiving the position for your home club or division. Also, by reading this message, you are already ahead of the game of anyone else who have yet to read this. Congratulations again! To start things off, I recommend all editors to have a goal to become distinguished. Go to the cnh cyberkey at cnhkeyclub.org and under the recognition tab, click officers and you will find the rubric to make distinguished for editors. Please look through these guidelines thoroughly! Read it. Study it. Breathe it. Live it. Anything that helps you understand what is required to become distinguished will work. The guidelines will not change significantly and any adjustments will be noted. Next, please submit agendas as often as possible. CNH Key Club is not just a district; we are a family. The best way to keep relations with people is to talk to them as often and detailed as possible. These articles allow people all over California, Nevada, and Hawaii to listen in on what is going on in the area. Lastly, please make the deadlines and if you have any questions, please contact me! I’m not intimidating! J

Hello CNH Secretaries! Once again, congratulations on your election as Club Secretary. As you may have heard before, you are the backbone of your club, so keep your club strong! How can you be a successful secretary and help improve your club? Stay organized. As secretary, you are in charge of meeting minutes, forms, files, mem-ber hours, and much, much more! If you start out your term organized and ready to go, you will be less stressed throughout the rest of your term. Make sure to communicate with your fellow officers and members on a regular basis. It is important to maintain a strong relationship with your club board and faculty and Kiwanis advisors, since they will be supporting you throughout your term. Stay connected with your mem-bers and develop strong relationships with them because you will be helping them maintain their service records. The most important aspect (in my opinion) of your term is the Monthly Report Form (MRF). Familiarize yourself with the entire form and the different sections in order to un-derstand each particular function of the MRF. While the first few months of completing the MRF will be difficult, the task will become much easier as time progresses! Don’t give up and keep motivating yourself to submit the MRF each month and become stronger leaders in your clubs. I am always here to assist you, so please don’t hesitate if you ever need advice or help!

The Monthly Report Form is a file that the Club Secretary is responsible for completing and submitting each month to their respective Lt. Governor, Kiwanis and Faculty Advi-sors, and Regional Advisors. The MRF contains many use-ful tabs in order to organize monthly records, service hours, club directory information, etc. It is important that you stay on top of your work and always strive in submit-ting the MRF by the 5th of every month. If you have not downloaded the file already, go to cnhkeyclub.org > Secretary to find the downloadable file.

Hello CNH Treasurers! First of all, Congratulations on becoming your club’s treasurer. You make it possible that every key clubber in your club is a key clubber! I have two pieces of advice for you. One, stay organized. Make sure you keep all your work so that you can turn them in and become a Distin-guished Treasurer. Also, when membership season comes, keeping organized will help you relieve stress not only on yourself, but your board and advisor. Two, start planning. Summer is coming up, which is a wonderful time to start fundraising for the year. Let’s continue mak-ing history! I encourage you to start a budget for the year. Work with your past club treasurer and your current president to prepare a budget for the year. Less school work means you can give more time to Key Club! So use that time wisely and prepare for the year. Lastly, make sure you join the Treasurer Reflector <http://groups.google.com/group/cnh-kc-treasurers> so that you can be connected with not only me, but other club treasurers in our District. If you have any questions to be answered, I would love to answer them whether it is one or fifty questions. With care and respect,

TREASURER message from the

Preparing a club budget with your president and past club treasurer is a great resource to help your club cal-culate how much they will spend this year and how to distribute funds. Once prepared, share it with your board members, approve it, and keep it somewhere easily ac-cessible. Here are some questions to consider when cre-ating your budget.

What funds does the club have from the previous year?

Has contact been made on whether the Sponsoring Kiwanis Club offers financial help?

Are there connections with local business to provided donations or reduce rates on copies for flies, club newsletters, and agendas?

Club Newsletter Considerations

How many club newsletters are going to be pro-duced throughout the year?

How many pages is each newsletter going to be? How many newsletters are to be printed each

month? How much is each newsletter print cost?

Transportation

Is the club going to provide reimbursements for gas to drivers to events?

How much is the club going to reimburse a driver for driving?

What events will the club need to provided transpor-tation for? (Service Projects, Fall Rally, DCON)

How much does transportation cost? (drivers, bus) Other Cost

Will the club provide spirit items for members who at-tend District Events (Fall Rally, DCON)

Will the club provide awards, certificates, and/or prizes to members throughout the year or at the end of the year?

What will attract potential members to join? How much funds does the club need to prepare for

this year? What is our goal to fundraise for Pediatric Trauma

Prevention? If the club prepares and approves the budget in the be-ginning of summer, the rest of summer time can be used to fundraise for what is needed.

At any time you would like, go to cnhkeyclub.org and download our latest Dues Report. Throughout the year, the report will be updated and will show the record from Key Club International on your club standings: last year’s membership, this year’s membership, new clubs, reacti-vated clubs, and suspended clubs. It is organized by divi-sion and alphabetically by clubs in the division. Check what date your club has paid their dues and how many members show as “paid”. Make sure you work with your club secretary to record this information correctly on the Monthly Report Forms (MRFs).
