FALL RALLY SUMMARY

On behalf of the CNH District Board, I would like to say thank you to everyone. Fall Rally 2009 was a true success and words cannot even closely describe how appreciative we are of Cali-Nev-Ha Key Club. With over $100,000.00 raised so far for Pediatric Trauma Programs, CNH has broken records like never before. I would just like to thank every club who was able to attend, fundraise for PTP, and contribute to all the efforts. I would also like to thank all adult chaperones for keeping us safe, making the event possible, and putting up with the intense noise. The spirit and enthusiasm for Key Club was amazing in every rally and I hope everyone had a wonderful time while knowing that they are changing lives for the better. With deep gratitude, Jesse Truong District Governor

officer Hello Presidents and Vice Presidents! Not much to say this month. I just hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and that you are able to make someone else’s holiday season wonderful as well. This is the time of the year to share your spirit of giving and show your community that Key Clubbers care. Also, I would like to thank EVERYONE for their contribution to CNH Key Club raising more than $120,000 for PTP. That is an unbelievable amount and it’s all because of you. If you organized your school to attend Fall Rally, if you attended Fall Rally, if you were a chaperone, if you helped your club or division raise money, or if you really wanted to go, thank you so much. This Thanksgiving, I know I will be thankful for serving the best district in all of Key Club International. Happy holidays, and as always, let me know how I can serve you. Buzzin’ with CNH spirit, Jesse Truong District Governor California-Nevada-Hawaii Key Club International Dues If you have not submitted dues, please submit your dues as soon as you can. Your club will not be penalized if you submit your dues late. If you have already submitted your dues, you can still add members to your membership count! Build your membership up and meet the supplementary dues deadline of February 1. It’s never too late to be a member! Refer to the Treasurer’s page for more information or visit cnhkeyclub.org and click on the ―Treasurer‖ page under ―Officers‖ Fundraising We’ve done wonders for PTP, but why stop there? You can still do fundraisers with your club or even your division. PTP: Fundraise to help out the Pediatric Trauma Prevention cause. Funds will go towards 6 partner children’s hospitals throughout CNH to help pay for needed supplies and training for treatment of our youth. Ask your Lt. Governor how you can submit the money under the name of your division.

DCON: With DCON registration coming up shortly (see the District Convention Committee Report page), your club may need some funds to decrease the cost for a member to attend the most exciting event of the year, District Convention. It’s a good idea to start early, and fundraise now for DCON. Club Costs: If you want to have a club social or spice up your meetings, you might need some money to do so. Don’t wait until you are in need of money to start raising it. Instead, fundraise and deposit it to save up money so you can use it whenever you want to have a fun event or buy food and treats for your meetings.

AWARD Do you work hard for your club? Want some recognition? Well, the Member Recognition Committee has got you covered! If you are a club president or vice president, you can apply for your respective officer award. There are two levels, both which are easy to apply for: Outstanding: Complete the ―Officer Checklist‖ form and get all proper signatures to receive this award. Distinguished: This is the higher level of recognition. Complete the ―Officer Checklist‖ and submit a portfolio of the best of your work. Being a distinguished officer means that you have went a-buzz and beyond your call of duty to make your club amazing. Here are the guidelines for being distinguished:

President: Letters of recommendation, attendance at events, meeting agendas, club achievements, evidence of communication, Kiwanis relations, and others Vice President: Letters of recommendation, attendance at events, summary of position, evidence of task achievements, evidence of communication, Kiwanis relations, and others

Going Green: The officer awards will now be accepted over email! Be revolutionary and progress with CNH as we now accept ―green‖ submissions. Read the guidelines for easy instructions and details.

NOTE: The above guidelines are extremely condensed, visit cnhkeyclub.org, hover over ―Recognition‖, hover over ―Guidelines‖, then click ―Officers‖ for detailed guidelines

Tips: Here are some tips on how to get recognized. 1. Save all your work. Do not

trash ANYTHING. Keep everything you have ever done for your club, it may come in handy

2. Start early. To create the best quality portfolio, you want to make sure you have enough time to do so. If you start now, you will give yourself more time to ask questions and perfect your submission before you submit it.

3. Ask questions. If you do not understand how to apply or need some help, there are several people you can ask for help. You can contact your Lt. Governor, Member Recognition Chair Antoinette at [email protected], or myself at [email protected]

4. Submit on time! If you want your work to have a chance of being judged please submit it on time! The deadline is to be RECEIVED by March 5, 2010. Late submissions will not even be looked at. For information on how to submit your work, read the guidelines.

5. Go to DCON! Yay! After all your hard work, District Convention is the best way to end your term on a high note. It’s your last chance to enjoy CNH as the amazing district it is and to accept your award on stage. See you there!

CNH Presidents’ and Vice Presidents’ continued

Current hours achieved: 186,175 service hours as of Nov. 10 Goal for service hours: 750,000 hours by DCON 2010 As you can see, we have a long way to go until we reach our goal, but we can surely do it! We have already achieved our PTP goal, now we can reach our service hour goal! Here are some steps to reaching our goal: 1. Do your service. Be a member yourself and go do service 2. Give your members the opportunity. As presidents and vice presidents, it is your job to give your members the opportunity to do service. Find events, plan events, do joint projects, etc to offer to your members. 3. Appoint a service project chair and create a

committee. Assign certain members to be a part of a committee in charge of finding, planning, and organizing service projects 4. Submit your reports. Make sure your secretary submits his/her Monthly Report Form to report the hours your club has done per month. Holiday Service Ideas

Rose Floats - Every year the Kiwanis Family has a float in the Tournament of Roses. Thousands of Key Clubbers head to Pasadena to help decorate the Kiwanis float and other floats. Reserve spots for your club NOW! This is mostly exclusive to clubs in the South, but if you would like to help, feel free as long as you have a reservation. Caroling - Get together with your club to learn and perform Christmas carols for your local neighborhood, a convalescent home, a children’s hospital, or anywhere else you want to share your Christmas Key Club spirit Operation Christmas Child/Toy Drives - Collect toys, supplies, books, and other goods to share with the unfortunate. Next, you can pack them into shoeboxes and Christmas wrap them and visit http://www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk/ (Operation Christmas Child) to find a place to send them. Soup Kitchen - This is a classic but meaningful project to help the needy and serve them meals at your local soup kitchen, especially during this holiday season. Parades - With small and large Christmas parades going on everywhere, the parades might need help with the event. If you know about a local parade, contact them to see how you can help. Kiwanis Joint Projects - Contact your Kiwanians this season! They may have their own wonderful projects for this holiday season that you can help out with. City Events - There are different projects per city, but most city governments have a department in charge of holding public seasonal events. For example, I always volunteer at my city’s Snow Day for kids. Contact your city and ask how your club can help. Holiday Meals - With the holiday season coming up, it is the perfect season to have a holiday dinner. You can hold your own dinner perhaps for the unfortunate or a special banquet to raise money.

FILES Hello CNH Secretaries! Fall Rally South was as amazing as the one up north! The excitement and joy I felt along with the other executives when we found out CNH raised over $100,000 for PTP was indescribable! Along with your unceasing spirit, your unceasing drive to raise funds and to serve astounds me. Thank you for all you do and Happy Holidays! In the blink of an eye, more than half of the Key Club year has gone by. In the months to come, I urge you to not only continue keeping records for your club, but to continue serving your community. Remember the reason why you joined Key Club and don’t forget the sole purpose of the organization. By this point I am sure most of you have become masters of your office. However, if you have any questions or concerns feel free to ask!

I finished compiling this last month and I included as much information as possible to help you with your duties. Check it out for information on your MRF, taking minutes, recording service hours, and more.

Open up this manual and look for step-by-step instructions and ex-planations of all aspects of the file! I included as much info as I possi-bly could about the excel file into this manual so take a glimpse! Just a reminder that this week is Key Club week!

One goal down, two to go! Along with our goal to raise over $75,000 for PTP, we want the district to achieve over 750,000 hours of ser-vice! Last quarter (July/August/September) our district performed 81,049. Although this number is a decrease from the first quarter, in October, the combined total number of service hours was almost 60,000 (which is reasonable, clubs are usually less active during the summer)! As the club secretary, I ask of you two things:

Track all Service Hours: Make sure that every hour performed by your members at service events are logged and eventually transferred onto your Monthly Report Forms. The records and data I have come from your Lt. Governors who obtain their information from YOU! Don’t let any service performed be left unnoticed!

Provide Service: Assist your President and fellow officers in finding service opportunities! Get involved with one of our Service Partners for volunteer events or create a project related to our District Project C.A.R.E. Volunteer prospects exist everywhere! Just find them, or start them!

recognition SECRETARY After taking minutes weekly, completing your MRF’s monthly, and keeping track of all other records for your club, you should definitely apply to be recognized for all of your work! If you fulfill all of your duties, you should be more than qualified to apply for Distinguished Secretary! The Deadline to apply is March 5, 2010. Remember there are three different options when applying: you can either (a) submit a printed, bound report, (b) submit a PDF file on a CD, or (c) submit a PDF file via e-mail. This report should only contain the best examples of your work. Make sure to read the guidelines carefully for details! Items you will need to include:

Club Directory Monthly Report Forms (at least one per quarter) Minutes (at least one per quarter) Samples of Communication (e-mails/letters) Miscellaneous (Service Records, Sign-In Sheets, etc.)

Need help with any of the items that you were asked to include? Check out the Secretary Manuals on the CNH Cyberkey (cnhkeyclub.org) for assistance!

CALI-NEV-HA’S KEY LEADER SCHOLARSHIP

Every year, our district offers a scholarship to any member who participates in any local Key Leader location. Below, these are Key Club members who took the initiative to apply for the scholarship and have qualified: Division 7 South – Nhi Tran Division 7 South – Jonhny Pham Division 10 South – Kayla Huynh Division 11 – David Limjoco To find out more information about experiencing a one-of-a-kind leadership developing program, please visit www.key-leader.org \

DUES What does "delinquent" necessarily mean when we do not have our

dues in by December 1st? A club becomes ―delinquent‖ if dues are not paid by December 1st. Clubs are labeled as "suspended" if dues are still not paid by February 1st. The clubs charter is revoked around September 30th if the club still has not paid dues. That is the time that they would have to pay the $100 charter reinstatement fee along with any current dues. If your invoice arrives to the address (in Indiana) BEFORE the December 1st deadline, your club will be in good standing. That means your club will be able to attend Key Club events with liability coverage. If not, you can always turn in your invoice late. Is there anything else we should send in along with the dues? The only thing you need to send along to the international office, is the invoice that you generated and printed from http://soapmu.kiwanis.org/default.cfm?action=logon along with a check made payable to what is on the invoice. So only two things: invoice & check. How do you add new members after the dues? The dues process is an ongoing process, for every time you have a new member you can simply log into http://soapmu.kiwanis.org/default.cfm?action=logon and add the member onto the list, then save. I recommend you should click the button to generate a new invoice at least once to twice a month until no more new members arrive. Of course, if a member wants to join toward the end of the year, you should still make an invoice. Every time you generate a new invoice, you will only be asked to pay for the newly-added members So, keep on sending in invoices and checks frequently for the benefit of your members. What do members get when they pay their dues? Members of Key Club receive a pin, a brochure, and an international membership card with a unique member ID. It makes it official that your members are allowed to go to District Convention (the most anticipated event of the year), International Convention, and any Key Club events throughout the year. Members will only receive the card, pin, and brochure once throughout all their years in Key Club. Every year, paid members will receive a bi-annual subscription to the Key Club International magazine mailed to their home. Please do not allow non-members to attend confirmed Key Club events, for Key Club will not be responsible nor will Key Club cover non-members during the case of an emergency. Additional benefits include scholarship opportunities exclusively for Key Club members. In Cali-Nev-Ha, we offer a CNH Foundation Scholarship to graduating seniors of Key Club as well as a Key Leader Scholarship to all Key Club members who attend a life-changing leadership camp called Key Leader. Of course there are additional benefits--I can recall last year that Arizona State University offered full-ride opportunities to Key Club members.

Overall, members who are actively participating in Key Club get their pennies-worth back from all the opportunities that Key Club has to offer. Your $11 in dues goes to our district level ($4.50) and the international level ($6.50) of Key Club. This price goes towards all materials supplied in your division and materials sent to you upon request as well as liability coverage at a confirmed Key Club event.

Where can I find the status of the dues payment?

The home page of cnhkeyclub.org has a pencil called ―Current Club Dues‖ which is updated regularly, check to see membership numbers your club had during previous years.

WRITE ABOUT FALL RALLY SOUTH! I know many of you have attended Fall Rally South, and I know you guys had a lot of fun, so submit stories about your FRS experience!

HOW TO IMPROVE Keep churning out those articles and making them better! You guys are all doing great. :)

Focus on one. Don’t submit 5 short articles just to complete all the topics – instead, focus on one topic and expand.

Add pictures. Pictures enhance your story (after all, pictures are a thousand words) and allow people to really see what your club is up to!

Be creative. Instead of just writing what happened, use a different medium (like a poem) to show what happened!

REMEMBER Send it in to [email protected], not my tech editor email! Please try to submit before the deadline (15th) so you don’t have to scramble around and send in an apology!

For the website contest, if you have sent in an email, you’re good to go. And if your club’s website is already on the CNHKey, then it is already entered into the contest. Good job, you guys!

DESIGN: Use Graphic Standards! Don’t overload on the ―boxes‖ – I know they look pretty, but it can get cluttered very easily. Use recaps with pictures – they are aesthetically pleasing and encourage members to attend more events so they can see themselves in the next newsletter. Use Member Recognition to entice members to read your newsletter (ex. – find the typo!).

The “How to Register For Convention Form” gives a step-by-step checklist of how to register for convention. The checklist goes over all of the forms needed to register for convention and housing and where to send the forms. Make sure all forms are filled out correctly and all forms are sent to the right place- or your registration might be in jeopardy! On the second page of the ―How To Register For Convention Form‖ there is a list of information you need to read before registering. It has registration prices, important code of conduct information, what to do if you need to cancel, and where to go to ask questions. Make sure to look over this form before registering, and use it as a checklist sending in your registration forms! The “Advisor Responsibilities Form” states how advisors can prepare for convention (register), what they do when they arrive at convention, and other general information. We have all been warned about and taking precautions to prevent contracting the H1N1 Virus or Swine Flu. The virus can cause severe damage to all but can seriously hurt pregnant women and their unborn children and newborns. March of Dimes, one of three service partners of Key Club International, has released a notice on their website to assist families in handling the illness (visit this page at marchofdimes.com>comlications>infections). The donations that Key Club International provides March of Dimes each year are used for research and notices like these. It would be worthwhile to use this information and distribute it throughout your club, school, church, or neighborhood. As a project to help March of Dimes and PTP, consider going to a local elementary school or even a classroom in your high school and point out the precautions one should take, such as washing one’s hands after going outside, to prevent catching H1N1. day kiwanis ONE Kiwanis International recognizes one day out of the entire year to call every member of the Kiwanis Family together in service: Kiwanis One Day. The whole idea of Kiwanis One Day actually began in the California-Nevada-Hawaii District and past Kiwanis International President Nelson Tucker loved it so much, he decided to make it global! Current Kiwanis International President Paul Palazzolo, Circle K International President Jason Stewart, and Key Club International President Abigail McKamey have come together and have brought you a call to action video message. To view this message, visit keyclub.org and look for the ―Kiwanis One Day President’s Message‖ icon or search under the ―Service‖ tab. Have you ever wondered how to get that patch for your club banner for Kiwanis One Day? In order to receive your patch, you must complete the Project Report Form on the Kiwanis International website. All Kiwanis Family members should know that individual clubs should submit its own report for every club to receive a patch. Like last year, Kiwanis One Day falls on the weekend of District Convention. So in order to participate, do not forget to register for the Walk for Life benefitting PTP at DCON (District Convention)! If you are unable to participate in the walk or would like to do another service project for Kiwanis One Day but are unable due to DCON, find another date for your service project! Like many days designated by Kiwanis and Key Club International, Kiwanis One Day is a concept that does not have to fit into a time frame. The core idea is to unite the Kiwanis Family. So work with your sponsoring Kiwanis Clubs and find a date before or after DCON to celebrate the unity in service of the Kiwanis Family.

It is an event in which all branches of the Kiwanis Family participate. Many people are from southern California and a few from northern California though many people come from around the world to par t ic ipate in the annual decorating. Why should I go to Rose Float Decorating? You may ask. You should go because it is a great opportunity to do amazing and different service with the Kiwanis Family. Also it is an opportunity to interact with Key Clubbers all over the southern part of the district, meet the Kiwanis International President, and help spread the message of Kiwanis (and in turn Key Club) to the world to millions of people who watch the rose parade every year. So just go for it!

CNH Member Relations Committee Compiled by the 2009-2010 Member Relations Committee

Hello Cali-Nev-Ha! We’re a little over the halfway mark of our terms and I hope you all have been doing well. I hope all of you who attended Fall Rally North and South had a great time. If you didn’t attend, do your best to go next year because it’s an experience you’ll never forget. Throughout the course of the year, if you ever need a resource or tool, please communicate with either your Lieutenant Governor or the committee and the Member Relations Committee will get working on it! As a notification, dues should have already been submitted to the Key Club International Office. If you have not paid them or your club hasn’t submitted them yet, try to send them in as soon as possible because it’s better to pay dues late than not at all. Just a friendly reminder, try to maintain a consistent relationship with your Kiwanis, use the CyberKey, fulfill all of your Key Club member duties, and never stop serving and emitting your Key Club spirit! Lastly, whether you are an officer or a member, please continue to serve your homes, schools, and communities! Ben Chon Member Relations Chair 2009-10

Recently added on the home page of the CyberKey are CNH polls. These polls will be altered monthly with different questions covering various topics such as how to improve the CyberKey and feedback on major Key Club events. As a result, input for each poll would be greatly appreciated, as it will inform the CNH Board on what specifically to improve. Answering the polls will only take a minute or two at max so please help out!

advisor Key Club may be a student-led organization, but let’s face it. Where would we be if we did not have our wonderful advisors helping us along the way? Our advisors are like our second Ma’ and Pops’ taking in numbers of Key Clubbers each year. So you have this amazing advisor? Why don’t you nominate them for an award? There are three advisor awards available through CNH.

The Advisor Recognition Program This award is for club advisors that have been serving for at least one year. Advisors may be nominated for this award every year.

Marvin J. Christiansen This award is for club advisors that have been serving for at least five years. Advisors nominated may only be eligible once.

Jack Luther’s Advisor Hall of Fame This award is for advisors that have served the district (i.e. Regional Advisors, etc.). Advisors nominated may only be eligible once.

preparing for DCON

Although District Convention may seem far away, it’s never too early to start preparing! The 2010 Key Club District Convention will take place in Sacramento from April 9th to April 11th. Below are a couple things your club may want to start on. Advertising – Whether it’s by mouth or the flyer the District Convention committee may have created and uploaded onto the CyberKey, it’s

always a great idea to spread the word about this great event. Fundraising – District Convention is arguably one of the greatest events a Key Clubber can experience. To have as many members able to attend

the convention, start fundraising as early as possible.

Page 15: 20Newsletters/CNH_NEWS_12_2009

The Kiwanis International Rose Float Decoration is an annual event that gives southern Key Club members the opportunity to serve. This year, the float’s theme is ―above the rest,‖ which parallels to the 2010 Rose Parade theme of ―A cut above the rest.‖ The Kiwanis Rose Float promotes Kiwanis to approximately 450 million television viewers worldwide every New Years Day, clearly a significant public relations tool. Serving the Kiwanis indirectly benefits Key Club as Kiwanis is the sponsor and parent of Key Club. Additionally, this event is an excellent way to build or maintain relationships with your respective Kiwanis clubs if they happen to attend. Most southern Key Club divisions have already signed up to attend the decoration on specific dates. Each seven hour shift will have food provided. To attend, contact your Key Club Lieutenant Governor or go onto the CyberKey for more information.

TOOLS Three more new poll questions on

the homepage of the CyberKey. Please advertise this easy way to help out and inform the board on what to improve!

A solicitation letter for Kiwanis funds. This can be used when raising funds for any large event, such as Fall Rally and the upcoming 2010 Distr ict Convention.

Don’t know how to fundraise? Look forward to a how-to fundraise guide with all the basics you need to know and effective ideas.
