NASA’s partnership with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company produced tires that avoid puncture failure, lower fuel consumption in vehicles, and save energy

For both lunar/planetary exploration and Earth-based applications, the tire offers greater safety because it has no single point of failure

Tested in Glenn’s Simulated Lunar Operations (SLOPE) facility

Winner of the 2010 R&D 100 Award, and Patent and Tech Brief Awards

Spring Tire: For off-road terrestrial or planetary vehicles

Used for enabling access to research and testing facilities, to SMEs, or to Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RD T&E) Services

Unique to NASA – similar to Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) offered by other government agencies

Notable

• Defined Statement of Work (SOW) including milestones

• Intellectual Property (IP) and data rights defined upfront

• Reimbursable or nonreimbursable types

• Appropriate for all types of partners (small, medium, or large businesses, universities, etc.)

Licenses

10

Provide access to NASA inventions for commercialization purposes

Notable

• Terms/Negotiation is on a case-by-case basis

• Licenses may be exclusive, partially exclusive (different fields of use), or nonexclusive

• What is required

‒ See: http://technology.grc.nasa.gov/licensing.shtm

‒ Two step process

Part I – Business Terms with Pro Forma Income Statement
