tHe matcH upBragging rights within the “State of Hockey” are on the line this weekend as two of Minnesota’s elite NCAA Division I hockey programs clash in a nonconference, home-and home series. No. 14 Bemidji State University makes its 2010 debut at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse Friday to host No. 4 University of Minnesota Duluth and the Bulldogs return the favor Satur-day by welcoming the Beavers to the DECC for the series finale. The Beavers (15-5-2) open the weekend after a road series split at Niagara, dropping the opener, 6-4, before earning a win Saturday, 4-3. The Beavers are 2-1-1 in the new year and look to get back on track at home. After gaining victories in their first eight home affairs, the team suffered a series sweep to Minnesota State University, Mankato Dec. 11-12. Minnesota Duluth enters the series as one of the hottest teams in all of college hockey. The Bulldogs have won six of their last seven and 10 of 13 since an 8-1 rout over Michigan Tech Nov. 14. UMD leapfrogged the Beavers in the polls three weeks ago and since then has ascended to No. 4 following back-to-back sweeps of Colorado College and Minnesota State.
tHe rivalry One of the Beavers’ most consistent Division-I opponents, the 2009-10 season marks the 11th consecutive season BSU has clashed with Minnesota Duluth--playing the Bulldogs in each season since making the jump to the major college hockey level and dating back as far as 1948. Although UMD holds a 18-7-0 record in the all-time series and an 13-7-0 mark as Division I opponents, BSU is 5-3-0 in the last eight meetings and has won the last two contests versus the Bulldogs at the Glas. The teams first met Feb. 8, 1948--in just the 13th game of the BSU hockey program’s existence. The Bulldogs pulled out a 4-3 win in Duluth that day and would go on to gain victories in the next 10 meetings versus BSU. Dec. 6, 2002, Bemidji State put an end to the Bulldogs’ 54-year streak in the series with a 3-2 overtime triumph at the DECC. In 2003, the regional foes added a new wrinkle to the rivalry. A traveling trophy resembling Babe the Blue Ox was intro-duced and awarded to the winner of the second game of the series. Babe the Blue Ox is back on the line this weekend as the Beavers attempt to regain control after UMD captured Babe with a 3-2, 4-2 sweep of the Beavers in Duluth last winter.
tHe unparalleled traditionThe 2009-10 season represents the 11th at the NCAA Division I level, and the 54th year of intercollegiate competition, for a BSU program which has assembled one of the finest traditions in all of American collegiate sports.u BSU owns 13 NAIA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III national titles.u The Beavers have captured 21 conference titles in 53 seasons of intercollegiate competition.u BSU won the CHA regular-season championship in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005, becoming the league’s first repeat regular-season titlest and captured the 2008-09 championship on the heels of a 2007-08 crown. BSU has also won CHA Tournament titles in 2005, 2006, and 2009 en route to participating in the NCAA Tournament.u In 2009, the Beavers became the first No. 16 seed ever to reach the Frozen Four. He has guided the Beavers to seven consecutive seasons of .500-or-better hockey. Serratore’s teams have won CHA Regular-season Championships four times in the last six years (2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009) and made trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2005, 2006 and 2009 after confer-ence tournament titles, with a 2009 appearance in the Frozen Four. He has been named CHA Coach of the Year in 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009 and was Spencer Penrose National Coach of the Year Runner-up in 2009.uNow in his eighth season, ScottSandelin (North Dakota ‘87) has led the Bulldogs to a 161-180-46 overall record. Since taking the reigns of the UMD program in 2000, Sandelin has thrust it into a position of conference and national prominence directing UMD to appearances in four of the last seven WCHA Final Five Tournaments and a trip to the 2004 NCAA Frozen Four within a game of repeating in 2009. Sandelin previously served as an assistant at University of North Dakota where he helped lead the Fighting Sioux to a pair of NCAA titles (1997 and 2000) and three WCHA crowns (1997-2000). Prior to joining the coaching ranks, the Hibbing, Minn. native posted a standout four-year playing career at North Dakota before embarking on a seven-year professional career.
Bsu caps 2008-09 at 20-16-1Bemidji State wrapped up its 2008-09 CHA campaign, its 10th as a member of the NCAA Division I ranks, with a record of 12-5-1 to gain its fourth CHA regular-season title in the last six seasons. A pair of wins in the CHA Tournament and two more in the Midwest Regional guaranteed tomSerratore and his gang it’s seventh consecutive season with a record of .500 or better as it finished at 20-16-1 overall--the team’s fourth 20-win season under Serratore.
cHa successThe Beavers are coming off another successful College Hockey America campaign pulling down their fourth regular-season title in six years with a 12-5-1 record. In the last six seasons, no NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey team has a better winning percentage in league play than the Beaver’s .717 mark (82-29-11) versus the CHA, which includes a 4-0-0 mark in 2009-10.
our sHare of otExtending their Nov. 28 game versus Ohio State to overtime, the Beavers have now played four overtime games in 2009-10, matching their season totals from each of the last two seasons. In the 11 years since the Beavers moved to Division I, they have escaped overtime with at least a tie in 77.6-percent (52) of the 67 games that have needed ex-tra time to decide the outcome. Since March 11, 2006, BSU is 7-2-10 in games extended to sudden death, including a 2-1-1 mark in extra-time games in 2009-10.

Beaver scoring By classAs could be expected from any team, the Bea-vers’ scoring output was headlined in 2008-09 by its upper classmen...but not by much. The seniors led the charge with 50-52=102 points, but it was the freshman that gave BSU a boost in scoring totalling 25-48=73 points to fin-ish second. The class may be a year older in 2009-10, but the trend remains the same. Now sophomores, the class sits second the team in scoring with 21-41=62 points, while the juniors lead with 31-32=63.

Bsu 18tH in all-time WinsBemidji State became the 18th program among the 58 current members of NCAA Division I to post its 900th all-time victory when it defeated Ala.-Huntsville, 3-2, on Dec. 15, 2006. BSU’s 957 victories currently rank 18th all-time among current members of Division I. Cornell is next ahead of BSU, in 17th all-time with 971 victories. Sixteen Division I programs have posted 1,000 wins, including 2009-10 BSU foe Minnesota which leads Division I with 1,566 all-time victories, and is the only program in the nation with 1,500 or more all-time wins, while Boston College is second with 1,384 victories.
tHree is magic In 2008-09 three was the threshold for BSU. The Beavers allowed three or more goals on 18 occasions and were 2-15-1 in those games. Conversely, when BSU scored three or more goals, they were 16-5-1. In 2009-10, BSU is 2-5-1 when allowing three or more and are 11-2-1 when posting three or more goals.
tHe early goal gets tHe WinOf the Beavers’ 37 2008-09 contests, the team to score first won 26 times. BSU opponents won 12-of-21 of the games they were first to light the lamp while BSU was unbeaten 14-of-16 times it scored first. This season, BSU is 13-4-0 when scoring first and 2-1-1 when its opponent gets on the board first.
d-men on tHe scoreBoardsBemidji State’s defensive corps re-corded two goals and four assists in the series at Niagara, giving BSU defensive players at least one point in 73 of the last 87 games. Averaging 2.27 points per game, the 2009-10 blueline corps is on pace for its most productive season since the 2003-04 defense pitched in 2.31 points per game. During the 2008-09 campaign, BSU defensemen combined for 17-62=79 points (2.19 ppg). BSU’s blue liners accounted for five goals and 22 assists in the team’s final 10 games.
read makes it BetterThere is really no way to get around it, the Bemidji State men’s hockey team is better when junior forward MattRead is on the ice. Since stepping on campus in the fall of 2007 Read has a plus/minus rating of +49 and the Beavers are 27-6-1 when he scores a goal, which included a 12-2-0 mark during the 2008-09 campaign and a 10-1-0 mark this season.

offensive defensemanSophomore defenseman BradHunt was a big factor for the Beavers on both ends of the ice in 2008-09 and that trend is extending into 2009-10. In addition to his duties in BSU’s defensive zone, he has become offensive threat--especially on the power play. A year ago, he led all BSU blue liners and was third on the team scoring 9-23=32 points with a team-leading 7-16=23 coming on the man advantage. This winter he already has six goals and a team-leading 16 assist to pace all BSU defenders and is fourth among the nation’s defend-ers, with 22 points. His 14 points (4-10=14) on the power play paces the team.
running up tHe scoreDespite managing three or more goals in just five of their last eight contests, the Beavers enter the weekend scoring at 3.55 goals per game--a figure that seats them fifth in the country. BSU has netted five or more goals eight times this sea-son. That’s just what the doctor ordered for a team with three goaltenders that opened the season without a single collegiate start under their belts.
Quite a runOwner of the nation’s longest unbeaten streak to start 2009-10 (7-0-1), BSU has been on quite a run. But it gets more impressive when you take into account the second half of the 2008-09 campaign. Since Jan. 24, 2009, the team’s last 40 games, the Beavers have posted a 29-8-3 record--that’s a winning at an 77-percent clip!

His 24 saves led the Stars to a 5-4 overtime victory over St. Louis. Climie’s trip to the NHL makes six products of the Beaver Hockey program to skate in the NHL ranks. He joins former BSU teammate andrewMurray(2001-05) as the only other former Beavers currently in the NHL.
penalty-kill poWerThe current school mark for power-play efficiency is .868 and was posted by the 2004-05 squad when it squashed 192-of-221 opponent opportunities. In 2009-10, the team has allowed just 19 power-play goals on 112 opponent opportunities (.830), but has been downright stingy in CHA play. BSU has allowed just six power-play goals in 56 opponent opportunities spread over 10 league games (.893). The Beavers have allowed just two power-play goal in their last four games.

He’s settled into the top line and currently ranks second on the team with 14 assists, 7 goals and 22 total points. His 22 points rank him fourth among the NCAA’s top rookies.

turn tHe pageAfter going 11-2-1 through the first two calendar months of the season, Bemidji State was a meager 2-2 in the month of December. Statistically speaking, BSU has struggled in December, winning just 22 of 60 games since moving to the NCAA Division ranks prior to the 1999-00 season. January however has traditionally been good to the Beavers. BSU has won 67-percent of its games in January since 1999-2000 (37-26-6).

climBing Bsu’s division i assists listBradHunt has accumulated 39 assists in a season and a half. He is currently tied with 2009 graduate Cody Bostock and Bryce Methven (2000-04) for 12th on BSU Division I-era assists list. He needs six assists to move past Peter Johnson for 11th.
Bak-stopping tHe BeaversDan Bakala enters this weekend’s series second in the nation with 12 wins, ranked fifth among all goaltenders with a .927 save percentage, a five in goals against aver-age (2.00), while backstopping a team that ranks second in scoring defense at 2.05 goals per game.
Bsu versus tHe nationally rankedBSU has had just one meeting with a nationally-ranked opponent in 2009-10. Nov. 27, the Beavers knocked off then-No. 1 Miami (Ohio) 3-2. Since the Bea-vers made the jump to the NCAA Division I ranks for the 1999-2000 campaign, BSU is 5-36-2 versus teams in the top-15 according to USAToday/USA Hockey Magazine and are 1-1 versus a ranked UMD squad winning 3-1 at home Nov. 14, 2003 before dropping a 3-2 game the following night at the DECC.
Bsu versus tHe WcHaThis season, BSU is 1-3 versus teams hailing from the WCHA. BSU split a series with Minnesota Nov. 14-15 before being swept by Minnesota State Dec. 11-12. Since breaking into the Division I ranks in 1999-2000, the Beavers are 16-49-3 versus the WCHA.

C onventional sports wisdom has long contended it is never wise to fol-low a legend. However, sporting a remarkable laundry-list of achieve-ments after eight years as head coach at Bemidji State, it appears Tom
Serratore is more than comfortable in the role. The legacy Serratore was asked to continue upon accepting the role as Be-midji State’s seventh head coach in 2001 is one of the finest in all of collegiate athletics. Serratore walks by the trophy case running the length of the John Glas Fieldhouse concourse on his way to practice each day, in full view of the 13 small-college national championship trophies enshrined therein, trophies won by future hockey Hall of Fame member R.H. “Bob” Peters. Serratore not only had the challenge of inheriting one of the true dynasties in the history of collegiate athletics, he also was called to oversee its growth into a Division I program. While Serratore will be the first to admit he’ll not be able to replicate Peters’ achievements, there can be little doubt the program is in the right hands. BSU finished 4-26-4 in 2000-01, the year before Serratore took control of the program. He led BSU to a 12-18-5 record during his rookie campaign, and has increased BSU’s win total each of the four years that followed. BSU finished 23-13-1 in 2004-05, giving the Beavers a school-record for wins in a Division I season and back-to-back 20-win campaigns for the first time as a Division I program. In 2008-09 Serratore led the Beavers through the regular season to post their fourth CHA championship in six years before their third CHA Tourna-ment championship, the program’s first NCAA Division I Tournament victory and a chance represent the university and the CHA in the Frozen Four for the first time. Under Serratore’s guidance, 23 BSU skaters have earned All-CHA honors, including two-time First-Team All-CHA picks Marty Goulet (2002-03), Bryce Methven (2003-04), Matt Climie (2006-07), Travis Winter (2006-07 and Cody Bostock (2007-08) with three Beavers earning CHA Rookie of the Year laurels. BSU has had multiple skaters named First-Team All-CHA six of the last seven seasons, including a school-record three first-teamers in 2003. Academic excellence has been a staple of the BSU program under Serratore. The Beavers had a CHA-record 18 skaters named Academic All-CHA in 2008, and under Serratore’s guidance have a league-high 116 Academic All-CHA picks over the last eight years. Niagara is second with 90 selections in the same span. In addition, BSU has had eight CoSIDA Academic All-District V selections under Serratore, including 2005 First-Team Academic All-America selection Peter Jonsson. Serratore’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. He is a four-time CHA Coach of the Year, winning the honor in 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009 and in eight years as a collegiate head coach he has been named a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the American Hockey Coaches Association’s National Coach of the Year, five times, including a runner-up finish in 2009. Serratore took the reigns as the seventh head coach at Bemidji State in 2001 after having spent the previ-ous three seasons as the associate head coach for Peters.

BeMiDJi,Minn. -- DanBakala (So., G, Calgary, Alberta) turned away 20 shots andianLowe (Jr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba) scored the first game-winning goal of his collegiate career Friday as the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team opened the 2009-10 season with a 3-1 victory over the United State Air Force Academy at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. In a continuation of a series that has traditionally been all Bemidji State, the Beavers rebounded from a rare pair of road losses a the hands of the Fal-cons a year ago, with a commanding performance versus Air Force tonight. The Beavers held a 22-10 advantage in shots on goal through two periods and a 28-21 edge in the game as BSU improved to 24-8-2 all-time versus the Falcons and 15-1-2 versus USAFA at the Glas. BSU dominated play, especially early, winning battles in the corners, earning face off victories and beating USAFA to loose pucks. Senior captainChrisMcKelvie (New Brighton, Minn.) was the first to see the fruits of that steady hustle when he opened the scoring midway through the first period, one-timing a pass from JamieMacQueen (So., F, St. Thomas, Ontario) into the back of the net. LinematetylerLehrke (Sr., F, Park Rapids, Minn) was credited with his first assist of the season after starting the play with a pass out of a scrum on the boards. Taking a 1-0 lead into the second period, the Beavers would stretch their lead to 2-0 a the 9:47 mark of the frame when newcomer JordanGeorge (Fr., F, Verona, Wis.) found Lowe streaking down the slot for a one-timer over the left shoulder of the Air Force goaltender Andrew Volkening. MattRead (Jr., G, Ilderton, Ontario), BSU’s leading-scorer in 2008-09, extended his scoring streak to seven games with an assist on the play. RyanCramer(Jr., F, International Falls, Minn.) put the Beavers up 3-0 with just over five minutes to play netting his first goal since Feb. 15, 2009 to close out the BSU scoring effort. Eric Artman would snap a wrister shot from between the circles past Bakala to get the Falcons on the board with 1:49 to play. The goal would spoil Bakala’s run at a shutout, but it was too little, too late for Air Force as the Beavers protected their home ice and sent the electric following of 2,148 in attendance home with smiles on their faces and a win in their pocket. The subplot of the Beavers-Falcons series is the sibling rivalry of the teams’ head coaches. Younger brother tomSerratore got the best of his older brother Frank, a 1982 graduate of Bemidji State and former goaltender for the Beavers, for the 19th time in 24 career meetings (19-3-1) and for the first time since USAFA left College Hockey America for Atlantic Hockey fol-lowing the 2006-07 campaign.

BeMiDJi,Minn. -- MattRead (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) recorded a career-high four points as the Bemidji State men’s ice hockey team completed the series sweep over the United State Air Force Academy, 7-3. The Beavers jumped out to a 4-1 lead after just 12:24 in the fast-paced, heated battle between the former College Hockey America foes, and would hold the pedal to the floor to post seven goals for the first time since a 7-5 triumph over Wayne State Feb. 29, 2008. A smorgasbord of goal scoring, the match up featured even-strength, power-play, short-handed and unassisted goals. In all 10 Beavers got in on the scoring. In addition to Read’s career night, aaronMcLeod (Fr., F, Ottawa, Ontario), BradyWacker (Fr., D, Jansen, Saskatchewan) and JordanGeorge (Fr., F, Verona, Wis.) each registered their first collegiate goal in the victory. RyanCramer (Jr., F, International Falls, Minn.) got the scoring started 4:13 into the game on passes from SheaWalters (So., F, Hibbing, Minn.) and BenKinne (So., F, St. Paul, Minn.). The goal, already the second of the junior’s season, matched his total from the 2008-09 campaign. But the BSU lead would be short-lived. Just 21-seconds later, AFA’s Jacques Lamoureaux evened the score at 1-1. Twenty-four hours removed from a contest during which the BSU de-fensive pairings were held without a single point, a pair of blueliners put the Beavers in front for good. Wacker netted his first lamplighter in the green and white at the seven-minute-mark on a seeing-eye bullet from the point with help from tylerLehrke (Sr., F, Park Rapids, Minn.) and Chrispeluso (Sr., Wadena, Minn.). BradHunt (So., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) re-corded his first point in the waning moments of the Beavers’ second power-play opportunity, marking BSU’s first special teams goal of the season. Read picked up his first assist of the night on the play. The first goal of Read’s junior campaign came 1:06 later when the Fal-cons’ goaltender, Andrew Volkening, misplayed the puck and left the Bea-vers’ leading scorer with an open net for his fourth career short-handed goal. Air Force was the first to strike in the second stanza. Jeff Hajner took advantage of a five-minute major penalty that sent Walters to the showers early, for his first marker of the season just 46 seconds in to the power-play opportunity, effectively cutting the Beavers lead in half, 4-2. It was Read again who stretched the BSU advantage to three goals midway through the period. The junior benefited from a battle in front of the AFA bench won by Cramer. The International Falls, Minn. native swept the puck up the boards into the neutral zone, where Read picked it up, skated it into the zone and beat Volkening for the second time of the night. The BSU lead would swell to four goals, 6-2, at the 12-minute mark when George, who was positioned on the left post, stuffed a Hunt rebound past the Falcon goaltender on the power play, ending Volkening’s night after 32:12 of play. AFA would add a third goal in the opening minute of the final frame, but McLeod, in just his second collegiate game, would pick off an errant pass on the Falcons’ blue line and register an unassisted goal to seal the Beavers’ non-conference win. DanBakala (So., G, Calgary, Alberta) turned away 21 AFA shots and allowed three goals en route to his second collegiate win in as many nights.

MaRQUette,Mich.(Berry Events Center) -- Down 3-2 with just 10.6-sec-onds left in the game, sophomore forward Ben Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.) nudged the puck past Brian Stewart from a scrum in front of the net to even the score to 3-3 and help the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team salvage a tie in a series-opener at Northern Michigan University’s Berry Events Center Friday. BradHunt(So., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) and JordanGeorge (Fr., F, Madison, Wis.) each contributed their second points of the night on the play, while netminder Dan Bakala (So., Calgary, Alberta) piled up 25 saves to improve to 2-0-1 on the season. Trailing the Wildcats 2-1 after 40 minutes of play, it was George’s power-play goal at 3:18 in the third that sparked the Beavers’ come-from-behind win. Bemidji State began the third period on the man advantage for 4:01 and after a flurry of shots, the freshman potted his second goal of the season, with 1:17 remaining on the penalty (2-2). “I think it would have been mothballs if we would not have scored there,” said BSU head coachtomSerratore after the game. “That can really deflate you if you don’t score [on a five-minute major] when you are down 2-1 in the third period on the road.” The Beavers would go on to out shoot NMU 12-5 in the third, pulling Bakala with 1:06 left to set up the Kinne extra-attacker, equalizer 56-seconds later. “Northern Michigan is a good team boy,” commented Serratore. “There is no question there were times that we were a little flat-footed, but over all I thought it was a great tie...a terrific night. I am very proud of the guys. I thought they played with a lot of heart and a lot of want-to in the third period.” The Wildcats struck first catching the Beavers while they shook off the rust after the week off. Billy Smith pushed his first goal of the season past Bakala on a pass from Mark Oliver just 1:30 into the game. But the goal would serve as a wake up call to BSU. Captain ChrisMcKelvie (Sr., F, New Brighton, Minn.) forced a turnover just over a minute later andJamieMacQueen (So., St. Thomas, Ontario) flipped a backhand over the shoulder of Stewart for the first lamplighter of his sophomore season to knot the score at 1-1 (2:49). Stuck killing eight minutes worth of penalties in the seconds period, the Beavers were simply never able to generate any offense. Northern Michigan held a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal in the period and took advantage of a penalty to MacQueen to get a goal from Ray Kaunisto at the six-minute mark to give the hosts a 2-1 lead heading into the third period. BSU would battle back to tie the game twice in the final stanza on goals from George and Kinne. Despite peppering the Wildcat goaltender in the third period, the Bea-vers were out shot for the first time this season, 28-26. On an Olympic ice sheet, like the Berry Events Center, special teams can often be the difference in the game, but tonight, both teams were whistled for six penalties and each converted one power-play opportunity to finish 1-for-6. With a goal and an assist on the night, George registered the first multi-point game of his young collegiate career. Hunt, turned in his sixth multi-assist effort in the first 40 games of his career to move into a three-way tie for the team lead with three assists.

(Berry Events Center) -- Mathieu Dugas (Fr., G, L’Assomption, Quebec) turned away 13 shots to shut out Northern Michigan University in his collegiate debut and help the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to a 5-0 victory over the Wildcats Saturday at the Berry Events Center. The Beavers turned in one of their more impressive performances in recent memory. BSU scored goals on its first two shots on net to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission and then clamped down defensively allowing just 13 shots on goal in the game en route to the five-goal non-conference victory. “This was a great effort. I am very proud of the way we played,” com-mented Bemidji State head coach tomSerratore following the game. “You look back, over the course of the last ten years in Division I, at some of our most gratifying wins and this ranks right up there. This is not an easy place to play. Its tough to get one point out of Marquette, let alone three.” Serratore went on to say, “It’s how we did it. We were stingy defensively and our guys played with a ton of jam. I am very proud of our guys.” ChrisMcKelvie (Sr., F, New Brighton, Minn.) got the scoring started with a shorthanded goal at 3:19 of the first period. tylerLehrke(Sr., F, Park Rapids, Minn.) was credited with assists on the eventual game-wining goal--the first of McKelvie’s career. The goal drew the curtain on Stewart’s night after allowing four goals on 20 shots. Read collected his second assist of the game on the play. McKelvie bookended BSU’s scoring at the 12:07 mark. He stepping in front of a pass and used his speed to flat out beat the NMU defense down the ice before flipping a backhand into the back of the net. Credited with the win in his first appearance in the green and white, Du-gas became just the third BSU goaltender to post a shutout in his collegiate debut. He finds himself in pretty good company joining Beaver greats Jim Scanlan (1978-82) and Matt Climie (2004-08) on the exclusive list. “This was great for Mathieu,” said Serratore. “We’ve got a lot of inexpe-rience this year but I think we’ve had some great goaltending. Danny Bakala has been outstanding and Mathieu played great today.” Serratore added, “I thought he was very poised in the net.”

HUntSViLLe,ala.(VonBraunCenter)--It may not have been pretty and it may have taken extra time to finally settle it, but a win is a win in the season standings and tonight the No. 14 Bemidji State men’s ice hockey team found a way to protect its unblemished record and open the 2009-10 College Hockey America season with a 2-1 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville at the Von Braun Center. Junior MattRead (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ont.) added to his team lead in scoring providing all of the offense for the Beavers, bookending the game with a pair of goals--his second multi-goal night of the young season. Read and the nation’s top-scoring offense wasted little time before get-ting on the board, but a funneled puck that found its way to the back of the net on the Beavers’ first power-play opportunity of the night was all BSU could muster in regulation. A second period plagued with penalties made it tough for either team to generate any kind of offensive momentum as the Chargers were whistled for five penalties and the Beavers were pegged for four. Ala.-Huntsville out shot the Beavers 13-8 in the period, en route to a 30-22 advantage in the game, but BSU goaltender DanBakala (So., Calgary, Alberta) was sharp between the pipes keeping UAH off the scoreboard. After playing a good portion of the second frame with their special teams units on the ice, the teams began to find flow in the third as not a single penalty was called. The Chargers were the first to benefit from consis-tent five-on-fine play when Neil Ruffini knotted the game with his third goal of the season on a pass from Brennan Barker at the 3:44 mark of the period. After struggling to impose its normal pace and style of play for the 60 minutes of regulation, the Beavers dominated the overtime period from the opening face off. BSU out shoot UAH 3-0 with the final attempt by Read standing as the difference maker. Ryanadams (Jr., D, Deloraine, Manitoba) started the play in transition hitting Read who broke the seam between a pair of defensemen caught in a change and skated into the slot, hesitated to the right enough to get UAH goaltender Cameron Talbot off balance and bounced the puck off his leg to give the Beavers the victory. “It was kind of ugly but we won’t apologize for it.,” commented Bemidji State head coach tomSerratore. “You’ve got to win games like this and I am glad we found a way to win, but we’ve got to be better than this.” After scoring on its first shot on the man advantage, BSU failed to score on its next six chances to finish the game 1-for-7. The Chargers also strug-gled on the power play finishing 0-for-6. Bakala picked up his third collegiate win stopping a career-high 29 shots, while allowing just one goal, in 63:44 of action. He improved to 3-0-1 on the season. Talbot was tagged with the loss allowing two goals in 63:34. He made 20 saves in the game but fell to 3-4-0.

HUntSViLLe,ala.(VonBraunCenter)--It was Déja Vu all over again. For the second straight game, Bemidji State University and University of Alabama-Huntsville found themselves locked in a 1-1 tie after 60 minutes of play. And just as they had 18 hours earlier, the Beavers found the back of the net in overtime to gain a 2-1 victory and completed the College Hockey America sweep over the Chargers Sunday at Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala. This time Ben Kinne (So., F, St. Paul, Minn.) played the role of the hero. The sophomore picked up a UAH turnover on his own blue line, sliced through the Chargers’ defense and fired a slap shot over Cameron Talbot’s shoulder to clinch the game for BSU just 61 seconds into the extra frame. The overtime victory keeps the Beavers’ six-game unbeaten streak in tact at 5-0-1. In addition to sharing the nation’s longest unbeaten streak with Alaska (5-0-1), BSU is off to its best start since the team went 11-0-0 to open the 1984-85 campaign. Despite the absence of goals during the opening 40 minutes of play, there was no lack of scoring opportunities. The Chargers held a 12-9 lead in shots after the first period and a 24-19 advantage after two, but the goal-tenders were sharp and their stingy play set up a third-period battle for two points in the College Hockey America standings. Kevin Morrison scored his second goal of the season to put the Char-gers up 1-0 just 1:31 into the final 20-minute stanza with help from Cody Campbell and Andrew Coburn. The goal put Bemidji State on its heels and left the visitors just 18:29 from a series split and their first loss of 2009-10. But just as he has all season MattRead (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) came through in the clutch. The junior recorded his third goal of the weekend at the 9:29 mark, picked off a UAH pass on the fore check, skated to the net, beat Talbot with a hesitation move and delivered the unassisted equalizer. Each team went on the power-play one last time in the game’s final 10 minutes, but the goalies proved to be impenetrable and for the second time in an many contests and the third time in four games, the Beavers were headed to overtime. BSU began the five-minute, sudden death period on the man advantage for the first 40 seconds, but it was UAH that got the best scoring chance, short-handed, forcing DanBakala (So., G, Calgary, Alberta) to make his career-high 31st save to keep the Beavers’ hopes alive. Just seconds later, a turnover in BSU’s defensive end would spark a Bemidji State rush and Kinne lifted the puck past Talbot to seal the win. A total of eight penalties were called in the game, but special teams were a non-factor as BSU failed to score on three power-play opportunities, while UAH came up empty on five tries. Bakala’s fourth career victory extends his personal unbeaten streak to five games, 4-0-1, and accounted for BSU’s fifth win. He finished the weekend 2-0-0 with 60 saves and just two goals allowed in 124:45 between the pipes. Talbot made 20 saves Sunday, but took the loss and falls to 3-5-0 on the season. The Beavers have now needed extra time to decide their fate in three of their first six games and remain unbeaten in overtime this season posting a 2-0-1 record.

BeMiDJi,Minn.-- (John S. Glas Fieldhouse) -- The No. 12 Bemidji State men’s Ice hockey team continues to find ways to win. After simply out scoring their opponents in the opening weeks of 2009-10, it was the Beavers’ defense that gave them the edge Saturday at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. Sophomore goaltender Dan Bakala (Calgary, Alberta) turned away 23 shots en route to a 2-0 College Hockey America victory over Robert Morris University. The shutout was the first of the sopho-more’s collegiate career, the second of the season for BSU and helped the Beavers improve to 6-0-1, the team’s best stretch to open a season since it went 11-0-0 in 1984-85. Goals were not easy to come by during the first two periods of action. Despite holding a 26-17 advantage in shots through 40 minutes, the Beavers were unable to solve Brooks Ostergard and it may have been the Colonials that had the best scoring opportunity. Thirteen minutes into the second pe-riod, Bakala moved to the right post to make a save, but was unable to corral the loose puck leaving the net wide open for J.C. Velasquez. Just as the winger fired the shot, BSU defender BradyWacker (Fr., Jansen, Sas-katchewan) dove across the crease and deflect the shot wide to preserve the scoreless tie. The Beavers took the first lead of the contest 8:23 into the final period. Jakeareshenko (Fr., D, Port Cocquitilan, British Columbia) recorded his first point in a BSU sweater starting the play with a pass out of the corner and up the boards to fellow rookieJordanGeorge (Fr., F, Madison, Wis.). The forward then threaded a pass to MattRead (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) just inside the Beavers’ offensive zone and Read fired a shot over the left shoul-der of Ostergard and into the back of the net. The goal, which would stand as the difference maker, is the junior’s team-leading third game-winning goal of the season. With 43 seconds to play, RMU head coach Derek Schooley pulled Os-tergard in favor of the extra attacker, but the plan would backfire. BSU blue-liner Chrispeluso (Sr., D, Wadena, Minn.) picked off a pass and the duo of George and Read would hook up again with 23 seconds left on the clock to solidify the win, 2-0. It was George’s third goal of the season. The power-play was a non-factor in the game as the Beavers were 0-for-3 on the man advantage and RMU was scoreless on four chances and managed just two shots on net on the power-play. Bakala improves to 5-0-1 on the season with the win and is 3-0-0 in CHA play. In his last three outings, he has posted three victories, allowed a goals against average of 0.65 and has a save percentage of .976. Ostergard finished with 37 saves, allowed one goal and was tagged with the loss, dropping his season record to 1-4-0.

BeMiDJi,Minn.-- (John S. Glas Fieldhouse) -- The nationally-ranked Bemi-dji State University men’s ice hockey team swept College Hockey America foe Robert Morris University Saturday at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse, 6-1, enlisting scoring help from 13 different skaters. The victory brings the Beavers’ record to 7-0-1 overall and 4-0-0 in CHA play, while it extends their NCAA Division I-leading unbeaten streak to eight games. Undefeated through its first eight games, BSU is off to its best start since the 1984-85 squad opened the season 11-0-0. For the seventh time in eight games, the Beavers were first to light their side of the scoreboard and once head coach Tom Serratore and his crew got the ball rolling, they didn’t look back. DarcyFindlay(So., F, Bristol, Quebec) opened the scoring, netting his first goal of the season 8:46 into the first period. emilBillberg (Jr., Stock-holm, Sweden) and BradHunt (So., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia), who each posted multi-point nights, were each credited with an assist on the play. While the multi-point night was the first of Billberg’ career, Hunt’s three-assist outing is the third of the season and the 12th of his career. Bemidji State built a 3-0 lead midway through the second when tylerLehrke (Sr., F, Park Rapids, Minn.) and ianLowe (Jr., F, Bradwardine, Mani-toba) potted goals separated by 1:48. RMU got an odd goal to break up the shutout before time would expire on the second period. A Denny Urban shot touched both posts and after a conference by the crew of officials, the Colonials were credited with a power-play goal and the teams skated to the third period with the Beavers ahead 3-1. The power-play marker was the first allowed by the Beavers in CHA play this season, snuffing out their opponents’ first 15 man-advantage opportunities. The floodgates opened for BSU during the final 20 minutes. Already up by two goals, the Beavers added three more in the final stanza to win the game going away. MattRead (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) put an end to the Beavers’ power-play slump netting his team-leading seventh goal of 2009-10 just 45-seconds into the third. The goal extended the junior’s scoring streak to five games and stood as his second point of the night and 22nd multi-point effort of his career. Down 4-1, just 1:36 into the third, Robert Morris was supplied with its best opportunity of the night. BSU forward JamieMacQueen (So., St. Thomas, Ontario) was whistled for a five-minute, high-sticking penalty set-ting up with a five-minute RMU power-play opportunity, but the BSU pen-alty-kill unit stood strong keeping the Colonial scoring opportunities to a minimum to protected the three-goal lead. Rookie JordanGeorge (Fr., F, Madison, Wis.) potted his second goal in as many nights to put BSU up 5-1 with 2:39 to play. MinneapOLiS,Minn.(Mariucci Arena) -- The No. 7 Bemidji State Univer-sity men’s ice hockey program felt the sting of defeat for the first time of the 2009-10 season Saturday as the University of Minnesota, buoyed strong special teams play, handed the Beavers a 4-1 non-conference loss at Mari-ucci Arena. “Overall I thought it was a pretty good hockey game,” said BSU head coach tomSerratore. “Did we put 60 minutes together? Obviously not.” As always, special teams play was the difference. The Beavers were whistled for eight penalties and allowed a pair of power-play goals while failing to convert any of their four man advantage opportunities. “[Minnesota] won the special teams battles tonight and typically the team that wins the special teams battles wins the games.” The Beavers were the first to strike. JordanGeorge (F, Madison, Wis.) picked up a loose puck just inside the Beavers’ offensive zone, skated onto the doorstep alone and beat the Minnesota goaltender Alex Kangas one-on-one with a flip over his left shoulder just 2:03 into the game. But the lead would not last long. After BSU netminder,DanBakala (So., Calgary, Alberta) denied the Golden Gophers on two point-blank shots, Nico Sacchetti found the puck unattended sitting on the goal line and put his first goal of the season in the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1. The Beavers’ water-tight penalty-kill unit was put the test early in the second. At the 3:52 mark of the period, Chrispeluso(Sr., D, Wadena, Minn.) was sent to the penalty box to join emilBillberg (Jr., F. Stockholm, Sweden), who was just 46 seconds into his penalty, giving the Golden Gophers a five-on-three advantage for 1:14. Minnesota would capitalize 45 seconds into the power-play with a Mike Hoeffel goal. Then its was Bemidji State’s turn. Four Minnesota infractions win the span of 57 seconds gave the Bea-vers 2:27 of five-on-three play midway though the second stanza. RyanCramer (Jr., F, International Falls, Minn.) got the BSU faithful out of their seats in a hurry when a wrister that rang of the right post slid along the goal line and through the crease, but that was all the Beavers would muster. BSU put six shots on goal, but Kangas stood strong and with every save, momentum grew for the Gophers. Although BSU had its chances in the final 30 minutes of play, it would never recover. The Gophers took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission and piled on two goals in the third to move to 4-4-1 on the season. Minnesota used the win to continue its dominance in a series that got its start early in the 2000-01 season. Seven times the Beavers have gone head-to-head with the Gophers and seven times BSU has come up short. Bemidji State finished the game 0-4 on the power-play while the Bea-vers’ penalty-kill unit allowed two goals for the first time since Mar. 7, 2009--a streak spanning 12 games. Bakala took the loss, allowing all four Minnesota goals, while piling up 25 saves in 60 minutes of work. He moves to 6-1-0 following his first col-legiate loss. Kangas turned away 21 BSU shots on goal and allowed just one goal improving to 4-3-0 with the victory.

MinneapOLiS,Minn.(Mariucci Arena) -- It was bound to happen. Minnesota could not hold off Bemidji State forever and tonight, the Beavers’ had their number called. After dropping the first six meetings of the all-time series, including game one of the series 4-1, seventh-ranked BSU secured its first victory over the Golden Gophers, 6-2, to leave Mariucci Arena with a series split. “It’s a monumental win. [Minnesota] is one of the premier teams in the country and obviously Minnesota’s Pride on Ice,” commented BSU head coach tomSer-ratore. “Anytime you can win a game in this building you take it. Mariucci Arena is a very difficult place to play. I am very proud of our guys.” When asked what the difference was between the play of the Beavers in to-night’s win and the loss last night, Serratore ironically attributed the team’s offensive explosion to its defense. “I thought the biggest thing we did tonight was that we defended extremely well. I thought we took the middle of the rink away and I think that led to a lot of our success.” For one reason or another, the Beavers have been better in the second game of a series this season coming in to the weekend averaging five goals per game--two and a half more per outing than in series openers. BSU hit the mark again tonight, surpassing its average as nine players found the scoring column and sophomore JamieMacQueen posted the first two-goal night of his career. SheaWalters got BSU on the board first when he picked off a pass on the Golden Gophers’ blue line, split the Minnesota defensive pair and placed a shot over the left shoulder of the Gophers’ goaltender Alex Kangas and into the back of the net. The un-assisted goal at the 8:02 mark of the first period was the first of the season for Walters. The Beavers extended their lead to 2-0 at the 19:20 mark of the first.MattReadfired a shot from the top of the circle that found its way through traffic past Kangas for his team-leading eight goal of the season. JordanGeorge assisted on the play. Despite being out shot 10-4 in the period, the Beavers skated to the locker room holding a 2-0 lead. With Kent Patterson replacing Kangas between the pipes to begin the second period, Minnesota cut the BSU lead to one goal at the 9:19 mark capitalizing on its third power-play opportunity of the game. Jordan Schroeder posted his second goal in as many nights one-timing a shot from the point that squeezed between BSU goaltender MathieuDugas and the right post. The goal put the Beavers on their heels as wave after wave of Golden Gopher scoring opportunities rolled in on the BSU goalie over the course of the next five minutes, but Dugas and the Beavers weathered the storm. Bemidji State caught the break it needed at the 6:10 mark of the period, when a major penalty was assessed to the Golden Gophers’ Zach Budish for checking from behind. The infraction put BSU on the man advantage for the next five minutes and set up the team’s third goal of the game--the eventual game-winner. MacQueen was credited with BSU’s first power-play goal of the series. Up 3-1 with 20 minutes to play, the Beavers opened the third period with a flurry. BradHunt, MacQueen and aaronMcLeod each scored during the first 3:04 of the final frame forcing Minnesota head coach Don Lucia to rotate the veteran Kangas back between the pipes. Patterson’s night came to an end after allowing four goals in 23:04, while posting just six saves and fell to 2-1-0 on the season. The Gophers closed the deficit to four, 6-2, midway through the third when Jake Hansen redirected a Kevin Wehrs’s shot from the top of the crease, but it was too little, too late as the Beavers cruised to the non-conference victory. Dugas sealed his second collegiate victory of the season stopping 25 Minne-sota shots, while allowing two goals, in 59:42. He improves to 2-0-0 in his career.

Glas Fieldhouse) -- The No. 8 Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team extended its home winning steak to eight games and remained undefeated after five games in College Hockey Amer-ica play Saturday with a 6-1 series-opening victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Eleven BSU players contributed scoring in the rout, but freshman Jor-danGeorge(F, Madison, Wis.) paced all Beavers posting his first collegiate three-point game, netting a goal and tacking on a pair of assists. Bemidji State jumped out to a commanding lead early, potting three goals in just 3:21 midway through the first frame. BSU’s leading scorer MattRead (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) got the ball rolling recording his team-best ninth goal of the season with help from George and ian Lowe (Jr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba) at the 13:21 mark. Forty-six seconds later, RyanCramer(Jr., International Falls, Minn.) buried his fourth goal of the season, the eventual game-winner, to put BSU up 2-0. Before the period was over, George found the back of the net with his six lamplighter of 2009-10 as Cramer and Read collected assists to send the Beavers to the locker room with a three-goal cushion. In a penalty-littered second period, it was the Chargers that capitalized on a BSU miscue to cut the BSU advantage to two goals when Brennan Barker scored UAH’s only power-play goal. The tally would come at the 13:16 mark of the period and account for all the scoring as UAH out shot BSU 14-8 in the frame. The Beavers would sandwich the Chargers’ second period marker be-tween three-goal periods as the team exploded for three more goals in the third, including a power-play tally, to put the game out of reach and power through to their ninth win of the season (9-1-1). Lowe, Jamie MacQueen (So., F, St. Thomas, Ontario) and captain ChrisMcKelvie (Sr., F, New Brighton, Minn.) accounted for BSU goals dur-ing the final 20 minutes. MacQueen’s power-play marker helped the Beavers to go 1-for-9 on the man advantage, while UAH scored on just one of its eight power-play opportunities. From there it was all DanBakala(Calgary, Alberta) and BSU’s staunch defense. The sophomore goaltender posted 25 saves, which included 13 in the final period alone, while allowing just one goal in 59:56 between the pipes to improve his record to 7-1-1 overall and 5-0-0 in league play. In ad-dition, the Beavers knocked down 19 shots in front of the netminder holding the Chargers to just 26 shots on net. BSU finished the contest with the slightest of leads on the shot board, 27-26. Cameron Talbot played 44:51 and allowed five BSU goals before being replaced by Blake MacNicol in the third period. The duo combined to save 21 shots with Talbot posting 17 in the loss. He falls to 3-8-0 on the season. The victory was the ninth consecutive versus Ala.-Huntsville and helps the Beavers to improve to 33-27-3 lead in the all-time series.

BeMiDJi,Minn.-- (John S. Glas Fieldhouse) -- BradHunt (So., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) scored three goals and added an assist to lead the No. 8 Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to a 6-3 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville Saturday in College Hockey Amer-ica (CHA) play at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. Hunt’s hat trick led an offensive surge by the BSU blue line as the Bea-vers’ defensive unit accounted for four goals and an assist in the win, while it stands as the first three-goal effort by a Beaver defenseman since Mar. 13, 2004 when John Haider scored three. Bemidji State looked sluggish out of the gates and its tentative play put the team in a hole early. Whistled for four penalties during the first 10 minutes, the Beavers gave Ala.-Huntsville a full 2:00 5-on-3 when Matt Read (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) and ianLowe (Jr., F. Bradwardine, Manitoba) went to the box at the 8:03 mark. The Chargers took a 1-0 lead just 26 seconds into the two-man advantage when Andrew Coburn put a rebound past MathieuDugas(L’Assomtion, Quebec). The goal would essentially serve as a wake up call for the Beavers. Ryanadams (Jr., D, Brandon, Manitoba) evened the score with his first goal of 2009-10 firing a bullet from the right face off dot at the 15:27 mark. RyanCramer (Jr., F, International Falls, Minn.) and SheaWalters (So., F, Hibbing, Minn.) were each credited with assists on the play. Less than two minutes later, Hunt would give the Beavers the lead, 2-1, on a slap shot from the point that found its way through traffic on the power-play. BSU would see its lead swell to 3-1 just 2:03 into the second period when Hunt netted his second marker of the game. But the two-goal cushion would last only 1:50 before Kevin Morrison posted his fourth goal of the season to reel the Chargers to within a goal, 3-2. But when Cramer and Read combined to post a pair of goals in just 20 seconds, BSU would not look back. UAH’s Cale Tanka netted a goal in the final minutes of the second, but Hunt would complete the hat trick with his second power-play goal of the evening just 3:16 into the third period to seemingly put the game out of reach. Despite holding a three-goal lead well into the third period, the Beavers left the door open for a Charger comeback. DarcyFindlay (So., F, Bristol, Quebec) was tagged with a major penalty that set UAH up with a 5:00 power-play. But the BSU penalty-kill rose to the occasion killing the entire penalty and slamming the door on the Chargers. The victory was the 10th consecutive versus Ala.-Huntsville and helped the Beavers to improve to 34-27-3 lead in the all-time series. Dugas collected his third win in as many collegiate starts Saturday post-ing a career-high 28 saves, while allowing three UAH goals in 60:00 minutes of action. He is now 3-0-0 on the season. The Chargers tried both goaltenders during the course of the game, but neither was able to solve the Beavers offensive attack. Blake MacNicol allowed three goals in 22:03 and made six saves before being replaced with Cameron Talbot. Talbot turned away 15 shots, but allowed three goals in the final 38 min-utes and fell to 3-9-0 with the loss. The Beavers’ special teams unit seemed to be firing on all cylinders Sat-urday as Hunt scored a pair of power-play tallies on four BSU opportunities (.500). The penalty-kill unit finished by snuffing out seven of the Chargers’ eight power-play chances (.875).

GRanDFORKS,n.D.(Ralph Engelstad Arena) -- They’ve done it again. The 2009-10 edition of the No. 6 Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team added yet another chapter to one of the most tradition-rich leg-acies in all of collegiate sport. The Beavers skated out of the Ralph Engelstad Arena with a 3-2 victory over No. 1 Miami University in the first game of the Subway Holiday Classic. The win versus the nation’s top-ranked RedHawks marked the first time BSU has knocked off NCAA Division I’s top team. With the score knotted at 2-2 after 56:41, senior captain ChrisMcK-elvie followed MattRead into the zone as a trailer, collected a rebound from the leg of Miami goaltender Cody Reichard and fired it into the back to account for the difference maker as he was being hauled to the ice by a RedHawk defender. The Beavers would protect the lead for the remaining 3:19 to post their 11th victory of the season. “There aren’t many guys in college hockey faster than Chris McKelvie,” BSU head coach tomSerratore commented after the game. “Chris sensed it, he saw it and he went. When you beat people to pucks, good things happen.” “All week we’ve been talking that this is the No. 1 team in the nation and we had to have our best game to show the nation that we are for real,” said Read. “It took 60 minutes but we had some play back to deal with tonight. I thought we played a good game and ended up on top.” The first period panned out just as you would imagine of a game between the nation’s top two defenses. A grand total of nine shots made it to the goal-tenders. Despite recording just two shots on goal during the period and trailing 7-2, the Beavers held a 1-0 lead over the RedHawks after 20 minutes. The Beavers captured their first lead at the 8:37 mark when DarcyFindlay stuck with a play and muscled a shot on goal despite being partially blocked. The puck bounced up and over the right shoulder of Reichard. Find-lay’s second goal of the season was assisted by freshman aaronMcLeod. Bemidji State went up 2-0 6:02 into the second. tylerLehrke corralled a rebound off McKelvie’s shot and buried his third goal of the season. The tally put the RedHawks down two goals for the third time this season and the first time since they were defeated by Michigan State University Oct. 24, 3-2 in overtime. The Beavers spent the much of the remainder of the period pinned deep within their defensive zone. The RedHawks piled up a 10-6 advantage on the shot board, but came up empty as DanBakala slammed the door on the Miami barrage to preserve the two-goal lead heading into the final 20 minutes of play. The RedHawks battled back to score the game’s first power-play mark-er taking advantage of a DanMacintyre interference call at the 14:13 mark. MU capitalized on the man advantage one minute, 11 seconds later (15:24) getting a Camper goal from the point. Just under three minutes later, MU got a second goal from Camper to knot the game at 2-2 and erase their largest deficit of the season. But with 3:19 to play, McKelvie was in the right place at the right time, netting his fifth goal of the season on the rebound. Miami won the special teams battle going 1-for-3 on the man advan-tage, while BSU failed so score on any of its four power-play opportunities. Bakala finished the night with 20 saves, including 10 in the second pe-riod alone to post his eighth victory of the season.

(Ralph Engelstad Arena) -- Twenty-four hours re-moved from knocking off the nation’s top-ranked team, Miami University (Ohio) 3-2, the No. 6 Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team stum-bled dropping a 2-1 nonconference match up to the Ohio State University in overtime. The Beavers wrapped up play at the Subway Holiday Classic at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. with a 1-1 record. For the tenth time in 14 games of 2009-10, BSU was first to light the scoreboard, but tonight, different than any of the previous nine occasions, the Beavers were not on the winning end when all was said and done. Ohio State battled back to tie the game in the second period and got an even-strength goal from Kyle Read, 48 seconds into overtime just seconds after a Buckeye power-play had expired to hand the Beavers their second loss of the season. Bemidji State’s fourth line accounted for all of its scoring on the night. aaronMcLeod (Fr., F, Ottawa, Ontario) netted his third goal of the season and second point of the of the weekend beating the Buckeyes’ Cal Heeter at the 17:29 mark of the first period. He was assisted on the play by DarcyFindlay (So., F, Bristol, Quebec) andRyanadams (Jr., D, Deloraine, Mani-toba) who also each recorded their second points of the classic. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, OSU evened the score, 1-1, with just 2:21 left in the second period. Ian Boots accounted for the goal, his first of the season, with help from Devon Krogh and Sean Duddy.A scoreless third period in which each team put eight shots on net, sent the Beavers to an extra frame for the fourth time of the season. Playing the first 45 seconds of overtime on the power-play, OSU pep-pered Dugas with three shots in 48 seconds. The last, off the stick of the Buckeyes’ Read found the back of the net. Glas Fieldhouse, holding off the Purple Eagles’ late charge to take a 3-2 College Hockey America victory. Senior captain ChrisMcKelvie (Sr., F, New Brighton, Minn.) led the way for the Beavers posting a goal and an assist. After a scoreless first period, McKelvie gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead just 1:53 into the second frame. The senior used his blazing speed to pick off a NU pass, beat the Purple Eagle defenders and stuff the puck past Chris Noonan for his six goal of the season. Ten minutes later, the Beavers would double their lead to 2-0 when tylerLehrke (Sr., F, Park Rapids, Minn.) left the puck on the door step for BenKinne (So., St. Paul, Minn.), who back-handed the puck into the Purple Eagles’ net for the Beavers’ only power-play marker of the contest. Bemidji State came into the game with a perfect 10-0-0 record in games in which it has taken a lead into the third period this season. Despite a bit of excitement late, BSU stayed perfect holding off NU to take the conference game 3-2. Giancarlo Iuorio cut the BSU lead in half, 2-1, 2:44 into the third pe-riod scoring an even-strength goal from Brendan Sheehan. But JamieMacQueen (So., St. Thomas, Ontario) would give the Beavers a two-goal cushion, netting what would eventually stand as the game-winning goal, at the 16:15 mark. Linemates Lehrke and McKelvie each collected their second points of the night adding assists on the play. Down 3-1, NU head coach Dave Burkholder elected to pull his goalten-der in the game’s final minutes for an extra attacker. The decision would pay off as Ryan Olidis potted his ninth goal of the season with just 43 seconds remaining in regulation, reeling the Beavers to within a goal, 3-2, but were unable to make up any additional ground and the Beavers skated away with the one-goal victory to complete their first series sweep over Niagara at home since 2002. Out shot 31-22 in a game that the Beavers struggled to generate any offensive rhythm, special teams played a big role in BSU’s win. The Beavers converted one of their three man advantage opportunities, while the team’s penalty-kill unit was flawless snuffing out all five of the Purple Eagles’ power-play opportunities. DanBakala(So., G, Calgary, Alberta) became the first goaltender in the country rack up 10 wins in 2009-10, turning away 29 NU shots to post his fourth consecutive victory. He used the win to improve to 10-1-1. Noonan was pinned with the loss and falls to 0-4-0 this season. He stopped 19 shots but allowed all three of the Beavers’ goals. The victory was BSU’s fifth straight versus Niagara and helped the team to come within a game of evening the all-time series, 19-20-8.

Glas Fieldhouse) -- Minnesota State University, Mankato handed the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team its first home loss of the 2009-10 season, using four power-play goals to defeat the No. 4 Beavers 5-1 Friday at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. With the score tied 1-1 6:40 into the third period, BSU’s MattRead (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) was whistled for a major penalty. The infraction set up a five-minute power-play opportunity for the visitors and they would make the Beavers pay. At the 8:40 mark Jerad Stewart would score the eventual game winner on the man advantage with help from Zach Harrison and Ben Youds, both of whom would end up with two helpers in the game. During the next 1:59, MSU would post two more power-play goals and Harrison would add another before the period was over to put the game out of reach for the Beavers. The Mavericks, who never trailed in the game, got a Tyler Thompson goal midway through the first period and held on to tote a 1-0 lead into the third. Bemidji State’s ianLowe (Jr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba) scored the Beavers’ only goal of the night to even the score to 1-1, 4:11 into the frame. BradHunt(So., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) and DanBakala (So., G, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) were credited with assists on the play. The point put an end to a five-game scoreless streak for Hunt, the Beavers’ top scoring defenseman, while it marked the first career helper for Bakala. The goal seemed to be the spark the Beavers needed. The team im-mediately began to pick up the pace, pepper the MSU goaltender with shots and fly around the rink challenging every pass with a hit. But that aggressive play cost the Beavers as Read was sent tot the box for elbowing. BeMiDJi,Minn. (John S. Glas Fieldhouse) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team was swept for the first time this season as Min-nesota State University followed its 5-1 rout Friday by holding the Beavers off, 3-2, Saturday to gain its second win in as many nights at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. Trailing 3-1 with just under two minutes to go in the game, the Beavers pulled their goaltender in exchange for an extra attacker. The gamble looked like it might pay off as JordanGeorge(Fr., F, Madison, Wis.) potted his sev-enth goal of the season to reel the Mavericks to with a goal with 63 seconds left, but that was all the Beavers could muster as they fell in back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 17 and 23 of last season. BSU jumped out to a lead just 54 seconds into the game. MattRead (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) stepped off the bench for his first shift of the game and into a MSU passing lane. After picking off the pass, Read skated past the Maverick defensive pair and placed a shot over the right shoulder of the MSU goaltender and into the back of the net. Minnesota State’s Eriah Hayes evened the score at 1-1 at the 4:29 mark of the period. He took a pass from Kael Mouillierat and Kurt Davis and fired a slap shot that MathieuDugas (Fr., G, L’Assomption, Quebec), the BSU goaltender, couldn’t handle and it dribbled in for a goal. Just 10 seconds into the second period, the game would swing in favor of MSU. BSU’s top scoring defenseman, BradHunt (So., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) was whistled for a checking from behind major penalty and was sent to the showers. The Mavericks took the lead just 35 seconds into the five-minute power-play opportunity on a Mouillierat tally. Minnesota State added to its lead in the third period. Michael Dorr con-verted a BSU turnover on the red line into the first goal of his career as he beat the BSU goaltender one-on-one. Dorr is the brother of Frannie Door, a senior forward on the BSU women’s ice hockey team. In the final minutes the Beavers would mount a comeback but would fall short, 3-2. BSU failed to score on five power-play opportunities on the night, while MSU converted one of three chances into a goal. The Beavers kept Austin Lee busy tonight out shooting MSU 31-14. Lee made 29 saves and allowed to goals in 60:00 minutes between the pipes. He improves to 7-5-0 on the season. Dugas takes his second loss of the season, falling to 3-2-0 after posting 11 saves and allowing all three Maverick goals. The loss marks the sixth straight to MSU matching a losing skid that stretched from Dec. 20, 1996 to Dec. 17, 2000 and stands as the longest streak without a win over the Mavericks since the series began in 1974. MSU still trails BSU 44-35-13 in the all-time series.

KaLaMaZOO,Mich.--(Lawson Ice Arena) -- For the first time in 54 years of storied collegiate hockey history at Bemidji State University, the Beavers skated to a 0-0 tie. Saturday the Beavers failed to score in 60 minutes of regulation and the five-minute overtime period, whileDanBakala (So., G, Calgary, Alberta) posted his second career shutout versus Western Michi-gan University in the scoreless tie at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. Bakala turned away 31 saves in the game, equalling a career-high set in a 2-1 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville Nov. 1 of this season. In addition to Bakala’s flawless effort between the pipes, BSU’s team defense came up with 11 blocked shots.BradyWacker(Fr., Jansen, Sas-katchewan) led all Bemidji State players with three blocks. Although the game officially goes in the books as a tie, Western Michi-gan earned bragging rights, taking the exhibition shootout, 2-1, in three rounds. The Beavers sent Matt Read (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario), JamieMac-Queen (So., F, St. Thomas, Ontario) and SheaWalters (So., F, Hibbing, Minn.) to the ice for the shootout. Read was stymied by a kick save from Riley Gill, who posted his eighth career shutout in the contest. Bakala re-sponded with a save of his own. Then MacQueen made good on his shoot-out attempt and the Broncos knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal form Max Campbell. Finally after Walters missed on his attempt, WMU’s J.J. Crew lit the lamp to send the WMU faithful home happy. Western Michigan held a slight edge on the shot board peppering Baka-la with 31 shots on goal, while the Beavers managed to fire 29 on target at the other end of the ice. The Beavers’ penalty kill unit got back on track holding WMU scoreless on three power-play opportunities after allowing five goals on eight opportu-nities in the series versus Minnesota State University Dec. 11-12. On the flip side, the Beaver power-play unit was held without a goal on four chances, managing just three shots on net. The BSU/WMU all-time series remains deadlocked at 2-2-1. Entering the series each team own a pair of wins in the rivalry (2-2-0) dating back to 2004.

KaLaMaZOO,Mich.--(Lawson Ice Arena) -- Water-tight goaltending and a potent power-play propelled the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to a 3-0 nonconference victory over Western Michigan University Sun-day at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. Sophomore goaltender DanBakala (Calgary, Alberta) turned away 26 shots en route to his second consecutive shutout, the third of his career, while BenKinne (So., F, St. Paul, Minn) matched a career-high by netting two goals and MattRead (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) and BradHunt(So., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) each pitched in three assists as the Bea-vers snapped a season-long three game winless streak (0-2-1) and improved to 14-4-2 on the season. Special teams play was pivotal in the Beavers’ 14th win of the season. A power-play that had been held scoreless in its last 11 opportunities, a streak spanning nearly seven periods, accounted for all of Bemidji State’s scoring on the afternoon as the Beavers were an efficient 3-for-6 on the man advan-tage. In addition to special teams offense, the Bemidji State penalty-kill unit snuffed out all five of the Broncos’ power-play chances to finish the weekend holding WMU scoreless on nine man advantage opportunities. After the first period of play, the score remained tied at 0-0, bringing immediate flashbacks of a game between the teams just 24 hours earlier that was played in its entirety without a single goal. But just 35 seconds into the second stanza, BSU’s junior winger ianLowe(Bradwardine, Manitoba) broke the scoreless streak after four periods with his career-best eighth goal of 2009-10 with help from Read and Hunt. The goal came with just eight seconds remaining on a power-play that carried over from a hooking infrac-tion called on WMU’s Tyler Ludwig late in the first period. Kinne put Bemidji State up by two goals at the 9:53 mark when he took passes for Hunt and Read and converted the Beavers’ fourth power-play chance of the afternoon into his fifth goal of the season. Bakala piled up 11 of his 26 saves in the period and kept the Broncos off the scoreboard as the Beavers skated to the locker room after 40 minutes of play up 2-0. Kinne added his sixth lamplighter of the campaign at the 11:01 mark of the third period to give Bemidji State a 3-0 advantage. Adding their third assists of the game on the play, Read set a new career-best, while Hunt equaled a personal-best of three helpers set Mar. 7, 2009 versus Robert Morris University. Bakala was again spectacular in net versus the Broncos posting back-to-back shutouts for the first time in his career as he improved to 11-2-2 on the season and climbed to third in the country in goals against average (1.71) and fourth in save percentage (.937). Jerry Kuhn was tagged with the loss after allowing three power-play goals while totaling 27 saves in 60:00 minutes of play. He falls to 1-3-1 on the season. The victory gives the Beavers an 3-2-1 edge in the all-time BSU/WMU series, while it improves the team’s record to 3-1-2 versus teams hailing from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

LeWiStOn,n.Y. (Dwyerarena) --All good things must come to an end. Tonight the Bemidji State men’s ice hockey team’s bid for a perfect College Hockey America season ended after eight games. A hard-nosed Niagara squad battled back from an early two-goal deficit to rattle off six consecutive goals and protect its home ice with a 6-4 league victory tonight at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, N.Y. Although No. 11 BSU opened the game with dominant play during the first 20 minutes and skated into the second period holding a 2-0 lead, Niagara tallied three unanswered goals in the second and piled up three more in the first 13:51 of the third to put the game out of reach for the Beavers. “The first period might have been one of our better periods of the year,” commented head coach tomSerratore. “Whether we self destructed after that, I don’t know. But once we took a few shortcuts and they converted on them, momentum began to shift.” “You knew those kids were going to play a better second period after that tough first period.” He added, “I wish we would have responded a little better, kept our foot on the gas and paid more attention to detail. But you have to give credit to Niagara. The bottom line is that they played with a lot of intensity, they took it to us in the second and third periods and they earned it.” It took the Beavers just 8:54 to get on the scoreboard. ianLowe (Jr., F, Brad-wardine, Manitoba) netted his ninth goal of the season with help from BradHunt(So., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) and SheaWalters(So., F, Hibbing, Minn.) just nine seconds into BSU’s first power-play opportunity of the evening. RyanCramer(Jr., F, International Falls, Minn.) fired a puck from the top of the right circle, through traffic and past the NU goaltender Chris Noonan, to stretch the Beavers’ lead to two goals just under 10 minutes later (18:06). The game’s first even-strength lamplighter and Cramer’s seventh of the season, sent Bemidji State to the locker room after the first stanza with a comfortable 2-0 lead. Maybe too comfortable. The Purple Eagles struck back at the 7:35 mark of the second to reel the Beavers to within a goal, 2-1. Paul Zanette fired a rocket that was initially saved by DanBakala (So., G, Calgary, Alberta), but C.J. Chartrain put the rebound past the BSU goaltender to get the hosting Purple Eagles on the scoreboard. Niagara evened the score, 2-2, at the 18:47 mark. Just 10 seconds after BSU newcomer JordanGeorge (Fr., F, Madison, Wis.) was whistled for slashing, the Bemidji State penalty-kill unit gave up its first power-play goal since Dec. 12--a streak spanning 203 minutes and two seconds. Thirty-two seconds later (19:12), Derek Foam scored to give NU its first lead of the game and swing the momentum to NU as the teams exited for the second intermission. Niagara would ride that wave of momentum into the third period piling three more goals onto their lead. Marc Zanette capitalized on a BSU turnover after a face off in their own zone to net the first of his game-high two goals on the night and Bryan Haczyk scored what would stand as the game winner 57 seconds later (5:53), before Zanette potted his second of the game to put NU up 6-2. Down four goals with just over six minutes to go in the game, the Beavers played with urgency. The team finished the period with a 21-6 advantage in shots on goal and got goals from George and Hunt in the final 90 seconds but it was too little, too late. George and Hunt led the way for the Beavers as each netted a goal and an as-sist in the loss. Niagara had five players garner two points in the game led by Marc Zanette’s two-goal effort. Bakala, who played just 45:53 and posted 23 saves before being pulled for Ma-thieuDugas (Fr., G, L’Assomtion, Quebec), was tagged with the loss after allowing five NU goals. He moves to 11-3-2 on the year.

Freshman BranceOrban (F, Lethbridge, Alberta) has put in his time at prac-tice, watched his teammates contribute and waited patiently for his turn to prove he belongs. Saturday, Orban got his chance and he made the most of it. In his first collegiate start, Orban, who found himself flanking the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team’s top line along side the Beavers’ top scorer MattRead (Jr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) and ianLowe (Jr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba), not only held his own, he led the Beavers to a 4-3 College Hockey America victory over Niagara University at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, N.Y. Orban notched a pair of goals, including the game winner, while adding an assist. “Brance is a smart player,” commented BSU head coach tomSerratore. “We put him in there with a couple other smart players in Matt Read and Ian Lowe forJordanGeorge(Fr., F, Madison, Wis.) and Brance filled in just great.” For the second consecutive night, the Beavers skated out to a 2-0 lead get-ting goals from a pair of unlikely contributors. Junior DanMacintyre (D, Fort Frances, Ontario) got the Beavers on the board 16:30 into the game firing a shot through traffic from the point for the first goal of his career. tylerLehrke (Sr., F. Park Rapids, Minn.) and ChrisMcKelvie (Sr., F, New Brighton, Minn.) were credited with assists on the even-strength goal. Just 12 seconds later (16:42), Orban found the back of the net with help from Read to put the Beavers up 2-0. A power-play opportunity in the final 90 seconds of the period set the Bea-vers up in position to take a three-goal lead to the locker room after 20 minutes of play, but a turnover in the neutral zone cost the Beavers that chance and Paul Zanette beat DanBakala (So., G, Calgary, Alberta) for a short-handed goal with 67 seconds to play in the first period. The teams skated off the ice for the beak with the Beavers leading 2-1. Twenty-four hours after opening the second period flat only to watch an early lead stolen from them, the Beavers exploded into the second period Saturday. It took Read just 1:57 to grab his team-leading 13th goal of the season as Orban collected the first assist of his career at BSU. BSU killed a 5-on-3 lasting 1:14 midway through the second, but the Purple Eagles would capitalize on a man advantage late in the period to stay within strik-ing distance, 3-2. Leading by a goal, Bemidji State opened the third period just as it did the second. Orban posted his second tally of the evening with help from Brady Wacker (Fr., D, Jansen, Saskatchewan) just 1:42 into the stanza. The goal, put-ting BSU up 4-2 would be a big one for the Beavers. It would stand as the game-winner after Ryan Oldis recorded his 12th goal of the season with just 6:09 left in regulation. Bakala and the Beavers held off a late charge by NU for a 4-3 win to salvage a series split. Bakala posted 26 save, including 14 in the final frame, to collect his 12th victory of the season. He is now 12-3-2. Chris Noonan turned away 27 BSU shots, but allowed four goals and was tagged with the loss. He falls to 4-7-0 on the season. The win allows the Beavers to climb to within a game of taking control of the all-time series with Niagara. NU owns a 21-20-8 advantage since the series began in 1999. The Purple Eagles may hold 14-8-3 record over the Beavers when playing at Dwyer Arena, the site of the final CHA Tournament Mar. 12-13, 2010, but BSU has won four of its last five on the NU’s home ice.
