About Minnesota Duluth: The Bulldogs are 17-8 overall and 12-6 in NSIC play to sit fourth in the conference standings. UMD are winners of its last three and four of its last five. The Bulldogs downed Upper Iowa Feb. 20 in a home game, 84-42. UMD is 9-3 at home and 7-2 in conference games. Senior Jheri Booker leads the team and the NSIC in points per game with 21.0 per contest. She also leads the squad in rebounds per game at a 8.2 clip.

Series History: The Beavers and Bulldogs have a rich history that dates back to 1968. UMD holds the all-time series lead at 29-54. BSU is 2-3 in the last five contests, falling earlier this sea-son at the BSU Gymnasium 69-56.

About Wayne State: The Wildcats are 21-4 overall and 14-4 in conference play to sit in a tie for second in the NSIC with Au-gustana College. WSC is the hottest team in the league, winning its last 10 games. Since BSU defeated the Wildcats Jan. 3, they are 12-1. WSC is undefeated at home in 2009-10, going 13-0, 9-0 in conference play. Sophomore Ashley Arlen is leading the team and is second in the NSIC in scoring with 19.0 points per game. Junior Mara Hjelle is averaging 14.2 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game. The Wildcats head to Southwest Minnesota State University Feb. 24 before hosting the Beavers.

Series History: The Wildcats own a 12-23 all-time advantage against BSU. The Beavers are 2-3 in the last five contests, win-ning the last battle at the BSU Gymnasium, Jan. 3, 83-79. Last Action: The Beavers fell to WSU Feb. 20 78-67 in their final home game of the BSU Gymnasium.

vs. Winona State - The Bemidji State University women’s bas-ketball team fell to Winona State University 78-67 in the final home game of the 2009-10 season. Freshman Shannon Thomp-son (G, Rosemount, Minn.) led BSU with 19 points in the North-ern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest. The Beavers (12-12 overall and 6-12 NSIC) held a 13-11 lead with 11:17 remaining in the first half, but WSU (15-10 over-all and 10-8 NSIC) tied the game on its next possession and then after a BSU turnover, the Warriors hit a 3-pointer which started a 10-0 run that put the Beavers down 21-13 with 9:40 left. Twelve of the 13 points by the Beavers came from 3-point land, two off the hands of Thompson. The early lead would be the last for the Beavers in the game, as the road team was able to hold off any BSU attempt at a comeback. The Warriors held a 42-33 lead at the half. BSU did threaten the WSU lead early in the second frame, starting on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to two at 44-42 with 14:32 remaining in regulation. The Beavers used four points

from junior center Colleen McKay (Barnum, Minn.), two from freshman Jessie Althoff (C, Becker, Minn.) and a 3-pointer from Thompson to get back in the game. BSU then stalled out at 42 and the Warriors scored seven unanswered points to regain a nine-point advantage. WSU’s lead reached double-digits for the first time of the half at 54-44 with 11:45 left. Four straight points from the Beavers cut the deficit to six, but the Warriors’ 3-ball continued to hit at opportune times, as two bombs hit and the lead was back to 12. Sophomore Sydney Epema (G, Crookston, Minn.) responded with a 3-pointer of her own to knock the lead back to nine with 8:21 showing on the clock. A 3-pointer by ju-nior guard Anna Hebrink (Austin, Minn.) got BSU within seven at 66-59, then after a WSU bucket, Hebrink responded again with a jumper to keep the Beavers alive. Unfortunately for the home squad, the seven-point deficit was as close as they would get, en route to the 11-point loss. The game was the final home contest for senior guard Kim Rosecrans (Crosby, Minn.). She started for BSU, scoring six points on 3-of-5 shooting, while leading the team and tying her career-high in assists with four. She added two steals and played in 19 minutes, which tied her season-high. Thompson was 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Althoff scored 17 points in the game, adding five boards and two as-sists. She has scored in double-figures a team-high 12 times this season. McKay led the team with nine rebounds. BSU and WSU both hit nine 3-pointers, but the difference was the Warriors at-tempted 18 and the Beavers shot 29, to BSU’s credit, a lot of those attempts came in the final four minutes in an effort to get back in the game. NSIC Preseason Poll: The Bemidji State women’s basketball team is ranked 13th in the 2009-10 edition of the Northern Sun Intercol-legiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released today by the league. The Beavers received 37 points after going 3-24 overall and 1-19 in NSIC play, tying them for 13th last season.

2-0 Start: The last time BSU started the season 2-0 was in 1999-00 with wins over Morningside and Middlebury. The Beavers have started 2-0 only eight times in the 43 years of the program.

4-1 after 5: BSU went 4-1 to start the season, earning its best record since the 1986-87 season. That squad also started 4-1 and finished with a 25-3 mark, making a run in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championships.

Triple-digits: BSU poured in 108 points in a 108-63 victory against Martin Luther College Nov. 20. The 108 points tied a all-time high for points in a game by a Beaver squad. It also marked the 12 game a BSU team has scored in triple-digits. The last time the Beavers scored 100 points and won was against the University of Minnesota-Morris, Feb. 22, 2003.

Extra Frames: The Beavers pushed the Dec. 4 game against MSU Moorhead to two overtimes before falling 75-66. BSU had only played four extra sessions in head coach Mike Curfman’s first four years at BSU. Two were against MSU Moorhead and the two were against Minnesota Duluth. The last time BSU played in a double overtime contest was during the 1984-85 season. The Beavers lost the game 74-73 at Minnesota Duluth.

No ‘I’ in Team: Eleven different Beavers have played in at least half of the conference games this season and 14 have seen the court. Nine players have recorded at least 100 points overall this season and 11 different players have scored in NSIC play.

Road Warriors: The Beavers are 5-5 on the road this season, 3-5 in the NSIC. Last season, BSU didn’t win a single road game and in the past 10 seasons, the most road wins the Beavers have accumulated in a season is five (2007-08 and 2002-03). BSU has recorded four NSIC road wins twice in the past 10 seasons (2006-07 and 2003-04).

NCAA National Stats: The Feb. 21 edition of the NCAA Division II national ranking summary placed the Beavers 31st in 3-point field goals per game (7.1 3-pointers per game), 48th in free throw percentage (74.2%), 51st in 3-point percentage (34.8%) and 52nd in scoring offense (72.5 ppg). Freshman Emily Kaus is 41st in blocks per game with 1.7 per contest. Sophomore Sydney Epema is 56th in 3-point field goal percentage at 37.3 percent and 73rd in 3-point field goals made with 2.2 per game.

When it Rains it Pours: Sophomore Taylor Davis poured in 31 points, in a performance off the bench, against St. Cloud State Jan. 8. The point total tied her for eighth on BSU’s top game scoring list with Mag-gie Gernbacher (vs. Colorado State-Pueblo, 2004-05). She was just eight points shy of tying the single game record, held by Amy Lawson (vs. MSU Moorhead, 2007-08). Davis established career-highs in points, field goals made and attempted (14-of-21) and minutes (31).

Mike Curfman is in his fifth year as head women’s bas-ketball coach for the Beavers. Curfman has directed

Bemidji State University to a 43-68 overall record (.387) in his four seasons while posting a 25-45 (.357) mark in the North-ern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Entering his fifth season as head coach, Curfman becomes the third-longest tenured coach in the program’s history, trailing only Doreen Zierer who coached 11 seasons (1990-2002) and Ruth Howe who coached the programs ‘first 10 seasons (1967-77). Curfman is tied for fourth on BSU’s all-time coaching victories list. He trails Zierer (129), Howe (95), Joan Campbell (70) and is tied with Mary McDonald (43). The 2008-09 season was the worst under Curfman as the team posted a 3-24 overall and 1-19 NSIC record. In the 2007-08 season, BSU finished with a 13-15 record under Curfman, going 9-9 in the NSIC to finish league play in sixth place. With 13 wins it was the third consecutive season the

Beavers have had 10 wins or more. The last time a Beaver squad had three consecutive 10-plus win seasons was from 1990-1993. Rejuvenating a program is nothing new to Curfman, he came to Bemidji State after six years at the helm of the University of Minnesota, Crookston program where three times during his tenure his teams set or equaled school records for wins (2000-01, 2001-02 and 2004-05) and racked up 55 victories during his final four seasons. While at UMC, he helped to elevate the program to the NCAA Division II level. After a 1-26 season in 1999-2000, Curfman directed the Golden Eagles to a school-record nine wins in 2000-01 and increased that record by16 the following year. In 2002-03, under Curfman,UMC made the NSIC tournament for the first time, cruising to the championship game before falling to NCAA Tournament bound University of Minnesota Duluth. Most recently his Golden Eagles tied for fourth place in the NSIC posting a league record of 8-6 while going 16-11 overall and making their first ever appear-ance in the North Central Regional Polls. He has mentored 10 All-Conference selections as a head coach including 2000-01 NSIC Newcomer of the Year and 2001-02 Player of the Year Jessica Forsline and was himself named as the 2002 NSIC Coach of the Year. Curfman’s teams have done equally as well in the classroom. During his tenure at UMC, the Golden Eagles posted at least a 3.0 team grade point average and finished in the Women’s Basket-ball Coaches Association’s Top 10 Academic National Rankings with a team G.P.A. of better than 3.4 in 2004-05. Previous to taking over the UMC program, Curfman was an assistant coach at St. Cloud State University (1994-99), serving as Dr. Lori Ulferts’ top assistant for five seasons. He also coached under Dr. Ulferts at Moorhead State University (1992-94) as an assistant while serving as the head coach of the junior varsity team. He has presented at a number of camps and clinics and is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the Minnesota State High School League Coaches Association. A native of Fosston, Minn., Curfman was an Academic All-America selection for the UMC bas-ketball team while earning his A.A.S. degree. He then moved on to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. where he graduated in 1992 with his B.A. in Business Administration while captaining the Cob-ber men’s basketball program. In 1994, Curfman earned his MBA in business administration from Moorhead State University (now Minnesota State University Moorhead) while acting as an assistant coach for the Dragons’ women’s basketball program. Curfman currently resides in Fosston with his wife Michelle, his son Caleb and his daughter Em-ily.

DULUTH, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team fell to University of Minnesota Duluth 82-63 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game played at Romano Gymnasium Wednesday.

The Beavers (12-14, 6-13 NSIC) never had a lead in the game, but battled in the first half. BSU got down early 9-1, as Minnesota Duluth came out of the gates hot, getting scoring from three different players. Junior Colleen McKay (C, Barnum, Minn.) and freshman Jessie Althoff (C, Becker, Minn.) got the Beavers back in the game scoring BSU’s first nine points, guiding the Beavers to an 8-2 run that made the score 11-9 in the favor of UMD. A 9-2 run by the Bulldogs put BSU back on its heels, giving the home tam a 20-11 lead. Freshman Shannon Thompson (G, Rosemount, Minn.) knocked down a 3-pointer with 10:42 remaining to cut the deficit to six at 20-14. With 7:16 reading on the scoreboard, BSU was down 24-20 after a jumper from sophomore Taylor Davis (F, Crookston, Minn.). Unfortunately for the Beavers, that would be as close as they would get to tying the game, as UMD went on a 6-0 run to take a 10 point lead, en route to a 13-point lead at the half. The Bulldogs led 40-27 after a 3-point dagger from UMD’s Jordanne Even dropped as the halftime buzzer sounded.

The Beavers didn’t quit in the second half and won the first 11 minutes of the frame 20-15 to cut the deficit to eight after a lay-up from freshman Emily Kaus (C, Eagan, Minn.) went through the hoop. BSU kept coming at UMD and the score was 59-52 with 7:50 remaining in regulation, as Althoff drained a 3-point shot. The Beavers were able to keep the deficit between nine and 11 all the way to 5:17 left on the clock. A 2:30 scoring drought by BSU led to a 17-point deficit with 2:43 remaining and the score at 73-56, leading to the eventual 19-point loss when the final horn went off.

Althoff was the top scorer for BSU, tallying 14 points for her team-leading 13th game in double-figures. Junior Anna Hebrink (G, Austin, Minn.) added 13 points. McKay had nine points, seven in the first half, adding five rebounds. Sophomore Samantha Baldwin (G, St. Thomas, N.D.) had a team-high six rebounds. BSU only have nine assists, just its fourth game this season with less than 10 helpers. Thompson had three to lead BSU. The teams went for a combined 47 turnovers, matching the give-away total from the last meeting between the two squads, Jan. 23 at BSU. UMD shot 54 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from 3-point land and 91.7 percent (22-of-24) from the line. The Beavers struggled, shooting 39 percent from the field, 41.2 from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (10-for-15) from the charity stripe. With one block in the game, Kaus now has 41 to sit third on BSU’s top season blocks list. She is one shy of tying for sec-ond.

The Beavers will close the 2009-10 season Feb. 27 at Wayne State College beginning at 4 p.m. Bemidji State University, located in Bemidji, Minn., is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
