Dear Friends,

A Cooke education offers students many things:

individualized academics, lasting friendships,

opportunities for leadership, and a strong network

of family support.

But perhaps Cooke’s greatest offering is a path toward

independence. In Cooke’s classrooms and out in the

community, our students are discovering their strengths

and passions so that they can determine for themselves

a future that is truly theirs.

From standards-based academics to inclusive arts

and sports programs to real-world internships, Cooke

students learn every day how to tackle life’s challenges.

In the pages of this report, we’ve shared with you some

of the ways our students are forging their own paths.

We are so grateful to you, our generous friends and

donors. Your contributions support not only our students’

independence, but Cooke’s financial independence as

well. Together, we are helping our kids take their

rightful place in the world.

With our heartfelt thanks,

Lon Jacobs Michael Termini, PsyDChairman President

PRESCHOOLResearch shows that inclusiveeducation is a highly effectivemodel—particularly in the earliestyears. Our preschool services takeplace in Manhattan and Brooklynpreschools so that children withspecial needs can grow and learnalongside their typically developingpeers.

Cooke’s signature preschool pro-gram is called Collaboration forInclusion. It works in partnershipwith Head Start centers anddaycare programs in some ofNew York’s most underservedcommunities. Cooke experts helpidentify children at risk for languageand learning delays, while helpingparents and teachers prepare allof their children for the challengesof kindergarten.

This fall, we signed a contract with the

nationally recognized Harlem Children’s Zone

to provide education and therapeutic services in

three of their Head Start and early childhood

centers on Lenox Avenue in Harlem. HCZ

approached us after seeing the good work we

are conducting for other Head Start programs

through Collaboration for Inclusion.

HARLEM CHILDREN’S ZONE

Collaboration for Inclusion is made possible thanksto generous, long-term leadership funding from theBernard F. and Alva B. Gimbel Foundation. Weare also grateful to the New York Community Trust, the Rose M. Badgeley Residuary Charitable Trustand Independence Community Foundation for theiradditional, generous support of this important project.

Four-year-old Robert knows he

can focus better when he has

something to hold in his hands.

After coaching from his Cooke

teachers at West Harlem Head

Start, he’s learned to grab a squeeze-

ball during class time — completely on

his own. “He’s taking it upon himself,” said

teacher Dan Feinman, “to get his body the

sensory input that he needs.” Now when

he sits down with his classmates, he’s ready

to learn.

Our lower and middle schoolstudents learn in Cooke classroomsin our general-education partnerschools, where they are welcomedas part of the school community.Individual attention and smallgroup learning allow children togrow according to their uniquestrengths. Cooke students joinin general-education academicclasses where appropriate, andparticipate in school-wide activi-ties such as music, physicaleducation and art.

For the first time this year, all Cooke middle

schoolers are learning under one roof at the

School of the Blessed Sacrament, offering

more social opportunities and community

service options for the pre-teen set.

And some of our little ones are now at Corpus

Christi School on W. 121st Street, a new

Cooke partner. “We are thrilled to have Cooke

here,” said Dorothy Valla, the school’s principal.

“The students are energizing,” she said. “And

our teachers are pleased with the cooperative

spirit that quickly developed between us and

the Cooke staff.”

NEW SPACES, SAME COOKE VALUES

When Emily first came to Cooke,

she struggled to climb the stairs

to her third-floor classroom.

But since she joined the New

York Road Runners Mighty

Milers program at school, all that

has changed.

During a six-mile outing last spring,

Emily, who has Down syndrome, chose to

join a group of walkers instead of taking the

bus back to school. “My mom is going to be

so proud of me,” she said, huffing and puff-

ing as she made her way. A huge smile

crossed her face when the kids beat the

buses back. Said Site Supervisor Elizabeth

Munz: “She just felt so good about herself.”

CHOOSING THEIR OWN PATHS

In addition to the program grants listed elsewhere, we receive generous unrestrictedgrants from foundations and corporations. We are grateful to News Corporation, the Pinkerton Foundation and Starr Foundation for their extraordinary leadershipgrants to Cooke. This support, together with additional funding from many othergenerous donors, helps us continue delivering services to children and familieswho would not otherwise receive them.

The Cooke Center Academy meetsa critical need for high schoolstudents with disabilities, whodo not have access to the sameschool choices as their general-education peers. In addition tostandards-based academics, theAcademy provides a typical highschool lifestyle complete witharts and athletics, studentgovernment and school dances.

From the day they enter asfreshmen, teens begin preparingfor an independent life aftergraduation. All students leavethe Academy with a concreteplan for the future.

CCA teens can now prepare for apartment life

in the school’s new Daily Living Lab, complete

with three full kitchens and a laundry station.

Lessons in the lab allow students to use their

reading, math and problem-solving skills in

preparing for independent living.

SOMEONE’S IN THE KITCHEN…

Cooke is enormously grateful for the leadership supportof The Moody’s Foundation, which, since 2003, hashelped us develop the Academy and serve increasingnumbers of high school students. Our students, familiesand faculty also gratefully acknowledge the generoussupport of the Grace J. Fippinger Foundation, theAmerican Express Foundation, the Children forChildren Foundation, and the Adrian & JessieArchbold Charitable Trust.

The Academy collaborates with dozens of

community partners to offer students in-

ternships and other real-word educational

experiences.

Brittany enjoys working with

children. “I like just getting to

know them,” she said, “and seeing

what their interests are.” She

hopes her internship at West

Harlem Head Start will lead to

a similar job after high school, like

several Cooke students before her.

Kelvin interns at NewsCorp, where he’s

learned to type, shred documents

and use a copy machine. Here

he’s seen holding his first pay-

check. “It feels good to get paid

for what you do!” he said, adding

that he feels prepared to work in

an office when he finishes school.

The Cooke Center Institute consoli-dates the various consulting, professional development andresearch initiatives that have beenpart of Cooke for many years.Cooke’s literacy, math and specialeducation consultants work inparochial and charter schools andHead Start programs to createinclusive environments that servechildren with and without disabilities. For our corporate partners, theInstitute’s ACCESS project provideslunchtime workshops on currentchild development topics.

We are pleased to report thatCooke has tripled the number ofschools where we consult thisyear. In many of these schools,we are finding quantifiable progressin student test scores. For instance,at one of our partner schools inWashington Heights, readingscores improved at every gradelevel, and fourth- and eighth-gradestudents had an 80 percent overallpass rate on standardized exams.

COOKE CENTER INSTITUTE

Cooke is grateful to theWilliam E. Simon Foundationand HSBC Bank USA, N.A., for their generous supportof the training and consultation services we provide toparents and schools through the Cooke Center Institute.

Through the generous contributions of ourfriends, the Cooke Center’s spring gala raisedmore than $1 million dollars to support ourwork with special needs children. The themeof the May 21 event was Supporting the Fundfor Diversity, one of the three priorities ofCooke’s Road to Independence Campaign.Held at Cipriani 42nd Street, the gala honoredCooke parent and longtime Board memberPhyllis Saxe and media mogul Tom Freston.

In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Saxedescribed searching for a kindergarten forher daughter Elana, now an 18-year-oldCooke Center Academy student who hascerebral palsy. One principal refused to evenlet her in for a tour. Another said Elana mustbe confined to her wheelchair at all times.

“Then I found Cooke,” she said, proudlytelling the crowd of 400 that Elana does yoga, shakes her pom-poms as a cheerleader, andworks with horses at a Brooklyn stable. “Andto this day Elana still walks with canes and doesnot use a wheelchair at school or on the bus.”

FOX 5’s Ernie Anastos and Andrea Dayemceed the event, which included a specialperformance by comedian Lewis Black.

Mr. Freston received Cooke’s Road to Inde-pendence Award for the important, successfullegal battle he waged on behalf of his son, andchildren with special needs everywhere.

“This school provides students with all thehallmarks of a great special education,” hesaid in his acceptance speech, recalling his visitto the Cooke Center Academy in early May.“It was truly inspirational.”

Cooke is grateful to News Corporation forgenerously underwriting the event.

The Kresge ChallengeThe Road to Independence Campaign received a boost this year when theKresge Foundation awarded Cooke a prestigious $750,000 challenge grantto complete the campaign. As of November 2008, Cooke has raised $8 million.Every gift that we receive prior to the challenge deadline of December 2009will bring us that much nearer to receiving Kresge’s award and reaching ourfinal goal of $10 million.

The goals of the Campaign are three-fold:

The Cooke Center Academy – Breaking New GroundSince the Campaign began, we have installed an elevator and improvedhandicapped accessibility at 60 MacDougal Street, home of the CookeCenter Academy. The Academy now boasts a Student Center, DailyLiving Lab, and new therapy spaces. Looking ahead, our goals are tocontinue renovations at the Academy, including an arts studio, sciencelab, and technology lab.

Fund for DiversityCooke remains committed to underserved populations and communities. From the beginning, we have made it a priority to serve any child whocould benefit from our programs, regardless of the family’s financialcircumstances. Cooke established the Fund for Diversity to bridge thetime between the receipt of government tuition reimbursements andCooke’s actual expenses. The Fund also allows us to provide neededservices in schools that could not otherwise afford them.

Fund for the Advancement of Inclusive Education

The objectives of the Fund for the Advancement of Inclusive Educationare to foster best practices for inclusive education. We do this throughproviding professional development and consultation for teachers andparents; demonstrating the effectiveness of our programs throughapplied research; and seeding the funding of new initiatives that havethe potential to generate earned income and become self-sustaining.
