SPACE AND MISSILE DEFENSE COMMAND/ARMY FORCES STRATEGIC COMMAND FORM PARTNERSHIP WITH GALILEO

Brigadier General Kurt Story, Deputy Commander for Operations at the Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command, presented and signed a partnership agreement with Principal Rusty Moomey and D11 Superintendent Dr. Terry Bishop during the March 16th Community Project Night. Through this partnership, the Space and Missile Defense Command will provide volunteers to assist Galileo students with the science curriculum, will arrange for an astronaut from the US Army to address the stu-dent body, and will host Galileo scholars and teachers at the Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base during special field trips.

17th Annual African-American Youth Leadership Conference

Galileo Scholars attended the 17th Annual Afri-can-American Youth Leader-ship Conference (AAYLC) on Sat-urday, March 7th. This year’s theme was Youth Building Respect and Responsibility for Future Rewards. The commitment of the AAYLC is to support, promote, and foster leadership, edu-cation and positive self esteem among youth. Dr. Mary Thurman, D11 Deputy Superintendent for Personnel Support Services, was a presenter at the conference held at Colorado College. Congratulations to Darral Morris who was awarded $75.00 for placing third in the essay contest, for his excellent response to this prompt: “Dr. Martin Luther King believed in a “Dream of Change.” In what way do you think President Obama will carry out that Dream?” You can see a presentation of Darral’s essay on the Galileo website. The following Galileo scholars also attended this conference: Jarrod Hauner, Adam Elms, Colton Schawe, Markesa Hayes, Kaylea Adams, Jeremiah Coleman, Dorray Wimberly-Cheek, Richie Scheuer, Jimena Lopez, and AnaKaren Partida. COLORADO YOUTH CITIZENSHIP AWARDS

School District 11 and Galileo congratulate this year’s Colorado Youth Citizenship Award (CYCA) winners!

CYCA honors outstanding middle school students in the belief that responsible citizenship should be recognized and encouraged early. The middle school winners were selected because of outstanding citizenship, high personal and social standards, reliability, accep-tance of responsibility and community service. The program is sponsored and supported by the North Colorado Springs Rotary Club, all D-11 middle schools, the D-11 GO Club and Walsworth Publishing Company.

Winners from Galileo for the 2008-2009 school year are Jacob Briggs, Nautica Jones and Daniel Webber. Each student re-ceives a savings bond and will be honored in a ceremony held at Mitchell High school on April 13th.

GALILEO SCHOLAR CLUB NEWS

Boys’ Club Golf Team The following scholars have been practicing their golf game, some for the very first time, in order to meet the challenges of the season. First tee time of the season is on April 2. Coach Moomey and Coach Ken Callum are delighted to work with the following scholars partici-pating in the club sport: Fletcher Smith, Andrew Hay-ward, Liam Aubrey, Chandler Scott, Joey DeMarco, Dakota York, Jeremiah Santisteven, Aelias Brown, Sam Celeste, Dustin Conlon, DeAngelo Torrez, Chris Ottesen, Benelito Martinez.

Club Volleyball Team Club Volleyball provides competitive opportunities for all interested girls and boys on separate teams based on interest and ability. Coach Starkey is looking for-ward to working with her girls’ team, who are excited to play and ready to have a good time developing their skills: Kayla Adams, Savanna Cooper, Elanda Decker, Emma Dondi, Angelique Felix, Markesa Hayes, Indi Heiser, Jordyn Levins, Makena Mueller, Miranda Osowicki, Selena Salazar, Analisa Young, Janesha Pollard. There was not sufficient interest in sponsoring a boys’ team this year.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS CLUB Battle of the Books is ready to do Battle. These scholars have been working hard to make sure they know the facts about each of the books they read. We have now been given the final 12 and will focus on these to STOMP the competition in our first Battle of the Books competition on May 15th at Mann Middle School.

Adult volunteers are needed to help on the day of the competition. Please see Jeff Marshall or Melanie Jaramillo for details.

Chess Club We've started with a small group of students this year, but have plans to expand our mem-bership in the coming years. Chaos Geogh-agan, Chris Talty-Earl, Alex Wallace, Dustin Conlon, and Jacob Broughton currently par-ticipate in this club. Right now we're con-

centrating on getting a core group of players knowledgeable about how to play and to learn basic strategy. In the near fu-ture we would like to have a school tournament as well as com-pete in other tournaments around the region. Any scholar is welcome to drop in and play Wednesdays after school.

We would love to have any community members with Chess Experience come in and share their strategies with the scholars!

QUILTING CLUB

Quilting Club meets Tuesday afternoons from 3:45pm-4:45pm in Mrs. Leyba’s room. Bethany Weaver, Emma Dondi, Jordyn McClain and Sydney McClain have been busy “piecing” their projects together. Stop by to check them out!

Mrs. Leyba is looking for volunteers with sewing machines to help the quilt-ing club.

COOL SCIENCE CLUB Cool Science meets on Tuesdays after school. Scholars have the opportunity to participate in a variety of different hands-on activities including: making fruit batteries, soil testing, sound

experiments, brain activities, etc. Club Sponsor Mr. Nigro ex-tends a big thank you to our Cool Science representatives.

Check out the Cool Science website at www.coolscience.org

YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING CLUB Mr. Richie is offering Youth Leadership training to any scholar wishing to become a leader. Scholars will learn may skills from the Colorado Springs Youth Leadership Program. Topics will include Leadership Styles, Situational Knowledge, Speaking, Writing, Multimedia, Interpersonal Skills and much more. See Mr. Richie if you want to join, and let him know which day of the week fits your schedule.

GALILEO SCHOLAR CLUB NEWS

GALILEO SCHOLAR COUNCIL (GSA) Mr. Stephen Swanson reports that so far this year the GSA has been focused on getting organized into a serviceable stu-dent government body. They have run an after school conces-sion stand, helped with the Harvest of Love Food Drive, and their biggest success so far this year has been the well-attended Winter Wonderland Dance in December.

During the week of April 6-10, scholars will participate in the very first GSA elections at Galileo to select five 7th Grade Cabinet Members and five 7th grade Class Representatives. We're looking forward to successful elections. Next year, the GSA will be sponsoring many more events and is looking for-ward to a great second year.

Some of the GSA 6th Grade Representatives this year include Miranda Osowicki, Silas Carter, Darral Morris, Angelique Felix, Andrew Bendorf, Zoe Jones, Andrew Hayward, Hailey Long.

KBDG: The News Everyone is Barking About

Derek and Stephen Swanson co-sponsor the KBDG Announcement Club at Galileo. The

scholars of Galileo work to produce a newscast production where the scholars make a daily televi-

sion show. The scholars come in at 7:45 a.m. Monday through Friday to report events at Galileo and around the world. Most days, the broadcast

consists of five segments which include announce-ments, sports, weather, social, and special seg-

ments. In 45 minutes of extremely hard work, the scholars complete a 4 to 8 minute show.

The scholars have had the opportunity to use high tech production equipment, such as the TRI-

Caster, cameras, and iMacs, for their broadcasts. Our cast is active when gathering the news, creat-

ing scripts, and producing the broadcasts.

MESA CLUB MESA stands for Math, Engineering, Science, Achievement. Club members work on different challenges using MESA skills. MESA teams compete against other teams at the middle school and high school levels; the middle schools have different chal-lenges than the high schools. One of this years contests was building a structure out of Lego’s around a light bulb to see if it would still work after dropping the assembly off the fire tower near TESLA Education Center. Team’s with working bulbs were the winners. Another contest was bridge building. The Team pre-built a balsa wood bridge and tested the bridge’s efficiency against the efficiencies of other middle school bridges. The final contest is a boat regatta. The Team will build a boat out of empty milk cartons, wood, and duct tape. Then the team will put people in the boat, and try to get to the other side of the pool. To win, the team will need to use the least amount of milk cartons to transport the most people across the pool the fastest.

This year’s team includes Sam Askew, Zoe Jones, Khatlyn Manivong, Michael Naillis, Derek Rasmus, Peter Rule, Richie Scheuer, Aimee Schmitt, Mimi Tran, Analisa Young.

YEARBOOK STAFF

Yearbook has been work-ing hard to meet the April

4th deadline and is doing a fantastic job. The yearbook is designed by our Galileo

Scholars and they are proud of the job they have done. The yearbook schol-ars have worked with the

on-line system for the very first time and had to over-

come some obstacles. They took the challenge on like true Bulldogs. They are having a great time taking photos of all the happenings here at Galileo and

can’t wait to see their finished project. This is the first EVER Galileo yearbook, so make sure to order yours now before they are sold out.

The newscast crew consists of Joey Demarco, Khat-lyn Manivong, Silas Carter, Makena Mueller, Cora Lacy, Makaila Carrera, Ciera Gilmore, Daniel Web-ber, Daniel Hopkins, Amanda Stettler, Kylie Haber-

man, Paige Earls, Aelias Brown, Zoe Jones, Mr. Derek Swanson, and Mr. Stephen Swanson.
