It has been a momen-tous year in the life of Holy Blossom Temple.

Our 150th Anni-versary celebrations,

spearheaded by Henrietta Chesnie, were exceptional: the opening event attended by the Governor General of Canada and many other dignitaries; the Sefer Torah project that enabled us all to partici-pate in writing a new Torah, which was welcomed into the congregation on Shavuot; the Confirmation Reunion; the Education Weekend; and so much more — all capped off by a wonderful concert at Roy Thompson Hall.

What an amazing year of celebration honouring our wonderful congregation.

We said farewell to Rabbi Jason Rosenberg and his family, and we welcomed Rabbi Karen Thomashow and her husband, Yonatan Eyal, to our congregational family.

And, of course, we have been en-gaged in a passionate debate about our Renewal Project, which, after the vote on July 16, 2007, is now proceeding to its next phase.

I sincerely hope that, over the com-ing year, the entire congregation will continue to be engaged in this project.

We need everyone to become in-volved and work together as we develop

the religious way:

by rabbi John Moscowitz

thinking about Abraham, the great patriarch of our tradition, biblical commentator Aviva Zornberg suggests

that his was “the first uprooting, not from exile or punishment, but because of an indication of internal movement and change within …”

In other words, Abraham stirred himself to follow God’s command, to make his way toward a new land, to prefigure God’s people because of something from within. Something of his soul (or of his conscience or of his heart) pushed him toward this new life. Abraham established a new people and a new way of thinking about God and God’s relation to humankind.

The deepest kind of uprooting, then, the most fundamental sort of change, is that which, like Abraham’s, wells up from within, born of a dawning alert-ness or curiosity or desire that reflects a need for change. Abraham’s uprooting and movement was not simply physical, but also psychological. His change came

thinking from the inside out | In Perspective

from deep within and extended to far without.

Put differently, Abraham did not respond to the views and values around him, as he did to what welled up from deep within. Avraham Ha Ivri — Abraham The Other — as he is known in Genesis, looks at the world differently, perhaps more clearly, clearly better. That is to say, as our tradition understands, Abraham recognized God and God’s ways better than his peers.

Therefore, Judaism is, from its begin-ning, countercultural, because Abraham was so; what he found about himself was not sufficiently satisfying, not as a way to live a religious and human life, and so he set out on a better course.

Learning from this, let me offer two observations germane to this moment in the late summer of 2007. First, the vote for renewal of Holy Blossom Temple was not so much a vote for physical change, as it was a clear voice — 95 per cent of us — saying we need a better and deeper sense of community that can bring our congregation togeth-er as Jews. At the core of this recogni-

tion was the view that what we have is not sufficiently satisfying — not for this moment and certainly not for the future. That willingness to be self- critical is where real change begins.

The second matter is this: now, as the High Holy Days approach, we move within for reflection and self-criticism, so that as we move outward and for-ward, we do so changed by reflection and renewal — so that we may move closer to one another, to our best selves and to our God.

May we do this together this year as individuals and as a synagogue community.

A final note on another, equally important matter: we are extremely fortunate to have as our new rabbi, a woman of depth, sensitivity and com-mon sense. Rabbi Karen Thomashow will do great things for us at Holy Blossom Temple. Please welcome our new rabbi along with her husband, Professor Yonatan Eyal, at the High Holy Days and then formally on Sat. Oct. 20, 2007. (For more details, please see page 16.)

The God Delusion — Or The God Reality? Is belief in God irrational, a product of childlike fantasies and wishes? Or, might belief in God be based on something real? Some assert religious belief is trumped up — a series of myths that make people feel better, disguising the chaos at the heart of life. For others, religion is a comprehensive world view that brings satisfaction to daily life. Four interesting thinkers, one a devout atheist, and the other three serious believers, share their personal views and experiences about belief, God and their lives.

ShabbatMorningTorahStudy:FromSinaitoSoloveitchik—WhyIdeasMatterRabbi John MoscowitzSaturdays at 9 a.m.From biblical Judaism to rabbinic Ju-daism to contemporary times — ideas have shaped and excited Jews, and have allowed Jewish tradition to develop and endure. Often, these ideas (e.g., the centrality of God and community; Shabbat; mourning in private and in public) are unrecognizable as to their origins and development. In our Shabbat Morning Torah Study, using sources ancient and con-temporary, we will explore the devel-opment of various important ideas to see why they continue to matter so much to so many. educational programs of the highest quality.

These renowned areas of excellence make Holy Blossom Temple a worthy destination for our philanthropic dol-lars. As a pre-eminent force in Jewish continuity, it is the synagogue that will enable us, and the generations to follow, to proceed into the future with a healthy, vibrant and unique, yet inte-grated community.

Holy Blossom Temple embodies our values, making them tangible aspects of our lives and the lives of others, which is why it deserves our support.

I look forward to future celebra-tions of the wide range of achieve-ments yet to come; your generosity will ensure our success.

A worthy philanthropic destination | Foundationby Marvin tile, Chair, Holy Blossom Temple Foundation

the occasion of our 150th Anniversary gave us pause to consider the path our congrega-tion has taken. Our history shows that our

predecessors were willing to change as the world around them did so.

Every year, in moments both solemn and joyous, we are reminded of Holy Blossom’s role and impact on Reform Judaism.

Our lives are enriched as we and our family members observe lifecycle cus-toms. Efforts toward connecting with the broader community, through social action, lead us to greater involvement in our world.

We are privileged to offer access to

Shabbat FusionFridays at 6.30 p.m., oct. 26 and Nov. 30, 2007, and Jan. 25, Feb. 29, Mar. 28, Apr. 25, May 30 and June 20, 2008

Young adults — single and attached, members and non-members — are invited to join us on the last Friday of the month (note exception in June) to experience a Shabbat evening of prayer, song and study like no other. Following the Service, a kiddush of Israeli wine and sushi will encourage participants to linger for hours. For more details, please call Cynthia Silverman (ext. 276), at the Temple.

Foundation Board of Directors nominations

The Holy Blossom Temple Founda-tion raises funds for the Temple and is responsible for soliciting dona-tions to support Temple activities, programs and projects. Any Temple member may put forward his or her name to be considered by the Nominating Committee for a posi-tion on the Foundation Board. For more details, please call Cheryl Zeldin, Director of Development (ext. 260), at the Temple, or e-mail her at [email protected] by Fri. Sept. 28, 2007.

Following the Kabbalat Shabbat Service, join us for our first of three family Shabbat dinners. We would love to see all of our young families at this first experience.

The theme for this dinner is Bereshit — in the beginning. Bring your family, friends and neighbours, and join us as we sing, learn and eat together!

Ma tovu ohalecha yaa-kov — how goodly are your tents. These were the words that Balaam used once he saw the B’nei Yisrael, the

Children of Israel, in action. This past summer, I had many wonderful experi-ences that allowed me to reflect on our past and look to our future.

In June, Stella Loftus and Sheila Freedman and their families gathered in the Religious School foyer, as we re-dedicated the Heinz Warshauer Reli-gious School Wing, adding a plaque to honour the vision that these two wom-en had 50 years ago. Stella and Sheila wanted to create a program where our children could learn about Reform Judaism in a caring environment. Because of their foresight, the Holy Blossom Temple Pre-School was created and continues to stand strong today. We pride ourselves on our present, but we

Our future in action | Supplementary Schoolsby Deborah K. Spiegel, Director of Education

are forever thankful to our past. And our future brings us much hope.

I recently spent a week at Camp George, our Reform Movement camp in Parry Sound. Camp George joins the best of two worlds: the joy of a great camp environment and the beauty of living Jewishly. I watched our Holy Blossom young people play ball, daven Ma’ariv, go waterskiing and welcome in Shabbat together. It was an honour to be there as a member of the faculty. The campers had a wonderful time exploring, learn-ing new skills in camping and improving their Jewish living skills. These children are our future.

September brings us to another fabulous school year. I am saddened to announce that Marley Greenglass, our School Programs Co-ordinator, has chosen to take early retirement. We thank her for her hard work over the past two years, bringing her great energy to our students, the staff and our

many programs. We thank her for her dedication and wish her well. We are extremely fortunate to welcome Lisa Isen Baumal, who has worked for many years as a teacher and administrator in the Jewish community, as our new Pro-grams Co-ordinator. We are excited to have Lisa on our team, as she will bring many new ideas and creative plans to our program.

If your children are in Grades 3 to 6 and love to sing, we encourage

them to join the Junior Choir. They will: help lead a Shabbat Morning

Family Service; participate in Hallel at Festival Services; be a part of

perform at celebrations such as Chanukah and Yom Ha’Atzma’ut;

have an opportunity to participate in a concert at Temple Sinai;

What we can create | The Last Wordby rabbi Karen thomashow

two early rabbis, Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Joshua, engaged in a discussion as to when the world was created.

According to Rabbi Eliezer, the world was created in the month of Tishrei, the month during which the start of our year, Rosh Hashanah, is observed.

According to Rabbi Joshua, however, the world was created in the month of Nisan, the month in which the ancient Israelites were led out of Egypt.

While we follow the opinion of Rabbi Eliezer on this matter, this discussion is of great interest.

Our tradition is not want for point-ing out that our liberation from slavery was a rebirth, a creation of a new world

of sorts — perhaps a spiritual creation. It has also been suggested that the Messiah, or messianic period, will be ushered in during the season that our People saw redemption in the past.

This, too, speaks of a kind of creation. However, it is the first and physical creation of the world that guides our calendar’s celebration of the New Year.

Perhaps, then, there is another reason why we celebrate the New Year during the month of Tishrei. Each Jewish holi-day corresponds to a specific event(s) in our history: e.g., Shavuot — receiving the Torah; Tisha B’Av — the destruction of the First and Second Temple.

For these commemorations and others,

our behaviour responds to the event. If then, it was in Tishrei that the

world was created — an event that ushered in new hopes, new possibilities and new life — may we respond with creation of our own.

This is our time to introduce some-thing new into our lives, to re-work rela-tionships, to adopt a virtuous task. This is an essential element of Rosh Hashanah.

As this is my first Rosh Hashanah and year with this congregation, I especially look forward to what we can create together.

May we usher in our New Year with great hope and anticipation. L’Shanah tovah.
