Without a right to counsel in many civil matters, Met Council clients face the courts and opposing attorneys without representation and often without any guidance. The severity and complexity of these cases require skilled legal representation. Socio-economic status limits access to representation, and fairness and justice become commodities in a system designed to preserve them. What legal matters do our clients face? Our clients face an array of legal challenges, including housing-related litigation, immigration, family law matters, public benefits, debt collection and harassment issues. Who represents our clients? The Legal Services Program has two components: 1) A contractual relationship with New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) and Legal Services of New York; and 2) The growing Met Council network of private attorneys committed to pro bono representation on behalf of NYC’s poor. What geographical areas do we serve? We serve all five boroughs of New York. How does the program work? Case workers identify clients in need of legal assistance and conduct an initial intake and interview. Pro bono lawyers work with the Legal Services Program Coordinator to ensure effective, efficient use of the lawyer’s time and ease of communication with the client and caseworker.
