New approach for 2010-2013

New approach:• Identifies important Societal Challenges for the EU

to be addressed by specific set of research actions• Work Programmes will still include some topics to be

addressed by smaller collaborative projects and CSA

But:

Main funding scheme to be used = Collaborative Projects (Large Scale Integrating Research Projects)

• Four to five years in duration• Minimum EC contribution = EUR 6,500,000• At least 7 partners from 7 MS/ACs

• Consolidates the new approach adopted in 2010• Societal Challenges accompanied by topics which focus

on more short term needs or complement challenges• Overall budget €84 million• Ratio of budget allocation between Challenges to Topics

of approximately 50:50• Budget allows for one project per challenge, one-two per

topic• Based on Indicative Strategic Research Roadmap but

budget constraints mean reduction of Societal Challenges from 10 to 5.

Objective ICT-2011.1.4 Trustworthy ICT

The objective is a trustworthy Information Society based on an ecosystem of digital communication, data processing and service provisioning infrastructures, with trustworthiness in its design, as well as respect for human and societal values and cultures. Projects must ensure strong interplay with legal, social and economic research in view of development of a techno-legal system that is usable, socially accepted and economically viable.

Objective ICT-2011.4.2 – Language Technologies

There is a growing need for effective multilingual solutions that support business and interpersonal communication and enable people to make sense of online content and services in Europe's many languages. What is the ERC?

What is the European Research Council (ERC)? • New pan-European funding organisation• Supports the best in Europe - scientists, engineers and scholars• Funding of €7.51 billion (2007-13)

What are the aims of the ERC?• Encourage highest quality research in Europe

• Excellence is the sole criterion

• Competitive, flexible funding• Retain, repatriate and recruit (career support)

What are the ERC Grant Schemes?• Currently - Starting Grants and Advanced Grants

• Support for a PI and (if necessary) team members• Investigator-initiated frontier research across all fields of

research, on the basis of scientific excellence• New proof of Concept Scheme (early 2011)

& possible new scheme (2012 Work Programme in Spring 2011?)

Key Points for ERC Grants

• Support for a PI and (if necessary) team-members• No need for collaboration with other countries• Team all usually based at the same institution (in EU/AC), but

possible to have team members in other organisations if strongly justified (anywhere in World - not just EU, AC and ICPC)

• Also for Advanced Grants can have a Co-I (must be from a different discipline to the PI)

• No nationality or mobility requirements• Investigator driven (bottom-up) substantial advances

“Frontier Research”• Excellence is only peer review criterion

• 50% for the PI (must have an outstanding CV, (potential) leadership profile & track record

• 50% for the Research Project

ERC Grant Schemes

Starting Independent Researcher Grants (Starting Grants)

• boost the independent careers of excellent researchers

• by providing adequate support

• at the critical stage where they are starting or consolidating

• their own independent research team or programme.

• Now 50% of Annual ERC Call Budget• Annual calls: open late spring and close in autumn• Grants of up to €1.5 million over 5 yrs (€2 million in certain

cases)• For latest call, the PI has to be 2-12 years from PhD
