THE UPDATE

Despite all the snow falling out of the sky, the 9th annual Teva Mountain Games is a little more than a month away, June 3 – 6.

The Vail Valley Foundation, the event’s organizer, has announced schedules for the climbing, cycling and, the newest event, stand up paddling. Registration is now open for 24 mountain-sport compe-titions.

ClimbingIn addition to the amateur climbing

competitions, Teva Mountain Games will host the IFSC Bouldering World Cup. Featuring some of the world’s best internationally-ranked climbers, the IFSC Bouldering World Cup is the only World Cup bouldering event on U.S. soil.

Bouldering is the simplest style of climbing. Without the encumbrance of a rope, the climber is free to practice the sport at its highest level. The object is to complete boulder problems, which re-quire a serious blend of gymnastic abil-ity and grip strength.

For climbers, most of whom are used to practicing their sport in remote loca-tions or competing in small-scale events, the Teva Mountain Games is almost a shock to the system with its massive wall, national television exposure, thou-sands of cheering fans, a big cash prize and the world’s most elite climbers all on one roster.

The citizen bouldering competition, scheduled for Sunday, June 6, pits ama-teurs against each other in a fun format, where the object is to complete climbing problems which require a serious blend of gymnastic ability, superb concentra-tion and grip strength. With 32 graded problems to choose from, competitors are scored by their best 4 ascents.

The IFSC Bouldering World Cup be-gins Friday, June 4 with qualifiers; semi-finals and finals will be Saturday. All climbing events will be held at the base of Vail mountain.

Sweet Basil begins their annual “Spring for your School” fundraiser tonight.

The six-day event benefits six schools in the Vail Val-ley.

“It’s all part of a week long effort by Sweet Basil to support our local schools” says Matt Morgan, manag-ing partner. “After all, those kids are our future!”

The fundraiser runs from through Friday, benefiting a new school each day. Customers who come in for lunch or dinner and mention the school of the day will have 35 percent of their food and beverage total donated back to that school.

“Last year we gave out over $2,000 to four selected schools,” says Morgan. “This year we have added 2 more schools and upped the donated percentage to 35 percent.”

This year Battle Mountain High School will be us-ing the money toward Project Graduation which is an evening of fun to keep seniors safe on the night of their May graduation.

“It always warms my heart when community mem-bers and businesses support our cause without being solicited,” says Ellen Eaton, chairwoman of Project Graduation.

All this on top of Sweet Basil’s regular Spring offer-ings of $11.95 lunches and a three course dinner for $42. The schedule of schools is as follows:

Sunday, April 25 - Eagle County Charter AcademyMonday, April 26 - St Clare of Assisi Catholic

SchoolTuesday, April 27 - Edwards Elementary SchoolWednesday, April 28 - Vail Mountain School

Thursday, April 29 - Red Sandstone Elementary School

Friday, April 30 - Battle Mountain High SchoolFor more information about Sweet Basil, or to make

reservations for lunch or dinner visit www.sweetbasil-vail.com or call 970-476-0125.

Sweet Basil managing partner Matt Morgan says they have upped the percentage on the restau-rant’s annual “Spring for your School” fundraiser. This year, 35 percent of your bill will benefit a fea-tured local school. The fundraiser runs from tonight to Friday.

New Life Assembly of God is teaming up with Nation to Nation Ministries and Vida Nueva church for a second time in two months to help feed, clothe, and reach those in need at the Pine Ridge Lakota In-dian Reservation in South Dakota.

Circumstances on the reservation are dire, health care, building ma-terials, and items as basic as shoes are at a premium, but the combined ministries hope to bring much need-ed relief.

The plans for an upcoming trip in June include: building a deck for a Vietnam vet effected by agent or-ange, who has kidney failure, build

an outhouse for a man with ampu-tated limbs from diabetes, build an 8 by 10 building to store food until it can be distributed, and dig and pour footing for a 24 by 36 food distribution center.

Semi-trucks full of food have been donated for the Pine Ridge Reserva-tion, and the ministries need some-where to store these items until they can distribute them to the needy.

Two weeks ago they received and distributed 5,700 pounds of donated canned goods, and in March, New Life handed out clothing, furniture, household goods, food, firewood and prepared meals through the veteran’s

radio show on the Native American radio KILI FM 88.7. They are also taking bread to the Pine Ridge Res-ervation every two weeks.

But the ministries hope to do much more. New Life is asking the com-munity to donate. They are starting to gather baby clothes, children’s clothes, household goods, furniture, funds for building projects, and money to support the June youth mission trip to the reservation.

Donations can be dropped off at 480 Nottingham Road Avon, CO 81620 for more information or to learn how you can help call 827-4102.

place,” she said yesterday when she received her liquor license for this summer.

People were genuinely upset with the prospect that the Wolcott Yacht Club might run aground, she said.

“I cannot tell you how many phone calls I’ve gotten,” Jan said.

The restaurant/bar business is real work, and she said she wasn’t sure she’d do it until the last couple weeks. It may or may not be true

that locals slowly creeped past the Wolcott Yacht Club in their auto-mobiles, their forlorn faces pressed against their windows as they con-templated the unthinkable – that the Wolcott Yacht Club might not open.

But, like the Greek goddess of spring that she is, Jan strolled into the county building yesterday for her liquor license to open, as the clouds rolled back and the sun shone

through – or something like that. They’ll be open for an event on

They’ll be open for the rest of us around Memorial Day. The liquor license runs for 120 days. They’ll be open for the summer.

you’re a pro or new to the sport, the Teva Games invite you to test your SUP skills in the class II-III waters of Gore Creek in Vail Village.

The discipline of stand up paddling has grown in strokes and strides in the last four years. Known for its unique perspective, fitness, core strength and endur-ance qualities, SUP brings the waterman lifestyle in-land for the whole family. According to the folks at the Teva Mountain Games, when you try this sport, one thing is for sure: no matter what your ability, you are guaranteed to fall and guaranteed to have a whole lot of fun.

For the first time at the Games, First Ascent and Ha-waii’s C4 Waterman are offering two unique events designed to help guide a mountain version of the SUP experience, which was originally an ocean sport.

Stand up paddling, or in the Hawaiian language “Hoe he’e nalu,” is an emerging global sport, which began as a way for surfing instructors to manage their large groups of learner surfers, as standing on the board gave them a higher viewpoint that increased visibility of what was going on around them.

“As a leader and pioneer in the industry, we saw the potential of Teva Mountain Games to take stand up pad-dling to a higher level, and that’s why we decided to go all in,” says C4 Waterman co-founder Todd Bradley.

CyclingVail has a long legacy of hosting world-class cy-

cling competitions dating back to the Coors Classic/Red Zinger races of the early eighties, then as the host site for World Cup Mountain Biking competitions in-

cluding five years of World Cup racing and the World Championships in 1994 and 2001.

The Teva Mountain Games brings roadies, cross-country riders and the new generation of freeriders to-gether for a weekend of great competition.

The innovative freeride competitions and slopestyle courses provide an exciting ride for two-wheelers and an amazing site for spectators. Competing at the Teva Mountain Games also has its advantages like national TV exposure, thousands of fans to cheer you on and huge cash prizes.

Celebration of mountain sportsA project of the Vail Valley Foundation, The Teva

Mountain Games is the country’s largest celebration of mountain sport, soul and culture.

Professional and amateur outdoor adventure athletes from the Valley and around the world congregate on the mountains and rivers of Vail to compete in eight sports and 24 disciplines, including x-country, freeride, slope-style and road cycling; freestyle, 8-Ball, sprint and ex-treme kayaking; raft paddlecross; fly-fishing and World Cup bouldering, among others.

The Teva Mountain Games also will include a moun-tain photography competition, adventure film school, film festival, an interactive exhibition and demo area, live music and “mountain lifestyle parties.”

As if you needed any additional motivation to get in-volved, there is over $100,000 in prize money on the line. Registration is open to everyone and events have been capping out earlier and earlier each year, so get on it soon by going to www.TevaMountainGames.com.

Director Sylvain White adapts the Vertigo comic in “The Losers,” which tells the story of a team of mercenaries who wage war on the CIA after they’re double-crossed in the field and left to die. Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Jensen (Chris Evans), Roque (Idris Elba), Pooch (Columbus Short), and Cougar (Óscar Jaenada) were on a blacks-ops mission in the Bolivian jungle when rogue CIA agent Max (Jason Patric) hung them out to dry. After beating the odds and surviving their ordeal, the team decides to strike back against Max even if it means sacrificing their own lives to do so. Aiding them on their treacherous suicide mission is sexy operative Aisha} (Zoe Saldana), who has her own reasons for wanting to see Max get his just deserts. But getting to Max won’t be easy, because in addition to having the CIA on his side, he’s about to spark a war that could plunge the entire globe into chaos. Their time quickly running out as Max’s plan kicks into overdrive, the Special Forces unit that everyone assumed dead arms themselves to the teeth and prepares to strike back with a vengeance.

Tragedy stricken Ken Green considers playing again soon

Ken Green feels so good about his return to golf af-ter a year of tragedy that he might play in next week’s Champions Tour event.

Green is playing in the Legends of Golf this week-end, a two-man competition where he was partnered with Mike Reid at Savannah Harbor Golf Resort.

After two birdies Friday, Green is thinking about next week’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic.

He also wants to play an upcoming individual 54-hole event, the Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic in Endicott, N.Y.

Since last June, Green suffered through the car crash deaths of his brother and longtime girlfriend. Green’s injuries were so severe in the accident that he chose to have the lower part of his leg amputated so he’d could play on tour again.

In January, his son was found dead in his Southern Methodist University dorm room.

RIGHT: Sitting at his agent’s pool in West Palm Beach, Fla., Ken Green had to deal with the loss of friends and the loss of his lower right leg. Not long after, Green’s son was found dead in his dorm room.

2011 Tour de France to change up start

The 2011 Tour de France will start with a flat stage in the Vendee region on the western coast.

The race will start on July 2, 2011, in the windy Vendee region—also famed for the Vendee Globe sail-ing race—for the fourth time in the race’s 107-year his-tory. The previous races that started there were in 1993, ’99 and 2005.

The 180-kilometer (111.6-mile) first stage from Pas-sage du Gois to Mont Des Alouettes will be followed by a 23-kilometer (14.3-mile) team time trial around Les Essarts on July 3.

The following day will be a flat stage as the race leaves the Vendee region, departing from Olonne-Sur-Mer toward a destination not to be revealed until the full unveiling of the 2011 route in October.

The Vendee region holds special memories for seven-time Tour champion Lance Armstrong, who first wore the yellow jersey after winning the prologue at Le Puy du Fou in 1999 as he returned to racing following can-cer treatment.

In 2005, Armstrong also beat rival Jan Ullrich in the prologue from Fromentine to Noirmoutier, overtaking the German in a display of dominance that paved the way for his seventh straight Tour win.

This year’s Tour, which is again set to feature Arm-strong following his comeback ride last year, will start in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on July 3.

Alberto Contador of Spain won the 2009 Tour, with Armstrong third behind Andy Schleck of Luxem-bourg.

Bohn crushing at rain soaked Zurich Classic

In 1992, while a sophomore at Alabama, Jason Bohn was playing in a charity fund-raiser in Tuscaloosa when he made a hole-in-one worth $1 million. Bohn dropped his amateur status and golf scholarship on the spot, turned professional, and shot 5-under 67 Saturday to take a four-stroke lead at the weather-plagued Zurich Classic.

Bohn, the first-round leader, got off to a late start and had to wait out a 90-minute delay, but offset a bogey with six birdies for a 132 total. John Senden and Jeff Overton were tied for second after both shot 69s.

Lee Janzen, Alex Cejka, Brian Davis, Greg Owen, and Shaun Micheel were tied fourth another shot back.

The rain and lightning that stopped play on Friday and de-layed it Saturday morning gave way to strong winds gusting to more than 40 mph.

Tournament officials planned to make the cut after the sec-ond round ended and immediately begin the third round, with trios of players teeing off on the first and 10th holes.

Bohn played on the Canadian Tour and the Nationwide Tour before earning promotion to the PGA Tour, where he has played since 2004. In 2005 he won the PGA Tour’s B.C. Open. He won $866,786 on tour in 2008, good enough for 123rd on the money list and a full tour card for 2009.

During the 2009 season Bohn lost in a playoff at the Wynd-ham Championship along with Kevin Stadler to Ryan Moore.

participate in negotiations on the energy bill, throwing its already cloudy prospects deeper into doubt. He had been working for months with Senators John Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts, and Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut, on the a legislation, which they were scheduled to announce with considerable fanfare on Monday morning, reports Broder. That an-nouncement has been indefinitely postponed.

In his letter to his two colleagues, Mr. Graham re-portedly said that he was troubled by reports that the Senate Democratic leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, and the White House were planning to take up an immigra-tion measure before the energy bill. According to the report, Mr. Graham has worked with Democrats in the past on immigration matters and was expected to be an important bridge to Republicans on that issue, as well as on energy.

May 20 is ‘Everybody Draw Mohammed Day’

The following is from Michael C. Moynihan of rea-son.com:

“Via Dan Savage’s blog at The Stranger, some clever chappie (I don’t know who) has declared May 20, 2010 ‘Everybody Draw Mohammad Day,’ in support of Matt Stone and Trey Parker and in opposition to religious thuggery. Why May 20? I haven’t a clue, though it could have something to do with Otto ascending the

throne of Greece. Or, more likely, King Sancho IV of Castile’s founding of the Study of General Schools of Alcalá.

“I will be employing my tremendous skill as an il-lustrator, of course, and expect that my colleagues

will do the same. If they refuse, they will be declared weak-kneed, namby-pamby, quisling infidels and will be shamed on this blog (Though such idle threats rarely work these days; perhaps I could threaten them with a painful death, which seems to do the trick). If readers would like to show their solidarity, please email your Mohammad masterpieces to me here: mmoynihan at reason.com. The best ones will be published on Hit & Run, which, along with the concomitant death threat, is reward enough.”

Boobquake to rock the world Monday

It’s rare to have advance warning of a natural disas-ter, but that’s the situation we find ourselves in regard-ing the impending Boobquake that’s set to hit the world on tomorrow, writes New York Magazine. In response to a Muslim imam who claims that cleavage-bearing women cause earthquakes, the blog Blag Hag has pro-posed a Boobquake on Monday to test his theory, ac-cording to the report.

More than 132,000 people have RSVPed to Monday’s Facebook event and the Post easily found a half-dozen women who are psyched to participate by showing off their goods writes NY Magazine. In an unrelated note, Monday is also “Take Pictures of Random Women on Your Cell Phone” day.

Fabrice Tourre will not be popular at the office

tomorrowAs the U.S. housing turned downward in January

2007, a Goldman Sachs trader wrote in e-mails to a woman he apparently was courting that investments he had sold were “like Frankenstein turning against his own inventor.”

“I’m trading a product which a month ago was worth $100 and today is only worth $93,” wrote Fab-rice Tourre, who was charged along with the bank in a civil complaint filed this month by the Securities and Exchange Commission. “That doesn’t seem like a lot but when you take into account ... (the investments) are worth billions, well it adds up to a lot of money.”

Tourre was talking about investment products like the one at the heart of a federal complaint against his firm. For Tourre, the investments were like an inven-tion gone awry: He had started arranging them when the market was on the upswing. But he continued sell-ing them after the market turned.

Birth control in China is different

Health authorities are planning to sterilize nearly

10,000 people in southern China over the next four days as part of a population control program, reports Sky News. Some of the people in Puning City will be forced to have the procedure carried out against their will, according to the report Amnesty International re-portedly says forced sterilization “amounts to torture.”

Reports in the Chinese media say that Puning Health authorities in Guangdong Province have launched a special campaign to sterilize people who already have at least one child in order to ensure local birth control quotas are met, writes Sky News.

Chinese newspaper reports say that those who refuse to be sterilized have seen their elderly mothers or fa-thers taken away and detained.

Strict abortion bills vetoed

Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry vetoed two abortion bills that he said are an unconstitutional attempt to in-sert government into the private lives and decisions of citizens. One measure would have required women to undergo an intrusive ultrasound and listen to a detailed description of the fetus before getting an abortion. Hen-ry said yesterday that legislation is flawed because it does not allow rape and incest victims to be exempted.

“It would be unconscionable to subject rape and in-cest victims to such treatment,” the governor said, be-

cause it would victimize a victim a second time. “State policymakers should never mandate that a citizen be forced to undergo any medical procedure against his or her will, especially when such a procedure could cause physical or mental trauma. To do so amounts to an un-constitutional invasion of privacy.”

The second abortion bill the governor vetoed would have prohibited pregnant women from seeking dam-ages if physicians withhold important information or provide inaccurate information about their pregnancy.

23 percent oppose Ariz. immigration bill

The Arizona legislature has now passed the toughest measure against illegal immigration in the country, au-thorizing local police to stop and check the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being in the country il-legally, writes Rasmussen Reports. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 70 percent of likely voters in Arizona approve of the legislation, while just 23 percent oppose it.

The survey also indicates that the opponents of the measure, including major national Hispanic groups, say it will lead to racial profiling, and 53 percent of vot-ers in the state are concerned that efforts to identify and deport illegal immigrants also will end up violating the

civil rights of some U.S. citizens. According to the re-port, forty-six percent don’t share that concern. Those figures include 23 percent who are very concerned and 18 percent who are not at all concerned.

Li-Lo no-go for new showLindsay Lohan was axed from a movie because she’s

not “bankable” -- this according a TMZ source con-nected with the production of the flick. Lindsay was slated to star in “The Other Side,” a movie about a grad student working on a deserted island, reports TMZ. Da-vid Michaels, the writer/director, told TMZ, “Our team simply chose to move on from Lindsay and we’ll soon be announcing a replacement.”

But TMZ sources connected with the film reportedly say the people financing the film were skittish about relying on Lindsay. The movie also stars Woody Har-relson, Giovanni Ribisi, Dave Matthews and Alanis Morissette.

China extends “Far Sea Defense”

The Chinese military is seeking to project naval pow-er well beyond the Chinese coast, from the oil ports of the Middle East to the shipping lanes of the Pacific,

where the United States Navy has long reigned as the dominant force, military officials and analysts reported-ly say in a New York Times report. China calls the new strategy “far sea defense,” and the speed with which it is building long-range capabilities has surprised for-eign military officials, reports the Times.

The strategy is a sharp break from the traditional, nar-rower doctrine of preparing for war over the self-gov-erning island of Taiwan or defending the Chinese coast, writes the Times. Now, Chinese admirals say they want warships to escort commercial vessels that are crucial to the country’s economy, according to the report, from as far as the Persian Gulf to the Strait of Malacca, in Southeast Asia, and to help secure Chinese interests in the resource-rich South and East China Seas.

Many non-profits to lose tax status

As many as 400,000 nonprofit organizations are weeks away from a doomsday, reports the New York Times. At midnight on May 15, an estimated one-fifth to one-quarter of some 1.6 million charities, trade asso-ciations and membership groups will lose their tax ex-emptions, thanks to a provision buried in a 2006 federal bill aimed at pension reform, notes the report.

“It’s going to be an unholy mess once these organi-zations realize what’s happened to them,” reportedly said. Diana Aviv, president of the Independent Sector, a nonprofit trade group.

According to the Times, the federal legislation passed in 2006 required all nonprofits to file tax forms the fol-lowing year. Previously, only organizations with rev-enues of $25,000 or more — or the vast majority of nonprofit groups — had to file.

Giannoulias bank closes; campaign goes on for

Obama’s former Senate seat

Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias appeared un-daunted by the shuttering of his family’s bank, saying he would continue his bid to keep President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat in Democratic hands with re-newed purpose.

“My campaign for the United States Senate goes forward with a renewed determination to turn Illinois’ economy around and to fix what’s broken in Washing-ton, D.C.,” he told reporters late Friday, just hours after regulators shut down Broadway Bank. The closure was expected but still presents an election challenge for Gi-

Palestinians challenge Obama

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas called on Presi-dent Barack Obama yesterday to impose a Mideast peace deal, reflecting growing frustration with what Palestinians see as Washington’s failure to wrangle concessions out of Israel’s hardline government. In an unusually blunt appeal, Abbas said that if Obama be-lieves Palestinian statehood is a vital U.S. interest, then the American leader must take forceful steps to bring it about.

“Since you, Mr. President and you, the members of the American administration, believe in this, it is your duty to call for the steps in order to reach the solution and impose the solution — impose it,” Abbas said in a speech to leaders of his Fatah movement. “But don’t tell me it’s a vital national strategic American interest ... and then not do anything,” he added.

Abbas spoke a day after meeting with Obama’s spe-cial Mideast envoy, George Mitchell, who has tried in vain for more than a year to bring Israelis and Palestin-ians back to the negotiating table. Abbas says there’s no point in holding talks as long as Israel keeps building settlements on Palestinian-claimed land and refuses to discuss the fate of east Jerusalem, the sector of the city Palestinians claim as a future capital.

Candidates define genocide differently

after electionsPresident Obama, who as a candidate vowed to use the

term genocide to describe the Ottoman mass slaughter of Armenians nearly a century ago, once again declined to do so yesterday as he marked the anniversary of the start of the killings, reports the New York Times.

Trying to navigate one of the more emotionally fraught foreign policy challenges, Mr. Obama issued a statement from his weekend getaway here commemo-rating the victims of the killings but tried to avoid alien-ating Turkey, a NATO ally, which adamantly rejects the genocide label, writes the Times. “On this solemn day of remembrance, we pause to recall that 95 years ago one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century began,” Mr. Obama reportedly said in the statement, which largely echoed the same language he used on this date a year ago. “In that dark moment of history, 1.5 million Armenians were massacred or marched to their death in the final days of the Ottoman Empire.”

Naomi strikes againBritish supermodel Naomi Campbell is in the news

again for her temper after a series of questions during an interview with an ABC News reporter prompted Campbell to punch the camera filming her, reports the

San Francisco Chronicle. After being questioned about whether or not she re-

ceived a “blood diamond” from former Liberian presi-dent Charles Taylor, Campbell stormed out of the ABC News interview, but not before walloping the camera with a smack, writes the Chronicle.

Bret is not yet feeling better

No news is good news, right? Sadly when it comes to updates on Bret Michaels’ life-threatening health woes, we wish that were the case, writes E! Online.

Responding to numerous conflicting reports that have popped up in less than 24-hours since news of the rocker’s brain hemorrhage broke, a rep for Michaels reportedly thanked fans for their “support, thoughts & concern” yesterday morning, commenting in the E! Online report:

“There are several incorrect reports on Bret’s con-dition. Bret remains in critical condition at an undis-closed location. Further tests are being ran and infor-mation will be updated in the coming days.”
