Each section is colour-coded to make it easier to find what you’re looking for in a jiffy. We’ve also included a section about all those lights on your router, so you’ll know what they all mean. And if you do have any little hiccups, there’s no need to stress. There are simple step-by-step instructions at the end of the guide to help you on your way. So, just follow this guide and you’ll be up and running in no time.

First… just check your PC is ready for wireless.

Most laptops under 3 years old are ‘wireless enabled’. Just look for this ‘Intel® Centrino™’ logo – it’ll be near the keyboard.

This usually means you’ve got the thumbs up to go wireless. If you’ve got a desktop PC take a peek at your manufacturer documents to see if you’re ready to go. If your PC’s not yet ready, we can help… you just need an extra little gadgetas follows:

Desktop: A wireless USB adaptor or a wireless network card

Laptop: A wireless USB adaptor or built-in wireless network adaptor

Just get yours at www.talktalk.co.uk/shop or any of The Carphone Warehouse stores.

Please note: When setting up, make sure you use the power adaptor supplied in your new pack. Other power adaptors may cause damage.

PCGetting going is easy. Just pop the TalkTalk Connect & Go CD we’ve given you into your PC and then do what it says on-screen. Just in case you like to see things on paper, the on-screen steps are also shown on page 9 and 10.

Okay, so let’s get going!

Keep your CD safe “just in case”You may need to use it again to add other computers to your wireless network. So write your details down here, then keep this booklet in a safe place with your CD.

Wireless network name (SSID) This will be displayed on-screen during installation with your Connect & Go CD

WPA-PSK Key This will be displayed on-screen during installation with your Connect & Go CD

Nice and safeYour TalkTalk Connect & Go CD will automatically secure your wireless connection if your PC has built-in wireless, or you use a TalkTalk wireless adaptor. So other people can’t nose around your personal information.

Top tip! Using your own wireless USB adaptor? You’ll need the wireless settings given on your TalkTalk Connect & Go CD to set up your wireless connection. Then you’ll need to install the adaptor on your computer using the manufacturer’s instructions.

Top tip! The TalkTalk Connect & Go CD will help you save your wireless settings straight onto your desktop as a text file named ‘TalkTalk Settings’. Clever, eh!

It’s easy to add extra PCs Just check they’re ready to go wireless, then do this:

• PutyourTalkTalkConnect&GoCDintoyournewPC

• Followthe‘Whatdoyouwanttodo?’page

• Followthe‘I’malreadyaTalkTalkbroadbandcustomer’section

• Choosetheoption‘Iwanttoaddanothercomputerforwirelessconnectivity’

• Followtheon-screeninstructions

If you want to add a Mac, go to page 14.

• Set up your broadband connection and wireless router

• Get your hands on a free tool called Assist & Go, which helps solve broadband niggles

Top tip! When you set up your broadband connection, Assist & Go will install and run automatically. You can run it any time by clicking the icon on your desktop after it has been installed. You can use Assist & Go once you are set up for support if you have any problems with your broadband connection.

• Set up your free TalkTalk email address

• Protect your PC against viruses and online nasties, with TalkTalk Online Security

Top tip! Remove any anti-virus or any other software you might have installed with a previous Internet Service Provider – you may find they are not compatible with TalkTalk.

Pop this clever little CD into your PC and it’ll help you do all this:

Check your home phone for a dial tone. If you can’t hear one, call our landline faults team on 0870 087 8777.

Here’s the technical bit (sort of). But don’t panic, it’ll be easy if you follow these steps.

Okay, so let’s get going!

Getting going is easy. We’ll take you through it bit by bit over the next few pages. First… just check your Mac is ready for wireless. Most Apple iMacs and iBooks have an ‘Airport’ card – which works with your TalkTalk wireless router. Don’t worry if you don’t have an Airport card, you can buy one now at www.apple.com/ukstore.

Top tip! Make sure any broadband software from other providers has been removed before you start.

Plug a microfilter into each phone socket you use (don’t forget you will temporarily have to unplug your Sky TV box) so they don’t mess up the signal. We’ve given you 2 microfilters, but if you need more give us a call on 0870 444 1820.

Now connect one end of the grey ADSL cable into a microfilter, and the other end into your router. It’s best if this microfilter is plugged into your home ‘master telephone socket’ – which is usually by the front door. But if you can’t get to it, just use the nearest one.

Plug one end of the yellow Ethernet cable into your computer’s Ethernet port and the other end into the back of your router. You need to do this first of all for the ‘wired’ set-up – but you can take out the Ethernet cable once your wireless connection is made.

Pop your power adaptor into the back of your router. Plug the adaptor in, switch it on at the wall and push the power button on the side of your router. Make sure you use the power adaptor supplied with your pack. Using other power adaptors may cause damage.

The ADSL light should be solid green like this usually after 30 seconds of being switched on.

Setting up your network

If the light is off or flashing green check:

• The microfilter connected to your router is plugged into the master telephone socket (refer back to step 2)

• All your extension cables. It’s a good idea to use the grey ADSL cable to connect your router and microfilter… as cables longer than 10 metres (that’s 32 feet) can weaken your broadband signal

• Devices such as Sky, cordless phones and baby monitors are switched off or moved away from the router during set-up

Okay, so you’ve done half of the technical bit. Now you’ve just got to do the other half and you’ll have your Mac up and running with wireless.

So, you’ve connected your router to your Mac with the yellow Ethernet cable.

Now click on the Apple icon at the top left of screen.

Select ‘System preferences’ and then select ‘Network’ from the internet and network section.

In the ‘Location’ box select ‘Automatic’.

If you use Mac 10.4: In the ‘Show’ box select ‘Built-in Ethernet’. If you use Mac 10.5: In the menu on the left choose ‘Built-in Ethernet’ and click the ‘advanced’ button on the bottom right.

Under the first tab, ‘TCP/ IP’, the ‘Configure IPv4’ section should state ‘Using DHCP’.ForMac10.4usersonly:Ifthisoptionisnotavailablethenclickonthe next tab – ‘PPPoE’ and remove the tick in the top box that states ‘Connect using PPPoE’. Now go back to the first tab and ‘Using DHCP’ should be available in the drop down list.

Click ‘Apply Now’ and close the window (if you don’t want to use a wireless connection you can browse the web now).

Open your internet browser (e.g. Safari) and type this URL in the top bar (where you’d normally type a web address): 192.168.1.1 (don’t type ‘www’). Use the word ‘admin’ when you’re asked for both username and password, click ‘OK’.

Your Ethernet port will look like this.

And now secure your connection.

• Firstofallclickon‘WirelessLAN’ontheleftmenu.Makesureyour ‘Access Point’ is set to ‘Enable’. In ‘Channel ID’ replace ‘Auto Channel Select’ with ‘Channel 01’

• Next to ‘SSID’ delete ‘HG520b’ and enter a name for your network (make it something easy to remember but don’t include any personal details)

• Next to ‘Authentication Type’ choose ‘WPA-PSK’

• In the WPA-PSK section, ‘Pre-shared key’ will be selected. In the box to the right put in a password you’ll remember easily (this has to be a minimum of 8 characters)

• Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click ‘Submit’

Top tip! Write your network name and password below, in case you need to connect other computers later on. Then keep this booklet somewhere safe.

Now you can browse the internet with your router wired to your Mac. The final bit is to go wireless.

How to understand what your router lights are telling youWhether you use a PC or Mac, your router lights work in the same way. If you’re having trouble connecting to the internet, these little lights might help. They can tell you what’s up.

Leave the yellow Ethernet cable plugged in while you complete this stage.

Click this wireless ‘Airport’ icon (find it on the menu bar, top right of your screen). Select the network name you created to select your router (hopefully you’ve written it down on page 12).

On the ‘Wireless Security’ option make sure ‘WPA-PSK key’ is selected. Then enter your WPA-PSK key (remember you should’ve written it down on page 12).

Click ‘OK’ and your Mac will connect to your secure wireless network – the bars on the ‘Airport’ icon will turn from grey to black.

Now remove the yellow Ethernet cable completely and you should be ready to browse the internet wirelessly.

If you’re having problems with your connection, the tips on pages 19-21 should sort out any issues.

It’s easy to add more Apple Macs to your wireless network:

Click the wireless ‘Airport’ icon (located on the menu bar at the top right of the new computer’s screen).

Choose your network name and enter the WPA-PSK key (Note: the names you wrote down on page 12).

The bars on the ‘Airport’ icon should change from grey to black on your additional computer when it’s connected wirelessly.

If you want to add a PC just turn back to page 7.

Here’s what to look out for if you’re wireless

WLAN • The light isn’t flashing green.

This tells you your wireless connection is turned off. If you’re a PC user, Assist & Go will fix it.

LAN1 to LAN4 • The light is off. It’s normal to be off. So this tells you it’s okay.

• The light is on. You must still have the yellow Ethernet cable connected to your Mac or PC and

router so you’re not actually wireless yet. If you’re a PC user then use your TalkTalk Connect & Go CD to go wireless. If you are a Mac user turn to page 14 and set yourself free!

WLAN • The light is off or flashing green when you’re setting up with the TalkTalk

Connect & Go CD. The light doesn’t matter at this stage. So just ignore it!

LAN1 to LAN4• None of the lights are solid green (the light of the LAN port that your Ethernet

cable is plugged into should be green). Make sure the Ethernet cable is properly plugged into the back of the router. Or try moving it to a different LAN port at the back of the router. Don’t forget the light will only illuminate if both your Mac or PC and router are switched on.

Here’s what to look out for if you’re wired up(this means you’re still using the yellow Ethernet cable)

(which means you’re not using the yellow Ethernet cable)

(whether your connection is wired or wireless)

to stressNo need

More often than not, small hiccups can be easily sorted out. So don’t worry, just follow these simple solutions. If you do get a bit stuck please just get in touch on 0870 087 8045 and we’ll talk you through it.

Power light • It should be solid green when switched on. If it’s not solid green make sure the power adaptor is properly plugged in and

switched on at the wall.

If that’s all fine, try a different power socket. Finally, check the power button at the side of your router is pushed in.

ADSL light • You can only connect if your ADSL light is solid green.

If it’s off or flashing and your ‘go live’ date has passed you need to restart your computer and router.

Now check for a dial tone on your phone (refer back to page 9).

And check all equipment connected to a phone socket has a microfilter.

Finally, check the grey ADSL cable is connected to the ADSL socket at the back of your router.

Internet light • This should be flashing green or solid green when you’re connected to

the internet. If it’s not flashing green then turn the router off for a minute, then switch it on again.

Here’s what the other lights can tell you

Here’s some solutions to common problemsThere’s no internet connection• Check your home phone for a dial tone, if there’s not one call us on

0870 087 8777

• Shut down your computer and turn off your router. After a minute switch them on again

• Check your microfilters: make sure all the phone sockets in use at your home have a microfilter in them. It’s best if the microfilter connected to your router is plugged into the master telephone socket, usually by the front door

• Use Assist & Go if you have a PC, by clicking the icon on your desktop

• Make sure devices such as a Sky TV box, cordless phone or baby monitor aren’t getting in the way

• Try connecting your computer directly to the router using the yellow Ethernet cable provided

• Finally, remove your yellow Ethernet cable to check if your wireless connection now works. If it doesn’t, call us on 0870 087 8045

The connection is really slow• Test your internet connection is on by reconnecting the yellow Ethernet cable. Now

check your microfilters and make sure your router is connected to your home’s master telephone socket. It usually makes things faster. And move any other wireless devices away, as they can affect your wireless connection

• Avoid using ADSL extension cables between your microfilter and router. The grey ADSL cable we gave you will give you the best possible speed

• If you have an antivirus programme, run a scan to check you haven’t been hit by a virus or spyware. If you don’t have security software, or it’s not up to date, we can help with TalkTalk Online Security, just go to www.talktalk.co.uk/peaceofmind

Can’t browse the internet? • Reconnect the yellow Ethernet cable to test your internet connection is on. If there’s

still a problem just call us on 0870 087 8045

• Check the lights on your wireless router for an internet connection (see router lights check on pages 15-18 for extra help)

• Make sure you’ve spelt the website’s name right, or try another website

• Check you’ve not selected ‘Work offline’ in the ‘File’ menu in Internet Explorer. And try another website to see it’s not a problem with the site you’re trying to visit

• If you still can’t surf, restart your computer and router. Then turn them back on a minute later

Your TalkTalk email won’t set up properly• Don’t worry. Go to www.mytalktalk.co.uk, select ‘Help and Support’ tab

then ‘Helpdesk’ for simple instructions

• Set up, change and delete your email accounts by going to https://supportcentre.talktalk.net. Just enter your broadband username and password. NOTE: Don’t change your password here as this is what’s programmed into your router and may cause a few problems if you do

• Go to www.webmail.talktalk.net to check and send emails. Just log in to your account using your email address and password
