Singles embrace the Internet Singles bars & matchmaking relatives haven’t
gone away, but the Internet is a big player in
the dating scene. A survey of 5,000+ singles by
Match.com found that 21% of singles most
recently dated someone they met online more
than anywhere else, making online the most
popular source of dates; in all age groups, seven times more
people met their last date on the Internet than elsewhere.
• Men really are romantic. By age 30, some 58% of men who
have been in love say they believe in love at first sight & have
experienced it, compared with 51% of women. They’re also
more willing to indulge in public displays of affection, 41% to
31%.
• Politics doesn’t always make strange bedfellows. Liberal
Democrats searching for love tend to look for a partner with a
sense of humor, a similar lifestyle to their own, a sense of inde-
pendence, & someone they consider to be their equal. Con-
servative Republicans most often say they they’re looking for
someone with the same back-ground & political party with an
interest in marriage.
• The economy doesn’t squelch love. Despite the stress, 60%of
singles say they haven’t changed their dating habits in response
to the less-than-stellar economy. Over 40% would date some-
one who was unemployed if they were interested in the person.

Enhance your image with these wardrobe hints…
Whether you’re looking for a new job, making a presen-
tation, meeting people at a networking event, or simply
trying to make a positive impression on a new acquaint-
ance, appearances matter. You don’t need to invest in a
wardrobe from Vogue or GQ; just follow these guide-
lines for looking your best.
• When in doubt, dress up. If you’re unsure about an
organization’s dress code or culture, wear your good
clothes. You’re generally safer looking a little too formal
(you can always take off a jacket or necktie) then being
perceived as sloppy in a T-shirt & jeans.
• Shoes never lie. Don’t neglect your shoes when selecting an outfit. If
they’re old, scuffed, or don’t match the rest of the image you’re trying to
project, people will notice. Subtle but significant.
• Pick the right color. Experts say that the color red is useful when you
want to impress or persuade some-one; blue or gray suggests discipline.
A blue or gray suit with a red necktie or other accessory can go a long
way toward making a positive first impression.
The language
of flowers Here’s what you can express to a friend or
loved one by choosing just the right flower
• Carnation: constancy, joy • Chrysanthemum: optimism,
hope, happiness • Daisy: purity, loyalty, innocence • Gladiola: remembrance • Iris: faith, wisdom, promise • Lily: devotion • Orchid: love, beauty • Red rose: true love, desire • White rose: true love, purity • Yellow rose: friendship • Pink rose: sweetness
• Tulip: love at first sight

Odds & Ends - It appears carbon emissions are making for larger crustaceans, such as crabs, lobster & shrimp, which does not necessarily make them meatier. - Apparently the Sun has been rela-tively “quiet” for the last few years; but is about to unleash … creating those northern & southern lights - While most octopus can change color & shape, the ‘mimic’ O can contort their bodies to impersonate other animals: sea snakes, lionfish.

De-Extinction
Revive the Dead
So I’ll make this
short. Scientist are
getting closer to bringing back ex-
tinguished species, & in fact did so
with a Pyrenean ibex (who did not
live for too long). Now a few of the
rules for this process are (for today
anyway): the species can’t have
been gone for too long (but they
do not consider the woolly mam-
moth to be out of range); & they
need intact DNA (which they don’t
have for the dinosaurs ... sorry, no
Jurassic Park … yet !!)
Back in the 60s a guy named Moore created
“Moore’s Law”. The gist was technology would double in speed & halve in size every
18 months. (stop me if you have heard this
before.) So in the late 70s (before PCs) I was
involved in a project that needed to store a
bunch of names & addresses. So we pur-chased some 300 MegaByte CDC (Control
Data) disk drives. They were the size of a dishwasher, cost $90,000, required air con-
ditioned / filtered space, raised floors, had to be backed-up regularly, & occasionally
crashed losing all the data. Today, of
course, you can buy a 16 GigaByte flash drive for ~$20. Now that’s ~50,000 times
the storage space at, far less size & money (my head hurts). The point of this is there
are a couple of geneticists who are applying
this same kind of thinking to the growth rate of complexity on Earth.

Road Movies Literally
Mercedes has a new concept SUV with headlamps fitted with laser-beam projectors; they obvi-ously illuminate the road but also can
project movies, pics, & other visual me-dia onto nearby walls (or perhaps on the street at a distorted angle). These projectors are fed thru the in-dash disc system. If that were not enough, on the roof rails above are HD cameras you can use to document your trip to get bagels; & they are detachable so you
can re-position them on your mountain bike, helmet, or forehead.
You can be sure that one day someone
will figure out a worthwhile application.

Stay Outside Vehicle while Fueling
I got the inside scoop of some rules for
safe refueling. A renowned oil company
does not allow cell phone use in operating
areas that handle propane, gas, & diesel.
When cell phones activate (opened, in-
coming ring) the Static Electricity dis-
charged has caused explosive fires. They
cited 150 incidents. The Petroleum Equip-
ment Institute is campaigning to make
folks more aware of these dangers. I, for
one, vow not to carry my phone in my
pants’ pocket anymore.

Tomb Guards
At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National
Cemetery (VA), guards are changed every hour. The guard must be between 5’10” &
6’2”, waist <30”, live in quarters under the
tomb, abstain from alcohol fot life, & commit for 2 years of tomb service. While in this
service they give detailed attention to their uniform & weapons, study notable people
laid to rest in the cemetery & prepare for the
changing of the guard. After 2 years, they are awarded a wreath pin; presently 400 are
worn. When hurricane Isabelle was ap-proaching in 2003 the guards were given
permission to suspend their assignment. They declined. The tomb has been patrolled
continuously (24/7) since 1930.
